FA Cup: Chelsea 1 - 0 Queens Park Rangers

Sunday, 06 January 08, 10:17 PM · Comments (90)

Match reports

The Observer, Duncan Castles: "QPR, taken over in September by two Formula One money men and refinanced last month by an Indian billionaire, are on their way back to the top tier of English football. Their half-rebuilt team may still be one of Championship stalwarts and Premier League fringe players, their football not yet astute enough to undo even a weakened Chelsea and the club's uncertain manager, but they still managed to set a few home pulses racing."

Sunday Times, Brian Glanville: "Queens Park Rangers, with their regiment of newly-signed players, gave Chelsea a thorough run for their money in this London derby, going down to a single, freakish goal which came after 28 minutes. Chelsea’s Claudio Pizarro drove in a right-footed shot, Lee Camp, the QPR goalkeeper, seemed to misjudge it as he dived and had the mortification of deflecting the ball into his own net off his arm as it came back off the left-hand post."

Independent on Sunday, Glenn Moore: "With the spine of the team injured, and others rested, Avram Grant fielded a reserve-string central defence and occasional starters Steve Sidwell, Scott Sinclair and Claudio Pizarro. The latter was bizarrely withdrawn into midfield early on with the wingers pushed up to make4-3-3. More interesting than any name on the teamsheet was that of Didier Drogba among the substitutes. The Ivorian is just back from a knee operation and about to head for Ghana for the African Nations Cup."

Sunday Telegraph, Clive White: "So in the end all that separated the haves and the have-soons was an own goal. Rangers' new billionaire owners could be excused for thinking that success in this football business could come wonderfully cheaply, if the laboured efforts of their supposedly upper class West London neighbours was anything to go by here."

Official Chelsea FC Website: "The FA Cup holders have taken the first step on this season's road to Wembley with an undramatic victory - courtesy of a first-half own goal."

The goal

28' Camp (og) 1-0

The good

  1. We're in the hat on Monday. Ok so it was dull, dull, dull but at least we're in round 4. Compare that to other clubs, such as Everton and Blackburn, both of whom have publicly acclaimed, talented, rising star managers and only have cups to play for, we got through despite still being involved in all competitions and managed by The Ordinary One. I don't think the result was ever in doubt and even though we never really got going we weren't under threat. There were no "heart in the mouth" moments, unlike Leicester in the Carling Cup.
  2. Full crowd. After the Rosenborg debacle it was great to see the stadium full. Watching Match of the Day it was clear that at some stadiums entire stands were empty, aside from the ball boys and stewards. Who says we haven't got a fan base!
  3. Being good neighbours. QPR might have more financial clout than us, although it's unclear how deep the investors want to dig into their pockets, but in all other respects they're poorer than us. Lesser players, average ground and not much in the trophy cabinet aside from a League Cup win over the Arsenal, so we welcomed them to the Bridge, let them play a bit and allowed their fans to sing their silly songs without too much interruption. Provided they don't build an extension that blocks the light from our back garden we're happy to invite them round for tea and biscuits every now and again.
  4. Steve Sidwell's shot. I can't say I'm a big Sidwell fan but credit where it's due, it was a good move and his shot was a cracker and a great pity for him that it struck the post. We'll find out more about Steve over the next few weeks with the Africans away.
  5. Didier Drogba's return. Great to see Didier back on the pitch. He didn't do too much but at least he's on his way back. Only a shame that we're going to be used to get his fitness back so he can disappear to Africa for a few weeks.

The bad

  1. First half. Are we becoming a team that can only play in the second half? The first half was slow. The second half wasn't great but had a better tempo and gave us a bit more to shout about. Maybe Avram gave another half time rallying call by proxy?
  2. Claudio Pizarro. Poor old Claudio, his name was up in lights on the big screens only to be taken away at half time once the real scorer had been discovered. I've seen queerer goals in my time but that was definitely the most Camp. If all football was played at Claudio pace then TV companies wouldn't need to waste money on slow motion replays.
  3. Set pieces. How much does it cost to buy a toaster that makes toast, breakfast after breakfast? About £20 should do it. How much does it cost to buy a flat panel TV with HD that shows broadcast after broadcast? Amazingly only a few hundred quid. How much does it cost to buy a footballer that can take a corner just the once, let alone time after time? Well seemingly a £24,000,000 down payment followed by a 5 year commitment of £60,000 per week isn't quite enough! It truly is pathetic. Most of our players are guilty but, maybe unfairly, I'm going to focus on Shaun Wright-Phillips because in addition his crossing was woeful, including one that drifted into the upper tier of the Shed. I'm a great admirer of SWP's personal qualities. He gives 100%, chases lost causes, keeps balls in play that in normal circumstances would go out and, per inch, is probably the gutsiest and bravest player out there. However if a player can't perform the most fundamental task, which is to accurately strike a ball, I can't see how he can stay.

Man of the Match

Ashley Cole. Tricky choice since everyone was ordinary but I thought Ashley competed well and tried to get forward.

Final thoughts

We got through Christmas with a depleted squad and picked up a high number of points. With the African Nations Cup throwing another spanner in the works there's still every reason to be optimistic. Players will be returning from injury, although Malouda seems to be dragging his heals, and we might sign one or two new faces, so if we can keep the momentum going until our African boys return this season may still be surprisingly productive.

At last i can see that the players are assimilating AG ideas and methods.
Was reading the Independent on Sunday and AG comments were: "we did our job" ASpparently it is ok now to just do the job. Wasn't because of that AG replaced JM?
Unbelievable he had to bring in the big guns to be in hat tomorow.

Mark, I agree with you “… dull, dull, dull…”. The Stadium was full but the question is for how long, if this exciting performances are to stay. I wonder if AG has already given up his main goal (playing more exciting football), because he gives him self pleased with the results.

Marco....

I think you should put a lid on your 'anti-AG' lyrics...Ask Everton et al how much they would have given to get the chance of a replay....or ask the scousers what they would have sacrificed for a win against Luton-in-administration...

Re-route your energy my friend...there are better ways to burn it...

By the way, good piece Mark...

Nice one Mark, welcome on board.

I see the point that Marco is making - JM was apparently out of favour for not entertaining and then we get served up this banal rubbish - but apparently under AG that's OK.

Still we're in round 4 and for now that's good enough. I hear Mr Zahavi is in Spain trying to get a signature!

Just a shame that you cannot sing.

Personally i thought your "fans" were a disgrace to your club and history yesterday. No atmosphere at all, it was like a morgue in the chelsea ends.

Being serious guys, I hope with all of our money (QPR) we dont lose our soul like you have.

I feel genuinely sorry for proper Chelsea fans today (and i never thouht i'd say that)

All the best, may you regain your identity as yesterday is was Chelsea Football Club RIP

I really couldn't believe how poor your crowd was; and, I've never seen so many rich posh glory hunters.

I'd say that the majority of your fans yesterday had never trekked to an away game on a cold Tuesday night to watch your team in the 90s.

You've lost your soul, as a QPR fan I should be pleased but, really I'm not. It's said to see.

Scott, no offence mate, but we couldn't give a shit about QPR at the worst of times, when you used to finish above uss. I know it was your biggest game for a couple of years, but that wasn't even our biggest this week - we've a cup semi-final and a game against the real enemy, Spurs, still to come.

And, sorry to break it to you, but you lot weren't really all that impressive either - why is it all you lower league clubs sing exactly the same songs? Do they give you some sort of handbook? If originality is the measure of 'soul' (and it's as arbitery a one as 'volume'), you're buggered.

Still, good luck with the money. I've a feeling you'll be playing Fulham before you play us next, though.

Back to the real football.

Talking of the semi, anybody have any idea who is going to be available?

Listen mate, I didn't even know AG before he came to chelsea, and it was his remarks after every game that made me anti-AG. I hate hipocrisy and the guy should be grateful fro the players he has, because they are all JM players, and can't help to see very little motivation or wiill to win, or for that matter, players playing fore the manager.
I am sorry with the players he has inherited any manager would do better, is not anti-AG rhetoric at all, it is a fact that players are not motivated enough even the ones that start the games and have an opportunity to impress, they don't.
As I said before the man has no talent, ok not everybody is the same, that why there are better and worst. I do not need to put a lid on my antagonism with AG, I only started analysing AG when I kept hearing his comparisons. regarding my energy i always direct it to CFC since the 80's even before rainiere, g vialla etc . alex, believe me this guy is only at that position through firendship not for achievements, even when he was recruited to Portsmouth harry was not impressed, and I bet when he went to CFC he must have had a drink or 2. Alex open your eyes. He is a fake he is there only because he is a jew thats all.
There is a good article i read in another blog I think it is written by Martin Samuel , not sure if Guardian or Times, where he writes about AG you guys read it.
Anyway gonna read other blogs about our positive, attacking match against QPR.
BTW alex you not AG in disguise are you? lol

Scott, It is inevitable that, if QPR do make it to the heights of the Premiership on the back of their rich owners millions, a certain number of fans on match days will be there because it is the place to be seen. Just look at a Formula 1 pit lane or starting grid on race days to see just how awful a place certain areas of Loftus Road might be in the future. QPR will not lose its 'soul' as you like to call it, it will just have lots of new fans drawn to the fact that they are now rich and likely to be more successful because of this.

But this bullshit about clubs losing their 'soul' annoys me, because it is not true and it is media driven. Chelsea has not lost its 'soul', no club loses its soul just because it has become successful and rich. The fans that were there in the 70's, 80's and 90's are still supporting the Blues now, and most probably still go to as many matches. What percentage of any big, successful Premier League clubs' home match fans went to an away game on a cold Tuesday night in the 90's? I would guess it is a small percentage. But those that did are still there and still going to away matches.

Atmospheres in grounds have been ruined by all seater stadiums and Nazi stewards and yesterday the football on offer did not help at all.

Using quotes around the word fans and words like 'disgrace' and 'proper' just mark you out as another tabloid reading dick who can't think for himself.

Rant over.

Thank you Mark for the report.

In addition, there was mention of a swap deal for Drenthe and Malouda. Do it, I say. We couldn't do any worse.

Things are looking pretty bleak on the returning players front - I believe only Carvalho is back tomorrow.

Make him captain, not Ashley. Please.

Lord knows what Scott would think if I pointed out that the home fans were actually a bit noisier on Saturday than we sometimes are ...

We seemed to be playing the game at about 30% of our normal speed, so no wonder the crowd lost interest a bit. Once the goal went in there was no doubt about the result. QPR were rubbish, apart from the no. 10 who looks like he knows what to do with the football.

Nice report Mark -- if that's your first one, well done for keeping up the very high standards.

To the bad I have to add Sidwell.

I don't usually rant, but he was absudly awful. Until Ballack came on it was like there was a big black hole in the centre of the team. You could actually very clearly see the ball going around this hole, either back and forth along the back four, or up the sides of the pitch around it. Sidwell perpetually turns to face his own defence and then hops around looking busy but *never*, *ever* getting anywhere where the ball can be passed to him. Most of the time he was pointing elsewhere -- "don't pass to me, pass over there!". And when the back four or Obi did slip him the ball he didn't even try to look up and turn around, he just pinged it straight back. He obviously has no confidence at all that he can put his foot on the ball, turn around, keep possession and find someone further up the pitch with a pass. I don't think the rest of the team has any confidence in him either -- Ben Haim for example kept trying to miss him out by slipping longer passes up the left channel (I lost count of how many of these went straight to the opposition after 5).

The difference when Ballack came on was amazing.

We need Maka fit so he can play the Obi role, with Ballack/Frank as playmaker. If we have to depend on Sidwell, I swear we'll struggle to beat Birmingham and Reading.

Anyone else getting a bit fed up of this? He's a great player but honestly shouldn't we be looking to cash in on him now if this really is a transition season? And just for once, couldn't he keep his trap shut?

Is it also true that Ashley Cole was asked to hand the captaincy to Drogba when he came on? If so, then this is bloody disgraceful and a dreadful example of man management. If it is true...then doesn't it seem like we're pandering to Drogba's whims a little too much?

100% correct. It is a pity that we got him (Sidwell) free to cover for when the African players go for the CAF...but hey can't we also give him away as well????

He surely does not deserve to wear a Chelsea shirt, with players like Gullit, Zola, Petit, Deschamps, Di Matteo, Makelele, Wisey, Lamps, Ballack, etc having worn this shirt and then you mention Sidwell... Free offer please free offer...

This is my assertion of the player:
100% heart
1% skill

We can not wait for the 1% surely to move to 2% may take a decade or never..I say out with him!

Job done - can't really ask for too much more of the 3rd round; sure that Blackburn, Everton and co. would have all happily taken a scrappy 1-0 win.

Picked this up on the Guardian website; despite the dubious source, I double checked a couple of times and apparently it isn't a joke. I'll drive him there if need be...

>> The Sun, meanwhile, has turned its attention to Tottenham, who are intent on plugging the holes in their own colander-like defence by signing the Chelsea centre-back Tal Ben Haim this month. Spurs have shipped eight goals in three games and manager Juande Ramos is apparently willing to shell out up to £8m on Ben Haim, who has failed to impress Avram Grant.

And finally, can I be the first to suggest that I'm not too sure whether David Villa isn't a tiny bit lightweight and not really suited to the PL?

JD,

In my unofficial role as chairman and founding member of the 'Sign David Villa now at any cost' campaign, I'm happy to confirm he may well be a little light-weight for the Premier.

However, if you add this to the slightly heavy-weight phsyique of Pizarro, it all cancels itself out.

According to the Observer, Pizarro's training ground nickname is 'Lee Trundle' due to his slightly porky frame.

If only he was as good.......

Fifty - I'm not surprised Pizarro is carrying a few extra pounds; I spend a fair bit of time in Munich with work and it is nigh-on impossible to eat there without meat or beer appearing in front of you at some point (and that includes breakfast). Pizarro was there for years so we're probably lucky he doesn't look like the bastard lovechild of Brolin and Le Tissier... :-)

Villa is at least the right side of 30 which is a plus. And if we did get I'd guess it probably means a departure from 4-3-3.

And re all the Drogba / Cole captaincy business; why was Cole given the armband in the first place - I'm struggling to think of too many less suitable for the role.

Seriously we are playing a new style and that takes time, we had losts of unrest and to un do it and remove the trouble makers takes time and there is going to be an impact on the pitch - we arent dealing with the brightest people here!! I work with FTSE 100 firms to go through change and it takes between 6 - 12 months depending on the people around you so you have to give AG that time, no less.

Yes he is hypocritical Marco but if you were in his shoes would you not say whatever was required to get through it!! The fans judge him, other fans ridicule him, some players want to leave because of him and the press berate him so..... does he crumble or just muddle through until he can buy his players - van der vaart, anelka, modric etc and then he can play his way - since he took over has there been a transfer window?!?!? no so he has to play it cleaverly and that means the JM way until he can buy.

Ooh, using an iPhone to make a comment!

The fact is, even RA isn't stupid enough to sign a manager who is carp. Of xure he isn't the best choice, but look at the results he's had from a team with the spine(terry, carvalho, essien, maka, lamps, cech, drogba and sheva) out, and now obi and kalou. This means our 10 points over Xmas is the mark of excellence. And this IS entertainment- may I remind al of an unluky 4-4 draw with villa WITHOUT our spine? And may I also remind u of cech's 2 out-of-the-ordinary errors which are the only things that have cost us points in our last 5 games- what more proof of a good manager do you want??? 90% of you lot remind me of stoke fans, who booed their manager tony culis even as his team had 55% of possession and better chances than their premiership adversaries, Newcastle.

Finally let me reiterate the facts: Chelsea are in third place in the premiership, 5 points from an arsenal side who have been nearly full strength all season, and with a vastly poorer squad.! Bad manager- I think not!

Let's agree that the "unlucky" 4-4 draw is cancelled out by the hilariously fortunate win over mighty Newcastle...

Beating Blackburn away was a fairly good result (although look, even Coventry can do it). The others are nothing to shout about.

Last weekend made it clearer than ever that the team's doing just what it used to do. No one can see any difference yet. Of course, that is to Grant's credit, as we were a much better team than all the rubbish about "boring", "pragmatic" Chelsea allows for, and it hasn't all fallen apart. By the same token, one has to say that there's no evidence as yet of WonderGrant and His Amazing New "Not Like It Was Before" style.

After Mad Rafa won the Euro Cup, presumably all the Scousers thought he was the best thing ever. Odd results can be misleading. Let's see how things look at the end of the season.

Looks like our signings will be:
Branislav Ivanovic £8.9m (confirmed)
Giovani Dos Santos £10m
David Villa £25m at least
Anelka £10 even though they rejected a bid im sure he will be in a blue shirt come the end of january!

Always Blue!

that Barca will not sell Giovani.
But I would prefer Giovani dos santos to david Villa though David Villa is an impressive goal scorer, but extremelly undisciplened, and wouldnt be surprise if he will clash with AV

Why not???? DD is not happy he has always been taught/instructed by top managers at their level, he realises that AV got where he is not by merit not by faith, so it is his right to choose, wetjer he leaves or stays, what i doubt, it is his right, but it is not on;ly him you wait and watch summer.
Evberyone is having a go at malouda, and others but DD took 1 1/2 season to show himself, and malouda and others are as good, some take longer to adapt, not everyone is like JM that took him a few weeks to gel the players for a double championship, unlike this sly geezer that wishes to take some crtedit from the work done b4 by JM

Adopting your tone for a moment-
What a sad bitter and twisted person you must be. Your only writing here because you are either an Arsenal fan or a fan of the BNP or because you have no girlfriend By the way as you seem to hate hipocrisy and actual facts. You seem to think Avram Grant the guy should be grateful fro the players he has, because they are all JM players. Did JM buy Lampard, Cech, Bridge, Cudicini, or Terry. And he certainly did not buy Robben, Eider, or Duff.

You have your opinion about Avram Grant. I have my opinion about you.

One more thing for Marco.

You seem to rely on Martin Samuel from the Times as a good source. Let ir be known that Martin Samuel is a West Ham fan and has a a real pikey hatred of Chelsea. It seems as no surprse why you like him then Marco.

Considering the injury list we have and the absentees for the African Nations cup , Chelsea are hanging in there as well as can be expected. But I'm sure Marco will disagree.

Unfortunately we don't have room to negotiate for Anelka. Our need is this week. Every day that passes our need gets less up until the point of Drogba's return (assuming he doesn't hate us so much that he might stay in Africa) so we must take it up the tail pipe and pay whatever Bolton ask.

@Marco

You say the Drogba wants to leave because he wants to be managed by a coach appointed on merit rather than faith.

According to Drogba he never wanted to arrive, wanted to leave from day 1 and the departure of JM only served to increase his desire leave. Drogba is obviously a complex personality but I don't think he is motivated by anti-Semitism.

The problem with trying to buy Anelka, aside from the fact we'll be held to ransom, is his age.

Fair enough 28 is by no means old, but we'll no doubt chuck a lucrative 5 year deal at him, undoubtedly £60k a week and upwards.

He's only a year younger than Sheva when we signed him. I still think we should be looking longer term, somone who's going to give us 5 or so years at their very best. Yes I keep going on about David Villa, but there are alternatives such as Huntelaar.

It's all well and good having to buy replacements now due to our lenghty injury list and ACN representatives, but who's to say we wont get another injury crisis next year and resort to the same thing.

I think I'd rather "write off" this season than see us pay way over the odds for a short-term fix which might not help us much in two or three seasons.

Mark, I'm sure you're right that we have big problems *now*: but Anelka's not going to win us the league or the Euro Cup. The question is whether we can hang on in the top four without throwing money at a medium-name striker. I think we can, so I'd be happy to "write off" this season in the sense of accepting a top-four finish and some decent Cup runs, and concentrate on rebuilding the team with an eye to the longer term.

I yield to no one in my visceral loathing of Man U, but, much as I would like to see the ground beneath Old Trafford open up and swallow the whole lot of them, their puce-faced bully of a manager and their glory-hunting "fans", I don't think there's any chance of us catching them in the league this year. To my mind that makes Anelka not worth being held to ransom for.

But do we need to make a choice? It's not like we're short of funds, it just depends on RA's inclination. We could fix the short term issue with an Anelka type plus in parallel buy some young guns and also in parallel build the ultimate academy (as we are doing).

Mark,

I don't want us to actively throw in the towel as it were, I just dont see any benefit in spending what will be, undoubtedly, over the odds for a short term fix till the end of this season. Yeah he'll be eligible for the Champs League, but DD will be back from the ACN by then. We'll have 4 (I'll use the term loosely !!) strikers.

It makes a mockery of Kenyon and Buck harping on about making a profit by year X when we're going out to buy a player, in effect, for 6 weeks.

The club is looking at Anelka as he's the most viable, and attainable, option in the short term, but if we still had these injuries but no ACN, he wouldn't be the first choice. I can't believe with the supposed spending that RA has promised that 'Le Sulk' is the number one priority. I could be mistaken, but that's my opinion.

In reality, we've hardly set the league on fire when everyone's been fit, so signing Anelka wont make much difference. Yes, I'd rather we had him than Pizarro (and maybe Sheva) but can you honestly see him being happy as soon as DD returns and is reinstalled as first-choice (and he will be first choice)?? It's tempting to stick with what we've got this year, pick up a cup or two, and do some proper rebuilding in the summer, no doubt to replace DD.

I think we're still in the title race - just. We're hanging on, but the injuries and missing players mean we'll need a hell of a lot more than Anelka to make any difference over the next 6 weeks.

It's an interesting conundrum - do we get held to ransom (again) looking for a short-term fix that will only delay the inevitable; or do we make a stand, fuck Anelka and fuck Bolton and instead work out some really good long-term deals in the summer?

Last season we were faced with a similar problem and ended up doing in the summer what we should have done in January (ie, bought short-term fixes). That was crap judgment. This time, with no feuding between the three hundred layers of management, we need to be able to get it right for the club's long-term interests.

Personally, I'm with Limetree. I like Anelka but really don't see the point in spunking £15m on a short-term solution when we are trying to rectify the damage done by the totally inept transfer policy (spend wildly for three seasons then sell all our best players and sign freebies) of the past four seasons. If we can get him for £12m or thereabouts, do it; otherwise, don't bother.

Fair enough but if we adopt the policy of not spending and we end up winning nothing will everyone be calling for Avram's head?

Maybe RA needs to spend for political reasons to give Avram some chance?

I dont think the majority of Chelsea fans are naive enough to think Grant should be sacked if we dont win anything by not spending. The injuries and ACN have and will take their toll on our season, anyone can see that.

If the right players become available then fine, let's buy them. However, I don't feel Anelka's the right player at the sort of money Bolton want.

Anelka isnt a short term replacement - he has always been a top top striker - Wenger dreamed of him and henry up top - it was his attitude that let him down, and his brothers greed - have you never done or acted in a way and then grown up and realised the error - he is only 28. If he can score 15+ for man city under pearce and the same for bolton then blimey he can be a 20+ man for us. Say what you want about the man - hate his bear, his attitude or even that he is french but dont doubt his credentials - if you can keep him how Bolton have then you have someone lethal in front of goal and someone who always haunts arsenal!!

I'm with Munkeyfeet on this - I have a bad feeling that Anelka is the long-term replacement for Drogba (who will finally get his way in the summer and be allowed to leave for the right price).

While Anelka's temperament over the years has been questionable, what's not questioned is his ability to score goals in the Premier League. He's no Drogba, but he is a proven goal scorer - he scored 46 goals in 103 games for City when they were crap.

I don't believe we should be held to ransom by Bolton though; why is he suddenly worth twice what they paid for him? He's not, but that won't stop us eventually paying what they want.

As long as we don't sign Defoe for stupid money, who's been told by Ramos that he can leave Spurs.

I don't think Anelka is a long term replacement for DD, but the first step in Villa/Anelka partnership with Sheva playing a Sparky Hughes role as even RA realises Sheva's pace is gone for good. That's my hope. I agree we need to build for the future but at 28 and 26 the Anelka/Villa pertnership would be good for 5-6 years....plenty of time for some academy gold to rise to the top. I love DD but if he wants to go, then like Billy we should shake hand and guide him through the door.

In my view the signing of Anelka will require a shift in our footballing pattern. He is not a straight, like for like replacement for DD.
I don't have the facts to hand but he does not score many goals with his head, in fact I'm sure he never scored for Arsenal with a header.
So if he joins, AG or a least one of his delegated Generals will have to rejig our midfield strategy to bring the best of Anelka out.

With that in mnd, I'm particularly interested to see how Ballack carries on developing in his frank-less midfield role, starting tonight as we need what big players we have left, to step up to the plate.

@ All those who have signed off this season.

Some of us still believe that we can come out with something this season and would have last season had JM been given the money he sought but was denied...

Anelka is the best buy we can do for this season next and the one after...28, 29, 30...He is playing in the premiership so no adjustment to the pace of the game required like with Shevy and the physique is just right still got pace and scored more than our top scores this season...Played in the Champs league (actually won it) won the premiership, playing for the French National side...QUite an impressive CV if you ask me...

Anelka at 15 mill is a great buy we can alwasy buy any longer term prosepects later...just to imagine we paid 21 for SWP (not putting inflation and time value of money in this and that was a bit...would he be priced at the same today????) Let us buy Anelka win the league, Champs league, Carling, FA...now that would be a story...

I am keeping my fingers crossed...

Villa and Anelka would be a great combination - before he messed his head up i wanted anelka and adriano with van der vaart playing just off - now that would have been great.

I too hope Ballack keeps the form up - i like him and he is showing signs of the greatness he had at bayern.

Anelka isnt a DD replacement - i dont believe AG wants to play that focal point tupe of game - barca dont need a big one up front and AG doenst want to - a villa, torres type would be great as they can head and also beat a man with their tricky skills.

Still doubt we could bring Anelka in, as well as him being the expected striker to "fill DD up". Does he cost £15M seriously? He is one of those who play good football according to his temper and mood. I doubt he can be loyal to the Blues.

I bet Berbatov's was just air. I don't think he'd come, even RA would buy him over £35m, as he is aiming for clubs at ManUtd.

Anelka is a bit too temperamental for my liking, but then again he break the straight foward approach. he has a trick or two and he is genuinely hungry for goals. he is that typs of player who, despite his immense talent, has always not been favoured by the conditions to really assert himself in the world stage. he might want to do that and prove a thing or two at Chelsea.

I take back all my criticism of AG. The man is a tactical genius! Playing with ten men and hoping to nick a goal, he puts "Big Man In The Box" SWP at centre-forward. SWP gives the puny Joleon Lescott no chance with a classical towering header!

Ok, but to be truly fair -- that was a good performance, and a very enjoyable game. Some really nice ball movement all through the team. If anyone other than Pizzarro had been on the end of a few of the passing sequences -- Drogs, Sheva, Anelka, whoever -- that would have been an easier win. Sidwell also is still useless. But some big players had fab games -- Riccy (unbelievable, what a disaster it will be if he leaves in the summer, unless the Serbian kid turns out to be a superstar), Ballack, Belletti, Bridge.
