League Cup preview: Everton v. Chelsea

Tuesday, 22 January 08, 02:51 PM · Comments (49)

If a week is a long time in politics, then three months in football is surely an eternity (including tea breaks). Back in September, Jose departed the Bridge after a lover’s tiff too many with Roman and a new sheriff that no-one really wanted arrived in town.

Avram Grant’s appointment was generally greeted with the same kind of shock and derision that Cleavon Little’s Bart suffered in ‘Blazing Saddles’; the stunned Blue faithful gathered themselves like the residents of Rock Ridge and sung “Now is a time of great decision / Are we to stay or up and quit? / There's no avoiding this conclusion: / Our club is turning into shit. Amen.” Or at least that’s what it sounded like at the time.

Elsewhere, Liverpool fans chortled as big green piles of Yankee dollars were flung down the Mersey at Rafa as fast as he could spend them on fancy electric beard trimmers and exciting forwards to rotate ad infinitum.

Another title challenge was on, they bellowed like Spurs fans proclaiming their annual assault on fourth place; Chelsea would be hard-pressed to make said spot, end up on Channel 5 playing some Lithuanian pipe fitters in the UEFA Urn and the new Scouse Superdome would be up on bricks, confirming their return to the pinnacle of English football.

In short, had anyone mentioned a Carling Cup semi-final for Chelsea back in ‘Black September’, it might have been looked upon as “the best we could hope for this season”. Never mind which resurgent team from Merseyside we were likely to end up playing in a semi-final (again).

All of which has made the last few months all the more pleasant (and indeed surprising), both in terms of Chelsea’s progress and events elsewhere. Down in SW6, Bart — sorry — Avram has survived most of what has been thrown at him and come out smelling of anything but what was predicted, arriving in 2008 with his hands on all the chicken soup and kneidlach still available. A couple of astute signings made, key players due back from injury and Africa Cup of Nations duty before too long, Ballack patrolling the midfield like Rommel in his pomp and Pizarro finally looking like the net-bursting goal monster we paid nothing for.**

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s soccertainment business venture seems to be encountering a few teething problems. Rafa looks increasingly likely to be as unemployed as Avram’s tailor before you can say “another turgid draw at Anfield”, while his paymasters trot the globe looking for another stooge to teach Stevie G the value of retaining the ball (or to flog the club to the highest bidder, depending on who you believe). Schadenfreude? Oh well, if we must.

All of which brings us nicely on to another semi (it must be all that terribly attractive football we’re playing); unless the statisticians amongst us can confirm otherwise, our eighteenth in fourteen years. Thanks to Joleon Lescott’s inability to notice the shortest man on the pitch climbing onto his shoulders during injury time of the first leg, we head to Goodison Park with a lead only slightly less slender than the chances of Alan Shearer not sticking the proverbial knife into Kevin Keegan when things inevitably go pear shaped on Tyneside.

Aside of the absence of Mikel, Drogba, Kalou and Essien who are all on ACN duty, Chelsea will be without Wright-Phillips who picked up an ankle injury in the win against Birmingham on Saturday with Terry and Shevchenko the other notable long term absences. Lampard could feature at some point while Anelka is not cup-tied and available for selection. And according to my Evertonian boss, he seems to love scoring against them.

Predictions: Goodison Park will be very noisy. Avram will be wearing an item of black clothing that doesn’t fit properly.

** one of the above may not be entirely true.

That preview has cheered up my day, it's nearly as funny as the current state of affairs in Liverpool. No offence JD... as much as I giggled at reading your pearls of wisdom, Stevie Me and his pathetic excuses for YET another poor performance wins hands down.

Ah, but *next* year Liverpoo are definitely going to be up closer to ManU and challenging for the title! Or maybe, the year after that! Or maybe they'll just be saying so in August again ... and again ... and again ...

Heh, heh.

Great preview. Thanks for taking the time/effort to do the pre-match reports.

My only fear for tomorrow evening is.... well we seem to hit a brick wall when we have semi's in the Mersey area. We all know too well our last two trips ended in tears, and yes this is Everton, but on current form they're better than their cousins from across the park.

Great article as always JD! There is nothing better than seeing Liverpool toiling away against cheaper opposition week-in week-out! Especially when the fans get wound up! I think Everton will be a tough proposition though - we will need to play like we did in the first leg when we should have won by 2 or 3 goals. If we win the Carling Cup yet again this year, I think Carling ought to award us the trophy for keeps!

By the way, I hear from 'fat-bloke-down-the-pub' that we are chasing the Croatian defender-cum-midfielder Corluka (who I rate highly) - anyone know if there is any truth to this rumour?

JD,

Thanks for taking the time to put a preview together.

From what I've heard, Lamps wont be available as he's suffered a set-back and is crocked again.

Line-up wise, I'd be surprised if Makelele didn't play to offer protection to the back four. Then again, he'll be needed Saturday at Wigan so AG may have a call to make on which game he deems more important. Also think Ivanovic may be involved, but Saturday could be a better option for his debut.

I take it "Ballack patrolling the midfield like Rommel in his pomp .." was the comment you mentioned may not be true.

It couldn't possibly be the mention of Pizarro. A strike rate of one-in-one means he's that "net-bursting goal monster" more than anyone.

@JD - yes, an excellent preview. I can only assume you live in Liverpool because you've got to be unemployed to have the time required to write such a splendid preview :-)

I wrote my review of the Birmingham game in 15 minutes at 11:30 Saturday night after Nick mailed me to say his computer had imploded. Your preview makes you look like Zola and me like Pizarro, so I'm going to put in some extra training in case I get invited to write a review in the future.

The last time Spurtz won a League Cup semi (and by the same score) we don't generally talk about on here, but they did at least have the decency to lose the final.

Interesting to note Gallas's contribution to team morale at 4-1 down - clearly spat in Bendtner's face. Lovely bloke.

really great result at spurs today.
really good news about SWP chances playing at everton tomorrow.

as for Corluka's transfer from ManCity - here in Croatia there is not a word about it written anywhere. which usually means either it's true, and it's being kept in secrecy or it's not happening.
but, i guess you knew that, already ;)

frankly, he just arrived to ManCity this summer, and i doubt that ericsson would let him go. but, if roman makes him an offer he can't refuse...

Perhaps I'm going to be to slightly controversial here and note that Rottenham under Mr Ramos seem to be playing some quite attractive football. Having seen some of their games on MOTD etc.. they look quite useful although suspect at the back a bit like KK's Newcastle during their golden era.

My point is... if Senor Ramos can do that in such a short space of time, why can't (cough cough) AG be doing the same on a more consistent basis.

(Puts on flak jacket, tin hat and ear defenders and hides under desk)

And yes JD... interesting point on such wonderful team spirit from Arse, it's the usual toys out of the pram syndrome for those young whipper snappers when things go wrong. According to the press there was a little spat between....... below is a cut and paste from the BBC website gossip column.

Arsenal striker Niklas Bendter was apparently left with a cut nose following an altercation with team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor during last night's 5-1 defeat to Tottenham. (Various)

@Clive

Not slightly controversial at all but slightly misguided.

As a self appointed defender of Avram I've got to present the facts over the myths. Since Avram has been in charge we have averaged 2.25 points per game in the league. Ramos, since he took over, has averaged 1.54 per game. If Chelsea had only averaged a pathetic 1.54 points per game with Avram we'd be 11 points worse off placing us 15 points behind Man U, trailing behind Man City and worst of all behind Liverpool.

This issue about sexy football is a blue herring. Sure Roman would like more sex but the primary reason for dispatching Jose is that RA found him extremely irritating.

I'm just happy to be getting sex on a regular basis. Making it last longer and more exciting can come later.

Clive you are correct but i wouldnt feel right if i didnt justify you putting the flak jacket on. AG has had a team that have been told...OK OK drummed into them what they have to do - JM was army like in the way he would demand how the team play. Spuds on the other hand kinda did whatever they wanted and Jol made excuses after. As a result Senor Ramos has an easier job to change them as they werent successful and had low moral. Chelsea is more a role of helping them free their mind so they can play with flair...and ignore the voices of DONT DO IT!!

I'm all for pragmatic efficient football, it gets results and points, and more importantly trophies. As far as the sex goes... regardless of how regular anyone gets it, a few positional changes break the monotony.

Anyway as far as tonight goes.. Viagra all round for the team to help them past this semi problem in our "Capital of Culture" tonight.

I bet that title was nicked by our (not stereotyping here) rascally scouser friends. ;-)

Ramos took over a team of (mostly) very good players who were underperforming. So he had much more room for obvious improvement. AG took over a team of extremely good players (plus Sidwell) who were doing fine.

I suspect that if Ramos had been the one to replace José, there'd have been more obvious differences. The best you can say about AG so far is that he's keeping things ticking over -- but then that's also the worst you can say about him, which isn't bad.

Poor old Arse, eh? Still haven't learned how to cope when things aren't going their way. I wonder how well another trophyless seasons will go down over there, if that's the way it turns out.

Blimey, I leave this place for 5 minutes and it turns into some sort of Carry On filled bed of innuendo...

Ramos is a good coach, no question and his record in cup competitions is exceptional; he has some very good players at his disposal (Berbatov) and some with potential they are yet to really fulfil (Lennon), but there are a few glaring gaps in the team which will hamper him until they are addressed - it is questionable whether players like Lee, Tainio (?) and Dawson are truly top 6 standard. I do feel that as long as Comoli continutes to throw millions at the likes of Downing, they are unlikely to be as much of a threat to 4th as City and Villa.

Grant inherited an excellent team with a winning mentality 'built in'; Ramos got Spurs playing very well last night, but how many times have Spurs lost their bottle when the pressure was on in recent years? See Keane's penalty miss in the NLD just before Xmas - you can't buy that winning mentality and it takes an awful lot to drum it into a team. Ramos is showing signs of doing that; Avram is successfuly sustaining it at the Bridge - should we get through tonight (arguably his biggest game in charge thus far) it will be interesting to see how we fare in the final. Ramos has been there before but most of his players haven't; most of our players have but Avram hasn't - think we'd edge it but it will be a tricky game.

But let's get there first...!

Wenger's inability to see such ill-discipline is becoming more and more comical.

Had it been a Spurs played who'd head-butted Bendtner, he'd have been having a coronary on the sidelines. As it was, the selective vision that is commonplace with him prevailed again.

At least Gallas was happy to come out and confirm it happened to the press.

Spurs played well, but 5 - 1 flattered them a bit. Arsenal had to chase the game from 2 - 0 down, so I'm certainly not losing any sleep in them turning over the self-proclaimed greatest kids ever.

I'm sure Arsenal will happily tell you it's ONLY the Carling Cup; they can concentrate on the League; it was only their reserve team (add cliche as applicable).

I'm a little disappointed by Avram's rhetoric ahead of this game. We all know it's the Carling Cup, not the Champions League so why point out so vehemently that it's not a priority. How about saying "We want to win it because it's a competition we're in and we want to win every competition we're in?" Why throw in the excuses so early, Mr. Grant?

We're going to miss Shaun tonight.

Mirror image

Remarkably, in their first 28 games in charge of Chelsea in all competitions (including last night’s cup-tie), José Mourinho and Avram Grant share identical records:

Played 28 Won 21 Lost 2 Drawn 5

Not sure what that add's to the Grant debate but there you are....

I think it is safe to say however, that they don't share identical tailor's !!

To be fair to the special one, he did have to get a fair few new players to gel when he took over whereas Grant had a pretty good basis to work with.

As long as we keep winning I guess it doesn't matter too much.
