Arsenal confirm Gallas bid

Tuesday, 22 August 06, 08:36 PM · Comments (11)

Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal have put in an offer for William Gallas.

Wenger confirmed the bid at a press conference earlier this afternoon, where he also announced that Ashley Cole wouldn't be in Arsenal's Champions League squad to play Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

"We are still in no man's land surrounding his [Cole] move. I made an offer for William Gallas and that is how far we are," Wenger told reporters.

Conflicting reports in this morning's newspapers suggest that Chelsea are either willing to let Gallas spend the final year of his contract in the reserves, or are prepared to swap Gallas in a direct exchange for Cole.

Both seem unlikely.

getting gallas plus money for cole would be a great deal for the arsenal

since cole has been with that geordie bird..it seems he is more interested with his partying than he is with his footy

money has gone too his head!!

i love the guy...he has been a top player for us....but we need a central defender..and someone like gallas would be great..plus with the money we get we could buy another left back and a midfielder

i say bring the deal on and lets get it over with

I'd rather see us buy Ash outright for around £20 million and leave Gallas to rot in the reserves.

He has behaved like a complete idiot over this, although he has been prone to mouthing off and moaning before.

I am so angry. All this stuff about Chelsea tapping up Cole and now Arsenal are doing exactly the same thing with Gallas. It is typical hypocritical bullsh1t from Dein. I hate Arsenal. Come on You Blues.

Tell me Freddie, how exactly have Arsenal tapped up Gallas? Did Dein and Wenger arrange to meet him and his agent in the less than private setting of a London hotel? I don't think so. Perhaps you're unhappy because another club has come in for one of your best players and now he wants to go. Thats fair enough beacuse thats how I feel about Cole and Reyes to a lesser extent. Just don't go trying to take the moral high ground on this one because it just won't wash.

C'mon JTB, you know that Henry and the other French have been pouring sweet words into Gallas's ear - we tried it with Gerrard, so c'est la vie. But don't pretend this kind of 'tapping place' doesn't happen, and it's what makes a mockery of the FA's tantrum about us.

My ideal scenario - we sign another world class left back for £15m, leave Gallas to sulk in the reserves and let Arsenal deal with 'orrible Ashley. Perfect!

The tapping up rule is a complete farce as it stands - officials meeting in a hotel may be more blatant (and pretty stupid), but is the net result really any different from Thierry whispering in his mate's ear for a month while they were in Germany?

If Arsenal had only bid over the weekend then why had Gallas's agent been talking of their interest for over a month then? Where did that come from? He just guessed? Who do you think Mourinho is talking about when he talks of an "invicible club" who have not made a bid for him but are unsettling Gallas? Is there anyone else who now wants him after the sales in Serie A?

I would to add that I never said Chelsea were in the right over Cole, all I said was that it annoys me that Dein and Wenger get on their high horse when it seems that they are now doing exactly the same thing.

Of course Wenger has spoken to Gallas.

I imagine in almost every transfer the prospective buying club's manager speaks to the player he is proposing to buy before they lodge a bid to ensure he is interested.

The tapping up rule is a load of nonsense, David Dein knows it and that is why he is a sanctimonious pr1ck. Didn't Arsenal get busted for having a cheeky word with Baptista last summer? I am sure Baptista went on record saying he had met Wenger in Brazil.

Not sure why Jose didn't give Ash a call rather than meet him in a hotel though...

The thing is it has been PROVEN that you tapped up Cashely C***. It may also be proven that you tapped up the Leeds youngsters. We have never been caught as such, tapping up players. Yes, tapping up occurs, but attacking David Dein is pointless and the anger misplaced. He was voted in by all members of the Premier League, now David Gill has that position. As for thinking that it was Dein's fault for Chelsea being disgraced, well, if we were caught in a hotel with Terry wouldnt Bruce Buck come out in his ridiculous American way and say that Arsenal should be punished? The fact is you were found guilty by an independant panel.

Gallas wants to leave, and it definately isnt for money, it doesnt seem to do with success either, and probably to do with his personal happiness. Lets face it Wenger looks after players better than Mourinho- he takes care of them better. I'm not saying Wenger's way is better; sometimes I wish he would bollock players like Mourinho does. Last season when Robben was in indifferent form, Mourinho said he had given 'very little'. When Reyes was finding it tough, Wenger never said anything, just encouraged him and said he believed in his potential etc. Yes he has behaved in a childish manner, but it seems nowadays all players when agitating for a move do the same - Hargreaves, Ooijer, Ibrahimovic just a few examples from this summer.

I would be ecstatic with around 15 million plus Gallas, and thats what we should be driving for.

Actually, it is the money with Gallas. He's on around 70K a week, poor love, and is surrounded by others on 120K a week. He wants parity and if Chelsea offered it, he'd sign.

I doubt that he'll move across London for 10K a week less than he's on now.

Steve, I'd contest that Wenger looks after players better than Mourinho. The only player we've flogged who has had anything bad to say about JM is Kezman, who was shit. Crespo, Duff and Eidur were all full of praise. I also imagine that AW and JM present very different public and private faces in their dealing with players – if AW wasn't capable of giving out a rollocking or two, he wouldn't be the success that he is. Ditto, JM, who probably puts his arm round Robben in private as much as he bawls him out in public.

Gallas has agitated for a move three or four times at Chelsea under different managers. He needs money and needs to feel loved. He's high maintainence, but worth it.
