Independent on Sunday, Nick Townsend: "After a match comfortably won with goals in each half, from Juliano Belletti and Wright-Phillips, who is thriving in a more central midfield role, no one should rule out Chelsea's claim to the championship."
Sunday Telegraph, Patrick Barclay: "In attack ... Grant had devised an interesting formation which was almost like the old W-shaped forward line, with Claudio Pizarro (later Anelka) at centre forward, Joe Cole and Florent Malouda on the wings and Shaun Wright-Phillips and Michael Ballack acting as sort of inside forwards. It produced some bright stuff, especially in a second half during which Wright-Phillips sparkled and scored, if less spectacularly than Juliano Belletti had done in the first."
Sunday Times, Brian Glanville: "Chelsea’s first goal, after 19 minutes, was spectacular. A glorious right-footed shot from 35 yards by Belletti, who had already looked sprightly and adventurous, ripped past a hapless Cerny and into the Tottenham net."
Official Chelsea FC Website, Andy Jones: "Anelka hit the woodwork in the 90th minute after Dawson failed to clear, his drive cannoning off the underside of the crossbar and back out. A goal would have been the icing on the cake, but for today, Blues will be happy with three points and another year without Spurs winning at the Bridge."
19' Belletti 1-0 81' Wright-Phillips 2-0
This was a tense and thoroughly compelling contest between two teams that might well be labelling themselves as “work in progress”. In the end the game was won by two pieces of superb finishing, but in reality could have produced more goals for us. All in all, a very good day out.
Yet another tough choice. Could have been Belletti for the wonder goal, Joe Cole for sheer work rate and danger factor, or Ballack for yet another commanding midfield performance. In the end I’ve opted for Shaun Wright-Philiips who it seems now has a comfortable Chelsea skin on him and is relishing the central midfield role. Take a bow Shauny Wright Wright Wright!
It was a weird day in some ways. I followed my pre-match routine like I always do, even to the timings. We normally have to queue to get into the wonderful American Café Bar on the Fulham Road for the obligatory Tony hangover cure of a Number 51 (egg, bacon, frankfurter, quarter pound burger, chips, chilli sauce, two slices of bread and butter and a Perrier with ice) but today we just waltzed in and were able to pick our table! The subsequent walk down the Fulham Road was unusual because of the scarcity of any fans. I asked two coppers if the game was still on and even they said they couldn’t believe how quiet it was. The SO bar was chillingly silent as I walked into the ground... yes it was 1:30pm... but even at that early juncture the hardened singers are usually getting their pre-match choir practice in.
Anyway, the game itself was not an end to end classic, but was a compelling battle between two teams with very different aspirations for the remainder of the season. The atmosphere at these big London derbies is by far and away the best and this was a day when despite the plea over the PA system for us in the Matthew Harding stand to sit down, even the stewards gave up in the end, knowing it was utterly fruitless. My feet ached, but this was a game to savour, with a result that had us smiling all of the 80 miles back to Portsmouth. With Arsenal dropping 2 points, Liverpool doing their utmost best to get Rafael Benitez sacked we’re still on the fringe of the title hunt and that’s better than I expected. Happy days!
Keep the Blue Flag Flying High!
Great Game and great spirit from the boys.
Loved your comment about Belliti and Carlsburg - will use that with my mates and take the credit for it!!
SWP - so glad he is making his mark now - could it be down to AG? Same with Ballack - or is it just Super Franks abscence?
I am not getting carried away though - I watched ManU yesterday and to score 6 goals in 1 1/2 is amazing - even if it was against the Geordies.
I too have a request to the team behind this site - there are often long periods between games and all I want to do is read about the Chlesea. Could you put up articles between games to discuss items from transfer rumours, Tactics, team selction or even discussing our hate for other teams and players (i.e. that twat Ronaldo). Would even like to hear about how Robben is doing at Real, etc.
Anyway - great article and again - can't stop cracking up over that Belliti comment.
God bless Roman's Blue Army
I hate this news!!
The Special One could be back. Jose Mourinho wants to succeed Rafa Benitez as Liverpool manager, and the former Chelsea boss has contacted owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett indicating that he would love to take over at Anfield next season. (Sunday Mirror)
Good report Tony.
Looks like the big 4 is now a myth and it's the big 3 instead. I've got a feeling that the title will be between Man U and us.
Don't forget a Rolls Royce is now a BMW so Ballack is better than a BMW, he's a RR may need to go back to your analogy department for a slight tweak.
I'm pleased we've signed Anelka and he was greeted yesterday as the arrival of a Messiah. However it's a close run battle between him and Berbatov as to who looks the most disinterested. Maybe he could wear a clowns mask to give an impression of being pleased to be on the pitch.
Ballack has definately been outstanding since his return from injury - clearly the enforced break has done a world of good.
I firmly believe that even though he was far from his best last season, we missed him when he was injured during the run in. I reckon that its because he's so good that he often looks like he's just cruising and therefore his workrate is just not appreciated.
Great result and a very solid, organised performance, made all the more remarkable when you take into account all the absentees.
Although all the long term injury problems of both this, and last season have caused us big problems, the upside is it's really helped our squad mature. We're now a very formidable side no matter who's in the first eleven.
Hmmmmm....
Continue like this, with a little finetunning...then i dare say... "woe betide any team that plays chelsea"
The guys again made me a proud fan yesterday...'bring them on'!
By the way, very nice article Tony. The ref actually seemed like someone out to spoil our fun, and i wholeheartedly agree with you that the club should make a case (using appropriate clips) to the FA (or refs association) whichever is appropriate...
I'm sure the temporary 'top-two' are already aware that the real threat for the title is coming from the BLUES!
Always Blue!
I can't speak for Nick and JD, but your kind comments about some more pre-match/between game articles have been noted here....in fact I did mention to Nick about it a week or so ago, time being the main constraint.
Nick/JD - a rota possibly to do some pre-match thoughts? I'm happy to give it a go.
previews of weekend games would be nice. it would also keep us much more active as far as the discussions are concerned. i concur. anyway, we did what we had to do. got our 3 points, and as someone said, to hell with the 4 horse race, its a 3 horse one, and soon its going to be a2 horse race. i dont think Arsenal can maintain this type of pace, grinding points sometimes. they are too soft. i look at this as a campaign between us n Man U
i dare say the quality of the report is as good as the quality of play at the bridge....a complete demolition job keeping in mind the last few good games the spurs have had...ballack sure is world class...but what when lamps comes back...i also thought that makalele was the player of the match..breaking up evry move which spurs started...but yeah..no taking credit off swp n ballack n belleti n the others...good goin blues...theres no big4 now...just the big 3 keeping in mind the awful match at the riverside..gosh..our college club cud give liverpool a run for its money the form they are in...lolz
Without a doubt the best match under Avram-ten Cate era, as far as team selection & subs are concerned. SWP is in absolutely amazing form & he should continue playing behind the lone striker rather than in right-wing, till Lamps comes back in the team.
I thought Abdul was very unfortunate not to score a goal in his debut. The Arse has dropped points as well. McLeish does it again against the French!
LOL @ "Carlsberg dont do Right-Backs, but if they did..." What is it with defenders & defensive midfielders & scoring long-range goals against Spurs?! Gallas, Maka & now Juliano!
Hate to introduce a sour note, but I thought Spurs were surprisingly poor, and didn't really give us much of a game. They looked tired. Their fans were far less noisy and fun than the Everton lot were; in fact I've never seen a less Derby-like derby, the first half was played at a continental pace. It was tense in the sense that any one-goal lead is tense, but on the whole pretty comfortable.
Of course fantastic defending takes most of the credit for that, Maka loses possession sometimes these days (he never ever used to) but his positioning is still uncanny: it's incredible how often he appeared with the ball when Spuds were pressing around the ege of our box. Berbatov and Keane were silenced with the minimum of fuss. Belletti ... already to my eyes pulling ahead in the Player of the Year stakes. He was involved in both goals and both of Anelka's near-misses too. Admittedly Spuds are weak down the left but he defended very smoothly when they did come that way. Just his utter relaxed confidence on the ball is a joy to see, and it gives the players in front of him that bit of time to make runs, come back into space, whatever.
One thing to add to the "Bad". What was with the "Poyet, Poyet, what's the score" chant?? Maybe it was supposed to be affectionate banter, but somehow I doubt it. Gus was a fantastic player for Chelsea and deserves great respect.
On Anelka: he drifted around, clearly unsure what to do, whereas Pizzarro was actually very busy and sharp with his control and passing. BUT -- Pizzarro never ever looked remotely like scoring, and Anelka nearly scored twice. Which is after all what you want from a striker (except without the "nearly" bit).
just another thanks for these match reports, and plea for any additional reporting you can manage between matches. Some of us old Chelsea fans (my first game was the 1970 cup final against Leeds) are now in far off parts of the world (Ohio), so there are relatively few Blues fans we can find to mull over a game with.
I'll have to disagree with you on the game Limetreeblower because I thought Spurs were not bad, but that we just patrolled them out of the game, especially up front. Hence the comment on our defence yesterday.
However I agree with you whole heartedly that the anti-Poyet chants also belong in the bad section and for that oversight I apologise. There was a chant of "We hate Poyet" at one point but as most people seemed sensible it died a pretty quick death. I refuse to sing against any ex-player unless they've bad mouthed us outside of the normal ex-player bitterness......oh and Andy Townsend because he's a twat. Lest we forget Poyet was great player for us and in the end WE sold him and he did what any pro would and went for the best offer available. What next....."We hate Wisey" chants because he manages Dirty Leeds? Well, you can count me out on that as well.
Superb match! Well done lads! It's all about our positive attitudes. Another 3 points in the bag and we are continuing to pressurize the top Arses and ManUtd.
Those short passes were fantastic. Well organized and they looked very convincing, esp. our defense looked totally solid. I'm sure every one of us did enjoy this kind of football.
Start to like the partnership between Alex and Riccy. But still believe JT's return would be able to shift the three of them on and off. With our defenders starting to build up scoring mentalities, such as Belletti and Alex, I'm sure this has been one of the greatest influence to our attacking football style in recent performance. We defended well but we also tried to push the ball even further.
The absence of usual ones made chances for the 2nd choices. Though I think even our 2nd choices (ie. Wayne Bridge, Ballack, SWP, JCole, Sheva, Malouda) are likely to be first options for other teams naturally. We didn't work as well as now last year, but see how we now fit in with each other. Same old question though: could Lamp fit in with Ballack, and Drogba possibly okay being with Anelka (vice versa), or Terry could be great with Alex? So Bridge looked more confident than Ashley, IMO.
One thing I do hope, is when our usual lads come back from their injuries, they will find themselves natually becoming normal shifts for Grant to use, rather than relying on only one or two "untouchables" cuz I believe there should be non-untouchables.
(like what if CRonaldo got injured, I doubt if ManU could still maintain their usual form.)
Lastly, I do do do hope Drogba would at Chelsea for good. Totally agree on Desailly's thought.
LINK
We should not sell Drogba. Hope by adding on Anelka and while he starts to perform and fit in, Drogba would show his sparkling performance he did last year ,and apparently, he would like to stay and prove himself a little bit more.
Go Blues!
@Clive
Yes i agree with you, i would like AG to stop trying to convince us that "the style of play has changed, we no longer play the LONG BALL?????????????" When did we EVER played the long ball with JM????? This AG is a very insecured man, very flawed in his character, what is he trying to convince us of????
OK I was there and I watched the MoTD, yes we played well, but i couldnt help tonoticed that Spurs
players where ever so nervous wheh they started the game. HISTORY repeated itself, we never lost to spurs in the premiership, AG only carried on the inevitable, I read somewhere "even I would risk to world champion if I managed Brazil team" very right good playeers with a winning mentality is a match for anybody, and AG "what a pathetic insecured man" is only carrying on the tradition. Hardly a win where you come from behind and obliterated the oposition with 1 or 2 substitutions??? Frankly i am getting fed up when he opens his TRAP. Spurs looked really bad , once you eliminate Berbakov that team has no depth in attack, and with carvalho in the form he is showing lately i think any forward would be eliminated, yes even C Ronaldo.
was he trying to be funny when he said in his interview "we in chelsea have bad communication"????
anyway lets see and wait.
Great review Tony, Loved the Belleti comment! I see it being a war between us and Man U for the title! If we can win our home games against The Arse,Liverpool etc we should be on course for the title!
BTW After the game AG hinted about buying a midfield player during the window (Perhaps because Sidwell is not quite cutting it?)
Always Blue!
@Marco
If you think AG is pathetic every time he opens his mouth you should try reading your blog posts mate.
«
@Mark
YES Marck I think the man is PATHETIC when he opens his mouth.
Maybe you do not see the difference
It is difficult to diferenciaste LIKE with LIKe.
Just read some your comments in this blog, and i should add some are also pathetic.
Period
Wow, what a game! Great result, great performance. I can't remember the last time I can actually say that about our beloved Chelsea. And I can't remember when was the last time I got so excited to see a player make a debut for Chelsea as I was when Anelka stepped into the pitch in the game.
Great review Tony. You guys who have been reporting on this blog have been amazing. I think this is the best site for all Chelsea fans and I don't think there are many rival's unofficial fansite that can match this chelseablog.com.
Now about the game. Well it was great wasn't it? I'm just so happy that we are doing well now. A special shout out to a certain Shaun Wright-Phillips. He was amazing. I always like it when he scores. It seems like every game he plays, is like a trial to him and I hope now he can just keep on playing well and enjoy his football, without getting carried away of course. He is a good player and unlike some other Chelsea fans, I never wanna see him leaves our club. Which brings me to my next issue.
2 words : Claudio Pizarro. Tony give him 7/10. I wonder if we did'nt win the game and the overall team performance was not that good, would you still give him 7? And now that we have Anelka, do you think - that's it for Pizarro? Is he just gonna be a bench warmer and only start for small cup games against small teams? How long the club gonna keep him and then sell him. Not that I wanna see that happen so soon because I always believe in giving people chances.
And lastly, once again Tony, great review.
I just heard that the brazilian Alexandre Pato scored on his debut for AC Milan, damn lol! Fariza I think that Pizarro needs time to adapt to his new club and is improving! As for his future with all the injuries we have been getting (Lamps,JT,Drogs,Sheva etc)
the spots will be there to fill for the Pizza Boy.
BTW The Ivory coast beat Kuwait 2-1 in the ACON! 2 of our boys were on target, (DD and Kalou-less of course)
Blue will always be the colour! :)
2 points to make from my view point. No. Credit where it is due this was Pizzaros best game in a blue shirt. He is limited in terms of what he brings to the side but his lay-off play yesterday was excellent. 2. Alex - composed peformace effectively marking Berbatov out of the game - he seems to get better every game - on current form it will be very hard on him to lose his place once JT is fit again.
And actually 3. Alan Wiley had comfortably the most inept game I have witnessed (this season at least) from a referee and this includes the mug lnesman who thought Kalou was onside the other week. He got virtually nothing right but the Malbranque, Makelele madness must have even embarresed him at the time and will stand out as the most sureal decision making on record. For those not at the game Malbranque, on a yellow card came through 2 footed on Wright-Phillips - somehow the ref decided against sending him off. Virtually instantly Makelele committed an identical offence - yellow card. Unreal and caused howls of derision even from us quiet ones in the east stand. I am amazed they didn't cover it on match of the day.
i also had to watch football first match selection last night, what an amazing goal from Belleti, absolute top-notch. sent a chill down my spine, it was that good!! he doesn`t score that often, but boy...when he does he really goes for it! agree about the tackles, why is it that so many refs seem anti-chelsea? they`re so quick to get their hand in their pocket to dish out a red card, when as tony rightly pointed out, the attack on swp went un-noticed. can`t quite believe how well Ballack is playing at the moment. he seems to have been invaded by the body snatchers while having his operation..he`s come back a totally different player than what he was before he left, not that i`m complainig, it`s great to see. make him captain or vice-captain?..not so sure about that. i ,for one, shall be over the moon to see both J.T and SuperFrank back in the starting line-up. yes, the Blues have been playing awesome, not screwing up our unbeaten record but there`s a sense of security when i see those two on the pitch, wonder if anyone else feels the same? was great to see Anelka play his first game, i`ll look forward to seeing him play a full 90 minutes. hope A.G plays them both together, not one or the other. only 4 points behind the lead at the moment...it`s still "do-able" guys!!! STILL believe the prem`s gonna be Blue.
Up the Chels!! xxx
[a pedant writes] Err, the ACON hasn't started yet, and although I know some startling territorial claims have been made about it in recent decades, no one's yet said that Kuwait is in Africa ...
@Marco
You must be very mad at yourself otherwise you would enjoy a win against spurs like the rest of us...at least pretend to enjoy it... You sounding like a sour person...Just wondering Tony could it have been Marco in the bad section that had to be thrown out???? Just wondering???
@lollipop
I do feel better with JT and Lampard on the pitch for a game. It is hard to explain but it is there nonetheless.
@Chris
I am in Ohio as well. Are you in the north or south?
Where are all the Anelka Boo Boys who loved disagreeing with me last week HUH HUH HUH!! lol
I thought he played well considering he hasnt even trained with the team!!
@ Tony = i agree great performance, except for the idiotic chants - i think they feel that its somehow funny and makes them a "big man". We had one who was told to shut up - he looked like phil mitchell on crack - he didnt take the criticism well!!
Who are we going to sign this week!
Carlsberg don’t make right backs… but if they did…Juliano Belletti would be 5 years younger. That's the only way things would be any better, if we had him approaching his peak, rather than at it / past it.
Surely he has to be worth a quid for first goalscorer every week. Seems to score a few for a RB, and the odds would be half-decent.
Good performance, good result, can't ask any more. All the furore about the ACN ripping the heart from our team and leaving us as a decimated shell of a football team have passed quietly (note : check out what it did to Pompey yesterday). Even the usual spouter-of-rubbish Mr Howard has a glowing (almost) piece about us and the performance in the Sun today.
Thought Anelka looked sharp, and did more than enough. Maybe the fact he looked a little 'lost' at times could be put down to the fact he hasn't actually trained with the team yet, just thrown into the squad on Saturday.
My only concern about Saturday was the squad as a whole. Anelka apart, the other subs were Bridge, Ben Haim, Sidwell (all defensive) and Carlo.
With 4 defenders starting the game, and Maka in the holding role, why the need for so many defenders ?? Why not pick Sinclair / Sahar instead of one of them in case we needed to score.
JT said on Sky yesterday he hopes to be back in 3 weeks, so we're only going to get stronger in the next few weeks. These are good times people.
Penultimately, my usual Valencia update. They lost again. David Villa didn't play, he was in the stands wearing a Chelsea shirt. Maybe.
Finally, on the 'pre-match' thread, I'm sure the authors are busy enough as it is. If there's anything I ever want to discuss / mention, I stick it on the end of the most recent review. Most of the post match reviews transform into other discussions anyway. Just my two penneth for what it's worth.
Great stuff, a hugely satisfying result as ever.
Any nominations for player of the season so far? I'd have to take Mikel and then Alex and then Belletti. Which just shows how badly we've been hit by injury.
Well done Tony for chucking out the anti-semite - it's actually a pretty thick line between banter and abuse and fortunately most of our fans realise that now.
As for Poyet, the reason he gets so much stick is a) he joined Spurs (can you think of anybody who has gone there who hasn't had stick, except possibly Clive Wilson); b) the relish with which he celebrated his goal against us in the CC semi-final, the result of which we never speak about. The combination left a bad taste in the mouth and suggested for all his legendary status, he never really GOT Chelsea.
Oh, and I'll say it: Ballack is Rommel, okay?
Oh, and talking of bad tackles, anybody see the one Carsley got away with on Saturday? Very similar to Mikel's, only he actually made contact with the player. Only got a yellow for it of course.
LINK
Looks like we're still interested in Miguel, with Valencia flying to London this week to do a deal to sign Diarra from Le'Arse.
We could sign David Villa too. Then I could stop boring you all by going on about getting him
Then I could stop boring you all by going on about getting him
Didn't think you'd mentioned it up until now Fifty... :-)
Great result all round with some superb individual performances too. Think Spurs might have been a different proposition with their first choice central midfield pairing, but their other key players (Berbatov etc.) were very well contained. 4 points off the top with the closest contenders still to come to the Bridge and a number of key players to come back; all getting very interesting... Mancs are looking in ominous form though. And it is nice to be dealing with two other contenders instead of 3...
Re the pre-match articles - all depends on our respective day jobs and so forth, but we'll see what we can do for you.
When the Mancs batter somebody, they stay battered. I still don't think they're as good as they were last season, though.
ManUSA did look pretty formidable, but then Newcastle are about as robust as a soggy cardboard box.
The only surprise is the floodgates didn't open until the second half.
Steve Howards piece in the Sun mentions how we're still producing results despite the absence of JT, Lamps, Essien, Drogs, Mikel and, to a lesser degree, Kalou (I jest - a little bit).
If you look at Arsenal or ManUSA losing the equivalent of those players, they'd be nowhere near the standard we are.
Which would be o.k if the league took into account who you're missing, but it doesnt. Hence we're third.
@ Fifty - a post without mentioning David Villa?
Snap out of it man!
On the other hand I hope we get him this week......I'd be as happy as an Israeli man handed the best job in English football!
Tony,
I'm going to give up - I'll start boring myself soon.
As I watched last night and realised he wasn't on the pitch, I actually allowed myself a nano-second to think it was somehow connected to him signing for us.
Then they showed him sitting in the crowd and reality smacked me in the face.
That's it now, I promise, no more mentions of David Villa until he signs for us or someone else.
Yes Fifty, we need our daily dose of your obviously worrying attraction and love affair with the aforementioned. He's not my type though, he's too short and doesn't have that rugged smouldering look. :-)
I know it's wrong but I am getting a sort of perverse pleasure in seeing the only club in England with such a rich and traditional history in so much disarray.
LINK
Surely this puts Rafa in the same boat as Martin Jol was earlier in the season? Can't really see how he can carry on if the owners are openly making statements like that?
Good article and a great game. A decent performance compaired with some recent disjointed ones.
Anelka is going to be a good signing for ua and i think will work well with Didi. As for Pizza boy, lets give him at least until next season before we berate him to much. I think he's got a decent touch and is a ball player then a out and out striker.
It will be great to see ManUre and Arsenal at the Brisdge to take points off them. This has been the more competetive season for a while i think.
It would be nice to sign David Villa, but i don't think it's as urgent as maybe another winger.
K.T.B.F.F.H
I'm loving it too, but what undermines Max more than anything has to be the fact that Klinnsman has no domestic managerial experience at all. He guided his home nation to a World Cup semi-final when they were hosts. Hell, even Steve McClown could (almost) do that.
I think he'll be there till the end of the season, and then he'll leave. Another season without the league, and the 'Pool will still not accept it's been a failure despite the £25m-odd on Torres.
Was told by a well-placed sourced before the weekend that Rafa is 'dead man walking' as Ranieri put it. Open secret in the media that he's being kicked out in the summer.
Does rather leave a large concern as to a certain Portuguese gent taking over at Anfield. ..
I can seem him doing it to prove a point to RA. Could be like Brian Clough at Leeds though...
JM has come out denying Liverpool - he wont do it - he wants to return to us at some point in the future. He will be at Milan next year.
@ Fifty - seriously i will have to write to Mrs Fifty if this continues.
How angry would you be if i said Villa was over rated.
I mentioned a while back the JM heading to Liverpool if the rumours are true may come back to bite us on the arse big time. I have been trawling some Liverpool blogs and the fans there seem to prefer relegation to... as they put it the "special needs one" taking over so much venom from them.
Again I might just get even more perverse pleasure if he does go there.... bloody hell what am I saying give me a slap!
He can not return and manage another EPL team for 2 years after leaving Chelsea, thats was part of the golden handshake, so it is only the press speculating. He will never come back to Chelsea as long as RA is there.
But I would have liked him to manage another EPL team, just to be able to compare.
QPR in the future??????????LOL
@ Clive - I would give you a slap but i get the feeling you might enjoy it! Wash your mouth out instead ;-)
'I have been trawling some Liverpool blogs and the fans there seem to prefer relegation to… as they put it the “special needs one†taking over so much venom from them.'
Yeah, I've just read some of them. Wow, they really loathe him! Even more than Mark does! I thought after knocking us out of a couple of CL semis, they wouldn't be so fussed but I guess those regular humiliations in the league took their toll.
Marco,
Come the summer, JM is free to take a domestic managerial job in England - the stipulation was for 12 months I believe.
Munkeyfeet,
You're entitled to your opinion if you think he's over-rated. I wouldn't be angry.
You could have a point, but having watched the likes of Kezman, Shevchenko, Mutu, Pizarro, Kalou etc. he can surely do no worse.
@Nicky Yes I might enjoy it, if you could send a few pics of yourself to Nick so he could post them on the blog ;-)
@Peter
Obviously not Peter, he's mentally scarred the vast majority of them with the league beatings. What I find strange is that they want the league title so badly, I think most people would agree that JM would be the one most likely to get it for them.
@ Fifty
You could have a point, but having watched the likes of Kezman, Shevchenko, Mutu, Pizarro, Kalou etc. he can surely do no worse.
Surely famous last words...what about getting here injured and ending his career a little too soon...
Jose,
Is that not a risk with every signing ???
Surely no-one can doubt he's a decent forward, my point merely reflects the fact we've had a pretty active conveyor belt of forwards, another one wont hurt.
Current Best 11
Cech
Belletti Riccy Alex A.Cole
J.Cole SWP Ballack Malouda
Anelka Sheva/Pizza Boy
Why is AG talking about bringing in new players?
Sorry Limetreebower The game was a friendly against Kuwait! DDs 30th goal in 49 internationals! Its on the chelsea website!
Keep the blue flag flying high!
Good, exciting match. Beletti's strike reminded me of Carvalho in the same match last season; we need an attacking right-back and we've found one in him.
Three weeks ago, after our 4-4 draw against Villa, most people had written us off, some idiot even touted Everton to finish above us (!) But let Man Utd and Arsenal write us off, we'll be around to pop up and surprise them.
More of the same please, Blues.
'some idiot'...lol
let manure and arse do the running...we'll do the winning
I have been reading this blog for a long time, and wanted to give my opinion, several times but due to my work I always missed it.
This time I have some free time so it goes.
I have been a chelsea fan for a very long time, in fact since I was 8, and I felt very sad when they dismissed Jose' Mourinho and replaced him with the unknown quantity.
I agree with many of the bloggers that write in here, saying the new manager is as clueless as a blinf beaver.
I am happy that the results are going our way, I watch the games here in CH, and do not see any difference in playing style.
Doesn't convince me what the actual manager comments after the matches. Comes across as a very insecured person.
As someone wrote above he doesn't need charisma he needs talent.
Jury's still out on Avram Grant from me. I know our results have been OK, but we didn't beat Utd and Arsenal under him. Fair enough, they were away matches and difficult ones, but still. He's a bland man, on MOTD on Saturday he didn't even realise Arsenal had drawn. His command of the camera is questionable and nothing he says interests me. Our football has increased slightly, and we're playing exciting footie, but we were never boring under Mourinho, no matter what they say.
And I'm sorry, this is unbelievably superficial of me, but having been used to Jose's lovely face for over three years, having to watch Avram Grant is a horrible stun. Ick.
@Fifty
I dont know but I read in the press that it is 2 years.
But whether 12 moths or 24 it is long enough not to challenge, by then he will be in another team.
My knowledge of AG and RA friendship is based on what i read, not on my presence or witness of their conversation, after all I do not speak Russian or Hebrew, but before I answer your blog, read this or go there and read it.
If I am correct and heard AG well after the spurs match , he said that chelsea no longer plays the long ball, I researched under the title, below, and to my surprise he is considered one of the "notable" long ball managers. Go there read it, it may help your knowledge about football, and the sly, sneak guy that this AV is. If this doesnt smell of hipocrisy, i dont know what to say.

An israel player about AG, after all he should know more about AG than me or you, read it
'Berkovic: Grant won Chelsea job in disgusting, disrespectful way.'
He told The Sun:
'I think the way Chelsea gave the job to Grant was disgusting and disrespectful. Mostly it is a story with a known end from the very beginning.'
' Avram have undermined the greatest manager of all time at Chelsea FC - the one all Chelsea fans admired with craziness and probably the most charismatic man in the football world today.'
'We are all familiar and know who Mr Grant is. Sometimes you need to act selfishly in a way.'
Is Burkovic in his words implying that AG is a sly, vile character?
'Way to go, Grant. You made it. There is no need to be a great manager in order to become successful with a team like Chelsea'.
No need to be a great manager with a team.... he has fantastic players, he even risks to be champion with those players.
'You have got money, good players and everything you want. All you have to be is a very good psychologist and you're very good at it.
and pots and pots of luck what is his hallmark he only rides on luck not skill'
Berkovic, 35, added: 'I have a feeling Grant will be successful but there is one problem. He will always be remembered as the man who pushed away Jose Mourinho.
who is going to trust this man (AG)? even players will watch their back.
You see there is a problem, is this problem that the true blues can not forget and forgive.
"It doesn't matter how many hours he spent on the phone talking to Roman Abramovich and the closest people to the boss".
(better still was person to person so you can study the body language of the person you want to impress)
'As for Chelsea players, I can understand their feelings and thoughts right now. After all I was a player myself.'
'It doesn't feel normal suddenly to have a new coach you knew as Abramovich's friend replacing one of the best managers in the world.
even Berkovic recognizes
'This is far from being a professional act and it's really hard to understand.'
'I guess Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and John Terry ask themselves 'Who is Avram?'
'But hey, Mr Grant, you made it big time. Good for you.'
The bottom line
When Avram Grant was manager of Israel and leading them towards the 2006 World Cup finals, fans put the team's impressive results down to 'Hatachat shel Avram'. This means 'Avram's arse', a reference to the huge amount of luck he enjoyed during the campaign, though it turned against them when they missed out on a play-off place to Switzerland on goal difference.
Again luck, luck ,luck
'Grant is a shrewd man who knows which side of the bread the butter is on, and through charm, fascination, manipulation and exquisite verbal ability and manouevring, befriends the right people at the right time – be they journalists, clerks, bosses or tycoons. In this way, he paves his way to the top despite being a mediocre professional at best.
But he prefers tycoons lol
Did you read the words: manipulation, verbal ability and manouevring?
and despite being a MEDIOCRE professional AT BEST.
Now if these articles are written by israel journalist and players, people that know him personally and have worked with him, I must be able to read between the lines.
Another characterist of a "successful" football manager, (who cares about achievements)
Making a good impression on powerful men has become his hallmark. He met billionaire Roman Abramovich after currying favour with Uzbekistan tycoon Lev Leviev, who was to buy a Chelsea feeder club in Israel. Grant then used his connection with the billionare Alexandre Gaydamak to get the job at Portsmouth last year. Abramovich says he wants Chelsea to win with panache, but critics have derided Grant’s tactics as 'too negative'. Didn’t they say that about Mourinho?
Always climbing the ladder with football success, have you noticed, always using people and trying to climb the ladder by manipulation, introduction, not by winning or achievement.
Thats why I reckon he convinced and manipulated RA mind to get rid of JM and give him the job, after all you do not have to stupid to fall for that, RA is not stupid, but he is human after all, and there is always one moment that if you strike it right you get what you want.
Hence the reason I think that AG stab JM in the back, and because RA must have been tired of JM, AG grasped the chance to undermine JM and to convince that he is much better than JM.
Read this too, and read:
TO DUMP TITLE-WINNING MANAGER.
'In 1996 he persuaded Loni Herzikowitz, owner of Maccabi Tel Aviv, to dump title-winning manager Dror Kashtan and give him the job and married to Israeli TV presenter Tzoï¬ t Grant who once drank her own urine live on television as part of a health feature'
well better drink the urine that the shit AG is trying to give us.
There is more:
What they say about him
'He is an illusionist, incapable of using a proper game plan and relying on luck rather than skill'- former Israel coach Shlomo Scharf
Shlomo Scharf is probably the only Israel manager with qualifications to manage in europe.
'Grant becoming Chelsea coach is the same as Neil Armstrong’s landing on the moon' - Ran Ben-Shimon, Hapoel Kiryat Shmona coach
well i must say Neil Amstrong landed in the moon lol
Another comment from a football man.
The reason RA threw JM away (using your words) is that JM is his own man, not a yes man, does and achieves things HIS OWN WAY, so quite right, after all he RA is the owner, so he replaces JM with a yes man, just like AG.
RA may be seeing the same as we all see, that the change of play has not changed, but at least now RA can dictate the players he wants , and TELL AG what to do, and AG just follows like lil dog.
I never claimed my judgement were based on "facts" only assumptions and reading through the lines from people's comments, people that know AG for many a year, ans I am going to tell you another thing, and this is a fact, by meeting some chelsea players in a particular disco they go to.
yes i have a talent, like most blue fans, that nothing has really changed, and that AG stabbed JM in the back, he was only waiting for the opportunity. I am pretty sure so does RA, but at least now RA can interfere widely without upsetting or falling apart with the manager, not like before that JM would not tolerate, so RA invented that chelsea was boring, and was not playing attacking football etc etc, all excuses to replace him with his clown.
regarding your theory, quite right is your own theory, like mine is mine.
But my theory is not too far from the truth, my opinion.
Now reagrding Anelka V Drogba.
Yes anelka maybe more skilful and a goal scorer as well, but Drogba is a more complete player and a better goal scorer, you just have to read what Anelka said about him.
in my team i rather have a drogba than a anelka, but since drogba will be leaving in the summer it is a good move to buy anelka, i dont know how mature he is now, but if he sits in bench because the preference goes to Drogba, then lets see how mature anelka is.
But yes Drogba is a mor complete player.
That's all
Marco
have a look at this discussion about avram's long ball claim!
LINK
avram seriously lacks football knowledge!!! he is a lot better and more acceptable person, when he keeps his mouth shut.
I'm not his biggest fan, but in his time at Chelsea, I'd hardly class him as a 'long-ball manager'.
And as anyone can edit Wikipedia, where's the credibility ???
You could add Arsene Wenger and Fergie to that list if you want to. We know it's not true, but if it's on Wikipedia........
I'm increasingly bemused by the stick Grant is getting from certain sections of the Chelsea fanbase; most level-headed folk have rightly adopted a 'wait and see' approach and have been pleasantly surprised thus far, but want to see that he has that little bit of extra nous to push Fergie and Wenger all the way. Only time will tell on that front.
But his biggest sin thus far in the eyes of an increasingly lunatic fringe seems to be that he isn't Jose. Hardly Grant's fault, is it? I recall reading numerous angry dismissals of Belletti at the start of the season because he simply wasn't Daniel Alves; most of the culprits have gone surprisingly quiet since. Unless we'd employed Ken Dodd, anyone following JM (and believe me, Grant had far less to do with Mourinho's dismissal than the conspiracy theorists like to make out) was going to be a bit colourless and bland, but this presumably is what the club (albiet that the transition was handled in a typically shabby manner) wanted.
Sure, he hasn't done himself favours on some occasions with the constant digs at JM, but he's been canny enough not to change things a great deal, handled a few potentially hot potatoes quite well and has kept us in the hunt for all the pots.
Seriously, I can understand people not really warming to him as a person (I'm pretty ambivalent towards him and I doubt he'll ever be 'loved' as a Chelsea manager in the way that Jose or Vialli were), but in terms of results under difficult circumstances you can't deny he's doing a decent job (with credit also due to Ten Cate and Stevie Clarke for their part in keeping things steady) - concerns remain over the longer term and his ability to go that extra mile, but right now - what's the beef that's driving you all so flamin' garrity and leading to a hunt for a load of utterly false guff on Wikipedia?

Some excellent comments by this PW75 chap.
Not sure about JD's claim that 'Grant had far less to do with Mourinho’s dismissal than the conspiracy theorists like to make out'. Going to interview Klisnmann in California for the Chelsea job (when Grant was still supposed to be DoF at Portsmouth) suggests he's up to his elbows in muck.
It seems to me that some of the postings here have different user names but would appear to be from the same person desperate to peddle their vitriol against AG.
I think someone might need therapy.
@ JD No way dude - his biggest sin is wearing a black mafia suit with the top button done up, yet no tie - was it stolen - NOPE he just has no taste - he also doesnt wear a belt with suit trousers - i fricking hate that.
However i like him - so he fucked over JM - name me a successful top manager - in football or industry who wouldnt eat their own children to succeed and be at the top - nice people never get there.
He played the game and he is doing well with us when we have alot of class on the treatment table or in africa!!
In the words of owen wilson in wedding crashers - leave your negativity at the door.
Bring in the Villa - damn you fifty - you got me on the band wagon now!!
The Klinsmann thing, erm... I suppose there was that Pete... :-)
Whilst Jose's position became untenable with Grant presumably installed as the buffer between him and Roman, the final denouement did appear to be relatively free of Grant's fingerprints. Actually, not sure whether that makes it better or worse really.
Mark - we can see the origin of all the posts placed on here, which is why I've expressed surprise as it isn't just one or two lone nutters as you might imagine, but quite a few people.
And Munky - his wardrobe does leave a little to be desired. More extra from the Sopranos than football manager, but you can't have everything I suppose...
Let's just wait and see what Grant wins. I'm not interested in anything else from him,. just winning, not how we play, just WINNING! and that means the league at least and nothing less, so as JD has said, let's give him until May and then we'll all have a good talk on here, that will be promised I can assure you by all of us. As to his manner of getting the job, dont anybody come on here including you JD (Who I have a lot of respect for in your editorial role and comments, which is one of the reasons I contribute) and especially you MARK! YOU KNOW and so do the rest, this guy has blood on his hands and dont try and deny it. We all kow it and to try and negate that because of a few results in simply wrong and inmoral and 90% of Chelsea fans would agree. So give him the chance but he will NEVER be forgiven and that's that.
Re my (poorly worded) comment about Grant's role in JM's departure; I was referring to the final breakdown between JM and the club after the Rosenborg game - as far as I can understand, Grant wasn't involved in the subsequent exchanges and events that led to JM's departure. What had happened previously is obviously well documented and as I've said on here before, the way the club handled the situation was, for me at least, ultimately far more of a concern than anything else.
@ JD
I like the way you think. I fbut only you could infect a few others out here who prefer to live in the anti-Grant era. There are people in this world who would rather see the dark even when the easiest thing to do was to use the light.
Grant is not an issue to me because my love is with Chelsea and for as long as Chelsea is winning I will have no problem... Some people out here got their allegiances all mixed up JM was just a portion in the mix required for a certain out put and not meant to take over the whole essence of the stew...
But however long you sing this it will not come to pass because like they say some habits are hard to break...
I do NOT bother discussing this with some blokes because some have even voiced their desire to see us lose because of Grant...
My moto remains Chelsea Forever Chelsea Forever Chelsea till I die...
Thanks SEPP
@Peter
A good article
If there are double entries with different names, sure the owner of the blog can find out through the IP number of the sender, I guess I am not sure.
Well sure this blog makes good reading.
@ fan in the USA
Avram is at the helm the best we can do is support him for the greater good which for your benefit is Chelsea. We already have the rest of the world against us we do not need to kill ourselves over non-influential issues.
On the Avram Grant support option. I think the premiership is hardest this season...4 teams on 39 points...4 teams on 20 points
Statistics show that although ManU and Arse are above us...it is the loss to these teams under difficult circumstances that have put these teams there...I am waiting when we can return the favor when we get to field our team as follows
First Half
1. Cech
2. Belletti
3. Ashley
4. Carlvalho
5. Terry
6. Obi
7. Essien
8. Lampard
9. Drogba
10.Ballack
11.Anelka
Second Half
1. Cech
2. Belletti
3. Ashley
4. Carlvalho
5. Terry
6. Essien
7. SWP
8. Lampard
9. Drogba
10.Joe Cole
11.Malouda
Am having that kind of time...
Score line
Chelsea 4 Man U 1
Now that is my April 26th 2008.
Oh I forgot to mention Arsenal...but yet again who is counting Arsenal...I think the focus should be ManU the only realistic threat...
I am going to love this season... JM or not JM,
@jose
I totally agree - i dont care if AG stabbed JM in the back - JM is of little relevance to us now. As long as AG brings us results and good football along the way i am happy. We can all piss and moan and dig up durt along the way but what is that going to achieve......nada. So put up and shut up - enjoy it while its going well and if at the end of the season we have no champs league or prem league then we can go from there.
AG has in my opinion done well since he came in - he may have stars but you have to manage them and make them want to play for you - he has done that - and no they would all do it the way they have just to be professional.
They wouldnt all play with the drive and passion if they didnt believe in AG - professionalism only goes so far!!
Sorry - the above last para doesnt make sense - that is what happens when you rush it as your boss is walking over!!
"Chelsea Football Club can confirm it has agreed terms with Lokomotiv Moscow for the transfer of Branislav Ivanovic.
"A work permit application has also been successful for the player.
"The transfer is now subject to the agreement of personal terms and passing of the medical."
quoting eyal berkovich and his words on AG is as relevant as quoting certain marco from chelseablog. the love between those two (berkovich and grant) is long time ago gone.
if you want to be fair, how us the whole picture...but i guess that some of the theories would not fit your mindset.
as for posting articles BEFORE matches - we know you guys are busy. for start it'd be enough to open a post with a match-up a few days before - date, place, teams - and we will do the rest.
Anyone know whats going on with Franco Di Santo??? BTW Many sites reckon we are favorites to sign "Dinho" in the summer, I think Carlos Alberto is a better choice!
CMON YOU BLUES!!!
“Chelsea Football Club can confirm it has agreed terms with Lokomotiv Moscow for the transfer of Branislav Ivanovic.
“A work permit application has also been successful for the player.
“The transfer is now subject to the agreement of personal terms and passing of the medical.â€
Yeah, we really need another defender! Unless of course some shipping out is intended, maybe Bridge during the window or Riccy this summer (the more likely option I fear).
Still if AG does get sacked this season he'll be the only manager who can claim it was because he did his top button up and forgot his belt.
I'm feeling a bit twitchy myself now and have booked time off tomorrow for a trip to Primark (is that ok Munkyfeet, if I go for their top end stuff) :-)
LINK
Tony you can relax now lol, It seems like W.B could be on his way to liverpool strangely if so I feel we should bring in Phillip Lahm from Bayern Munich!
Blimey.... I go away for a month, come back and Jose has started talking sense!
No-one in their right mind can really fault Grant's performance to this point. With only half of his top players available, he has steered us through a quite successful Christmas period. We are certainly far stronger than Arsenal and Liverpool at the moment and although we still have to catch Utd, I think it is possible ( and I wouldn't have said that 2 months ago).
I had the pleasure of seeing 3 games at the Bridge during my Xmas trip to Britain (Liverpool (CC), Villa and Newcastle) and the atmosphere seems to have improved since my last visit the year before.
Personally I don't think the shape of the team has been altered by Avram for the sake of it, but to cope with the loss of key players. Simply Kalou is not Drogba, Obi Mikel is not Makalele and as a result the shape changes.
Give the bloke a break..... Unlikable he may be in his Soprano's suit and no tie, however he is getting the job done on the pitch and as far as I am concerned that is the only thing that matters.
@ Greenlight
Ouch! It maybe that you have changed your mind frame and you are begining to think more realistically...
You must have left when I was having a go at Lamps...Honestly I still would love him to leave but as it seems he has pledged his future to the club although without signing...my hands are tied as I will have to support him... Since he has been out, we have all been able to see what a midfielder is meant to do through Ballack....create first and then score when the chance arises...
Interesting that Shevy's game went up in Lamps absence...
oh and I have been doing an own analysis on our Goal scores Shevy's stats stand as follows
Started: 11
Scored: 7
Goal to start ratio: 64%
Drogba's stats
Started: 14
Scored: 9
Goal to start ratio: 64%
Lampard
Started: 20
Scored: 9
Goal to start ratio: 45%
(Well he is only here because he is one of our top scores)
Just thought you would be interested.
@ Mark lol
I will let you have that PROVIDED you buy a belt and dont buy a black suit and a black shirt!!
If however you do - make sure you either stop off at boots to get some makeup or dont sleep for 3 days to ensure you get the AG bags under the eyes - it makes the whole israeli godfather thing more believable!!
Also whilst i cant knock his ability and the fact he carries on doing well for us - is anyone else getting sick of DD blowing hot and cold. One day he loves us - the next he has hated us for 3 yrs!! 3 days ago he couldnt wait to play with Anelka - now he wants to go to Barca and play with Eto'o!!
At least if he goes to Barca we have a chance of getting MESSI - please for the love of God, let him come to Chelsea!! :)
Jose.....
I have to agree that Sheva was really impressive against Villa and it is a shame he got injured.
Ballack (who I have always quite liked, despite last year's false start) has been in great form since he came back, and Avram is in for a few very difficult decisions when all are fit and back from the ANC.
You are still wrong about Lampard though! But I doubt whether Avram will hurry him back whilst Ballack is in such good form.
@Munkeyfeet
I've spoken with Avram and he's taken your points onboard.
LINK
That is an improvement, however that suit does look decidedly 'off the peg' in terms of the cut and fit. Surely a man of Avram's means could afford a trip to a reasonable tailor? There's a very good one on the New Kings Road so he wouldn't have far to go...
Funny how we win a couple of league games on the trot and it's between us and ManU ... but when we drew at home to Villa the Premiership was over, Arse were top and no one was going to catch them.
Maybe I just like being pessimistic -- after all, at the end of the season if things have gone badly at least one's disappointment is factionally offset by the "pleasure" of having been right. But I can't see us dropping less points than ManU between now and the end of the season. We seem to blow hot and cold (shaky against Newcastle second half, Fulham first half, snail's pace against QPR, quick and confident against Spuds) and from all I hear the ManU lot are more consistently strong. (I hate them so much that I can't even watch their segments on Match of the Day, unless I know they lost.)
That said, I've felt all along that a top three finish this year would be a good result amid all the turmoil. The most pleasing thing is to see the passing game clicking again after a year or so when it seemed to go awry. I still wish AG would stop implying that he personally invented one-touch football, but nevertheless, if he's managed to get the fluency in our game back to where it was when Maka, Essien and Lamps were pinging it around between each other and off to the wingers, I'll give him credit. And if Stevie Clark and Henk ten Cate are responsible, then AG gets credit for assembling a good staff and getting them to work together. That's only fair.
On Ivanovic: presumably one for the future. He can play all across the back four, so they say. It's hard to see anyone breaking into any of those positions at the moment, but in a year or two maybe it'll be him. Unless he does a Diarra and flounces off to some pointless middling club because they promise him he'll be their new hero.
On the Ivanovic front, I've heard in the usual friend-of-a-friend-of-a-person-in-the-club type way he is seen as the new first choice RB and will be straight in against Birmingham on Saturday.
I believe this is also in todays Independent.
Unless Belletti is going to be the first choice right-sided midfielder ...
I can't believe Belletti would be dropped on current form. Rotated with someone other than Paolo, maybe. But we'll see.
@ Mark - agreed - Belletti had one poor game in Europe due to trying to play football with a bad does of the ...ahem.....squirts, which must have been a bloody nightmare. very other time he's played he's been at worst slightly above average, but generally very good. I believe he's around 33/34 years of age so perhaps Ivanovic is one for the future. I am intrigued especially as I really want to see another striker in the form of David Villa signing.
*walks away to return his Fifty disguise*
Does rather suggest that Ferreira might be on his way in the not too distant.
@ Dickson
Maybe, Ferreira on his day can be magnificent, but this is an exception rather than a rule over the last 18 months. Maybe his star has faded.
As I said, friend-of-a-friend stuff, so there's little credibility to it (maybe I'll post it on Wikipedia though....)
Dont know too much about him. Lokomotiv are a decent outfit, and he now partners Vidic for the senior Serbia team. If he end's up as good as Vidic, then it's £9m well spent. Thing is, if he plays at CB for his country, surely we'll be more inclined to play him there, although longer term RB is where we have a problem - cheerio TBH and Paulo ???
And despite the £25m AG's now spent, he's 'expected to make two more signings before the end of the month' according to the Independent.
JD - it does look very off the peg - he needs to be given a lesson in how to look dapper doesnt he!!
My fiancee's dad is a chelsea fan as well and he always tells me how we were hated back in the 60's and 70's as we always had our team in suits and the northerners hated it. Someone should tell Grant he is letting the side down. We always had style.
@ mark - how long did it take you to find a pic with him looking half decent LOL - you will say 5 mins but we all know thats at least an hours worth!!!
I want to see a forward - lets show grant some loyalty RA - buy Messi and make us all happy. If not then Villa with messi in the summer as DD leaves.
@ Munkeyfeet,
As the old adage goes, we've got two hopes of signing Messi - Bob Hope and No Hope.
BBC Sport confirming that Keegan is returning to Newcastle...
Miracles can happen Fifty, look......
this is certainly a turn up for the book
LINK
@Munkeyfeet
No time at all. Went to Google image search and typed "Stylish Jewish gent universally adored" and he came out top!
Alternatively try "Avram Grant" and it's on the 1st page so it really did take about 15 seconds
LINK
Re Keegan, that's just ridiculous. It would be like you lot wanting to get rid of Grant and bring back Jose! Who could seriously want that.
Still, the old adage, "never go back". It's going to end in tears.
I could possibly understand bringing back a manager that won trophies Mark, but this...
Mike Ashley is officially several Newcastle replica shirts short of a full Sports World retail outlet. Or something.
Apart from thousands of geordies shouting "way aye man" at the appointement... what did he actually win for them?
Not sure Clive - possibly the "Best Fans in the World" title ((c) Sky)?
"Not sure Clive - possibly the “Best Fans in the World†title ((c) Sky)?"
I thought that title was reserved purely for those lovable scousers who play in red.
They have many other titles - the ones they sign about constantly and some other (rather unpublishable) ones too...
If we sell DD to Barca or Milan then we MUST make sure that KAKA or MESSI are a part of the deal!
BTW Ivanovic will be #2! I believe Belleti will start then one of the CBs will be taken off to introduce Ivanovic to the chelsea fans!
UP BLUES!
@ JK
The only player at Barca that would be worth dealing DD for is Eto'o. He'd have to be a part of the deal because we don't really need Messi (I don't think he'd fit into our system...Kaka is closer but we'd still be without an out-and out striker) and I don't think he'd be very keen to leave Spain. However, if they're looking to swap Eto'o, I'm quite interested.
Clive,
Is there anything beyond the Sky Sports homepage you wanted to show me, or am I missing something (was it Keegan coming back ??)
Mr Ashley has let his heart rule his head on KK, he's a good manager, but not the right choice for Newcastle now(not that I really care).
Would have been interesting to see what Deschamps would have done, given the chance...
@ Fifty - do I ruin your dreams with regards to Villa!! Nooooooooo (well Ok a little but only in jest)
Let me live happily deluded that we will get Messi. Remove DD and offer £10m to get Messi to come this way. Ronaldo Who?!?!
@ Mark - LOL brilliant - stylish Jew - that reminds me of the joke - Superman, a man and an intelligent blonde are in a lift - who presses the button - the man as the other 2 dont exist!!
@Fifty
Yes that's what it was... just making the point that Newcastle fans were probably dreaming he would return one day. So you may get your wish that Mr Villa will sign for us one day as well ;-)
Just back from Italy
and read that di Franco sign, what a good siging, that kid will go places, brilliant signing.
Just hope that he gels and accustom himself to the EPL, at such a young age.
KK appointment is a sign that Newcastle aren't really a football club, they're a pretend romantic institution run by a canny man who knows the easiest way to get them to part with their cash is to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Cos they ain't seriously going to win the league, so why not make the populist approach to shift a few more shirts (do you think that every christmas the geordie kids open their presents and go 'wye aye, thanks our ma, another home kit - i'll put it with the other 40.')
The equivalent for us would be to have given, say, Zola the job after JM and i don't think a single person advocated that.
Peter - I certainly dreamt of Zola returning, as I'm sure did a few others on this blog. In all seriousness - Zola with no experience would be at better than AG, and better than King Kev for that matter. Wasn't it reported somewhere before Capello was hired that Zola was due to translate for him, and possibly join Deschamps if he got the Newcastle job.
On another point - best Chelsea goal ever has to be Zola's flick through his own legs against Norwich - any thoughts?
...and repeat ad infinitum until they get Shearer; nowhere to go after that really, is there?
I think Newcastle could use Spurs as a role model for their attempt to get back up there with the big boys. Glen Hoddle was the populist choice and we all know how that ended, and only time will tell if Senor Ramos will succeed .
Come on guys, a bit of realism please.
Should DD leave in the summer (likely), Barca and Milan are hardly likely to part with their best players (who are younger) to land him.
Yes he's world class, but I'd have Kaka or Messi over him. As would Barca and Milan I reckon. He's more replaceable than either of those two would be.
Aye you are right Fifty - but AG needs to whatever it takes to get RA to sanction another £10,000,000 on top of DD to land Messi.
Kaka is more likely as he had agreed to come when we had ranieri in charge - it was only because silvio B cancelled it at the 11th hour that it fell thru. We had agreed personal terms.
Most unlikely 2 happen that.
DD is world class but so are, kaka and messi and younger, and in better clubs, at least in the Champions League.
New signing????
Franco DI Santo
@z one & only
Guess you go the names all mixed up...
I think the line up of players is becoming very interesting...The future is surely very bright.

nice report.
i know i'm new here, but - is there a chance to have an article BEFORE the match? some of us, who don't live in england, and are not attending the matches, are "in need" to comment on the matchs during the game. ;)
Yes Tony very good report,I was unable to attend yesterday so had to limit my game to Football First last night. Overall comfortable for us with a wonder strike from Belleti who really is proving what a good bit buying he was.
Ballack is now showing the pure class that he his, and dare I say... make him captain for the remainder of the season even when JT returns.
The only minor criticism I have... and I wish Grant wouldn't do it, is yet another dig at JM with his remark about playing less of the long balls under his leadership.
And I'm with biggs on this, it would be nice if one of you busy guys did a match preview piece before the weekend games. It doesn't have to be too long just enough for us to discuss possible team selections, tactics etc.
