The Times, Matt Hughes: "Given that his boss is the man who has everything, it is perhaps just as well that Avram Grant has promised Roman Abramovich the earth. In his first programme notes, the Chelsea first-team coach pledged to provide trophies, entertainment and winning football - everything, indeed, but the proverbial moon on a stick. Five weeks to the day since being handed the ultimate hospital pass, he is in danger of delivering. José who? Grant is yet to hear his name chanted at Stamford Bridge, but that prospect is no longer as fanciful as it once appeared."
The Independent, Sam Wallace: "What do Chelsea and Gelsenkirchen, the gritty industrial Ruhr hometown of Schalke, have in common? Neither of them are really built with entertainment in mind. Avram Grant's mission is to change all that and usher in a new era of fantasy football at Stamford Bridge, although for the time being it looks suspiciously like he is happy to win matches by any means possible."
Daily Telegraph, John Ley: "Mourinho finished his Chelsea career with three games without a win; Grant has won five of his last six even if at times last night the hosts rode their luck. Schalke were deprived of key striker Kevin Kuranyi in the warm-up before having a 'goal' disallowed for offside, striking a post and, towards the end, being deprived of another scoring opportunity through a blatant 'professional foul' by Alex."
The Guardian, Kevin McCarra: "This period of seclusion might just be to Chelsea's taste. They consolidated at the top of Group B without inspiring any bullish predictions that they are set to win the Champions League. No one is fixated with them for the time being. Even the referee Peter Frojdfeldt did not pay much attention when Alex, after perpetrating a short backpass, brought down Schalke's Soren Larsen in the 85th minute. Somehow, no foul was awarded, no red card shown."
Official Chelsea FC Website: "Rosenborg's win against Valencia means [Chelsea has] a healthy three point cushion at the top [of Group B]."
Good quality videos available here.
Didier Drogba. His importance to the team cannot be underestimated.
While there hasn't been any noticeable improvement in performances under Avram Grant, at least in this game we continued to press after going 2-0 up. Mourinho probably would have been happy to sit back and defend and hit Schalke on the break.
Clutching at straws? Perhaps. I still believe that it will take a significant change of player personnel to produce the kind of football Grant has promised.
We looked fairly solid (apart form Alex's ballerina moment) if unspectacular.
Schalke aren't the greatest team, and yet looked dangerous on occasions. Well still seem to have patches of completely switching off at set pieces.
I was disappointed by Joe Cole, thought the only thing he did consistently was lose the ball - would have like to see him replaced by SWP but he wasn't even on the bench !!! Expect to hear more on that .....
Great to see Lamps back to something like his best, although his set piece delivery hasn't improved while he's been away !! Didn't think he looked particularly happy in his post-match interview. Hopefully nothing more than tiredness.
A decent platform to build on for what will undoubtedly be a tough game versus the Mancs on Saturday.
Up the Blues !!!
Joe Cole slipped into his old ways during the time he was out injured. I noticed him showboating more when playing for England a couple months ago. Mourinho preferred SWP at the time, perhaps for this very reason.
Now Mourinho's gone and Cole's continued in his old ways. Perhaps he's just too stupid to remember all that Mourinho taught him - which made him a great player - or perhaps it's a conscious decision. Either way, he has no-one to blame but himself if his career suffers.
Joe Cole has not forgotten how to defend, though. He did a lot of good defensive work which was something missing from his game a few years go.
I thought that there was too much reliance on Makalele as a distributor in the back field which was not great at times. That improved when Mikel came on and who, once he has learned how to tackle, will be a big asset. For all the professed new style of play, the endless stroking of the ball in the back field has a decidedly TSO look. Much of Chelsea's game still was based on the (very) quick counter attack, so again not much seems to have changed there.
About 10 minutes from the end, I was thinking that the defense had had a good game since there was no one player who stood out in a fairly competent display (though Cech's embarassed smile when the rebound dropped into his arms was priceless). Then suddenly Alex did his star turn. In his defense, his back pass was the last of a succession of poor passes. At least Ricky is there to stabilise things. I can't imagine how we would play with Ben Haim and Alex together.
Paulo's centre for Drogba to score was the best moment of the evening. The perfect centre. Joey Cole could learn a thing or two from that but probably won't.
Yeah, it has to be said, he did look a bit silly at times last night.
I can't imagine him just doing it off his own back though. My guess would be that Grant has given him free reign to "express himself", as a way of showing that he intends to play entertaining football.
As a consequence, I think Joe was just trying too hard.
Thats why i was surprised to see Alex sticking out 'alone' in Nick's 'Bad' section. I thot Joe Cole did more than enough to share the space with Alex (if at all)...'cos if u ask me, i believe that was the one bad moment alex had in a relatively steady defence.
I think there was plenty of good movements in the way we played yesterday...the guys adopted a positive, attacking and domineering attitude...almost made me wonder if it was the same schalke that missed the bundesliga title by the whiskers some months back....
Like something's cooking at the bridge...i can percieve the sweet aroma...
Always blue!
I believe Joe Cole has the talent of Rooney but it has been stifled under JM in order to get him to "teamplayer" status. Whatever you think of Sir Rednose, he seems to have tamed Rooney into an effective player (albeit with the odd flash of rage). I think Joe will calm down and stop trying to impress everyone, after all during the last winning season he was pivotal in being the creative force behind our play. After a season out I think he just deserves the chance to shine, but AG needs to have a quiet word in his ear about calming down.
More worrying is the apparent cold shouldering of SWP. He's been one of the brighter parts of our season thus far, reflected in his recent England displays (Aaron who?). Anyone have any knowledge of why he's not being picked?
SWP not being picked or even on the bench is of concern considering his form as of late, which has been exceptional. One can only hope Tony... is that he's carrying a slight knock, which I might add hasn't been reported anywhere.
I thought we looked better against boro than we did against Ze Germans. I thought Lampard looked tired midweek as well. I wouldn't mind seeing ginger steve sidwell in the lineup against sven's lot.
AG could be resting SWP for the upcoming Man City match. I hope he get some goals against his old club.
One thing I noticed - not a single song for Mourinho - one I could hear anyway. Nor for Steve Clarke. The transition in management is nearly complete.
I think SWP might be on his way out this time......
Whilst his early season form was good (and certainly the best it has ever been for Chelsea), I definitely wouldn't describe it as 'exceptional' as Clive indicated above.
To leave him out of the squad of 18 though, is a big kick in the teeth and I don't think he will hang about for more of the same.
I agree with the show-boating comments regarding Cole. He is, for my money, far more effective when he has a specific task to fill, and doesn't seem to have the pace of the world's best wingers, with which to beat his man.
Still, I think we will beat City comfortably on Saturday, and the season will then be back on track.
i think joe cole does quite well.
1.JC wins lots of freekicks against opponents its only a few blind who thinks he is doing too much of it ..just count how many matches he has played and makes the opponets get booked ..
2. u also need abit of show ponnying to break your opponents .
it works by drawing opponents to jc so that he creates space for the strikers to score.in chelsea players ie attacking midfielders and strikers dont really rely on team work ...maybe arsenal but unlike us they lack more of individual players
3 I watch football for entertainment there is no other chelsea player id love to watch except joe cole the rest are too one dimensional and predictable in what they are doing lamps..... essien(CURRENTLY OUT OF FORM) ........malouda
Joe might well be a little over-eager at present as Tony mentioned, only time will tell. But it would be a shame if he's forgotten everything positive he's learnt in recent years - bamboozling the oppo with plenty of tricks and flicks is all well and good, but if there is no end result you may as well have a performing seal on the pitch instead.
SWP's omission seems odd - seen no suggestion that he was injured. Can't do much for his confidence to finally find his feet and then be sidelined again and it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see him go if that were the case.
there we go again english (chelsea) fans not knowing their most naturally gifted footballer and not wanting to appreciate his attacking flair... even going as far as mentioning rooney (he did nothing at the world cup and he will do nothing to make u reach euro)
thumbs down once again
verdict=boring football :
this is the shear reason a nation ended up choosing macca OVA erickson)()
current status(DEMON DANCE))
We're well aware that Joe Cole is a very gifted footballer Dickson; it's simply that he often doesn't use his brain in conjunction with his natural skill. Not often I agree with Rafa, but his analysis of Gerrard's performance in the Merseyside derby and the reasoning behind his substitution was spot on - sometimes you need the head as much as the heart to succeed.
Some o Lampard's passing was fantastic. That second goal was brilliant. Into Drogba, back to Lamps, quick pass out to Ferreira and BANG!!!
The worrying thing for me isn't Joe Cole's showboating - no harm in having one player who tries to do things a bit different - it was how many chances our top striker got during the 90 mins.
For all the talk about exciting attacking stuff, he had one chance and buried it. We werent exactly breaking down their door. You'd have to say, he doesn't get too many goal-scoring chances per game playing for us.
Thought Lampard could have joined Drogba more often. The only time he did do it we scored a goal.
And what the hell has happened to Pizarr. The guy has always done pretty well when he's played. Better touch and passing than a lot of our midfielders.
BTW ESSIEN was shockingly bad again. Surprised no one's mentioned it. Can' seem to pass straight, and does some pretty daft things when he could play our players through on goal.
Thank goodness they seen sense and dropped Wright-phillips. He can go off to Man city again. Wont' cut the mustard if his best is what we've seen so far this season.
Talk about no end product. How many times have you seen SWP waste good openings? Never has control of the ball, puts in one decent cross in about ten attempts, that;'s only when he doesn't trip over himself.
Cashif.... i think your last statement should actually be for J.Cole and not Essien.
Cole was the wasteful one in that match and it was a good thing Ferreira drove forward to 'show' him what he should be doing with the ball. We'v got a deadly striker in the box but rather than make the expected ball delivery into the box, he consistently opted to play to the gallery. On some occasions when he could have gone for the simple 'touch n go', he opted to wait for the defender to come to him so he can show-boat....and in the process, lost the ball
JC is good quite alright....but he should know when to apply what skills, thats the mark of a true professional!
Looking forward to another 3 points tomorrow...that should set us in good stead for the title race as some teams on top of us are expected to slip this weekend...
Always Blue!
Interesting....
Cashif make no mention of Lampard joining into the attack lest you offend a few out here.
Essien too has been off-colour IMO. Joe Cole may have had his tricks in the last game but you only muster when you try...Ask Ronaldo at ManU...Live example how a clown made a king
I don't understand why Malouda is under 'good'. He just refuses to play on the left wing like he should and doesn't seem bothered. Needs to pull his finger out and actually play on the wing rather than drift into the centre and clog up the midfield.
I definitely agree with you about the give n go bit, Alex. But Essien is supposed to be good at doing things simple and effectively -- unlike Joe Cole who's game is about the unpredictable stuff.
Southside Bucky makes an interesting point. Could be some truth in the idea that Joe Cole is being encouraged to play this way.
He looked knackered towards the end of the game. Whatever he does now, I dont think anyone can argue Joe Cole isn't one of the most ahrd working Chelsea players out there on the pitch (even though that does slip into gerrardesqueness at times).
Cashif. I can't remember exactly which game it was now (Valencia?), but in a Sky post match interview, Joe intimated that he was being allowed more freedom by Grant. His face betrayed his obvious glee!
Can't help thinking that the twinkle toe stepovers and attempted dummies are unnecessary though. He'd be much more affective if he kept it simple most of the time.
But I'm sure He'll realise that himself soon enough.
WOW. You know something special has just happened when Shev. scores. Wondeful all around performance. But MoM goes to Essien for sure. Clinical finish, and his reading and passing of the game proved that perhaps, he really is the best CM in the world right now. On another note, Frank was back to his best.
Not sure I'd agree about MoM -- but who's quibbling? (My vote would go to Frank, who had the kind of game that reminded everyone why he was voted the world's secongbest player not so long ago.) It was indeed great to see Essien play so well after his slightly ropey start to the season. In fact the midfield performance was even more impressive given than Elano really gave Mikel the run-around. Kalou made his usual ghastly mess of one good chance but otherwise played brilliantly. The back four were fab (expecially Ferreira playing out of position) -- maybe having an all-Portuguese-speaking unit is they key? That was a wonderful game to be at -- just what we all needed. I don't have much time for Grant but if the new regime is going to produce the occasional performance like that then no one can complain.
And yes it was very telling that old Sheva got his goal. He'd quite clearly been stuck on for the last fifteen minutes or so so that he could get a confidence-boosting goal against a defence that has already thrown in the towel, and it was revealing to see the team working hard to get him an opening. He also got a fair bit of love from the fans. All of which suggests to me that any rifts opened up in the squad between the pro- and anti-Mourinho people may be beginning to heal.
Another interesting thing I noticed. When Drogba came off, as he went to sit on the bench behind the coaching staff, he made a point of reaching across to shake Ten Cate's hand. (After his first goal he also seemed to wave at the bench and got a thumbs up from Grant.) Maybe Ten Cate is proving to be a figure the players respect, and it surely helps that he has no previous connection to either the Mourinho or the Abramovich camp.
Fantastic to watch. It'll be nice to have a few days of the press wretches gurgling about how great we are, before the next dreary performance starts them all off again on how boring we are. (Deep analysis we get in the papers here, eh?)
(Bet none of you knew about Frank picking up that World Secongbest Award, incidentally.)
A full review from your man on the spot will follow tonight or tomorrow depending on how much Guinness is consumed!
Will look forward to the review Tony. I was going to the game but real life got in the way and a friend got my ticket instead, "lucky bastard" which he's been reminding me of for most of the evening.
Sweet Lord, it seems I missed our game of the season (so far), I'm glad that five players scored today...
on the other hand, it seems that the press is focusing on ManUre getting top of the list, so limetreebower, maybe unless we get the quadruple the press won't notice, which I think is really doable this year.
I liked your remarks about Ten Cate, really hope he will shake things around a bit.
another 6-0 maybe?
Blue will always be THE color
I have lost count...But I would love to say if Lamps plays like that again with heart and skill I will forever feel stupid about my earlier comments...That pass for Drogba's goal simply beautiful...
Did Man City even show up?????
Lovely game lovely display please more of the same more of the same....
There is only one Franky Lampard (unless you count Franky Lampard snr... and any others who are named Franky Lampard....
I'm going to go ahead and take credit for being the only one to have predicted the quadruple this season. And spurs are going down to the soda-pop league.
Hmmmmm.....Something's definitely cooking at the bridge like i said earlier.....and i love the aroma!
Wondering what has changed 'cos these are the same players we'v been using before now...
Whatever it is though....i want MORE!
Always Blue!
Talk about 'effective policing'...mikel practically ran elano out of the field. Little wonder ericsson had to sub him...
I want MORE!
Always Blue!
Top result and a great game - one of those days where it all clicks into place.
Interesting to read about Ten Cate's influence since his arrival - no nonsense appears to be the order of the day. Essien played superbly, Drogba and Lampard both excellent.
Lord knows what happens to City away from home though; they fell to bits after the third goal. Also provided a classic example of over-hyping an English player in Micah Richards - he's done well recently and has huge potential but he got a serious lesson from the Chelsea front line yesterday.

Dullish game and the Bridge was subdued, with the loudest cheer saved for Liverpools score being displayed on the screen.
Re Bridgey's suspension; I think it's grossly unfair that you can be suspended for getting sent off in a reserve game yet subsequent reserve games don't count in serving your 3 match ban.
The one thing that stuck out for me last night was Joe Cole's return to his show pony days before JM dropped him and ultimately made him a far better team player.
He does have some fancy footwork, but lacks the explosive pace to get away from players once he's beaten them. His choices were quite poor on a few occasions last night shooting when he should have passed etc.
Some sublime passing by Frank though glad he's back!
