Goal of the Season

Tuesday, 08 May 07, 03:35 PM · Comments (31)

The official club website has opened the voting for Chelsea fans to select the 2006/7 Goal of the Season.

To refresh memories I've crawled YouTube for videos of the short-listed goals and posted them below. Enjoy.

Didier Drogba v. Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, September 17th

Frank Lampard v. Barcelona at Camp Nou, October 31st

Michael Essien v. Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, December 10th

Frank Lampard v. Everton at Goodison Park, December 17th

Didier Drogba v. Everton at Goodison Park, December 17th

Andriy Shevchenko v. Tottenham at White Hart Lane, March 19th

Shaun Wright-Phillips (second goal) v. West Ham at Upton Park, April 18th

Now go and vote, and let us know which you voted for in the comments. I haven't made up my mind yet...

Gotta go with Essien at Arsenal. I was watching that game with an Arsenal fan and I think it was the first time I've ever seen somebody's jaw drop / heart stop like that.

That cheered me up.

I voted for Drogba's against Everton. He deserves to have the Goal of the Season and Player of the Season awards.

Like every Chelsea Fan, so much to talk about this season, however this is about goal of the season. Gonna go with Essien against Arse-anal! Didi has scored some crackers and crucial goals, but Essien's even left Andy Gray quiet!

What a bastard of a choice!

Essiens' versus Arsenal was great but for sheer breathtaking "Bloody hell...where did that come from" I have to vote for Drogba versus Everton. The man has been peerless this season and deserves every plaudit he gets for being so outrageously overlooked by every other award in favour of The Winker from Old Trafford.

Hmm...Sheva's was bloody good though.....

Funny business with him and Ballack and their ops huh? I wonder if he'll be back next year?

I would give them both one more year, although to be fair it's when Ballack isn't there that I think I appreciate what he does more.

For sheer technique and one of the most cathartic celebrations I've ever been part of, Essien's edges it for me. Drogs against Everton was a bit special too. My player of the season, with Carvalho and Essien pretty close behind.

Grim result, but Makalele's against Spurs wasn't too bad either!

I'd have to go for the goal against Luckypool at the Bridge, just for sheer technique and finishing.

If that had been Ronaldinho or the media's darling from the Manchester Franchise scoring it, we would have heard about it and seen for months afterwards.

On saying that, there's a hell of a selection to choose from, what great goals.

Stand up, and applaud them all guys!

For a dull football team, we've not done too badly on the spectacular front, have we...?!

Gotta be Essien home to Arse.

If you want the definition of perfection on how to strike a ball - that's it

Right, I've watched them all several times today and I've decided to vote for Drogba's at Everton, just ahead of Essien's against Arsenal. I think.

I'm still not convinced that Lamps meant his against Barca.

I'm surprised that Drogs goal against Barca in the home leg is not there. Too similar to the Liverpool goal perhaps?

omg what a choice! Every single one of them was fantastic! I'm going to say essien, closely followed by drogba's against everton, maybe because his always seems like a punt than a well struck shot at goal, which always seems to put me of lol.

i'm still so happy that sheva and SWP were even considered, i love those two to bits :)

I will go for Drog against Everton. Didi has scored highest number of magnificent goals this season and this one is the jewel in the crown.

I went with Lamps at Barca. A beutiful touch on the ball. Watching it I felt there was no way it was possible to score from where he did. Essien against Arsenal was a close second in my mind. If Sheva can consistently play like that next year...

It was so hard, because each goal had utter beauty in it. But I'm going to go for Sheva's, just because I'm a total softie for that sweetie. Lamps' one against Barça was more beautiful than any painting, however.

For ones not nominated, I'd add Arjen Robben against Wigan @ JJB. Just because it's Robben.

If it's the tall, angelic, non-Chelsea player you speak of, I'll never tell!!

Although you could probably work it out just from going on my blog.

Each of these goals was pure magic, but the Drogba winner at Everton was tops.

Got to be Sheva's goal: It's scored with pure technique like a laser-guided missile, and not just a blast from a distance that might involve a bit of luck.

Thanks for putting all these together.
For technique - Essien and SWP.
For sheer joy - Drogba v Liverpool and again Essien.
For importance - Shevchenko (or Kalou v Spurs which isn't shortlisted)
For me - SWP.

I voted to Didi's against Everton, I remember screaming in the house like crazy "we never looooooooose" , it was a great sensation.

However, I think SWP's first goal against Westham was also great, anyway, a big thank you to Nick for collecting these valuable scenes, oh God, I wish I could come to England to watch the ceremony.

Proud To Be Blue.

I voted for Super Frank's goal against Barca. I remember screaming "F*** off ETA Terrorists, Riijkard & F***ing Argies" after the game!!The goal was absolutely out of the world....and the fact that it was against Barca in their backyard made it a whole lot sweeter.

The technique for Drogba's Liverpool goal is outstanding. Essien's is lovely, but it's got a toch of hit and hope about it. DD scored three like that this season, so we know he meant it.

Shame there's no room for the team goal v Man City, or SWP's v Spurs, when we passed the ball from side to side, waited for the opening and then, bam - perfect pass, perfect lay off, perfect finish.

Wow,

I don't think any other team in the Prem has as many magnificent goals (maybe matty Taylor from Pompy alone could stand against ours).

It's so hard to choose. Initialy it was Essien's magic bullet, then Didi's chest and fire against liverpool. For something out of nothing, technic, and finishing it has to be Shevchenko, that goal was the reason we brought him (although we wanted another 30 out of him). Shevy is one of my leaset favours players in the squad, this is soley due to his performances in a Chelsea shirt.

Lets see alot more of these Shevy....

...........................K.T.B.F.F.H.............................

P.s. i heard after Lampards mission impossible goal that he practises shooting from all angles on the pitch and it wasn't a flook. This does go some way is explaining why he's alway bloody shooting and not passing........

What about Makelele's goal vs spurs? Perhaps not the best, but I think it deserves mention.
