Champions League draw: Chelsea v. Valencia

Friday, 09 March 07, 05:22 PM · Comments (14)

Chelsea will play Valencia in the quarter-finals of this season's Champions League.

All three English sides left in the competition were drawn against foreign teams.

Quarter-final draw:

AC Milan v. Bayern Munich PSV Eindhoven v. Liverpool Roma v. Manchester United Chelsea v. Valencia

First legs to be played on 3rd/4th April and second legs on 10th/11th April.

The winners of the Chelsea versus Valencia tie will play the winners of the PSV Eindhoven versus Liverpool tie in the semi-final.

In other news, Andriy Shevchenko has denied giving an interview to a German website in which it was claimed he was made the scapegoat for Jose Mourinho's "public spat" with Roman Abramovich.

"This is complete rubbish. I have never spoken to this German website or to the journalist who claims to have interviewed me," Shevchenko said on the official club website.

Both Shevchenko and Chelsea are considering what further action to take against Sport.ARD.de.

And finally, David Beckham could make his LA Galaxy debut against Chelsea when the club tour the United States for the fourth consecutive year this coming summer.

Fantastic - the only downside is we play at home first, I always prefer the home leg second and then you know what you've got to do, plus you celebrate in front of your own fans.

Let's also take into account that Valencia could find themselves without key players due to the "proper" fight after Inter. A fight that made the Carling Cup episode look like kindergarten argument over a Curly-Wurly.

Bring it on!

Let's hope Valencia get properly punished by UEFA for what was quite a ruckus.

Valencia v. Inter Milan fight.

I agree with Tony about the home and away legs. It's better i think if the second match is at home.If we reach semifinals we 'll play the second match away too.
Few minutes ago Mr Kenyon interviewed by a greek journalist and told that Jose is not leaving the club even if he don't win another trophy this year."Jose has a long term contract with us and he is going to be at Chelsea next year"

Mistic Chelsea Beef predicts a Chelsea Vs. ManUre final, knocking out the scouse rodents first.

I'm all doom and gloom, convinced UEFA are still secretly punishing us for the Anders Frisk 'disagreement'. It has to be more than coincidence we're at home first in both the QF and SF.

Regardless, I seem to be in a minority hoping it's not an all English final - we're o.k against European teams, but ManUSA or Liverpool in the final is just another league game (albeit in Greece). And we haven't done well against them recently.

I think PSV and Roma are beatable, so ManUSA and the 'Pool are through, probably with AC Milan and us. Anfield away in the SF second leg, would be nice to knock them out in front of the Kop.

Extra training at Cobham is required, mainly in the ring, in case Valencia's sub keeper decides to kick someone then run away.....

I'm not sure a 2nd leg at home is an advantage because you can easily get caught out in the last few minutes. The last 20 minutes against Porto were nerve-wracking because if they'd scored we'd have needed to score 2. And look at what happened to Arsenal.

Is the draw fixed because UEFA have rigged it so that only one English team can reach the final.

Think that's a tough draw. Valencia for me are the toughest of the non-English sides and the ones I wanted to avoid, along with the NW Reds. Could be tricky.

Marks got a good point,

first leg's at home, so aslong as we don't conseed more then one away goal we can go to the second leg and score two or three away goals which puts the game beyond the reach of the home team.

Definitely the toughest draw.

I love the potential symmetry though of Liverpool knocking out Barca then us knocking them out in the semi... Would be sweet revenge for 05.

I think it is a really tough draw,as well.

I read somewhere that only 2 players have been charged by UEFA after the brawl with Inter, and one of those was the kick and run substitute. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Yes only two Valencia players charged for brawl.
Uefa has confirmed it will charge Valencia and Internazionale with improper conduct over the fight that broke out at the end of Tuesday's Champions League tie. The European governing body will also bring gross unsporting conduct charges against Inter's Iván Córdoba, Maicon and Nicolás Burdisso as well as Valencia's Carlos Marchena and David Navarro. The latter yesterday apologised for the punch that broke Burdisso's nose and started the brawl.

Chelsea are set to play a good euro team, but they have a chance to beat them, I rate they'll go for it, Jose wants as many titles as possible. I'm backing Chelsea as usual, they can do it. Bring on the finals, Rooney!

It's a "tough" draw, but to be honest anything is "tough" at this stage of the competition.ManUre got Roma, which is probably the "easiest" draw but Roma knocked out Lyon - one of the most impressive teams in the CL so far - out of the competition 2-0. It's time for revenge against Morientes for the Monaco game about ooh three years back and hopefully the Red Scousers in the semis. Come on Blues!

Oh Cum on... We all know there is no match b/w Chelsea and Valencia. Also I would luv to see the final b/w Chelsea and MANU and Chelsea winning the same. Wish them luck.
