Fiorentina in for Mutu

Tuesday, 31 August 04, 01:35 PM · Comments (24)

Fiorentina have made a late bid to sign Adrian Mutu before the transfer window closes at midnight tonight.

Mutu was recently told by Roman Abramovich that he had a key part to play at Stamford Bridge, but has since struggled to get into the squad.

"The news about Fiorentina's interest in Mutu is true," his agent Andrea Pretti told Sky Sports.

"We are waiting for indication from London about their possible acceptance to allow him to leave and about the conditions regarding negotiations with the Italian side.

"Coach Jose Mourinho and Peter Kenyon are having a meeting at the moment and we are awaiting news about this.

"I hope, in the next few minutes, the situation could be unblocked.

"Chelsea's officials are talking. They probably have to look for a new solution to replace Mutu.

"Anyway, we are confident the situation can be unblocked soon."

Will Mutu's sale result in Forssell returning to the Bridge? Or a dramatic late bid for Rooney? You never know.

h3. Mutu staying at Chelsea • Update

Adrian Mutu will not be leaving Stamford Bridge to join Italian side Fiorentina.

His agent Andrea Pretti told BBC Sport: "Adrian is not leaving Chelsea, he will be staying for the next season. He is still happy there."

Mutu should sack his agent.

Personally, I was hoping we would make a bid for Rooney, although I understood that Rooney wanted to stay in the north to be close to his family. I just think that the system JM seems to employ would suit Rooney’s style but it seems everythings happened to late for a Rooney bid now.
I think we should now allow Mutu to leave. These stories keep appearing and it seems that Mutu or his agent are behind them. If Mutu truely wants to stay and play for our club he should sack his agent.

well, while I hope he stays I don’t think we can blame him for wanting to leave. How well does he have to play to be at least on the bench?he did a nice job the game before and still didn’t make the bench vs. Southampton. And he is a 15mil. player!I hope they solve this issue somehow, either play him or let him go.

Mutu again. I have to agree with Chelsea John, above. If these stories are true then either Mutu is seriously disruptive or his army of agents are hell bent on engineering another move for him, despite recent proclamations of loyalty to Chelsea.

We’ve only played a few games since Roman talked him into staying and Mutu has played, even if it was only as a substitute. For me Mutu is trouble and we should let him go, not questioning his ability but he clearly wants to be a ‘star’ somewhere and not a team player.

As for Rooney, he was a United fan as a boy and to be fair we have a considerable amount of catching up to do in the status stakes. We’re a rich team, United are a big team, there is a huge difference. I never thought Rooney to Chelsea was likely, Ferguson was always going to sign him but thanks to the vacillating Mutu it does appear we need another striker. Only 9 hours left to sign him….....

With almost our entire squard involved in their national colours.

I think we need Mutu because we need a strong team as others will falter on the way due to too many games

I really don’t think that Mutu is behind these stories. As far as I know Mutu is now in Romania training for the Saturday game. He probably is unhappy because he doesn’t get to play for Chelsea (and I truly don’t understand why, considering the rather disappointing so far performances of Kezman, Gudjohnsen and Drogba). Probably that his agent is well aware of that and tries to get advantage. Mutu should sack him indeed because I am sure that his agent’s efforts to transfer Mutu are the main reason why Mutu doesn’t play.
I think that letting Mutu go now would be really stupid, because Chelsea have no way to find a better striker fast enough. And relying on only 3 strikers, 2 of them also new to the Premiership, would be suicide.
I got tired of all these rummours and I’m waiting for the transfer window to close to put a stop to all this trouble.
I am not at all surprised that many Serie A clubs are interested in Mutu, because he was great with Parma. In fact most people (including myself) can’t understand why does Mourinho waste such a top class player.
Therefore I think that Mourinho is responsible for all this. He should have made clear that he needs Mutu and also let Mutu play a bit more. Mourinho should get used to players with strong personalities otherwise the manager is the one who is going to be thrown away.

I think it makes sense to let Mutu go and bring either forsell or cole back. But I feel its too late for all this.

I agree with Chris. Look what happened to Sir Robson in Newcastle. You mess with Alan Shearer, you lose! If you can’t deal with star players you might as well switch jobs. That’s the climate in professional sports now and while I agree that the coach makes a difference,I still think that players win games, not coaches. I bet they let him go and then scores 25 goals in Italy and we’re stuck with three strikers two of them still learning to play the english game…guess who’s gonna laugh then?
Mutu is in Romania now and he maintains that while he is hugely dissapointed for not playing, he still loves Chelsea and the fans.

So the agent now says Mutu is happy at Chelsea. This would be the same agent that earlier today was quoted, by Sky Sports, as saying he was hoping Chelsea would “unblock” Mutu’s path to joining Fiorentina on a season long loan.

I wonder what this ‘agent’ does in his spare time ? Knock out dodgy perfume in Oxford Street ? Mutu has got to go, please can we ditch this fool and his sorry collection of agents. You wait, as soon as the Winter transfer window opens there will be more bleating and more stories about Serie A sides “desperate” to sign this waster.

I’ll drive him to Florence myself. Anytime.

Blingo nice one! I can understand your anger, but it comes from ignorance and that I don’t understand. What did drogba and eidur do last match? What did kezman do? Winning through an own goal and a penalty is not something I expected. Sell Mutu or keep him, though I’ll say this much: no matter the team he goes to, if he plays he’ll score goals and set up just as many. if I sound like a fan boy I appologize, but some of you can’t tell the difference between a good player and hype.

Clearly feelings seem to be mixed about Mr.Mutu

The facts are that last season he was our least successful striker if we are measuring purely on goals.

In 30 League and Cup starts he scored 10 goals which is a goal per game ratio of 0.3. Surprisingly Crespo had the best record of starting strikers with a 0.57 , followed closely by Jimmy with 0.56 (both of whom no longer don the shirt of blue)
Eidur was third with 0.46 but still significantly higher than our man Mutu.

Now I’m one of those who think’s goals are not the only measure of a striker and also believe that Mutu brings a great deal more to the game than just goals. However my problem with this is that you can also say that of Drogba and Eidur too (haven’t seen enough of Kezman yet) so I would have to agree that having another “non-prolific team playing striker” is a luxury we can’t afford under the Mourihno style

Conculsion – let him go and bring back Forsell (who is all about goals).. unfortunately i expect this is impossible under the terms of Forsell’s loan deal – anyone know ?

If Mutu wouldn’t have been good, they wouldn’t have bought him for so much money and pay him a fat salary…I believe all these coaches that Mutu had must know a bit more about football than blingo starr, since they all valued him as a star player.
How can you tell if he’s good or not if he doesn’t play?Once he’ll play regulary and screw up all the time then you can jump on him but until then…
Maybe JM wants to keep Mutu around anyway since they didn’t let him go to Italy.

The trouble is that my objection to Mutu comes precisely because I can tell the difference between a good player and hype.

If we’re asking questions about player performances then what did Mutu contribute from November of last season onward ?

We may as well face facts here; Mutu’s loan to Juve fell through because Juve didn’t like our terms, not because Mutu was desperate to stay. If he doesn’t get picked every game he’s going to sulk and demand a transfer. I guarantee you that Mutu will leave either in January or next Summer.

As I’ve said from the very beginning, Mutu should go. Whether it’s Mutu himself or his agent who’s initiating these rumours is not important. All we want now is a settled squad and these rumours are doing more damage than good to our team spirit.

He is clearly Jose’s 4th choice striker and unless he’s perfectly happy to be just that, then it’s better to let him go.

If Mutu stays, we will risk losing one or more of Cole, Duff and Robben. If he goes, there will be more room to accomodate these 3.

At the end of the day I think it’s impossible to make everyone happy. Unless a player is totally selfless (which Mutu clearly isn’t), he won’t be happy in Jose’s squad. Look at Smertin – he was Man of Match in our first game against ManU and has since disappeared off the face of the earth! From what I gather, he’s very much a team player and that’s why he might be ok about it. Imagine if this happened to Mutu? There will be no end to his sulking.

I’m a big fan of Mutu’s and wish he was given more opportunities to prove his worth, but today’s episode has weakened my admiration of him somewhat. It seems his agent is trying to engineer an exit from Stamford Bridge for his client, and today was a desperate last throw of the dice before the transfer window closed. If Mutu genuinely wants to stay he wouldn’t sanction or stand for what his agent has unsuccessfully tried to do twice in the last month.

I’m hoping Mutu gets the chance to prove himself, but somehow I doubt he’ll be a Chelsea player long enough to do so.

I believe that any Chelsea fan making a case for Mutu’s attitude right now isn’t being ambitious. What is the man’s problem? Why can’t he wait to see how things go in the meantime since we seem to be doing fine without him, even though Mourinho was considerate enough to play him as substitute in our game at Crystal Palace and had even put him on the bench in the first game of the season against Man U? We are having our best ever beginning to a season in our history and he’s not happy to share that with us simply because he isn’t playing as much as he’d prefer?

Even if Mutu were a million Peles rolled into one, it is the height of selfishness and disregard for our club for him to be this disruptive when he knows what is at stake. I venture to say that there’s none of our forwards that isn’t better than him right now by record or by attitude. Nonetheless, this isn’t the point really; the point is that it is the coach that chooses from the squad the eleven he needs to begin a game and the five he needs to be on the bench. Mutu should simply sit down and buckle up; let him impress the coach enough with whatever he has to offer and his chance would come. Chelsea is not one of those small clubs where prima donnas rule the roost. He should take a close look at the bench and realize that there with him are more accomplished players happily waiting to prove themselves as true Chelsea players – players ready to make the sacrifice and do the hard work because they know where we are headed!

If he gives more trouble, I recommend Mourinho offloads him by January to whoever wants him!

As for the Rooney affair, I’m very happy that Chelsea did not join the bidding war, because that is precisely why Everton was dragging it out till this late – to see if Chelsea would come in. The story about Rooney preferring the North has no basis because he wouldn’t even be making the decisions as to where he’d go once the money is right. If it was a straight war between Man United and Chelsea, I believe Rooney would not hesitate to choose Chelsea for many reasons. We have a young proven coach who has a record of turning ordinary players to world beaters and he’s more likely to remain coach when Fergie rides off into retirement. Fergie may have a record of bringing up youngsters, but he’s never had any like Rooney. Rooney will have a better opportunity of fellowshipping with the world’s best in Chelsea than he will in Manchester. With the fear of takeover today, takeover tomorrow hanging on Man United, Chelsea presents a more stable opportunity. And, just by the way, coming to Chelsea will let him ‘keep’ his promise to his Everton fans when he said “Once a Blue always a Blue” (ha! ha! ha! ha!). Just a better Blue, I might add.

Chelsea has proven by not joining the bidding that we are not just a buying club. I believe that this Mutu affair was actually designed to have us scampering to Everton to get the young man immediately to replace him (after all we have the money, the agents must have reckoned). Yes, it’s possible that the agents would have thought up this, believing that blackmailing Chelsea with a threatened move now will push the Chelsea moneybags quickly to Everton’s doorstep, triggering a release of Mutu. I believe that Mourinho himself, eager to remove the tag of a club wanting to ‘buy’ the title or trophies may have clearly scuppered the Fiorentina deal and insist that Mutu sits up. Mourinho is clearly not a man to be held to ransom that easily. Any discerning mind listening to him when the bidding war over Rooney began would have immediately known that we were not going to go for Rooney. Mourinho said Man U and Newcastle were probably going for Rooney because they weren’t satisfied with what they’ve got, but that he was satisfied with what he’s got. This was a psychological attack on his rivals and at the same time a testament to the team spirit being created in Chelsea. It was a vote of confidence on the Chelsea squad as well as an assurance that no superstar or superstar-in-waiting was going to come now to disrupt the order of things. When you begin to hear Bellamy and Ameobi grumble that they’d leave if Rooney comes and Sir Alex working overtime to convince us that Rooney is the biggest talent in thirty years (in other words, he has no choice but to quickly acquire him as he quickly offloads Forlan), then we can begin to understand how effective Mourinho’s psychological hits have been.

In any case, on a practical note, Alex and Man U would soon realize that what they’ve got is a multi-million liability, a luxury that is more hype than real. Rooney has proved nothing yet in the Premiership and with the attitude he’s beginning to exhibit already outside the field at his age, I believe he’s an accident about to happen. He may well live up to his full potential, but I believe this will take more time than anyone cares to admit now (if it happens, that is). Rooney’s private demons would need to be exorcised first before we can get the best of him and I’m afraid it’s not going to happen with Fergie. Besides, he’s too injury prone!

I remember when we signed Mutu last year, my first question was Mutu who ? Like most Chelsea supporters I’d never heard of him and was a little unsure that we should be paying 15 Mil for an unknown. Then I started to read the articles about him in the newspapers and on the web and thought “hang on, this guy sounds a bit of alright”.
The season started and Mutu seemed to be everywhere, tackling back, closing down defenders, making goals and best of all scoring goals. I thought what a good buy this guy is. Then things didn’t go to well and he got injured. When he got back in the team he was a shadow of the player that had started the season. I don’t know if it was lack of confidence or if his mind really wasn’t on the job (newspaper talk about porn stars) but he certainly wasn’t doing what he did at the start of the season. I think 30 games a season is a fair return considering he had been injured and for 3/4 of that season he did not set the world alight. I started to think could he be just a hype player ?
Then comes pre-season and all the talk starts that he is not happy at Chelsea and wants a return to Italy and that Juventus wanted him. Then apparently at the last second RA spoke to him and persuaded him to stay. Then we hear how he never wanted to leave Chelsea and how much he loves the club and the supporters and wanted to show how good he is to us. I thought “well, he seems to be saying the right things so maybe he deserves a chance”.
The season starts and he comes on at Palace for 20 mins or so and does OK. Then the stories start again and according to his agent he would be interested in a move back to Italy if Chelsea unblock the way. Does this sound like a player who wants to show us how good he is ?
Now at the end of all this we are left with a player that may or may not want to play for Chelsea, who knows. I think most of the problems have been caused by this agent and Mutu needs to consider if this is the type of person that he wants representing him.
If Mutu returns to playing the way he did when he first came to Chelsea there would be no happier Chelsea supporter than I. That will take hard work and dedication, does Mutu have these ?

Until we hear comment from the horses Mutu I think it’s a little harsh to make judgement on this situation.

Clearly agent’s in todays game have far too much influence and have a vested interest in creating stories and unsettling players such as this.

Take a look at what happened to Anelka (effectively ruining his career) when his agent/brother instigated move after move purely to line his own pockets with euro’s

Misguided or not players trust their agents who convince them they are really the only one’s looking after the players personal interest and future. I imagine this trust is magnified when your playing in a foreign country where both the language and culture are alien to you.

Regardless of your opinion on Mutu’s ability – claiming him guilty of disloyalty is doing nothing but playing into the hands of his agent whose ultimate goal is to engineer another 15million quid move and a tasty 10%-20% payday for himself.

So far, it is obvious to me that when you say ‘hard work and dedication’ you say ‘Mutu’ or ‘Gudjohnsen’, but not ‘Kezman’ or ‘Drogba’. What went wrong with Mutu is obvious: he played well and got on the bench. Anyone would have been confused. You work hard, you play well then you get ‘rested’ or ‘rotated’. So, why all the work? Where is the reward?

I am very happy that Mutu is not after the money, because having such huge wages he could just stay aside and get all the drinks and women possible. But no, he struggles to get into the team, plays better than all the other strikers and it’s still not enough? Why?

I am very upset because some of the comments above. Why should Mutu accept that he is the 4th striker? Would Rooney or Forsell accept it? Or Drogba? I do not agree that Mutu did such a bad job last season, he was a team player and provided opportunities for his team mates. I said it before, the strikers provided opportunities for the midfielders last season, that is why Lampard scored so many goals.

It makes sense that the agents manufactured this ‘Mutu problem’ trying to make Chelsea to enter the Rooney bid war.

I am sure that Mutu wouldn’t play for Fiorentina. Also I am sure that he could have gone to Juventus if he really wanted. But instead he buys a house in London and brings his ex wife and son. Why would he do that unless he plans to play for Chelsea for a long while? I NEVER heard Mutu saying he wants to leave! Other people said it on his behalf.

Anyway it’s all over for now. Probably JM will have to play Mutu sooner or later. Possibly sooner if JM was only uncertain about Mutu’s future at Chelsea, possibly later if JM entered a foolish and immature war with Mutu (I could understand that Mutu is not very wise but I expect more from a manager). I am sure that soon enough 2 of the 3 other strikers will be unavailable for some games which will force JM to use Mutu. Then we’ll see who’s the best striker. I put my money on Mutu. If he doesn’t get injured he will make JM regret all these pre-season misunderstandings.

Finally, all of this is because Mutu is way too good to be left out. Otherwise he would have been gone by now (see Crespo, Veron, Jimmy, Gronjkaer, Melchiot). I want to see him play!

i think chelsea supporter are too fast to judge, mutu is a good player i prefer him to gud…though its not the striker’s fault that they’ve messed up in chelsea, its bcos of how chelsea is at the moment.
i believe if any striker wants to spoil his carrear,he should come to chelsea, see crespo who was definatly one of the best strikers in world, when he came to chelsea, his carrear got spoilt, then mutu, jimmy, gud, now drogba is about collapsing and kezman despite his prolific scoring for psv, came to chelsea and has not scored in five games.
as a chelsea fan,i believe for now, strikers that will come to chelsea will have problems but after some seasons,it will all fade.

More drivel on here than you would expect from an army of salivating salivators. The Salivation Army in fact.

Let’s be clear about one thing. If Mutu’s agent is trying to set up a deal with Juve, or Fiorentina, or any other club it is because his client has expressed a clear interest in going to that club. What commission ? Mutu was due to go on loan, so there was no fee for the agent to take a slice of.

As for why should Mutu accept that he is the fourth striker, how about the 20 or so totally inept performances he put in last season ? Did you actually see these games ? My Aunt, who passed away in the late seventies, would have been more effective. Although she does have something in common with Mr Mutu, when she passed it was to the other side.

Give me strength. Name me one decent game that Mutu has played since October of last year. One. I will concede Leicester away, name me another. My guess is that you are all Porn Stars and you’re all sleeping with Mutu. I cannot see any other reason why you would all be defending him. He wants to leave and he’s over rated, he will play 4 or 5 times between now and December, then he will join a Serie A club on loan in January. Absolute racing certainty.

I agree 120%, Boston Blue. Can’t people see that agents try to move expensive players ALL the time? Anelka is an unfortunate case, Crespo another example, but it could also have happened to Beckham, Figo, Ronaldo, Vieri. Moreover, it often happened to first-class Romanian players in the past (Hagi, Raducioiu, Adrian Ilie): I understand they all had connections with the same greedy agents and had real problems.

I must also agree with abi: it is difficult to accomodate at Chelsea. That is why I wouldn’t rely for now on Drogba and Kezman.

well, I have a feeling blingo starr is right in one thing. Mutu will go in January. You can’t prove yourself by warming up the bench so he will be the same 4th option even everybody else gets injured; they will simly buy another player. He will go to an italian team on loan and will be bought by them at the end of the season.
Another thing: Agents DO get paid even in a loan transfer so here’s your answer blingo starr! yeah 10% or so out of a few millions doesn’t sound too bad,eh?
Ronaldo is the best striker in the world, plays regulary in the best team in the world and he still plays horrible half of the games. I don’t think Lampard (who got a lot of assists from Mutu last season, by the way) is playin 100% all the games…if you believe that then you’re his mum or dad…

To even dispute Mutu’s skills proves that you don’t have a clue. Now, what really matters, is Abramovich! Can you grasp that concept? He knows that Mutu is his ONLY striker capable to entertain and make the fans sit on the edge of their seats. So, quit yackin about football and move on to something that you might understand… (gardening, maybe?)

It’s the same story with all of the chelsea players. Look at Scott Parker. He played just a couple of games briliantly scored and everything and now where is he playing. The bottom line is you cant have a world class team and have a rotation. Have you ever seen Arsenal or Man united change 2 strikers for 2 new strikers at halftime. Or take off a player who is playing good like the monaco game in the champions leage and put some totally riduclus changes. Watch any top class team. They have a formula day in and day out the same 11-14 guys play every week. The dont rotate 20-22 superstars. Chelsea has basically 2 teams they dont need to rotate, or bring in new players whenever Abramovich gets bored. they need a winning 11-14 like Arsenal. What does pires, or giggs play 2-3 games then sit 2-3 games like joe cole did last season, or Geremi or parker no he plays every game. Bottom line is that unless Chelsea build a team instead of giving a player 10 games and letting him go and bringing someone else in then they will never be top class.
