Attack Is The Best Form Of Defence !

Sunday, 26 October 08, 05:44 AM · Comments(0)

Good morning on this fine bank holiday Sunday. No work tomorrow for me which is something I have in common with the Spuds management team as they've all been sacked. Much to my surprise Harry Redknapp has taken the job as he says it is his chance to manage a big club. Obviously the man's mind is going. Firstly, The Spuds are nowhere near a big club and secondly he hasn't a hope of keeping them up. Maybe he plans to do to them what he did to Southampton. The last time he left Pompey it was to briefly manage Southampton, get them relegated and return to Pompey. Appearently he is a bit of an Arsenal fan and if he can do us that favour it would be nice. Then again if the Spuds go down we will have to play a better team to get those guarenteed 6 points a season that we are used to. The rumour is that Tony Adams will take over at Pompey with Joe Jordan. A lot of fans want Tony back at Arsenal as a defensive coach but Pompey's defence has been a shambles at times this season. I still think that Martin Keown did a great job with our defence on the run to the Champions League final and if we need a defensive coach then he's the man for the job. With Denis Bergkamp wanting to coach at the club that would be a good combination in my opinion, for what it's worth. Mind you attacking wise our coaching seems pretty good at the moment. Does anyone else think the whole Redknapp deal was done incredibly fast if there was no tapping up ?

In other news Everton did us a favour by drawing with United and if Liverpool can win against Chelsea today that will put a stop to their claims that they can be invincible too. In the long term, of this season anyway, I think a Liverpool win is best for us as Chelsea are a bigger threat. Having said that I don't think we can win the league but you never know and if we can somehow sort out our defence and overcome our leadership issues and our lack of commitment at times we certainly can play well enough to beat anybody and win anything. Having said that I want the manager to play our strongest team today and attack from the start. We will need to score 2 or 3 because our defending is below the required level at the moment. With Gallas and Toure both back he will probably play both of them but I would like to see Djourou get his chance. When Steve Staunton was manager of Ireland he purposely played players out of position because he was "The Gaffer" and it had a disasterous effect. I am not suggesting that our manager is doing it, like Staunton, to prove that he knows better than the press and the fans but I am a little worried by the inclusion of Song in the team in various positions when he clearly isn't up to standard in any of them. We have better options in every position than Song and hopefully we will see Diaby from the start again. Sagna will probably miss out, so Eboue has to right full and RVP will probably return. Mind you 5 in the middle with Diaby playing off Adebayor worked very well on Tuesday but I don't think RVP would be happy to be left out again. Does the manager have the bottle to do it ? I predict 3-1 to Arsenal as long as we approach the game in the right way and this should just about keep us in touch with Hull.

We have been linked with Yaya Toure again and also with Kyle Naughton of Sheffield United. Our youths continued their good form and beat Southampton 2-1. Silvestre thinks the youngsters can be better than the famous United crop including Beckham & Co. Adebayor thinks he has won the fans back. I've got news for him. I'm happy to see him playing for us but it turns my stomach when he kisses the badge because he doesn't know what loyalty is. That's about it for today. I'm off to watch the match with the supporters club in the Strand in Bray and then the bank holday Sunday night drinking begins after the Sunday afternoon drinking. God help my liver. Expect a late post tomorrow.

Here's a clip of one of our most famous victories ever.
