Premier League: Chelsea 2 - 0 Sunderland

Sunday, 09 December 07, 11:55 PM · Comments (82)

Match reports

Sunday Times, Brian Glanville: "Chelsea, deprived of Didier Drogba, beat a passive Sunderland team without panache or excessive difficulty."

Independent on Sunday, Nick Townsend: "Ultimately, it was a comfortable enough home victory, though there had been a period after the interval when Sunderland had suggested they may just fashion an equaliser."

Sunday Telegraph, Duncan White: "Rattled by the news of Didier Drogba's knee operation, Chelsea's support can hardly have been emboldened by the sight of the faded talents of Andrei Shevchenko taking to the field. Yet the Ukrainian, the one-time scourge of the meanest defenders in Serie A, showed that while the legs may not work like they used to, the goal instinct has not quite been extinguished."

The Observer, Stuart Barnes: "Andriy Shevchenko would be the first to admit that his time at Chelsea has been a big disappointment, falling far short of what he hoped for and what the club expected in return for a £30million transfer fee. Appearances have been sporadic, match-winning performances even less so. But for once he has delivered, and now has the chance to play a significant role in his team's season."

Official Chelsea FC Website: "A 15th game in a row unbeaten and three solid points in the bag."

The goals

23' Shevchenko 1-0 75' Lampard (penalty) 2-0

The good

A satisfactory 3 points in a game that promised much early on but in the end faded into a Mourinho-esque workmanlike professional performance.

  1. Getting a good result was always essential to keep the pressure on the top two and with our habit of getting draws against battling lower teams this was a potential banana skin. Luckily Sunderland were every bit as poor as we probably hoped and it seemed obvious that damage limitation was the game plan with the faintest of hopes of perhaps pinching a draw. No chance.
  2. Joe Cole. Fabulous game and even with the return of his tricks he always looked a danger, made some great play, could have scored had he attained some cojones to shoot! Recent performances have showed what we missed last season.
  3. John Mikel Obi (yay!). Absolute class. This young man did not put a foot wrong bar one misplaced pass in the Sunderland half which no-one ran onto. Cool calm collected, made some good and fair tackles and impressed in everything he did.
  4. Alex. This solid centre half is showing the sort of form which would make him an automatic first choice anywhere else which makes Mourinho’s decision to not get him last January utterly bizarre. Once again did all the simple things well and kept it basic. As a Brazilian, all this pragmatic football must be killing him inside.
  5. Andriy Shevchenko’s goal. It’s a comparative rarity to see a striker (or anyone) use the ancient art of the diving header to score a goal and even more unusual for our continental friends, so it was a real pleasure to see Shevchenko show how it is done. A fabulous header and a great piece of play from John Terry and Salomon Kalou.
  6. Salomon Kalou. Yep, that’s right! It’s not an illusion. He made some great contributions and although the intelligence factor is missing he has undoubted talent. One thing is he is still confused about whether to play as a striker or winger and this seems to be where the root cause of his indecisive nature lies. A bright future if the right manager gets hold of him.

The bad

  1. Sunderland. Roy Keane has done fabulous things with this team and changed his own image into the intelligent and thoughtful person that is patently the Dr. Jekyll to his on-pitch Mr. Hyde personality. However, this team are genuinely looking out of their depth and on this performance will do well to avoid the drop. A shame really because I have a weird soft spot for Sunderland and their fans.
  2. Claudio Pizarro. I’ve seen about as much of him as everyone else and my jury just delivered its verdict back. Guilty! Guilty of being a strolling coiffured ponce with shiny white boots that he isn’t fit to lace up himself. A complete duffer if ever I saw one and in no way anywhere near good enough to stand in for Dider Drogba. Boy has he got some work to do to change my mind.
  3. Peter Walton, the referee. Oh dear. Apart from the penalty and the sending off his decisions were way off beam. Penalising us for reasonable challenges and letting Sunderland's clog dancers slide into two-footed tackles, pull shirts and climb all over our players had the incensed Matthew Harding Lower baying for his blood. I’d never heard of him before this game... Is he a newbie?
  4. The news about Drogba. This sounds like managerial madness to me, to allow a key player to have an operation in order, it seems, to assuage the player's desire to appear for his country in the African Cup of Nations. Seriously I believe this will be a massive issue for us, because I just don’t see Shevchenko and certainly not Pizzaro doing the business for us. Couldn’t the operation at least have waited until after Arsenal? As much as I love the big Ivorian I seriously do question his desire to continue playing for us after this.

Player ratings

  • Carlo Cudicini: Didn’t have a lot to do again but he inspires the defence with as much confidence as Cech - 7/10.
  • Juliano Belletti: Another good game and a real wing-back in the true sense of the position - 7/10.
  • Alex: A good all round game and looks to be a really dependable centre back. It’s heart-warming to know he’s ours - 7.5/10.
  • Ashley Cole: Starting to look like the attacking wing back that Arsenal had and seems to be relishing a new found freedom to attack. Linked well with Kalou - 7.5/10.
  • John Terry: Every day and in every way he is getting closer to his imperious best. Faultless display and made a wonderful block to allow Kalou to get the ball across to Sheva for the first goal - 7/10.
  • Frank Lampard: Other than his perfect penalty strike seemed to be crowded out in midfield and made a few unforced errors - 6/10.
  • Joe Cole: Currently our most inventive player and certainly seems to be in a rich vein of form. Now if only he could get a few more goals - 8.5/10.
  • Andriy Shevchenko: A great diving header for the first goal and some neat footwork shows he knows what to do with a ball. Unfortunately he is painfully slow and can anyone explain why he keeps drifting to the wings? I want my strikers in the box, not crossing the bloody ball in - 7.5/10.
  • John Mikel Obi: Sheer class and surely now an automatic first choice? I can’t think of anything remotely poor about his performance - 8.5/10.
  • Salomon Kalou: A good game and for once a tad unfortunate to be substituted. Had the odd frustrating moment and was unlucky not to score with a header of such grace and poise that Ruud Gullitt would have doffed his cap - 8.5/10.
  • Shaun Wright-Phillips: Always looked threatening and made some good runs, unfortunately blotted his copybook with a howler of a cross when under absolutely no pressure at all - 7/10.
  • Steve Sidwell (sub): A ginger Ray Wilkins! Came on to shore the midfield up and did a good job - 7/10.
  • Claudio Pizarro (sub): I’m better than him. The only good things he did were to annoy Liam Miller into a silly reaction which got him a red card and the slightest of touches to a Lampard scuffed shot which diverted onto the post. Another player in the class of Del Horno, Bhoularouz and Maniche that Mourinho bizarrely liked - 3/10.
  • Overall team performance: Good, professional and workmanlike with little evidence from 30 minutes onwards of the new free flowing attacking Chelsea. Mourinho himself would have been grinning like Jack Nicholson’s Joker at this showing - 7.5/10.

Man of the Match

Apart from Pizarro none of the players were poor. Frank was off his game a bit but still struck a perfect penalty so for me this prestigious award goes to John Mikel Obi who’s consistency and level of performance has been nothing short of superb. Funny how he barely rates a mention in the press and broadcast media unless he gets sent off.

Final thoughts

Seventy-one games undefeated at home is a hell of a record and it’s hard to see anyone ruining the run anytime soon. The game itself was almost what you might describe as boring and several people commented on this during both halves, me included — in fact I’ve rarely yawned so frequently during a game. Sunderland wouldn’t have scored if they’d been playing all night long and I might even question if they would have scored had we played with 5 not 11.

To this end the best thing was another 3 points and only 6 points off the magical 40 points mark and the threat of relegation fades away again! After Liverpool’s defeat at Reading and Arsenal’s at Middlesbrough today we’re right back in the mix. Can we stay there? Well, I’d settle for a point at The Emirates next week because all of our next 3 games against our rivals are at home in the second half of the season. So our chance to make up the points is still there.

And one last note — this is a rumour mill moment. The first one comes from a source who’s success hit rate of rumours is about 90% — Marco Van Basten is being lined up to take over as our Head Coach in the summer after Euro 2008, with Grant being restored to Director of Football. The same source has also said watch out for the return of... Eidur Gudjohnsen in the January window! Boy will he get some reception!

The second one, from a source who’s success hit rate is about 70%, is that we will be welcoming Frank Rijkaard in the summer, who Roman Abramovich was very impressed with during our meetings with Barcelona. Apparently Abramovich liked his media friendly politeness and his style of football is where Roman wants us to be.

Frankly I’d take either.

Keep the Blue Flag Flying High!

Good performence particualrly from Mikel, We werent at our best but still managed to get all 3 points!
I thought you were a bit harsh on Pizarro bare in mind he hasnt started a game for us in a while!
I feel he wouldve made an bigger impact on the game had he started instead of Sheva! Does anyone know if Ballack will be available for the Arsenal clash?

Interesting to see SWP in a central position rather than playing as a pure winger. I thought he did really well. Turned his man neatly on a couple of occasions and went forward into space without losing the ball (unlike the thing he sometimes does on the wing where he bolts as fast as he can down a blind alley and then hits a cross anywhere from 1 to 5 on the Gronkjaer scale).

To the bad I would add Grant babbling about entertaining football in the post match interview. Could he be on a retainer? Is "entertaining" a secret code word in some international spy ring of which he is a member? What's wrong with him? Rijkaard, Van Basten, anyone, please.

Nice to see Kalou's confidence come back with the cross for the goal. Just before that he faked injury after losing possession, presumably because he was embarrassed at having coughed the ball up. With him and Joe playing well we may even manage the odd draw once Obi joins Drogba on the absentee list.

I really like the Eidur rumour, Tony.

What we currently lack is a link man, and Eidur used to play that role to perfection.

Personally, I am quite happy with Grant at the moment and cannot believe the anti-Avram sentiment.

The bloke has lost once in 15 games and has got us back into the title race. I have no idea whether it is him doing well, or perhaps Jose wasn't quite as good as we made him out to be.

The reality is the football hasn't changed (home to Man Citeh aside), and he has clearly has been told by those above to tell the world that we are playing exciting football. Let him ge on with his job and solong as we keep winning there will be no complaints from me.

Great to see both Sheva and Kalou (after my slightly premature comments after the Wet Spam game)have sound games. Maybe there is hope for us yet in January!

Good report Tony.

Re “managerial madness” allowing Drogba to have the operation, I’d question Drogba rather than the management. If the players knee locked up in training what else are the management supposed to do. If they play him against his will he’ll be winging about how we’re threatening his career and you’ll all be blaming the management for that. Being a cynic I think Drogba has timed this so he can have the operation at our expense so that he’s fit for Africa, yes, at our expense.

My buying policy would be 1) no Africans until their cup is synchronised with our season and 2) no Frenchman because they’re all wingers. The imminent arrival of Anelka will raise the squad winge level to new heights.

Also I can’t let the Sidwell comparison to Ray ‘Butch’ Wilkins stand. Whilst he was with us he was a fantastic player, burdened with captaincy at 19, and played loads of defence splitting long balls. It was only when he left us that he adopted sideways passing. Butch was class, Sidwell is distinctly ordinary. His brother Graham was also underrated – had great ball skills.

Greenlight – completely agree with you about your disbelief of the current anti-Grant sentiment.

However people have a polarised view on the Grant / Mourinho affair and the facts and results won’t dislodge this view.

The current scenario is

1. Arsenal are playing the greatest football since Brazil of 1970 (according to the press)
2. Arsenal are managed by a long term, stable and high class manager
3. Man U are managed by arguably the greatest manager of all time (in England at least)
4. Manu U have the golden generation, the best players he’s ever managed (according to Fergie)

Yet despite having two such outstanding adversaries, since the departure of Joe we have steadily and quietly climbed the table to be in striking distance of the top. Yet those with the anti-Grant polarised view would claim it’s nothing to do with him because

1. It’s the team doing it by themselves in memory of Jose
2. It’s the backroom team
3. Grant doesn’t even attend training sessions. If this point is true there are several other clubs in the league that could benefit from this approach by banning their manager from training

May our steady progress continue under the guiding hand of this bumbling Israeli.

Silently creeping a lot closer to the top, which is good enough for me. But I wish Grant would stop this constant bullshit about entertaining football, it's becoming tiresome. Just accept the 3 points no matter how they're obtained.

Sunderland were very poor, and they were successful in dragging us down to their shambolic level in the second half. Their fans however were a different matter, and were in very good voice, after all it was a nice day out for them, and they were making the most of it.

My highlight of the afternoon, was when David Speedie was introduced to the fans at halftime. What? I hear you cry!!! but believe me from my vantage point in the Shed Upper he was taking a verbal barracking from the "Mackams" when he approached our end.
He responded by making a very sly "wanking" gesture towards them,
PRICELESS! I'm easily pleased.

With Hleb, Fab and Van Persie out for Arsenal (and they have a bigger midweek game than us), we've a real chance. However, I honestly cannot see a 4-3-3 spearheaded by Shev beating the Arse. Could be wrong, but we'll see.

Big few weeks coming up for Grant... Like many, I'm pleasantly surprised by our results (all these games were clearly winnable, but he still had to win them, which he has with minimum fuss and a whole lot of bullshit about entertainment), but won't be sure of his mettle until we've seen him in a big game. I'd still rather see somebody else on the bench - somebody with a track record - but there's no arguing with results.

Yes, fair enough, you have to give Grant credit for calming things down and keeping the team solid and steady when it looked like everything was falling apart. Plus he and his staff have got the team playing pretty well. I even quite like his line in dry wit. But I just can't stand the way he parrots the party line, as if everyone will believe it if he says it enough times (or perhaps more pertinently, as if he believes he'll get to keep his job if he can persuade one person in particular that it's true...)

Credit to him also for playing SWP plus three attacking forwards. Not all his idea, we had SWP in that position a few games towards the end of last season, but it showed a bit of flexibility.

With Drogba out, we're probably going to see a lot of that exact team (Riccy will come back in for Alex I suppose). A settled line-up could do a lot of good. They look like they're getting used to playing with each other. Belletti and Joe, Cashley and Kalou, Obi and Frank -- they seem to be lnking well. Mind you, Sunderland would make anyone look good.

A much as i don't like the man, there is no arguing with results.

The ideal senario for the coming Sunday is We beat the Arse and Liverpoo beat or draw Manure. I know one thing for sure, the Christmas period is going to be exciting for the top four. I'd love to See Liverpoo fith or even sixth; I'll be collecting a score in January as long as there not 1st or 2nd. Their fans are always over omtomistic.

A good result made even better by Reading and Boro puncturing a few bubbles. Wouldn't be surprised to see Roy Keane sniffing around a few decent centre halves in January - their defence away from home is truly shocking.

Grant certainly doing far better than any of us could have dreamed a few months ago; irrespective of any debate as to how much or little he has to do with team affairs, wins are wins, however they are achieved.

Next weekend at the Emirates will be very interesting; Villa, Newcastle and Boro have shown how to play the Gooners, albeit away from home, but we'll need to work very hard all over the pitch - it will be a good test of how far the likes of Mikel (and indeed Grant himself) have come. Think we're likely to miss Essien more than Drogba - his energy in midfield would have been a key part of shutting their passing game down.

Isn't Ballack due to reappear at some point in the not too distant?

I don't think we should pay too much attention to who we're lead to believe will be missing for the Gunners. I imagine there'll be some magic in the treatment room and Fabregas and RVP will be there or thereabouts for Sunday.

Jonathan's right in us needing to take heed from the teams who've troubled Arsenal recently, but I'm concerned we're not performing that well. Yeah, we're getting results, but we're not playing brilliant football. Contrary to what Avram 'Broken Record' Grant says. Comfortable yes, but just 'doing enough' against the dregs of Rosenborg, Derby and Sunderland is hardly scaring the rest of the league. We seem to have tailed off a bit since we mauled Man City. I was hoping that was the shape of things to come, but it seems to have been a one off.

I don't think we've been really tested opposition wise that much in Grants reign - Sunday will really show if / how things have changed post-Jose.

Another solid performance all round and well in with a chance of the title again. Good to see Ashley Cole getting back to the player that I admired for Arse so often but share the thoughts of others regarding the imminent no-Drogba period. Good header by Sheva for his goal which would have given him more confidence but he isn't up to a lone striker role and Pizarro hasn't exactly been on fire. Sunday will be a good test for them and AG, and while I think Grant has got generally good results so far, unless he wins three (or four) trophies, the idea of Van Basten or Rijkaard sounds a positive step if the season does fizzle out and we end up empty-handed.

Attractive football... A bit worried that we have started to try and walk the ball into the net when we break through and make some space. Instead of shooting I've seen some of our lot going for needless one-two's...

Enjoyed watching the Borough game more tha n ours, oh it was good to see them lookicng so clueless.

Baffling Tony really baffling...

I had Laps is off to Juve? How I hope. I do not know how a player with a lot of quality "according to many here" will just walk around the pitch and contribute to poor display like Lampard has and still score a 6 for shooting in a penalty...

Many think I have beef with this player but truth be told I have no liking for a player that holds the club at ransom and decides to do what he feels on the pitch...He countlessly loses the ball and does he chase back???? No he will leave it to some one else.

I do not know about you lot but the more you seek beautiful football and you have a player with an attitude like this then I do not know what to say...

A lot of words have been thrown towards players like Kalou who despite the need to upgrade skills still show a lot of endeavour...This bloke just kills it for me. He is our creative midfielder but all the Lampard loving crowd at Chelsea will find no fault with his underhand tactics...I say off to Juve....

The only fault I see with Grant at present is his insisting to play lampard...Let him sit him on the bench some games and maybe just maybe he will know the value of wearing the blue on one's back...

A lot of comments have been said about Arsenal's mercenaries but I would rather a mercenary that dies and fights for the club than one of our own that will look on as the "children and women" get slaughtered.

I know we can beat any club yes even Arsenal but the attitude has to change. The boys have got to begin playing like they want to win this.

I was at the pub watching both our game and the Manure game. The Mancs sure want to win as shown by the scorelines but we have the hearts to do it all that remains is the desire.

Rijkard to chelsea...Come on people. The bloke does not know how to dictate games. He has the best players but since his number 2 (Cate)left his play has become ordinary and uncoordinated. I also highly doubt that Cate would want to be number 2 to hm again knowing well that it was he that was pulling the strings at the club and the praise going the other way. I would rather Avram than Rijkard.

We've now gone 15 games unbeaten under Grant, and if we're being fair, the defeat to the Mancs shouldn't count against him either.

We're still contesting on all fronts, and with a bit of injury free luck and a couple of decent players added in January, we could or should win another trophy or two this season. So why are people still talking about, and seemingly desiring managerial change?

If it all goes the shape of the pear and we end up potless next may, then we can all play guess the gaffer...'Till then, I reckon Grant's earned the right to a bit of respect.

I think some are underestimating what Drogba brings to the team.

There's no other striker that I know with with the consistent performance of this man. He is a HUGE player for us and should not be allowed to go.

"Holding the club to randsome"
The amount of money a football club profits and turnsover is astounding. With sponcership, inflated ticket prices and expensive merchandise. Should the players really watch the board make all the money when they are on the pitch doing a usually good job of an extremely hard game?

NO, I do think the wages are astonashing, but it's just a slice of the pie. AND it's a big pie, I don't the players can be critasized, if the club didn't have the money (wheather it be us or others) then they shouldn't fork out. We have alot of money and you have to admire their business mind to get what they can.

There is a very valid arguement of this high wages system brings complacency. I think performance related wages and a capped system would help in this.

Anyway, we should be able to win with or without him, and I know I will be supporting Ivory Coast in the African Cup.

It is not Drogba's fault that the tournament is played mid-season, but having said that, Im sure it isn't endearing him to the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

I doubt if he will be there come 2008-2009 season, but his performances over the last 2 months leave me in no doubt that he will give his all until the day he leaves.

Hi Tony,
good write up as usual. But let's be honest here, neither Van Baston, Rijkaard, Benitez or much anybody else was being lined up to be the England manager in front of Jose. So when logic comes, do you think we are still taking a step forward or back? Rijkaard won the Spanish league because other than Valencia and two other clubs in Spain, only Barca and Madrid win La liga. (and I’m Spanish originally, so go figure) Do you think Rijkaard would have had the balls to stand up to the duo-poly of Arsenal and United and battling Liverpool on a third front as well as Barca in Europe? Four fronts in total? No, I did'nt think so! As much as I know you are trying to cheer us all up from the ever, lingering hangover from JM (to which incidentally near enough the whole nation just indulged in wanting Jose to be the England manager), and not Rijkaard or Vab-baston incidentially have even featured as good enough for England, I still don’t see us winning the league or Champions league. Sorry, but I don’t. Maybe a Scholari could infuse something that JM had or another JM, but sadly, I see another term of also ran’s in the forthcoming years for us. This weekend, I was more interested and animated in seeing Liverpool loose than us winning frankly because believe me, when we go to Blackburn, West Ham, Man-City away oh, and Portsmouth, I don’t see us coming away with anything more than a point at most, which means eight points dropped. For me, I don’t care about how we play or how we are perceived. Neither did Man-U when they dominated. So why are we bothering who plays and does not play while we have second rate managers and an owner who clearly does not care about winning? Lastly, it has been noted on several occasions by many on here and myself also about Grant’s continous sniping back at JM after every match about how good we play. Utter rubbish! Grant has lost more points than JM so far in the Prem yet he does’nt talk about that does he? I can almost guarantee you that the first loss we take at home which IS coming he WILL be booed, and that’s just what he deserves! CHELSEA FOREVER!!!!

Am I happy we are not at war and having people with this kind of attitude in the trenches with me. They would surely shoot whoever they do not want with them.

Avram or no Avram there is no way I would wish for a loss for Chelsea? NEVER!!! I would love us to play beautiful football but winning ugly will also do it for me irrespective of whom we have steering the ship...

Someone up there stated that Avram has conjured up some respect for the club but hell no are some of the JM happy induced Chelsea fans going to let him rest. As a matter of fact he is not coming back so deal with it you are begining to sound like a broken record. Even if Avram were to win the league and the Champions league this season you would still go on as to how JM would have managed it too.

Hey am actually out of here. I will find myself another site that has fans with Chelsea at heart as many on this site feel that Chelsea left with Morinho.

So long and may God help you lot!

It seems a shame to want to block Jose Musumba’s comments. We've all got different views and personally I don't find Jose's too off the wall.

However the posters on here do seem to be divided into 2 camps, pro TSO and not too bothered about TSO.

Personally I find Dio's comments harder to take than Musumba's. Dio seems to despise Avram so greatly that he wants us to lose at home so he stick one on Avram.

Managers and players come and go but I support Chelsea and I've never ever wanted them to lose.

Removing a point of view not many agree with is something President Mow would do. A dictator and a lunatic.

It's for the better of society (and this blog) that everyone can voice their opinions. You learn for different points of views wheter you agree with them or not.

I think that a number of things have got lost in translation over recent weeks on the whole issue of Grant / Mourinho.

The main bugbear of most (me included) was the way the whole thing was handled and what it meant for the future of the club; Mourinho certainly used up all his goodwill with Roman, no question, but to start installing people in that catch-all 'Director of Football' type role to peer over his shoulder looked to be the wrong way to go about things. And whilst he is gone, given what he achieved in such a short space of time, the man (or men) that follow him will always be compared to him - it is only human nature for people to do so.

With all that in mind, whatever anyone thinks of Grant, I sincerely hope he is treated fairly and professionally by the club and doesn't suffer the same behind the scenes manouvering and backstabbing that Mourinho appeared to endure (some of albeit self-inflicted) during his final months at the Bridge. If things don't go his way, I'd hope that Roman's latest best pal or recommendation by the likes of Zahavi don't appear behind him, lurking in the background and fuelling speculation about his future to make his job more difficult than it already is.

The director of football type role seems to function well in some European leagues; here it seems to be used in order to put another level of management in to either 'monitor' the manager and/or upon whom to dump the blame when things don't go well and the shareholders / owner need a scapegoat (take a look at Levy and Spurs - a textbook example of blame shifting if ever there was one). For a football club with aspirations of world domination, clear management and vision is needed, and the people responsible need to be answerable for their decisions - at Chelsea in recent years there seem have been too many wanting to claim their share of credit (or at least bask in its glow) for the success of the club; Roman, Kenyon, Buck, Arnesen but at the same time appearing equally as keen to duck the tougher questions when they arise.

As for Grant, no argument that he is doing a fine job thus far, better than any of us could have either hoped for or indeed believed given his pre-Chelsea career record. He seems to be developing a decent line in self-depracating, dry wit which in time, along with results, will help win over the fans. But irrespective of how we express it, he has one hell of an act to follow in Mourinho. Success will surely bring him acceptance, but failure (relative to what has been achieved in recent years) may see him judged more harshly than he might have been under different circumstances. No-one is suggesting that would be fair, but life (and certainly life in football) is far from fair.

Grant has a number of tasks on his hands and shouldn't be judged until he has had time to have a fair crack at them; the attractive football goal needs time and hard work, not empty soundbites which will haunt him eventually if things do not go his way. He needs to prove he is his own man in terms of transfers, both in and out of the club, and to keep the core of the squad together and to rebuild the areas where we are lacking at present. And above all, he needs to deliver trophies - maybe not this season, but another 3-4 year gap between silverware won't be acceptable; the fans crave it, the management need and demand it if their goals are to be met. If he delivers, then he'll have done a fine job under very difficult circumstances and he will deserve credit from all of us; if he doesn't he'll have to take the fallout on the chin and more importantly, those who appointed him will need to take responsibility and act both decisively and fairly - whatever he is or isn't, both he and the fans of this club deserve that much.

Personally, i look forward to seeing your comments as oftentimes, they seem to reflect my thots...I'm not one to shy away from expressing my thots and i dont think anybody should make you...Nobody on this blog can boast of being 100% correct in terms of their conjectures and as such no one (or group) should claim monopoly of knowledge or experience...Tolerance is the key word here and should be observed by all if we are to benefit from the 'collection' of our expressed thots

The binding factor here is the love 4 chelsea as such our biases must come second all the time...Where points or issues raised seem out of place, they are expected to be countered by logical arguments and not vulgar abuses/insults...

So Evan, Godot et al...its not enough to just 'wish' Jose out of this site....you guys should drop your own thots/points in the basket here and let others see how your minds work...

Jose, I've diagreed with most of what you've said at some point or another and found some of your comments on my articles and reports to be inflammatory or just insulting. BUT .....I would defend your right to do that every day of the week because that's what this blog is about....thought and opinions that are different and spark debate and arguments. I would expect exactly the same if we were in a pub outside the ground. Bloody Hell, if me and ChelseaBob who I travel up with walked off after every disagreement on the club then one or the other of us would have a bloody long walk home after the game (75 miles!) - in fact Mrs ChelseaBob sometimes just sits there shaking her head and tutting at the 5-year old schoolboy behaviour we do exhibit when we argue. He very nearly threw me out of the car on Putney Bridge after I called Eidur a carthorse once, such was the affront to his view!

So don't go - I respect your views but will always disagree with you if I fee its right to do so...Hell even Henry can come back if he wants. Don't bugger off, stay and fight your ground.

I think Lamps is still a great player, so Jose, you're wrong about him :-)

I was always pro-JM but appreciated the reasons he had to go. I agree with JD, it was the nature of the departure that tainted the milk. The whole Jose Mourinho and Chelsea thing is like dating Jennifer Aniston if you look like me - it'll be great at first as everyone looks on with jealous eyes and wonders how an unfashionable, vertically challenged, slightly overweight, gobby bastard like me could be shagging someone so beautiful. And for a while I will feel King of The Hill, revelling in the attention and the kudos of being the one with her on my arm. But you know it'll end up in tears as others (some of whom you thought were mates) consumed with jealousy and a sense of injustice, seek ways to project her as mad, you as bad, her as arrogant, you as ugly, her as playing away from home, you as being excessively rich to keep her interest, her as evil, you as gay etc. In the end she doubts your motives, and you doubt hers, you start arguing at every little thing....you want a kebab, she wants to eat at The Ivy, you want a shag, she doesn't, you have a headache, she's drunk and horny, she's removed her beer goggles, you've seen her in the morning, she knows you snore like a JCB n a quarry, she likes your money, you still think she's there for your looks and personality. It WILL end in tears. The point is Jose was our Jennifer Aniston, we couldn't believe our luck as fans but in the end we started to doubt and the owner took the required action acting as the divorce judge. In the interim, the owner has replaced Jennifer Aniston (Jose Mourinho) with Margaret Beckett - a politician who says the right things and doesn't answer the questions...someone you're unlikely to want to shag even after a skinful, but who might just serve a need in a time of desperation and until Cameron Diaz (Marco Van Basten) or Tyra Banks (Frank Rijkaard) falls for our charms

I think I might need to stop taking the Ian Holloway pills now!

I think a lot of people on Chelsea blogs are panicy idiots who are used to winning the prem. They haven't been fans long enough to remember the times we were close but didn't win, or the times we were in the middle, and always hoping. Or the times when we were near the bottom, and praying to stay up. They don't seem to understand the ups and downs of football or the ups and downs of being a supporter. Some, like our little Jose, seem to misunderstand basic player movements, positions, and tactics. When he says that Lampard "countlessly loses the ball" and doesn't track back to defend, it is clear to me that he doesn't even watch the games. All players lose the ball at some point, but not all players get back and try to retrieve it. Simply put, I don't have enough pennies in my piggy bank to count the number of times I have seen Lampard give his all to get the ball back. If you can name another midfielder who scores anywhere near the amount of goals Lamps does while defending the way he does, I'll eat my hat.

And Kalou as our creative midfielder? Please. He is a shoot-first deep-lying striker in training. I remember at least 5 instances in the last game where he preferred a hurried, tight angled shot over up the opportunity to set up Sheva or Lamps, who often were in exponentially better scoring positions. Unless he matures and learns to see the pitch when close in the box, he is doomed to get his shots blocked, or sky them over the bar. Or hit the crossbar six yards out.

In summary, I don't think Jose's analysis matches his joy of writing. He is free to express his opinion, but I am also free to say that his opinion is uninformed crap.

A good game...could have been better, but given the circumstances (we'd already qualified as leaders of the group and valencia had their eyes on the results in germany) not much fireworks was expected from this match...

We missed DD but i'm still happy we were able to create chances...a little more luck and the result would have been more pleasant...

When i see Kalou, SWP and JC in Chelsea's frontline i know that pretty soon the goals would start flowing...just some rough edges that need trimming(especially for Kalou and SWP). Kalou has the attributes of Torres (pace and guile to go through defenders), its the calmness/precision in finishing off his moves that's lacking...I think we should give him time and the coaches should work on his deficiencies. SWP should just focus on his crosses, they are quite poor...

Good thing Cech is back and will likely be there for the weekend... I personally feel that one of our great unsung heroes is Cudicini...the guy's disposition beats me...he's one of the safest hands in the premiership yet we dont hear any fuss about him wanting 'regular' or 'first team' football...

I dont why...but i believe we'll pick the 3 points on Sunday

Maybe Sergio Torres who plays for Wycombe (no disrespect to Sergio).

Who next ?? I've heard him labelled as the next Henry (do me a favour), his similar attributes to Torres (I'll be buggered if I can see any). Maybe the next DD because of his nationality ??

The single most disappointing thing about him is he cannot finish. For someone who's primary role in the team is to deliver in the final third, he's also pretty bad at final balls. There have been exceptions (his flick on for Joe Cole against Wet Spam; his corss for Sheva on Saturday), but they seem to be part of a minority.

I dont know if I'm being overly harsh, but at the age of 20-odd, I'd think there were some things that can't be taught - finishing being one. It's the sort of thing you either have a knack for, or dont. And he doesn't. You can teach mentality, positioning etc. to a degree, but he's not a natural born goal scorer. Neither is he a dynamic winger.

I can't remember if his signing was anything to do with Arnesen. If it is, and things don't appear to have improved on the youngsters front (prime example was last night. AG could have played a number of fringe players), what the hell is he doing ??

I think SWP should aim for the half way line when he crosses because when he aims for the 6 yard box he hits the upper tier.

Anyhow let's not panic for Sunday, the Arse have as many injuries as us. And last night we were a tad unlucky; great save by Canizares from Lampard and fine shot from Joey that hit the post.

Wonder why all the apprehension about where the goals would come from on sunday...the team is creating chances and just need a little more luck...as the best managers in the world would tell you, winning is 1st and foremost about creating chances...

The defence is as solid as ever (if not better than before)...it is the gunners who should be worried about creating chances...

On the Lamps issue...even those saying that he isnt good enough, still acknowledge the fact that he does score goals...but it goes beyond that...Let me ask...if you were to chose between fabregas (who has greatly improved his goals ratio) and Lamps (whose ratio seems to be static/dwindling) who would you want in your team?

A midfielder should always 'want/ask for' the ball and be able to 'hold/carry' it 'confidently' until his attackers run free from their markers...

When opposition teams play tight defensively (like our away game against schalke) its midfielders in the above mould that 'unlock' such teams 'cos they are not 'scared' of asking for the ball and taking players on.

Saw how JC was drawing opposition players to himself and setting others free when he came in for Lamps...that only happens when you possess some dribbling skills and confidence to 'hold/carry' the ball...otherwise you'll end up often giving the ball away to opposition players or making harried passes to your colleagues

Summary is...Lamps is good, no doubt...but we could get somebody better to really add flair to our play and set our attackers freeeeee....

Got to agree with Alex on this one, Kalou has shown on a few occasions so far that he has got potential, he's scored a few goals - with both his head and his feet - and has created enough chances for his strike
partners to warrant a good spell in the first team.
And he is still young, he will learn in time and develop as a player, think he just needs to work on his technique because
that sometimes lets him down but apart from that he's pretty solid, okay he's not a World class forward at the minute but then again we didn't pay a vast sum of money for the guy either.
