Onore alla Croazia che ha giocato alla morte, è andata sopra 2-0, s'è vista raggiungere ma ha cercato la vittoria arrivata col nuovo entrato Petric. L'Inghilterra vista stasera in un Wembley pessimo (ancora sotto le righe della partita di football americano giocata da poco) non era degna di qualificarsi. Di star ce ne sono 3 o 4, se McClaren regala ai croati un Beckham in panca per un tempo, c'è la solita sciagura in porta (dopo James e Robinson, ecco il turno di Carson), e una serie di giocatori medi che naufraga di fronte a una squadra che sa giocare la palla e non si fa intimorire dalle classiche folate di gioco del calcio britannico. Al fischio finale, è già iniziato il processo a McClaren, come prevedibile.

Passa incredibilmente la Russia, che mai avrebbe pensato di esserci, ma sembra proprio che Guus Hiddink abbia la sorte dalla sua: dopo gli obiettivi centrati con Corea e Australia, ancora una volta il tecnico olandese ce l'ha fatta, nonostante un'altra prestazione negatico, solo 1-0 ad Andorra, dopo l'1-2 in Israele. Il resto come previsto: passano la Turchia (1-0 sulla Bosnia-Erzegovina), il Portogallo dopo un faticoso pareggio in casa con la Finlandia, 0-0, e la Svezia che ha battuto 2-1 la Lettonia, quando le sarebbe bastato il pareggio. L'Italia, per la cronaca, ha battuto 3-1 le Far Oer a Modena. Ora aspettiamo il sorteggio, può capitarci davvero di tutto, Turchia-Romania-Grecia oppure Olanda-Spagna-Francia.

Prima fascia: Austria e Svizzera (Paesi organizzatori), Grecia (detentrice), Olanda coeff. 2.42

Terza fascia: Germania 2.25, Romania 2.25, Portogallo 2.19, Spagna 2.18

Quarta fascia: Polonia 2.17, Francia 2.09, Turchia 1.96, Russia 1.96

A un turno dalla fine delle qualificazioni a Euro 2008, solo 4 squadre mancano all'appello. Con le due nazionali ospitanti, Svizzera e Austria, sono passate Grecia, Italia, Francia, Polonia, Rep. Ceca, Germania, Croazia, Spagna, Romania e Olanda. Mancano quattro squadre all'appello, in base alla classifica e ai pronostici dovrebbero essere Portogallo, Turchia, Svezia e Inghilterra, o al limite Russia.

Passato il turno, gli azzurri cominciano a pensare al prossimo passo, ovviamente dopo la gara con le Far Oer, e cioè il sorteggio di Losanna del 2 dicembre. La notizia è che, se l'Italia batte le Far Oer, come si spera, o pareggia, saremo in seconda fascia, essendo la prima per tre quarti "appaltata" dalle due organizzatrici e dai campioni in carica della Grecia. I coefficienti per stabilire le fasce sono determinati dalla somma dei punti ottenuti nelle qualificazioni a Germania 2006 ed Euro 2008 divisa per le partite giocate. Al momento, favorita per l'ultimo posto in fascia 1 è l'Olanda, forte dei 32 punti ottenuti alle qualificazioni della Coppa del mondo 2006: gli olandesi finirebbero in seconda fascia solo non battendo la Bielorussia, in alternativa la prima fascia andrebbe alla Germania. Può capitare che si preferisca finire in seconda, vista la media delle squadre al top.

Poi ci siamo noi, che per non finire in seconda fascia dovremmo non perdere in casa con la Far Oer. Gli altri due posti se li giocano in cinque: Croazia e Repubblica Ceca, insieme alle possibili qualificate Inghilterra (certa della seconda fascia se vince in Croazia, in terza se pareggia), Portogallo e Svezia, con queste ultime due più probabili in terza fascia. Premesso che tre di queste cinque squadre finiranno in terza fascia, l'ultimo posto è in gioco tra Francia e Spagna, coi francesi favoriti per la differenza reti, visto che se entrambe vincono mercoledì hanno gli stessi coefficienti. A meno di una clamorosa qualificazione della Russia a spese degli inglesi, una delle due finirà in quarta fascia con Polonia, Romania e chi passa tra Turchia e Norvegia.

Insomma, questa seconda fascia vuol dire poco, se pensiamo che, così stando le cose, rimanendo nella stessa fascia potremmo passare da un girone con Grecia, Svezia e Turchia a un girone con Olanda, Francia e Spagna. Non resta altro che attendere mercoledì per avere certezza delle fasce, e poi il 2 dicembre. Rimane il fatto che la cosa più importante, la qualificazione, è stata ottenuta. Poi, dovremo dimostrare in Austria e Svizzera che siamo i campioni del mondo in carica, indipendentemente dal girone.

Viste ieri in TV, Scozia e Italia, mi hanno dato diverse sensazioni. Dei leoni gli scozzesi, sostenuti da un Hampden Park strapieno e urlante, con l'Ucraina che sul 2-1 ha rischiato di pareggiare ma che è stata ancora punita ancora da McFadden, il giustiziere della Francia. Ha voglia Blokhin a dire che la sua squadra si impegnerà fino alla fine, ieri mi sono sembrati andare a una velocità inferiore agli scozzesi, che arrivavano sempre prima sulla palla, il gol di Sheva casuale, dopo le topiche in Champions League ancora una volta Shovkovskiy scandaloso.

Insomma, anche se si sapeva che l'Italia avrebbe vinto, si era quasi certi che non convincesse, e così è stato. Diciamocelo: l'Italia al momento è Buffon (ieri disoccupato), Pirlo, Toni e poco più. La continua e persistente rinuncia di Donadoni ai giovani, il ricorso a vecchi leoni come Ambrosini e a giocatori in presunta crisi come Grosso ha fatto sì che l'Italia giochicchiasse senza pungere più di tanto. Toni colpisce un palo incredibile (nel senso che è incredibile come abbia fatto a non segnare) ed è solo grazie a un erroraccio di tale Georgi Lomaia, portiere senza club, che l'Italia passa con Pirlo.

Nella ripresa le cose vanno un po' meglio, ma l'1-0 è sempre a rischio beffa specie dopo l'ingresso del bambino Kenia, un potenziale campione. Poi arriva il raddoppio dell'eroe di Germania Fabio Grosso, perfetto l'assist di Toni che come al solito riesce a togliere un paio di uomini alla difesa avversaria. Mancano tre giornate, e le tre squadre che lottano per i due posti in Austria e Svizzera devono giocare ancora due partite. Come da titolo, al momento la Scozia è in testa al girone e merita di passare. O meglio, per come si sono messe le cose è giusto che l'Italia debba espugnare Hampden Park per qualificarsi.

Toppmoeller e la sua Georgia promettono battaglia mercoledì, ma è davvero difficile pensare che possano dare una mano alla nostra nazionale. Non che la Scozia abbia avuto un grande rendimento fuori casa, ma insomma gli uomini di McLeish  sono in forma e non dovrebbero avere problemi. Scozia-Italia sarà un altro discorso: all'andata l'Italia vinse e col suo gioco può mettere in difficoltà gli Highlanders. Ma certo, come sarebbero diverse le cose se a Napoli non avessimo pareggiato con la Lituania: quella partita ce la stiamo portando dietro fino alla fine, speriamo di dimenticarcene la sera del 17 novembre!

E così, sabato sono andato bello bello al bar sotto casa a prendermi un biglietto per la finale di Coppa Italia di mercoledì, Distinti Sud, vado con amici romanisti e non mi andava di stare ingabbiato nel settore ospiti. Tanto, si va per vedere la partita in compagnia, e passare una serata tra amici, ho pensato. Sì, ma serata o pomeriggio?

Stamattina mi sono svegliato fiducioso, ho pensato che forse a due giorni dal match sarei riuscito nell'impresa di conoscere l'orario di inizio, e invece il sito dell'AS Roma riporta ancora quell'eufemistico "orario non confermato", quando invece l'orario non è ancora stato stabilito, cosa c'è da confermare? La colpa non è certo della società, ma è il solito, stupido ping pong tra Lega e Viminale, il quale per motivi di ordine pubblico sfugge la notturna come se fosse la peste. Non evitando, quando ha disposto l'incontro in diurna come nel derby di Roma, gli incidenti.

Quella volta si è giocato alle 15, e come ha detto qualcuno ieri in TV (mi pare Gene Gnocchi), forse il Ministero degli Interni vuole che si giochi di giorno così le lame di coltello luccicano... Resta il fatto che invece di usare la tolleranza zero verso gli ultras scalmanati, si usa il "rispetto zero" verso tutti i tifosi. Quelli che hanno preso il biglietto convinti che fosse di sera e non ci andranno, quelli che non ci andranno semplicemente e ancora non hanno preso il biglietto, quelli che vorrebbero attendere fino all'ultimo ma poi non andranno perché i botteghini sono chiusi per disposizioni di legge il giorno della partita.

Tutto ciò mentre la Lega Calcio, sprezzante del senso del ridicolo, chiede all'UEFA di destinare un posto in Champions Legue alla vincente di questa competizione bistrattata da tutti, proposta che effettivamente potrebbe rilanciare la competizione. Ma se all'UEFA, ricevendo la richiesta, si brigassero di accendere la TV per vedere la finale, in un mercoledì pomeriggio con gli spalti vuoti, quale volete che sia la risposta? Questi italiani vorranno mica un posto in Champions anche per la vincente del Trofeso Berlusconi o del Trofeo Birra Moretti?

Il Milan stravince meritatamente 3-0 la semifinale di ritorno col Manchester United e prepara le valigie per Atene. Gli inglesi non sono mai esistiti, Ronaldo ha giocato la peggior partita dell'anno, Giggs fermo sulla sinistra e Rooney troppo solo davanti. Gli inglesi non ci sono stati propio, se all'andata il confronto tra Kakà e Cristiano è stato vinto dal brasiliano ai punti, stasera l'incontro è finito per K.O. al primo round.

Ferguson, peraltro, ci ha capito poco, i suoi giocatori sul campo bagnato nel primo tempo non stavano in piedi. E non ha provato nemmeno, sir Alex, a cambiare di posizione i suoi esterni. 2-0 all'intervallo, mi sarei atteso un calo del Milan nella ripresa ma solo tra il 60' e il 70' i Red Devils sono stati un po' pericolosi. Ma l'ingresso del fresco Gilardino, autore del terzo gol con un contropiede uno contro zero, ha rimesso le cose a posto e nel finale anche il bistrattato Dida si è esaltato nelle uscite alte sugli sterili cross dei britannici.

E così, il Milan va ad Atene dove troverà il Liverpool. La finale è tra due squadre terze nei rispettivi campionati, segno che è sempre più difficile fare il double (il Barca dello scorso anno fu un'eccezione). Alla faccia di chi diceva che la Serie A vale poco. Si ritrovano le due squadre di un paio d'anni fa: allora ad Istanbul, stavolta ad Atene, il Mediterraneo Orientale porta loro fortuna. Un grande successo comunque per il calcio italiano, e milanese in particolare: Inter scudettata, Milan in finale della Champions League. Certa gente che ha solo gettato fango sull'immagine del calcio italiano non ci manca per niente! Al 23 maggio...

Last weekend, almost at the same time, two presidents confessed their mistakes, by reinstating a coach they sent away before. "I made a mistake" says Torino President, Urbano Cairo, "maybe Zaccheroni could have done better with a squad built by him". The history of the Granata is really unbelievable: Gianni De Biasi, the coach that lead the team to promotion, was sent away before the beginning of the season. Cairo hired Zaccheroni, maybe he thought the Cesenatico coach was more experienced, as he coached Milan, Lazio and Inter.

Five consecutive defeats and a bad position in Serie A table (just a little bit above the relegation zone) put Zac's position in danger. Last Saturday Torino played away at ChievoVerona, and it was clear this was the last ditch for him. Just before the game the Rosina-gate made a noise: Torino striker in his personal website gave bad rankings to the whole team -except himself- and in Verona was sent to the stand. Torino lost 0-3 and the defeat was lethal to Zaccheroni. So, Cairo went back to the past, again with De Biasi.

In Cagliari, it happened almost the same. President Cellino called up Marco Giampaolo last summer after young coach did very well at Ascoli, but as usual it's not easy to work with that kind of Presdient. Cellino is a little bossy, and in Italy we say that executives like him are "Mangia-allenatori" (Coach-eaters), meaning they change coaches just like they change their shirt. That's why Cellino in December sent Giampaolo away, while Cagliari was playing badly but was just in a safe position.

Cagliari had a new coach, the experienced Franco Colomba. But the former Reggina trainer did not satisfy his chairman, who lives in Miami and manages the club from overseas. Last Sunday, after Cagliari's defeat against Lazio, Cellino decided to call Giampaolo again. In the meantime, Giampaolo had left Cagliari, his house and changed the school to his sons in another part of Italy. Unfortunately for him, the coach has still a contract in place; so, if he didn't accept to come back, he'd loose his salary from now until contract expiry.

Tomorrow the tricks of fate -and Serie A schedules, of course- will play off De Biasi against Giampaolo, for day 26. At least one of them won't loose, and a president will be, finally, happier than before.

Inter's 17th consecutive win isn't news, just like the umpteenth Totti's mistake from the penalty spot. Today we want to talk about three teams that have been punished after Calciopoli scandal, and now are trying to get into Europe by its main door: Champions League. Now it's Lazio seating on the fourth step, but Milan is just one point behind and Fiorentina is some distance from them but maybe is in very good shape and don't mind if they are six points under. Reasonably, they are fighting for just one place, but we see that Palermo is in a bad moment and there are still 14 games to play. Will the Sicilians resist in the Top Four? We'll see...

Another remark we should do is that all the people saying this year Serie A is not so good, are a little bit wrong. Take for example the table as it would be if all those teams weren't penalized. At least for the top 6, it should be: Inter 66, AS Roma 52, Fiorentina 46, Palermo 44, AC Milan 44, Lazio 40. Top teams are all there, except Juve that is still paying for its scandals, so it's not Inter's fault if they are too strong. We should talk anout no history for its strenght, but not that the level is lower than the past for the reason Juve is not there.

Anyway, yesterday night AC Milan won without deserving, for the second time three points came during the extra-time, once again Ambrosini's header has been decisive: without him now Milan would be sixth with 31 points, 35 less then Inter. Ronaldo played badly, but had to carry the weight of the attack as Oliveira has been replaced by Cafu after 10', due to Oddo's sending-off. Mach 11th is going to be the moment of truth for Ancelotti: that day his team will play against Inter for the derby. Anyway, choosing Ronaldo -that cannot play Champions League- Milan has shown how important is fourth place to them.

Lazio forward Tommaso Rocchi is the man of the day. His beautiful goal in Cagliari has been applauded by all the viewers, and he had a standing ovation by the opposite fans, and this doesn't happen every day, especially in Italy, where fair play is just a pipe-dream. Now Lazio on Wednesday is going to play Catania at the Stadio Olimpico, it won't be easy, though Catania is in deep crisis and needs some point after the unsuccessful match against Inter.

We think Fiorentina is Serie A third best team, after Inter and Roma (according to Mutu, they are second, after Inter). They have a good coach, a fantastic pair of forwards, Luca Toni and Adrian Mutu, a technical skilled player as Liverani and some good youngsters (Montolivo, Pazzini and Donadel). Sporting director Pantaleo Corvino confirms their interest to young players: today Fiorentina has signed Arturo Lupoli (Arsenal forward, now at Derby County on loan) for the next five years. So, Neapolitan forward will be back to Italy since July, as he left Parma some years ago, "stolen" by Arsenal.

So, as from now until the end of may, at least we'll see an exciting fight for Europe: giants are back!

The triumphal march in serie A (20 wins, 3 draws and no defeats) deceived Inter fans, but in Europe things are different this year. The groups stage started in a bad way, with 2 incredible defeats in Lisbon and home vs Bayern Munich, then three consecutive wins against two irresistible teams as Sporting and Spartak Moscow. And now, retour match in Mestalla will be very difficult. Inter needs to win or draw at 3 to get through the quarter finals. Inter is Valencia's bete noir, and we hope in a good result.

It has been difficult and to play in front of 22000 people in a stadium that can contain 85000, but an absurd regulation gave access to "Meazza" in San Siro only to people with season tickets that are, for yuor information, 35000. Ok, we have to increase security, but we don't think the right way to do this is to keep people outside. Anyway, after kick off Inter starts slowly and ball possession is for Valencia. Coach Mancini cannot field his usual starting 11, as Patrick Vieira suffers with some muscolar problems, so Figo is just behind the strikers and midfield is made by Stankovic, Zanetti and Cambiasso. It's just the Argentinean Cuchu to score for the 1-0: free kick of Figo from the right, Ibra hit the ball with his shoe's sole, Canizares saves but Cambiasso's header goes into the Spanish goal. Probably it was an offside.

Second half: Inter's rythm is lower than before, and Valencia is better, though they played last Sunday in front ofa tough team as Barcelona is. Minute 64: a foul by Dacourt, and David Villa's free kick from 30 metres passes by Inter's wall. It's a fantastic goal, but Julio Cesar could be positioned better, and the wall itself was not so well positioned. Anyway, it's 1-1. Inter takes it badly, but after some time Cruz enters for Crespo, and serves a delightful assist to Maicon, that beats Canizares. Inter is leading again, but it lasts no more than 10' minutes a corer from the right by Villa, and the other David, Silva, finds his life's shot. It's the end: Inter 2, Valencia 2.

It will be hard for Inter at Mestalla on March 6th. Valencia stadium will be -differently from Milan San Siro- a hell-pit, but Inter has to demonstrate that his strenght is not relegated to the Italian border. And Roberto Mancini has to avoid tonight's mistakes, especially in second half. Ok, Vieira was injured and Cambiasso had to go out, but we think he should have send into the pitch Santiago Solari, in Figo's stead or maybe Stankovic. Well, he should have changed his pattern into a classic 4-4-2, but he definitely needed more power in Inter's midfield.

Cambiasso 6.5: a goal, then he has to go out for a muscular problem
Crespo 5: just a header close to goal, he touches few balls
Ibra 5.5: not his best night, but as usual he shows some touches of class
Dacourt 6: not a midfield barrier we know

Flachi and his way to exult after scoring

It has already happened in the past, and now it's again: Francesco Flachi, Sampdoria forward, has been tested positive for benzoilecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, after Sampdoria-Inter of 28yh of Jannuary, when the Genoans lost 0-2. Today is cocaine, like in 1996: at that time he had been even blamed for international drugs traffic by public prosecutor in Rome, in particular between Rome and Colombia. For Flachi there's been no peace this year, as he has already expiated a 2 months ban for illegal betting, together with his former teammate, Morris Carrozzieri (we talked about this ban here)
