England gets behind Barcelona

Tuesday, 21 February 06, 05:38 PM · Comments (44)

From Toxteth to Tottenham. From Mile End to Moss Side. England will be united on Wednesday evening. Sharing the same dream. Feeling the same hope. Willing the same outcome. Not since 1966 has the nation lined up so passionately behind a football team. Except for a small, Blue corner of West London. Where, according to popular myth, a rag tag collection of aging hooligans, Russian gangsters, bored rugby fans, glory hunters called Crispin and Japanese tourists will be making a futile last stand for the Antichrist.

Journalists have been falling over themselves to declare their allegiance. Liverpool goalkeepers, Arsenal midfielders (you bitch!), Spanish managers, UEFA officials, Brazil (the nation, not the fat Scot on TalkDrivel but probably him as well), Permed Swedish Referees for Gay Whales, everyone who is anyone in the wide, wide world of football is rubbing their hands in anticipation.

It's rumoured that James Lawton has hired a hooker, as he expects to get an erection for the first time since the late Seventies. It just feels so right. Those lovely Boys from Barca. They play such joyous football. They will put the Evil Empire back on its arse. Tony has already spoken to Gordon about making Thursday 'Thank God for Catalonia Day'. Gorgeous.

If I'm honest I love it. Love it to pieces. Do it over the kitchen table love it. I would hate it, loathe it, despise it, agonise over it, if any of those little knob jockeys in the press claimed they wanted a Chelsea victory. I would be ashamed if fans of Tottenham or Liverpool, or anyone similarly afflicted, were not fervently praying for a Barcelona victory.

The omens are good. Chelsea are not the same team as last year. Our defence is leaky. Understatement. I think the only team who haven't scored against us this year are shot shy Liverpool. Everyone else, including Colchester United, has managed at least one goal. Middlesbrough got three in one game. In one game! Last season we didn't let in three in three months. Jesus. We've had it.

Gallas, who many (correctly in my opinion) say is our best defender, will not play. Terry is carrying an injury, Lampard is exhausted, Duff anonymous, Robben too busy falling over, Drogba has no control, Crespo is dreaming of Milan, SWP is dreaming of Eastlands (poor kid), Essien is suspended, Bridge is at Fulham.

Hey Ruud Our only hope may be to get Rudi Voeller to come and join Mourinho on the bench. But perhaps not within spitting distance of the Barcelona manager. I wonder if Jose has considered offering his mate Frank Rijkaard a bye into the next round? Perhaps Bruce Buck should call UEFA HQ and offer to concede the tie right now, in the interests of football. In the interests of decency. In the interests of the Rogan Taylor Fund for Siberian Oil Orphans.

To make things worse I watched this video of Ronaldinho, in training. He was chipping a ball against the cross bar, and getting it to bounce straight back to his feet. Every time. He didn't miss once. Not the goal you understand. Just the crossbar. He was outside the penalty area. That's impossible. But he did it. Who have we got marking him? Spiderman?

Plus, to make things even bleaker, we have to play the second leg in Barcelona. Your mission Jose, should you decide to accept it. Can't be done can it. If it wasn't Mission Impossible already that certainly clinches the deal. Barcelona will know exactly what they have to do. On their own ground. In front of 90,000 fans. And a Scandinavian referee who was an altar boy with Anders Frisk. Oh dear.

The last time I remember a game anything vaguely like this, where a team of the shining light was lined up against the forces of darkness, was in the 1974 World Cup Final. All out attack merchants, talented wonder boys and general lovable, good guys Holland (including honorary Catalan Mr Johan Cruff) were lined up against a team of well organised, despicable storm troopers. Someone remind me who won that game?

So come on Barcelona. England Expects.

I think it'll be a good game, although I don't see that everyone is behind barca. Even though Jose called my kind ugly this week, I stil want the English team to win.

Well, it's an entertaining read but all a bit paranoid. As a Newcastle fan I'd like to see Chelsea beat Barcelona (the only British team I actively want to lose in Europe are Man Utd), but if you keep on with this persecution complex and continue to believe in some media conspiracy against you, you'll lose the goodwill of neutral supporters and become just like those that flock to the Glazerdome from Sussex each weekend.

I think the nation is split as to whether they get behind us or not, it depends on who they follow. I must say I was rooting for Airline FC last night (although fairly delighted when I heard Benfica had scored also!), though the two English players featuring in the match were both playing for Real Madrid. It is the media more than anything that encourage large numbers to go against the English team when it's Chelsea we're talking about.

Let's hope the ref has a good fair game. It will give us a chance.

No persecution complex here - there are quite a number of pundits and journos openly supporting Barca. Fine by us!

Blingo - James Lawton with an erection? The sound of vomiting echoes across the nation...

Not all, am a gooner and a chavski hating one at that, but there are two reasons I want you to win, 1) For england's chances of regaining the tile of best teams in europe and 2) so we can face you in the final and clear up some unfinsished business.

Good luck am sure your lovely turf will be aiding you.

I agree that there are elements of the press rooting for Barca, and it's got nothing to do with having a 'persecution complex', but aren't some people missing the satire in Blingo's article?

I'm sure a high percentage of the Portuguese population and the Portuguese media (I guess all of them) are backing Chelsea. I would also add to that tens of millions of Portuguese speakerss all over the world (am not so sure about Brazil, though).

I always support the English or Scottish team in Europe (other than ManUre-can't stand the scum) and I'm a Spurs fan. I genuinely hope Chelsea win. The only thing I back Barcelona with is, I hope they buy Henry, then the Gooners will be in trouble in the Premiership!

typical chelsea fan want everyone to hte them just because they think they are the best. Wake up. you think your the best you've one championship one league cup! Mourinho is no the gospel on football cause he spent £100 million to make a champions league team into champions. Not hard any manager in the prem could do it. Soon Chelsea will sing 'no-one likes use we don't care'. i for one dont like you and i hope you do lose! And i hope that Ambramovich (or however you spell it) gets bored and leaves you millions in debt and with a ridiculous wage bill and you do a Leeds!

Never happy! All you guys have done since been gifted the wealth to do as you please, is complain about how every single living thing on the planet is against you! Maybe people will get behind you more if you didn't moan so much. But let's face it the reason people want Barca to win is because you had your chance last season but for 180 minutes couldn't get a goal against Liverpool. Yet still complained about how you should of won- doesn't quite make sense? Plus the best player for the last 15 years is playing for Barca, i'd rather watch Ronaldino dazzle his way to the final, than have to listen to a group of players, management and fans decent into a state of paranoia normally assoicated with Man U fans!

Oh dear, yet another Barca nonce gets a Chelsea player sent off by rolling around in agony. Clearly Del horno was clumsy and should have been booked but sent off? Your having a laugh. On the replays it clear shows NEITHER went for the ball. I guess we should hope for a 0-0 and then go to Barca with a bloody bigger chip on our shoulder and out and out revenge on our minds. Lets just hope the players on one more card can keep out of trouble because we'll need every player possible for outt there.

football purists want Barcelona to win, rather than Boringho.

Although, we can expect boringho to blame the ref, the players, garcia for scoring a goal last year, injuries, the weather, and of couse there will be someone diving, but that won't stop him from bringing it up.

Barcelona will hopefully win, and get revenge for the goal unfairly scored by you when you beat them last year.

Boringho=Houllier with money. This is coming from a liverpool fan too. at least with Rafa we can see our football getting better over time.

Good result for Arsenal however. Lets hope that Barca do the same to the russian hoofballs.

(of course this won't be posted, as it goes against chelsea)

It was an amusing post - but satire? Get yourself a dictionary mate. And, yes, "persecution complex" is the phrase that increasingly often springs to mind when I visit these parts. It's simply not true that everyone wants to see you fail in Europe (and I'd much prefer you to win the Premiership ahead of Taggart, Glazer and co), but if you keep going on about it they just might.

As for tonight's game - well, you've certainly made it hard for yourselves and there aren't many teams in the world capable of getting a result in the Nou Camp, but you are. Keep the faith. Probably not what you want to hear, but it'll be a cracker.

Ok - First of all you were beaten by a better football side, simple as that!!

Del Horno kicked Messi for the first 30 mins he was on the pitch and deserved his red for the high studs in the first place. Messi made Robbin look like a cunt!! - Del Horno rolled around more than Messi

Barca should have had 2 stone wall penalties

All in all a good couple of days for real football. Arsenal stuffing Madrid & Barca stuffing Chelski

How embarresed you all must be of your manager !!

Not as embarrassed of our manager as you should be of your spelling mate...

Barca played some good football, but only after they'd kicked Robben all over the pitch and got one of our players sent off. Hardly purist football.

And what's a stonewall penalty? Is it a penalty that's a bit gay?

I love reading this stuff, I am sure not everyone hates us. I think some people posting here should purchase a dictionary, and others a sense of humour. Why is it that Liverpool and Arsenal supporters really are so bitter and twisted in regards to our current success.

Surely supporters of teams with class, dignity, history and perma tanned wide boys - sorry skip the bit about wide boys - should rise above our temporary, undeserved, blip of criminally financed success and should ignore our Chavski scum/posh, rich scum (delete as appropriate) supporters and merely bide their time until the natural order of things is restored in the near future?

Unless of course there's something they aren't telling us?

Great to see the russians getting so riled, cos it shows its true. honestly, why shell out 70 pounds to see boringho? I could understand the barcelona game, as at least that way you get an idea of how football should be played.

I can admit we were crap against Benfica; that is what makes the difference. Most clubs know what they need to do to win, whereas chelsea think that because they have money they 'deserve it'.

For 500mil, you would expect to match barca in terms of performance. That is the main gripe.

If there are any chelsea fans who genuinely think that chelsea currently play better football than barcelona, or arsenal during their 49, lets hear your justification.

Only time Barca have ever beat us is when we're down a man. Baba, Drogba (never a card offense in a million years), and now Del Horno.

So when Chelsea are down a man "The Greatest Show on Earth" barely scrape a 2-1 win, and that with an own goal? Hardly strikes fear and when one considers the only time we've played at even strength have seen us ruthlessly crush them 3-1 and 4-2 respectively.

As for Carvalho's foul on Valdes last year, it was simply karmic justice for Frisk sending Drogba off in the first leg.

Again, for the thick ones - 11 v 11 we own them and they know it. Only remaining question is whether we'll be allowed to play with a full team - if so, Chelsea win going away.
