FA Cup review: Chelsea 3 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur

Monday, 12 March 07, 12:39 AM · Comments (49)

Match reports

Daily Telegraph, Henry Winter: "Jose Mourinho once accused Spurs of parking the "team bus'' across the goalmouth at Stamford Bridge, but yesterday they performed like a stylish limo, driving all over Chelsea before running out of gas following Thursday's trip to Braga. In a high-octane FA Cup quarter-final, Spurs' counter-attacking was terrific. So was Chelsea's resilience, if not their organisation."

The Guardian, Kevin McCarra: "A glorious race against time ended in a dead heat. Tottenham had been in action late on Thursday night to beat Braga in Portugal and could not overwhelm Chelsea before the energy levels began to drain from them in the FA Cup quarter-final. For their part the Stamford Bridge side, lagging 3-1, willed their way back for a draw, yet failed to add the very late winner that would have been so typical of them."

The Independent, Sam Wallace: "Neither of these teams has any room to spare in a fixture calendar choked by European football but that did not mean that either wanted out of the FA Cup. As Jose Mourinho ushered his team forward in pursuit of an equaliser, he was only heaping more fixture pain on to his club. But what the hell, he has never won the FA Cup and if he leaves this summer he never might. Martin Jol's team played in the Premiership's game of the season last week at West Ham and this time it was Spurs who could not stand in the way of an irresistible comeback."

The Times, Matt Dickinson: "Leaping around on the touchline, [Jose Mourinho] could not have been more involved if he had taken to the pitch to volley the 87th-minute equaliser. He has never lacked a will to win, but threatening to dismiss him has simply poured paraffin on to his raging competitive fires."

Official Chelsea FC Website: "Asking for a winner in the dying seconds after all that had gone before was perhaps a little greedy. Instead these two teams will have to do it all again on Monday March 19 at White Hart Lane. If that is half as pulsating as this game at Stamford Bridge, anyone present will be in for a night to remember."

The goals

The good

  1. The result. At half time we looked dead and buried and out of the FA Cup. If you’d offered me the draw I’d have snatched your hand off. As it is we got out of jail big time - Jermain Defoe’s crashing shot against the bar in injury time could have sealed it with some style for Spurs - and surely Jose Mourinho will not allow this type of performance again. John Terry’s return should help the defence.
  2. The performance. Well the second half one at least. Do champions truly only turn up for half the game? We seem to do this week in and week out. To be brutally honest at half time I was wondering how I would explain to Nick that I‘d written the first ever review that had nothing in "The good" section, and I’m certainly not putting Spurs in there, even if they were good. Which they were.
  3. Frank Lampard. I’m happy to dish out the brickbats when Frank doesn’t play well. Maybe, like most I’m too demanding. So, Frank gets a bouquet today because his goals saved our collective arse. Right time, right place would be the correct phrase, but his passing was good, his tackling was good and his passion was obvious. Top marks.
  4. The crowd. I was a distant viewer, watching for the first time with my fellow Chelsea supporting nephew Callum and his Leeds supporting dad (yep, my brother, a Leeds fan, what a let down!) but the atmosphere bled through the screen and even when we were being ripped apart the Chelsea crowd didn’t stop singing.
  5. The Big Man — Didier Drogba. Yep, yet another worthy mention for the man who will be our Player of the Season. Took a knock in the first half and while we collectively held our breath as he hobbled for 5 minutes, he then sprang back to life and completed the game. Didn’t score but was involved in everything good we did and played a fantastic assist to Salomon Kalou for the equaliser.

The bad

  1. The referee. As good as Mark Halsey was last week, Mike Riley was equally bad. Unnecessary bookings and flagrant disregard for blatant fouls on our players, plus allowing the hateful Spurs to time waste. Go now Riley, go now.
  2. Courtesy of my nephew Callum, Michael Essien's own goal gets an entry in here. He scored a comedy own goal against Reading and this was even worse. Utterly avoidable in every sense. He’s been great but perhaps it was always going to show his defensive frailties against lightning quick players like Defoe and Aaron Lennon. A great player, but have a rest Mike and get back into the middle of the park.
  3. The defending. In the first half it was shockingly bad and although the second half saw an improvement it still wasn’t great. A better team than Spurs may have capitalised on it. The defending for Spurs' third goal was as bad as anything you’d see on a Sunday morning down the local park. JT can’t come back a moment too soon.
  4. Spurs. Time wasting, niggly fouls and they had the temerity to score three goals at our fortress. I’m almost glad they beat us earlier in the season as it’s rekindled my loathing of them. I quite like Martin Jol though, who is truly closer to being a living version of Shrek than Wayne Rooney.
  5. The result. Yes I do realise this is in "The good" section as well but that is merely a fall back position. The reality is we could well do without a replay two days after our game against Sheffield United. So, although considering how the game was heading I am happy with the draw, but I’m also very unhappy that we didn’t win and secure our place in the semis at the first time of asking.

Player ratings

  • Petr Cech: Superb. And couldn’t do anything about the goals - 8/10
  • Lassana Diarra: Another solid showing but looks better at right back - 7/10
  • Ricardo Carvalho: A little off today from the normal high standard - 7/10
  • Michael Essien: Shocking comedy own goal, but he didn’t let it faze him - 7/10
  • Ashley Cole: A better game than against Pompey but better than Bridge? No! - 6/10
  • Paulo Ferreira: A shadow of the player we once had. Will go this summer, surely? - 4/10
  • Frank Lampard: Wonder performance today, well taken goals - 9/10
  • Michael Ballack: Mostly anonymous again - 5/10
  • Arjen Robben: A pain in Spurs' side but must stop the diving - 7/10
  • Andriy Shevchenko: Good overall contribution - 7/10
  • Didier Drogba: Absolutely magnificent today despite not scoring. Fabulous head down for the equaliser - 9/10
  • Salomon Kalou (sub): Great finish and looked sharp - improving - 7/10
  • Shaun Wright-Phillips (sub): Didn’t shine, nor did he flop. Decidedly average - 6/10
  • Khalid Boulahrouz (sub): Shored us up nicely when we had started to look like Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle at the back - 7/10

Man of the Match

Midway through he first half I thought perhaps no-one would be worthy of this. Essien who has been superb all season probably had one of the least effective games in the first half, and for once Drogba didn’t score. However, a second calmer viewing of the game thanks to my spanking new Virgin V+ box shows quite clearly that the lynchpin of the team was Super Frankie Lampard who was frankly inspired. So my vote for Man of the Match goes to Frank.

Final thoughts

This was not a good game for anyone with blood pressure issues. Like me, for instance. My doctor calls it “white coat hypertension” whereby the very act of having blood pressure taken causes the pressure to go off the scale. Well, he’s wrong. It's called “blue shirt hypertension” and is caused by a team that seem hell bent on doing everything the hard way. I make no apologies for saying again that we got out of jail big time and most of the pain came from a totally abject first half display and piss-poor, clueless defending the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the dark days of Doug Rougvie. Truly the worst I have seen since The Special One parked his bus at Stamford Bridge. We have a chance to repair the potential damage this could have caused and we should have a psychological advantage over Spurs having pulled this game back. They’ll know they missed a big chance and I think it’ll work to our advantage, as we’ve looked solid out on the road. Someone will beat us at home one day, but it won’t be the men from White Hart Lane.

Update

Blackburn Rovers await the winner of the replay in the semi-finals. Lunchtime's draw grouped Watford versus Manchester United or Middlesbrough in the other tie.

The semi-finals will be played on the weekend of Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th April.

Paulo Ferreira was bloody awful and was rightly substituted. Jose didn't learn his lesson - Ferreira was crap at the Lane last November too.

Got to disagree with your Ballack rating, Tony - I thought he was pretty good today. A damn site better than Wright-Phillips, who is utter rubbish in comparison to Lennon. Surely SWP and Ferreira will be sold this summer.

BRIDGE; thought it was KB who replaced Diarra and not Bridge.

And Ballack was way way better than SWP who is simply a utter waste in that Chelsea Shirt.

Yes Tony have to agree with Nick, I was a lot closer to the action today not in my usual Shed Upper area but just behind the Rottenham dugout. But Ballack did have a reasonable game and did make more effort to get at the ball, and show a little more urgency.

As far as SWP goes this guy should leave, he's not good enough to wear a blue shirt (well I suppose the light blue of city is fine) The ammount of times he gave the ball away cheaply was disgraceful, hurry back Joe Cole please.

And a final comment, what a save Cech made early in the second half when Essien was attempting to clear another goal bound attempt, how we've missed him.

I was giving SWP the benefit of the doubt by calling him average. But you're right he really doesn't get close to Lennon in terms of speed, skill and effort.

For me Ballack was better than against Pompey but still not the player who led his nation in 2006. I have no doubt he will improve the more he plays and adjusts to the rather more frenetic pace of the EPL.

Ferreira has gone very wrong and its sad to see someone fall into such decline from the heights he achieved previously, especially his first season. For me he will go, along with SWP and Makalele.

Think you were a bit kind to Cole, Diarra, Essien and Carvalho, Tony. That third goal reminded me of the Ian Porterfield days...

Didn't think SWP was too bad. He gave them something to think about. And ALL our subsititutes were better than Mido and Gardner, who pretty much cost Spurs the game.

Been saying it for a while, but Kalou is a great player to bring off the bench.

But 3-1 down at half time with Essien and Drogba limping - who would have thought it. And how many other managers would have played 30 mins with only two defenders on the pitch? It was extraordinary.

I should add as well with regard our defending which was pretty poor by our high standards. I can't see us being as bad in the replay, we've contained and shut out better attacking players, and teams than Spurs.

We know they've scored a lot of goals recently, but we also know they can't defend, after all West Ham banged in three against them. I think they had their chance on Sunday and have possibly blown it. If they do beat us in the replay, it'll could well be the lottery of dreaded penalties.

Anyway onwards to Wednesday and the small matter of City, who surely don't want their neighbours winning another title ;)

At half time, I was actually planning my entry to todays blog. But it all changed by the end. We were so ordinary in the first half, and the defending for Ghaly's goal was nothing short of comical. Even JT with double vision would have been better than the shower we had at the back yesterday. I really felt for Petr Cech, who had a good game (as always) and was let down by the circus clowns in front of him.

Sheva seemed to get better as the game wore on, and we looked pretty dangerous going forward (save for SWP, surely a gonna ???). Kalou took his goal well and caused the Spuds problems with his direct running.

Shame a replay is needed, but there's no denying its better than not being in the cup at all. ManUSA will get Watford in the draw later, mark my words.

Read yesterday that Miguel from Valencia who now plays RB for Portugal is a target in the summer.

Anyone other than Ferreira please. He can't pass; tackle; cross and has no pace. Actually Jose, let me have a go, I play RB for my Saturday team...............

I agree with both of you about SWP.. He gave nothing, truely nothing to the second half comeback. When he could give us a good cross to the spurs box, where we had Drogs, Shev, Kalou he went to dribbling, often loosing the ball and our 3-man defence had problems with quick spurs attack. Seriously, here in Poland, in front of tele, watching the game, i was so furious when Ballack or someone else gave him a ball.. Shame on you Shaun! Never wear the Blues shirt again!
I don't remember any good performence from Ferreira this season. Both should be sold this summer, i think TSO will find someone MUCH MUCH better that those two.

Ballack's influence was absent from this game. SWP should have been sold before this season and only god knows what's happened to ferrera.

A good finish from Kalou but i feel he has at least another season before he's firing at will.

I put money down that we wouldn't loose at half time. Even if we were down to nine men and had injurred players CHELSEA and god) still wouldn't let the yid win at the Bridge.

There was a really good atmosphere in the pubs and bars in Fulham, all the blue fans were well trollied.....

I would take issue with a couple of your player ratings.

SWP would get no better than 2 for me. 1 for turning up and 1 for being properly dressed. I will be amazed if we see hime in a blue shirt again. He looked woefully out of his depth.

Ballack - I thought he had a good game one or 2 poor passes aside.

I would have ashely cole at no better than 3 or 4. Here was dominated by Berbatov and will have nightmares about meeting him again - Bridge has to take hi place in the replay.

The problems IMHO were caused by Diara - and the gap between him and the central midfield allowing lennon way too much space. One or other of Lampard or Ballack should have dropped back in support - neither did and the results were there for all to see.

Jose admits Real dream

I'm not very good at interpreting hints, but what the hell?! Since when does our manager say it'd be an honour to manage some other club? This sucks, I don't want Capello managing Chelsea. His coaching methods are as old as The Roman Empire.

That's what the blog's about. Glad you disagree with me, but they're not changing! SWP was average in my view and no better, and Ballack was OK but not the influence I expect.

Gleb

Calm down, all Jose was saying is that one day he might like to manage Real Madrid, but not until his contract with Chelsea runs out in 2010. Nothing wrong with that because we all know that come 2010 there's a good chance he'll go anyway - it's the nature of the man. If RA wants him out the he could go in the summer, so don't worry.

Capello will only get near Chelsea if we play RM in a friendly or he fancies taking Mrs Capello for a drink in the SO bar.

Sounds like it was a colourful old occasion; I was sitting in the departure lounge of Schipol Airport (Amsterdam) with a sledgehammer hangover as we were disintegrating in the first half. Not pleasant.

When it got to 3-1 I seriously considered a flight somewhere other than London! Top recovery though - be a tough game up there next week.

General view among the bunch I was with at the game was Ballack did well. Frank is like another striker, sometimes doesn't seem to do much but pops up with a couple of goals, can't argue with that. Was much better in the 2nd half when all team was properly geed up.

Kalou should have been on instead of SWP IMHO, his confidence is shot, which is sad to watch.

Cole was poor but didn't have much in front of him. Think, as well as the slagging Ballack thing, we may be being a bit premature about writing off Maka. Think he would have done a better job yesterday than Diarra, who has been brilliant but looked callow trying to cope with Lennon.

Boula was great when he came on, which was pretty useful when we went two at the back.

And, saddens me to say it, but that Berbatov looks a class act.

Beyond all that, though, what a top, top, game on a beautiful spring day. We may be a bit rubbish this season, but I'm loving it. When our third went in everyone went bananas. Ended up three rows away from seat, hugging big fat hoolies, kissing babies. etc, etc.

What it's all about, shirley.

Agreed Tony, We are all entitled to our opinions.

I think that watching on telly, it would have been impossible to really comprehend just how shambolic we were in the first half. It recalled the fateful CL performance against Besiktas when Ranieri decieded to play with a back 3. But even that performance looked competant by comparrison.

we got out of jail, fair play, but tactically lessons can and need to be learned. JTs return will paper over most of the cracks but we need to address the situation at right back and with a referee like Riley who clearly thinks its OK to let Ashley cole be shoved over, backed into and be trod on bu the opposing center forward. Maybe Bridge at Right back is the way forward.

Though given Ferriera's first half an hour, Brdige certainly couldn't do a worse job at Right back were he given the chance.

ONe more point on SWP and Ballack. There was a very telling moment shortly before we got our second goal and frustration was boiling over. Ballack recieved the ball on the center circle and spotted SWP 10 yards behind where he should have been. He looked up picked his spot and passed the ball into touch (IMO) deliberately - where SWP should have been. I'm sure he was making a point. I sit right above where the incident happened and, as much as you can be certain of naything in the heat of the game, I'm sure it was a calculated act.

Peter H,

I think you're onto something with Bridge at RB. Certainly couldn't be any worse than Ferreira / Geremi, and Jose has said that Johnson's definitely coming back - maybe Bridge can make it his own - he's the best of those 4 by the proverbial country mile !!!!

And I'd love to believe your conspiracy theory about Ballack, but personally I cant believe he'd be that accurate..........

Actually I remember the incident vividly and my thought at the the time was pretty scathing of Ballack, however bad passing isn't really a feature of his game, backwards and unambitious passing yes, but inaccurate no. So, I like conspiracy theories and this one intrigues me because SWP looks like the proverbial fish out of water at the moment.

By the way did anyone see what Jose said today about 75-80% of the squad being in place for next year? That's about 6 players on the way out and 6 in. So, fuelling the fire. here goes

Out:

SWP
Makalele
Ferreira
Geremi
Carlo
Shevchenko (not because I want him to go, but because I think we'll get a...ahem...loan offer we can't refuse)

In:

David Villa
Alex
Micah Richards
Aaron Lennon
Scott Sinclair (back from loan)
Glen Johnson (back from loan)

Tony,

I like the thinking. If I may offer my thoughts on the 'outs' first :

I agree with your first 4. I'm not sure about Carlo. We dont have a recognised replacement for Cech without Cudicini - Hilario is an able number 3 but hardly much more. Not sure about the youngsters at the club in goal, but I reckon he'll stay.
Regarding Shevchenko, it's definitely feasible he'll return to Italy, but I dont think it'll happen. Think we may be stuck with him which may impose on our ability to bring in other forwards.

'In' wise, the loan returners are coming regardless. Alex is probably the most likely due to whatever the circumstances between us, him and PSV are. Richards is a possibility but a) we'll get stung money-wise and b) look at the last Man City superstar we bought (not that they're identical, but lets be careful).

I dont think Lennon would want to join, mainly because he'll look at SWP's lack of playing time and wonder if it's worth losing your international career over (lets face it, we're playing the same midfield system next year).

Lastly, David Villa. Probably the most unlikely in my opinion. If Sheva's gone then why not, but with him and Drogba here, Villa will hardly want to be a bit part player. Besides, he'll probably go to El Anfieldo with the rest of the Spaniards.

Based on previous seasons, we'll sign someone from PSV who has been banging the goals in in Holland, but cant hit the proverbial barn door over here.

We'll no doubt buy someone else from Porto, or someone with a Porto connection so Jose still feels a bit at home.

And possibly one or two more 30-plus former legends who need to top up their retirement funds.

Or am I being a little cynical......................

Playing 6 in, 6 out is a fun game. Particularly if you allow yourself some fantasy purchases (and sales ?), and be willing to risk some abuse. Here's mine :

Out :
Wright-Phillips - fully agree with the 2 out of 10 comments below - sums up his whole time at the Bridge.
Ferreira - I'm not quite sure where / why it all went wrong, and he is still better going forward than ...
Geremi - always seemed to look very good on TV when he was at Boro, but there must now be better options as squad players
Hilarious - give a youngster a chance, my nerves couldn't take any more.
Johnson - from what I've seen of Portsmouth clips, he still looks very error-prone
Super Frank - bit of a risk to let the goals go, but the rest of his play doesn't justify a regular starting place and hasn't for almost all of the last 12+ months, and someone should still give us a sackful of cash for him

In :
Alves - make him our first Brazilian
Alexandre Pato - make him our second Brazilian and first Duck.
Richards - and pray Man City lightening doesn't strike twice, could play RB or CB which is what we need in
Lennon - very impressed with his intelligence playing inside on Sunday, unfortunately I can't see it happen
Mancienne (back from loan) - seems to get consistently high marks from QPR fans, should be given a chance in the squad
ANORB - as in another right back to add to those above, must be able to defend properly, which includes staying on your feet. I'm working here on the basis of buy 3, get at least one good one.

Other comments :
Sinclair probably needs another year out on loan, and somewhere he will be playing regularly.
Sahar may also need to go out on loan, and be playing regularly.
Boulharouz should get another season to see if he can adjust to the Premiership, and learn to pass a bit better.
Kalou and MJO are looking increasingly like part of our bright, young future.

PS. It might be interesting to give Essien different marks for the different positions he plays during the course of the game. There would have been a big range for him on Sunday.

If you limit yourself to five players which seems more likely, then Sheva stays but I agree that the rest go, other than a toss up between Hilario and Carlo.

As to who would come in, apart from Alex who one hopes will recover for next season (we constantly seem to buy injured players), it looks like a lottery. Lennon would be great but I cannot see that happening. Richards, too, but he will be very expensive and if Johnson is considered adequate, then Essien is a reliable substitute, so perhaps in our new found parsimony, Richards will stay where he is. On the other hand, it could be that Johnson is one of those who could go.

What about the reserves? Surely there are some players who can step up a level, and if not now, when?

Tony ...

You definately have beef for Ballack... Your eyes are so blinded...How do you rate A Cole above Ballack? Cole was rubbish...the own goal by Essien was because Lennon had left Cole some where...I think Cole should not play against Tots...Bridge offers better cover...Fereira is probably on his way out...his displays are really questionable...

Tony Ballack played well...actually Essien had a worse game than Ballack if you open your heart to the truth...

SWP did not flop? Were you at the game? Hopeless totally hopeless..How did we buy this player? Sorry guys but with his pace he lacks ball control utterly not Chelsea material...Almost lost it wen I saw him being brought on infront of Kalou... I think TSO errored there...

Lampard 9/10...okay okay he did score the two crucial goals...but I hate to see a player drop the ball and fail to fall back... and he did this a number of times...I think for a player of his status he is having a period of pour displays...

Cech 8/10...trying to look back and am wondring how well he played this game...Ghally's goal was a soft goal for a keeper of his caliber...overall the backline had Carlvalho on the better display...

Robben should never be started in a game of this kind of pace...we should learn to hold these teams down in the first half and then strike them off in the second half...my line up for the return should be more like
1. cech
2. Diarra
3. Bridge sub A. Cole 60min
4. Carlvalho
5. Terry (if not fit Boulhalouz)
6. Essien
7. Lamps
8. Ballack
9. Drogs
10. Shevy sub 55m Robben
11. SWP (if obi is not back) sub 55m Kalou

We need to hold them and then thrust when they are burning out...Tots have a pace game that we need to slow down and then ht them hard after controlling the game..our under rating them almost cost us this game...

Drogs has been tremendous for us but reliance on him had better stop...we need to have another point player...how did Tots scout that front man...brilliant touches on the ball

There are a few players mentioned that i don't think should go because they are great cover and don't moan about not starting (robben'esk).

SHOULDN'T GO;
Geremi - Decent player, plays most possitions
Cudicini - Great goal keeper hard to replace
Skevchenko - We should only let go aof this man if he isn't happy here. He played most of his career in a technical league, so coming to the pacey Prem is going to take time to get used to. He needs at leaset another season.

SHOULD GO;
Johnson - not good enough
SWP - not good enough
Robben - good attcking option but moans to much, could upset the apple cart.
Ferrera - lost any ability he ever had
Lamps - 50/50 because poor end of last season to the current day, but he's a crowd favorite.

Acquisitions;
David Villa - We need two really go strikers, at the moment Drogs is our only finisher.
Right back - not Richards, we need a super RB proven in the Prem, we already have replacements for that possition
Alex - i haven't seen him play but if all the hype is to be beleived then this chap. We could also look at Canavaro or Ruben.

We only need a striker, right back and full back. every other possition has decent cover, there is no need to buy three more players.

PLAYER ON LOAN;
Crespo - for sale
Johnson - for sale
Sarha - loan to Prem club
Mancinnie - loan to Prem club
Sinclaire - loan to Prem club.

So there we have it, in the words of The Special One "the truth is like the oil in the water 'pppppprrrrttt' it always come to the top.....

Tony!!
I absolutely love your analysis of EVERY Chelsea game, but I definitely agree with Jose Musumba here that you have some beef against(?) Ballack, He definitely cannot be rated 5/10, he played, and he played with heart, with a desire, you could see the way he hit the ball(albeit off target, which Lampard converted). He was all over, took a fall, got hurt but he persisted and he really prevailed. The shot that Sheva took after dribbling, losing control/balance, it went oh so close to the goal, when he missed, you should have seen Ballack supporting Sheva, that said it all, Even though I agree with the commentator who said "a person of Ballack's talent should have dont better" after a bad pass, the point is he is doing it, he is working hard, you could see very well the players were all into it. SWP, he keeps the ball too long for himself, trips over the ball, goes in circles, Arjen at least moves forward!!! and Robben actually manages to dribble and trick the opposition. He just should stop being a girl and crying at the ref, it was his whining which led to the third girl, he REALLY should concentrate on his skills and focus on reaching the goal and dropping the ball there, so that Drogba or Sheva can finish it off, Arjen should think before falling, throwing his hands up in despair at the refree, its confusing to the other players and distracitng too, and goals like the 3rd goal wouldnt happen.
Its sad with Fereira, I was and am still a fan of his, but he has not been performing, Boulhalouz is a better bet, but its tight with Bridge.and If JT is back, nothing like it.
I had a heart stopping 90 mins and wouldnt want to go through the same the coming monday!!!. Hopefully The Special one would make our wonderful players realise their full potential and kick some Spurs ass.
you go Jose and The Blues...

What happened to you people?I mean those who want Lampard out of Chelsea. You don't like him anymore?I agree that he is not in a good form but what the hell?Just look his goals the last 3 seasons.
Nobody mentioned about Essien's new 5-year deal. That's great news!:)

Wayne Bridge is going to be injured for the next few weeks after having an operation on a torn muscle in his knee tonight, according to TOCWS.

He's going to miss the next couple of domestic games: City, Sheffield United, the Spuds replay, Watford... He may be back for the Valencia tie.

It looks like we're relying on Cole and Ferreira.

Sheva apparently injured himself in training and is a doubt for the City game tomorrow and possibly the weekend game too.

That damn injury curse.

To be honest, I'm not so concerned about Sheva's injury. It gives Kalou a good chance to prove himself properly after scoring two in the last three games. :)

I rarely comment on this board since as a recent convert to football I don't think I usually have anything worthwhile enough to add to what the more experienced commenters have to say. But I freely admit to being shaken by the news of the Abramovich divorce. Its almost 3 AM in the morning here in America and as a doctor, I have patients to see at work but this news is so unambiguously terrible I need support.
Several points:

1 Of course I wish Roman and his family recover from the ordeal that must be any divorce (no personal experience with it at present and hopefully never)...

2. Daria Zhukova is very pretty but come on, as the 11th richest man in the world, RA can do better, especially if this girl cost him his marriage....

3. This will appear incredibly intrusive but I think it will be unnatural to pretend as Chelsea fans that the size of the divorce settlement is not a matter of extreme interest and urgency to us. Even the figure of 1 billion pounds (the lowest I have seen in media stories) is huge and cannot but hurt Chelsea indirectly as Roman's spending power will decline in absolute terms. In addition, no matter how rich one is, tightening one's belt in response to a massive expense like a divorce is a natural human reaction...Already RA's lack of spending in the transfer window makes much more logical sense...

4. I think fan support for RA is imperative at this juncture since he is a human being after all and this cannot but have affected him... Moreover, he supported Chelsea at its time of mortal peril and it is only fair that when he is at a low, fans of chelsea respond...

Also one more thing---
Roman's not showing up at games and avoiding dressing rooms, etc. which I had previously put down to media overexaggeration/ minor feud with JM now suddenly appears more ominous ie RA not feeling himself and in a possible depressive state. In that way, I hope daria zhukova helps and/or I am completely off base....I feel bad too about Jose Mourinho's media tantrums in January given this background and hopefully JM will reconcile with Roman (assuming of course they even have anything to reconcile about and it isnt media fantasy)...

Finally, having seen more pictures of Ms. Zhukova, I am strongly reconsidering point 2 though am not willing as of yet to retract...

Shaun Custis blows goats, a Sun insider said.

There - I've just put as much thought, research and verifiable quotes into that as went into the article itself.

Why rise to it ??

The guy always has, and always will, spout utter tosh about Chelsea. He's part of the select media bunch who seem incapable of actually being responsible for any sort of decent journalism. They thrive on belittling our club with as many cheap shots as possible, making things up when there's a barren spell of believeable news.

In a weeks time, he'll write that Jose's staying, then come the start of next season, he'll wheel out a copy of his 'exclusive' revelation from either this week or next to prove what an amazing journo he is. Or so he thinks.

I wouldn't give it any more credibilty than the incessant drivel I read about who we're going to sign. We I see them in the shirts, I'll believe it.

When I see Jose nestled in one of those fancy Recaro's at the Bernabeu, I'll believe it. But not till then.

I think Custis is trumped by this powerful piece of drivel in the Daily Heil...

www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html

This could be the worst piece of journalism I have ever read and makes me embarrassed to be on the same planet, let alone in the same profession. I actually said as much on the Mail forum, but I'm not sure they're going to print it...

vik... I knew there could be personal reasons for Roman not coming to the matches and dressing room, etc. The press has made a big meal out of it. I hope Roman would sort out his personal life and enjoy being with Chelsea again.

Looks like we wont have to face Valencia captain Marchena in the Champions League.

Or their not-cowardly-at-all reserve 'keeper................

I could only read the first small paragraph on the Sun link you posted. I think put my foot though the desk!!!

I don't blame this Curtis Fella, he's just an opertunist. It's the editor we should be berating, this person is responsible for all the irrelevant, trivial, fictional writing. How many articles in the Sun have relevance to your and my life? NONE.

It's all bollox. I'm discusted with the journalism from all the red tops.

I don'y go to many games but it would be great if some of the fan's could make up a sign for RA and strap it to the upper teir. Something comforting and happy.

I will start checking the spelling on my posts as statements like this have less weight with incorrect grammer and spelling.

I think I see your ....ahem...point - she'd certainly distract me. Lithe and a looker hardly seems an adequate description really.
