Chelsea as the bogeyman

Wednesday, 22 August 07, 02:48 PM · Comments (50)

Am I the only one scratching my head over this Juande-Ramos-to-Chelsea-if-something-happens-with-Jose-Mourinho story? Guillem Balague of Sky Sports claims Fabio Capello told Ramos at a meeting in Madrid a few days ago that he has friends at Chelsea who “think the world of him” and who are lining him up to replace Mourinho if the latter, for one reason or other, moves on. Now, since when has Capello become a managerial recruitment consultant for Chelsea when he himself needs a job, having just been sacked by the most notorious Mickey Mouse outfit in world football? How naive is Ramos to sit in Sevilla and wait for that call from Roman Abramovich when there is no obvious vacancy at Stamford Bridge now or in the near future? Or, is this just another journalistic ploy to unsettle the Chelsea hierarchy once more now that peace has broken out between Jose and Roman? Perhaps Ramos is so confident that by the end of his present contract term at Sevilla in June next year, Chelsea would be in need of a new manager and he, in a list of one, would be the one to fill that vacancy. And maybe he possesses an iron-clad guarantee that he will remain the shining managerial star he’s been in these past two seasons of dominating the UEFA and Spanish cups. However, if he thinks winning the Champions League the Mourinho way (with a medium-sized club with a medium-sized budget) is a cakewalk, I have a sneaky feeling that reality will dawn harshly after AEK Athens.

I don’t know, but it seems to me that our interest in Daniel Alves is having so many intended and unintended consequences. The impression being created by this story is simple — we are behind the managerial uncertainties at Sevilla, using Tottenham as front. And why else must we be doing so, but to further rattle Seà±or Jose Maria del Nido and his board by opening up another front in our ‘war’ with him (though indirectly) over one of their best players. The guy must feel he’s under a Chelsea siege right now. Not only are we gunning for his star player, we’re lining up his star manager as well! It’s a virtual certainty now that when clubs catch cold anywhere in Europe, Chelsea have got to be responsible somehow for their state.

But, perhaps there could be a simpler explanation. Just as players looking for bigger pay from their employers use the threat of an imminent Chelsea swoop (real or imagined) to get their way, Ramos and his handlers might simply be doing the same to untie the purse strings of the incredibly parsimonious Jose Maria del Nido. If this is the case, I certainly won’t be complaining.

That's an interesting thought. Spuds have often been the stalking horse for a bigger predator (wittingly or not). I'll be watching this space...

Robben to Real Madrid
It's a pity, but for the best...

Belleti to Chelsea
He's no Alves, but still a very good attacking right-back. I once saw him play a game and thought he was really great. Perhaps Mourinho can bring the best out of him. And he score the winning Champions League final goal! Against Arsenal!!!
And this is a lesson to all the clubs thinking they can force overpriced players on our precious Russian. Not anymore.
Poor Alves, he's too nice. I'm a defender of further player autonomy. I mean, this guy worked his butt six years for Sevilla and still they won't let him go. (Unless crazy Real Madrid gets him, but I doubt).

Well it appears the Robben saga is finally over. I am keen to know what price we got for him. I have to say I am really disappointed that we let him go. Sure he can be a little injury prone but on his day he adds such directness to our play. Does that leave us with just Malouda, J. Cole and SWP as our wingers? I suppose you could put Kalou in there as well but only when we play 4-3-3, not 4-4-2.

I take a lot of hope from the fact that most people on this blog seem happy to see him go. I myself think we have lost one of our most creative players that was young and getting stronger with age. but if we win the PL and CL this season then fair enough. If we don't - I think losing Robben will be a big contribution to losing out on it again.

Let's hope we use the money to buy a good right-back - although I still really like Paulo and Glenn. Sure Paulo's form is not great and Glenn is prone to error in defense, but going forward i don't think Alves is much better. If anyone can teach discpline in defense to Glenn it's Jose. I'd rather we put in a massive bid for another young starlet like Pato "the Duck" or Renato Augusto.

Here's to Jose and hoping losing the flying Dutchman was not his biggest ever blunder.

Well Robben's finally gone. Maybe it's my naivety, but could we leave it any later to finalise it, leaving not much of the transfer window left.

Whether we'll make a direct replacement is unclear, but RB is still an issue. Madrid also signed Heinze but they'll probably get Alves as well, then we're left without our first choice - someone we've clearly spent a lot of time pursuing.

Sheva's an interesting one. Not so much as an appearance in a squad this season, yet manages to run the show for Ukraine last night. Conspiracy you say.....

I'll apologise in advance for this - to anyone who's not English, or just can't be ar5ed with the National side - but Mrs Fifty isn't receptive to my post-match feedback from last night.

I cant understand why the FA persist in backing the clown-prince of International management. The blokes got as much tactical nous as my 11-month old. He appears to have no motivation. Plan B ??? He doesnt even have a Plan A.

His squad selections are a farce. He's like a kids team manager who always picks his son (Stewart Downing anyone??). Wes Brown is as likely to be an International footballer as I am Heir to Hugh Hefners throne at the Playboy mansion.

Fair enough the injuries we have didn't help, but we lost at home to Germany reserves. We're simply not going to qualify for Euro 2008.

At 27, I've already seen the best my National side has to offer. And that's depressing.

Belleti?

Okay it's a pity we can't get Alves, Sevilla are really steronging it will the asking price. So Why on gods green earth would we buy a 31 year old who doesn't play first team football.......when Micha Richards is 19 and is the best right back i've seen for a long time and is proven in the prem! I think he's worth well over £20m on his current form. BUY BUY BUY!

As for this Ramos talk, do me a favour! Why would we want another manager? We already have the best in world football.

Shame about Robben; he could end up European Footballer of the Year with a pile of medals to his name, or he might retire in 3 years due to persistent injury problems, you just don't know with a guy of his seemingly rather fragile nature (both physically and mentally, to an extent).

Wonder if the Belleti story isn't just something to try and gee up Sevilla on Alves?

Tottenham nearly getting a new manager? Hmm, like when they nearly signed Rivaldo (and many others...)

Wouldn't be hugely surprised if someone somewhere hadn't had a quiet word in Ramos's ear about coming here if Jose decides to bail at some point. If he has turned down other offers, it is either a bargaining tool as previously stated or possibly because he's holding out for something bigger.

Yeah definitely gutted that things didn't work out with Robben. Could have been a Chelsea legend for sure if his head was in the right place and to a certain extent of course his fragile body could take the requirements of a modern day footballer. He was frightening in his first season, but good luck to him and Madrid. If they can keep him fit he will definitely be a fan favourite at the Bernabeau.

Is this Alves saga not getting to anybody yet. It's really frustrating me now, he's no way near worth £27m. I think Sevilla are lucky we even offerend them £20m for him. The lads had one decent season and it automatically bumps a 20mil price tag to him. And please don't let us by Belleti, if we all thought Arjen was prone to a dive or two, this guy takes diving and rolling around to another level. We don't need to give the Chelsea boo boys another reason to start up on another one of our players!

My personal opinion might be to try and push through Mancienne or Hutchinson at right back. Both are exceptional talents, Hutchinson reminds of a shorter, quicker Terry. Get a few games under their belts, couple of mentions in the paper of their quality and their confidence goes soaring through the roof. Pretty sure they would both be sufficient enough to fill this never ending right back problem.

Well, I assume for a striker that scored five, or so, goals in PL even attempt can be considered as shinig.

Gutted with the way Robben's Chelsea career panned out in the end after such a promising start - really always believed he was going to become a legend at Chelsea one day. Our very own Thierry Henry. Oh well, hopefully he will score loads of goals against the Barscum!

Would like to see us invest the money to help with a future expansion of the stadium or other improvements, rather than just flinging it at more overpriced players. Or reducing ticket prices for a few weeks!

Is this a new record sale for us?? I hear it's £24.5M

Yeah, real shame about Arjen. I kind of wish him well despite the fact he was such a wimpy, cheating, whinging Dutchman.

Not sure about Belletti at all. Why the hell is it so difficult to sign a right a back? This is the easiest position on the pitch to play - basically if you can kick the ball with your right foot, that's it, you're in. But still, we struggle.

This has the horrible rushed feeling of the signing of a certain Dutchman last summer...

As Bruce Buck has pointed out, we're apparently past paying inflated transfer fees (must have been implemented after the £30m was wired to a Milan bank account a year ago and we got a suspicious imposter instead of a World beater).

Man City would want silly money for Richards based on current form, even more so now Frank Shinawatra is bank rolling them.

I don't really get the signing of Belletti. From what I've seen of him, he offers nothing more than Paulo or Glen - seems a bit stupid really. Nice little payday for him though, 2 year contract at 31.

Alas, it's done so we'll have to see if it pans out, or if he ends up being as shoddy as our other RB's. I think we should have gone for Philip Lahm from Bayern.

Still, at least we've cover in all areas and if this allows us to play essien in midfield every game, i'll be happy.

Belletti seems a pretty good player (anyone who scores a winner against Arsenal in the CL Final has my vote), but is clearly a stopgap. Neither Ferreira or Johnson are bad players and play a little differently, so maybe the idea is to select horses for courses. In a year or two, maybe we'll have someone out of the reserves (Hutchinson if he can play on the right is an obvious possibility). Of course, Seville will be paying people to take Alves off their hands next year, so maybe that is the strategy since I can't see Madrid paying out another 25 mil after the 30 mil they must have spent to get Heinze and Robben. It is probably the only way in which Chelsea can deflate the expectations of teams when they come calling.

As for Robben, I regret his going since when fit (a big if) he was a very useful player indeed, one of the few who can swing a match all on his own. Pity about his big head. Being with the Galacticos won't help that unless he can't get any games, and then he'll never stop moaning.

I think Heinze will be ultimately of more value to Madrid than Robben. Thank goodness he did not go to Liverpool, made sweeter by its effect on Rafa who seems to have gone ballistic on not getting him. I get the impression Rafa is losing it.

Considering it's one of the most politically unstable clubs out there, they get through presidents and managers like they're going out of fashion. Robben may have wished he'd stay put, especially if any new manager doesn't see him as part of the plans, and that would certainly be the case if his constant injuries keep him on the sidelines.

i'm sad to see the boy go but he wasn't looking any fitter this year than last and the profit is certainly encouraging. if shaun continues his current form, malouda proves to be as good as he's seemed and joe can transition back into the squad, we'll barely miss him. and the prospect of more sinclair is an added benefit.

beletti i know very little about but it sure would be nice to find a right back and stick with him.

Hmm.. the Robben thing has rumbled on all summer so I'm glad that it's finally resolved, and I tend to think that given the sulkiness he's displayed in the last two years, and the not-so-thinly veiled comments from Jose and Bruce Buck "Ask him why he wants to go..." "He should tell all the Chelsea fans why he wants to leave..." that he was never going to give his all for the club again, if indeed he ever did. Great first season showing lots of promise, but for me didn't seem to have his heart in it for the last two years. It's like he thought that being physically challenged for the ball was unfair, the look he'd give when his runs didn't come off, talented player but I think Jose questioned his attitude. I wonder if he will perform the 'subdued' goal celebration that former players seem to respect, should he score if we meet in the future?

I would have loved to see him put together a long run in the team without injury and see what he could produce, but it wasn't to be.

Clive,

You've made a good point about Real being unstable.

People only have to look at how things turned out for Beckham to realise that the board making the signings is by no means a guarantee that the annually appointed new manager will select them. From week-in week-out regular, to training with the kids. And Beckham had the drive and determination to get back in the team - Robben when dropped will just sulk and try and move elsewhere.

Based on what I've seen of FloMa so far, I dont miss Robben - or his diving. SWP's start to the season has been a bonus, and with Sinclair and Joe Cole (and Kalou - but not if I picked the team !!!) to play wide, we'll be fine.

On his day, Robben was, and will continue to be, a world-beater. Just a shame 'his day' appears to be as regular as February 29th.

Alves would have been for me the final bit of the jigsaw, pity he's not coming, but it's clear from Bruce Buck's comments that they won't pay inflated prices for players so maybe Belleti is a dependable stop-gap until January, maybe Micah Richards is another case of too much having been asked for the player because they know Roman could sanction whatever they ask for. It's still a very good squad at the moment and if they begin to really fire it should be a great year as the spirit grows now the squad is settled. As for The Rotund One and his bleating about ref issues it's shoe-other-foot and pot-kettle-black syndrome, such a sanctimonious prat,
