Daily Telegraph, John Ley: "Chelsea achieved another milestone last night when they extended their unbeaten Stamford Bridge record in all competitions to 50. Already assured of their place in next week's Champions League knockout draw, and against a sadly inept Valencia showing nothing of their past brilliance, this was a canter and the result was predictable."
The Guardian, David Hytner: "If Avram Grant's reign as Chelsea manager took flight against Valencia at the Mestalla in early October, then there were more prosaic qualities on show in the Stamford Bridge return, and certainly less excitement. Consolidation appeared to be the order of the evening."
The Times, Alyson Rudd: "Chelsea achieved the landmark of a half-century of matches without defeat at Stamford Bridge and Avram Grant, their first-team coach, could boast a 16-game unbeaten run after he opted to show Valencia precisely why his team qualified as group winners with a match to spare for the knockout stage of the Champions League. It was lively fare, but perplexing; Valencia barely resembled a side that had something to play for. Chelsea by contrast managed to enjoy themselves without putting their home record in peril."
The Independent, Sam Wallace: "No Didier Drogba, no goals and not even 90 minutes for Andrei Shevchenko, the man who would be the new goal king of Stamford Bridge. Chelsea might have wondered how they failed to win this one but the more pertinent question for Avram Grant is who will score the goals against Arsenal on Sunday."
Official Chelsea FC Website, Andy Jones: "Both sides appeared happy to come off the field, Chelsea unbeaten and without injury, Valencia ready to catch the plane back to Spain as they prematurely crashed out of Europe."
Santiago Canizares. Wayne Bridge. In my eyes our most consistent player over the 90 minutes.
If I'm honest, I'm not looking forward to Sunday's game at the Emirates. Firstly, you have to wonder who, apart from Frank Lampard, will score us the goals we will undoubtedly need (it's unlikely to finish 0-0). I'd like to see Grant try 4-4-2 - Cech; A. Cole, Terry, Alex, Belletti; J. Cole, Lampard, Mikel, Wright-Phillips; Shevchenko, Kalou - and play Arsenal at their own game. If he decides on a 4-5-1/4-3-3 with either Shevchenko or Pizarro in the lone striker's role, we'll be lucky to come away with anything. Here's hoping Grant proves me very wrong, which he's done a lot of in recent times.
SWP out wide ont he right is a bad idea. Tired of going on about him , but he just doesn't know how to put in a decent ball for a forward.
It seems like nobody wants to shoot anymore. If there'es a chance to make a yard of space, we end up passing the ball instead of looking for a shot.
If you call that 'attacking ' football then it's bo*****s
SHEVA and Pizarro just lack any kind of aggression, or conviction when they attack the ball.
Who will score for us on Sunday?
Lampard or Joe Cole I'd say.
Not all bad though, I thought we played some good stuff, especially in the 1st half hour, and Joe Cole was brilliant when he came on.
Pizarro looked as tough he'd never score, but he did provide more than Shevchenko. Held off players well and at least the ball stuck with him more than Sheva.
Well done Nick...trying to erase your strikethrough on Canizares... he deserves the man of the match award...opposition or not..(lafs)
Agree with Ethicalstrategy though....SWP should have featured in the bad section cos after all these years, his crossing is still terribly poor...i'm almost convinced that even his good crosses are purely out of luck and not from any intended precision...He should just focus on that (26hrs a day) in training a day if u ask me.
Always Blue!
I'm still kinda bugged we didn't win this. I mean, finishing with 12 from 6 games is kinda bad but then again, we finished with at least 13 in the past seasons and didn't reach the finals. Here's hoping we do that this year.
I dont know why, but I have a really really good feeling that we're gonna beat Arsenal on Sunday. And c'mon, why should we be scared? We nearly beat them at the Emirates last season without Drogba and down to ten men, if only Kalou had scored that wondrous opportunity. And we do have a really good record against them since that loss at Stamford Bridge 3 years ago. I'm looking forward to it! 2-1 to Chelsea!
Keep the blue flag flying HIGH!!
I think that Pizarro is looking better. Despite what they say I think that he plays the holding position and generates espaces pretty well. Just give the lad some time and you'll see. Grant has been making positive coments about him. I think that what Grant is trying to do is, little by little, making him adapt to English football so when he really needs him (African Nations Cup) he will be at his prime. Im sure that when he will be needed the most he will respond.
Heard the goners plan on fielding Lehman...so, expect an early xmas gift!
Always Blue!
play chech - asley cole, terry, alex, billeti - kalou, obi mikel, lampard, cole - Sheva, Pizzaro and chelsea will win 2-0 (1-0)over arsenal.
Good point Harry and something to cling on to for any Blue whose a bit nervous going into this game. Without Drogba and down to ten men for a LONG period away at the Emirates we held out own and could have snatched it - I'm not forgetting the goal we had ruled out either - this time around we're going into it on the back of some strong performances too.
We didn't really have to put much into the tank last night and still created enough chances to grab the win in the end, a pretty good warm up match in the end if you ask me!
Lets just have our fingers crossed that the big players like Terry and Lamps perform well come Sunday.
Come on Chels!
Besides from the opening EPL match against Birmingham, I see no aggression from Mr. Pizarro. He's truly not coordinating well with the rest of the team. Surely he will do us no good at the Emirates this Sunday.
Sheva's still a headache, as much as Kalou, tell me if they need time, but I believe Grant's not playing them enough. Big games ahead, and we often lack the skilled players we wanted badly.
Heard that Lamps gonna go this Jan to what, Italy???? This is truly the most awful moments of our time. Hope rumors will be settled with the new signing contract thing to be done asap....
I struggle to understand the slating of Pizarro. Of course he won't score in a month of Sundays at the moment, but he's the new Eidur Gudjohnsen. Won't score but makes everything tick in the top third of the pitch. Just don't leave him as the person with the shooting chance and he's great.
Awwww........ isn't it sweet.....
England's precious little club Liverfool have won their game. Now the whole country can smile again as England's only club that has history are through to the knock out stage of the Champions League. Now the entire Sky Sports can breathe again as their favourite club is still in the competition. I bet they are having a party now.
I think Pizza boy needs a bit more time on the pitch before he is critasized. I think he'll score some goals and will hopefully be sharper this weekend. Lets hope he and Shevy start in a 4-4-2 with SWP and J Cole on the wings.
KTBFFH
The 1-1 at the Emirates last season had one crucial element that we'll miss badly on Sunday; Essien. We need a big game from Mikel - he'll be crucial in breaking up their passing game; he needs to keep his head and not pick up his obligatory yellow too early on either.
Glad to see some of us defending Pizarro.
'but he’s the new Eidur Gudjohnsen'
That's what I've been saying all along. He was JM's replacement for Eidur.
The one thing about Mikel and Lmapard as the midfield two is that they lack the enrgy that Essien can provide.
I have a feeling he'll go for Makelele and make it a three.
Just hope Mak has one of his better days, because if we definetely can't afford to have him losing the ball in vital positions in this match.
Thought Ballack was the Eidur replacement.
Agree with the talk on midfield, it'll be Mikel, Lamps and Maka and that could be too slow and Essien will be missed. I also think Arsenal will target Mikel (as they did with Essien a couple of years ago) and try to get him sent off.
Even Grant would find it hard to deliver his usual post-match line (let along four or five times) after having picked that midfield.
I think the midfield four will be Obi, Frank, Joe, Kalou, with two up front (Pizzarro and Sheva) but Pizza playing a bit more withdrawn.
I couldn't get to the Valencia game because I was feeling like [Liver]poo so I had to watch it on telly. Pretty impressive for all but 20 mins of the second half, but they were as bad as Sunderland. If Koeman hasn't got them playing at least with a bit of a will to win. is he going to ship out some of those players in January?
I agree entirely that Bridgey was fantastic. How McClaren got him to play so badly in a must-draw game, I'll never know.
Kalou's Miss-o-meter goes up to 11. But I still think he contributes to the team. Pizzarro looked hopelessly tentative in front of goal but otherwise I thought he was ok. But given their failings, I can't see us scoring more than the Arse will score on Sunday.
Oh, here's my fantasy I've been conforting myself with in my illness. Imogen Stubbs rings the doorbell and ... Hang on, sorry, the other one. Franco comes over to England to work with Capello. Capello lasts two years before media idiots get him sacked because we don't get past QF of World Cup. Zola is by then fully qualified and becomes manager of Chelsea.
Who honestly cares if he'd be any good? RA tried to buy Cagliari to get him to come back to Chelsea, and if I got to buy the mineral resources of the world's largest nation at an absurdly knockdown price, I'd do the same.
This should upset plenty of you - lol

This contract (with Grant) means nothing except of the fact that he will get compensation, when he gets sacked. Managers bigger than him got sacked.
I doubt you've got a sense of humour MikeL - I was sarcastically referring to his physical size.
Not surprising he's finally been given a contract; decent run of results and if he's looking to buy in January it will be easier to convince players to come in if the manager is here on a more 'permanent' basis (fairly irrelevant in the big scheme of football contracts these days, but appearance is everything...)
Can't say he hasn't earned it. He's got a lot to live up to if he's going to stay four years though - not even two trophies a season is good enough remember!
Indeed - if he doesn't win the Boat Race, the Open and the Heineken Cup, questions will be asked...!
You've left out The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing as well JD ;-)
I take back Strictly! the thought of him wearing anything tight fitting and colourful makes me feel quite nauseous.
I've only just got over seeing John Barnes!
I think this just confirms we were right to off load him.... LINK
Hleb, RVP and Fabregas all supposed to be back for Sunday. Typical.
If that's the case I'm not overly confident we'll get anything up there. Stranger things have happened though, I suppose.
Robben? Injured? Say it ain't so...
Clive, It was obvious. Robben is a talanted footballer, but very injury prone, or simply whiner. He should be called whiner winger. I still remember how couple of muppets on this blog tried to say that it was mistake to sell him. Probably the same ones who praises Avram Grant nowdays.
Now, about something completely different - Avram Grant. My sources in Israel made very interesting research for me. Two and a half years ago, when he left Israel and moved to England papers in Israel were writing that he is going to be Chelsea manager. Nobody paid attention to this fact and everybody said he is imagining things. However, it all turned to be the truth. Now, let’s put one plus one. Zahavi moves Grant to UK in order to make him a Chelsea manager. Nevertheless, move did not work out as position of Jose were still strong those days and Grant meanwhile carries cones in Portsmouth. Zahavi creates unrest in Chelsea dressing room and damages Jose’s position within the club. He simply takes power out of him and delegates it to the different people. Apparently he has big influence on Roman and strong position within the board. The only target of all this things is to install Avraam as the manager in Stamford Bridge. It was all planned. Jose’s days were counted since the moment Zahavi decided to move Grant to Chelsea. I truly hope Chelsea survives all these intrigues created by these two!!!!
MikeL,
I thought it was a mistake to sell Robben and i'm definately not an advocot of AG. Credit where it's due he's had a good streak of games, but now comes a real test against Arsenal on Sunday. Win, lose or draw it still won't be conclusive of his ability to manage, i think we'll only kniow this at the end of the season.
What's starting to become more clear is Pini Zahavi's role in all of this. This guy got Roman to The Bridge and now seems to have a big say in matters at the club. Especially if what MikeL mentioned about reports two years ago of AG being manager of Chelsea FC.
I hope these people know what they are doing. I feel like we're dangling on a cliff edge and it'll be a while before we are saved (settled) or dead (free fall).
We love you Chelsea....
K/T/B/F/F/H
CheBeef, at least we agree in our view on Avram Grant :-) The same as you I truly hope these people (Zahavi and Co) know what they are doing. However, I affraid they do not and there will be a moment when Roman have to offload these minders. The only problem for me in all this is that Chelsea might suffer.
If you need to feed off conspiracy theories you'll probably get better mileage from the Princess Diana story.
The simple truth is Roman got fed up with Jose and Roman owns the club so he can do what the hell he likes. He didn't need to waste time constructing a conspiracy and being Machiavellian
Zahavi appears to have less influence now than when Roman first arrived (the flurry of signings under Claudio being case in point). Despite the shabby way it was handled by the club, Jose was increasingly on borrowed time irrespective of Grant's presence - much as his arrival was badly timed, it seemed to be as much about putting a buffer between Roman and Jose who clearly didn't get on.
Always had mixed feelings about Robben - said it before on here, but he has as much potential to end up World Player of the Year as he does to retire at 26 because his body can't cope with the stresses and strains of modern football.
Spot on Jonathan. As a player I thought Robben was a little hit and miss during his time at the Bridge.
One moment he was showing touches of brilliance and settling matches wit a moment of brilliance - I think I remember him coming off the bench against Blackburn a couple of years back and scoring the winner with a moment of magic. The next he will be looking unhappy, unhealthy and unhelpful to the team.
As for his temperament I think he had just as big a negative influence on the dressing room camaraderie as Roman has.
I was sad to see the player leave but not the man.
Mark...thanks...
For a while back up there i thot i was reading a plot from a best seller somewhere....Mikel would make a good novelist i think...sure seems like he has a 'calling' in that area...
Like i said in an earlier post....i still believe the goners should be the ones to worry (our defence has been relatively solid in recent times)...our guys are professionals, and i see them playing with more experience and maturity come sunday...
Pls, AG should let Alex play...we could do with some of his 'missiles'...
Always Blue!
What we really need this Sunday is a player to step up to the plate and take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Lamps has done it in the past - but not often enough if you ask me - and Essien is missing for this match so there's no chance of a repeat of last season.
I really don't see Sheva doing anything special tomorrow and the jury's still out on Claudio and Salomon, I'm praying one of these guys can pull something out the hat and if they do, cult hero status could well be waiting for them in a similar way Bridgey found his after the Champs League victory a few years back.
Come on Chels...
we could hold arsenal and even outplay them, we did it in style last season with our 10men on the field . nuthn much has really changed apart from their confidence(arsenal).lets just play our level best and am sure we will get the results, it is with this kind of matches that sheva should establish himself as a match winner in chelsea! and is Ballack fit? grant should not repeat the same mistakes that happened during joses reign a recurrence of a similar scenario after a draw and subsequent defeat. For kalou lets just hope we can bank on his unpredictability ,mikel temper temper wount help keep a cool head!!!!!
Ballack's not fit.
I just read on The Official Chelsea Pravda Website (Every Day, In Every Way, We Are Playing Better And Better Football!) that in the Ivory Coast they call Kalou "Kalunho". (I assume for the same reasons Norwegians used to call TAF "Flonaldo".) Tee hee.
Fingers crossed.
Let's hope to see Ballack fit, and attacking Sheva+Pizza+Kalou all fit to score..
Leave the whole defense job to the great 5 boys!
Up the Chels!
I believe that the answer for us is Yakubu from Everton. Watch this chap and his scoring record. He also played under Grant in Maccabi Haifa, when they have beaten ManU in the Champs League. The guy is serial goal scorer. I saw him play - and he is as strong as Drogs.
Hmm. Compare Eboue's tackle on Terry to the one Mikel saw red for at O.T.
Not sure what to make of that overall; large part of the spine of the team missing and still we did reasonably well. Arsenal simply not all they're cracked up to be - Mancs are by far the better side overall. Mikel stood out as our best player overall; Joe Cole really needs a kick in the arse - he's playing like the stupid showboating fool of old. Sheva had quite a decent game but still nowhere near good enough. SWP - well, you can only be so patient. Where are the goals going to come from, I wonder...?
That scissor tackle at the end from Fibreglass on Ashley should have been a straight red, if it had have been Mikel we know what the outcome would have been!
I suppose you can legislate for giving away soft goals, a very basic mistake from Petr, and on top of that nobody on the post for the corner either.
As far as SWP goes that miss sums him up, he really isn't good enough to wear our colour blue, please buy him back Sven!
just on train back from the game. Second half we played well. Mikel was great and kalou good too. I also thought sheva was half decent and looked fitter. Lamps was a bit got and cold
Nifty of AG to get his contract extension done after the Sunderlands and West Hams and Valencias and Derbys and Wigans, and before Arse, Liverpoo, and Blackburn away.
But I gather we played ok? (Didn't see the game.) So -- credit to the bloke if due. With no Drogba and Essien it was always going to be unlikely.
I am a blue through and through but how are we going to win the UCL or EPL this season if we cant beat the big teams?
Agree with you Mark, Sheva looked strong enough and could have scored a couple this afternoon but again he didn't, he has no confidence and at this point I think he's relying on that to improve his game. I know we do still get behind the guy - well at least in the Matty Harding - but I think we need to show him we're still behind him otherwise he will not start scoring.
Mikel's getting better and looks more matured - his temperament is still getting the better of him from time to time.
Now with Terry, Drogba and Essien all definitely missing for the Liverpool game, can anybody really see us getting anything out of this match on Wednesday?
Well, Chelsea fans now are happy when they lose, as long as they play well. How the mighty...
"I am a blue through and through but how are we going to win the UCL or EPL this season if we cant beat the big teams?"
I suggest we adopt the liverpool strategy...
Didnt see the game due to time difference, but how did galla$ celebrate his goal?
"Well, Chelsea fans now are happy when they lose, as long as they play well. How the mighty…"
Who said we were happy? Come back and gloat if you win something this season!
hallo is nick ,sleeping or what? i`ve been waiting to comment on the arsenal vs chelsea game so whats happening you guys are taking too long and the steam will run out
Hold your horses, Dickson. Bit busy today. Will try to get something posted this lunchtime.
You can leave your comments on this post and I'll move them to the Arsenal post later.
Try and keep up with the program Nick. We don't want excuses, we want blogs. If we don't get results soon we'll have to replace you with a foreign blogmaster :-)
Why is everybody castrating Sidwell when clearly it was Essien playing shite?
Take all these players that 'do LOADS of work', essien, kuyt,...,etc
and put them together=shit.
get rid of essien.runs 10 miles more than anybody else and yet gets nothing to show for it.

Kalou definitely lacks composure when he gets near goal but his overall play wasn't at all bad. The player that really had a nightmare was SWP. He had all the time in the world and failed to deliver even one decent cross in the whole match. His control of the ball generally was also poor. I'd pick Kalou ahead of him any time.
It's just as well we didn't need to win last night to progress, but it certainly wasn't for the lack of trying on Chelsea's part. We look quite toothless up front, although we created enough chances, this could have very well been a different blog today.
And if SWP wastes anymore chances of delivering a killer cross or pass when he gets into these fantastic positions we should give him away along with millions in cash to any team that will take him!!
I'm not too worried about Sunday, Arsenal have shown in the past few games their not unbeatable or as free scoring. A draw would be fine, but I have a feeling we might just do them, the first goal if there are any, will be crucial. It's time for our big players to step up to the plate.
