Babayaro to sign for Newcastle

Thursday, 30 December 04, 12:51 PM · Comments (4)

Chelsea's 26-year-old left-back Celestine Babayaro is set to officially sign for Graham Souness' Newcastle on January 1 The player, who would have been out of contract at the end of the season, moves for an undisclosed fee.

Babayaro won the FA Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield and European Super Cup during his seven-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, but has been out-of-favour since Roman Abramovich's takeover allowed Chelsea to buy Wayne Bridge. This season saw him as Chelsea's third-choice left-back behind Wayne Bridge and the right-footed William Gallas.

Babayaro is Chelsea's longest serving professional having joined in 1997 from Anderlecht for what was then our record fee for a teenager, £2.25m.

Farewell Baba -- and good luck.

Now that babayaro has left,it is definate that chelsea will get a new left full-back,so i see like two or three new players coming to chelsea this january.I wish Baba good luck at newcastle. And i hope Jose mourinho choses very well and not bring scrappy players as in the likes of Drogba to chelsea anymore cos i sure mourinho did’nt really watch a lot of Drogba’s playing video clips b4 he bought him,i guess he was following what the press were writting about drogba.I hope he choses well this time.

abi:

You don’t seriously think Mourinho picks players for his teams from what he hears in the press, do you?

Absolutely.. Even without consideration for his vast cost, Drogba has been disappointing. Poor touch on the ball and poor finishing. I just hope he has more in reserve than we have seen so far. Note that JM’s signings from outside of Portugal have been poor – Drogba and Kezman. Maybe he does not do as much research on everything as we are led to believe. Baba has been great for Chelsea, and I hope things go well for him at the BarCodes. Good luck Baba!
