Premier League: Manchester City 0 - 2 Chelsea

Sunday, 06 April 08, 04:14 AM · Comments (177)

Match reports

The Observer, Jamie Jackson: "Chelsea deserve a little of the stuff they sometimes lack - goodwill - for at least keeping the Premier League title race alive with this victory, which maintains the pressure on Manchester United. They deserved this win, though their performance was, like the match, hardly vintage. Still, with Arsène Wenger fielding a virtual second string against Liverpool earlier in the day who could earn only a draw, Avram Grant's team deserve credit for a surge that has not included a league defeat since 16 December."

Sunday Times, Paul Forsyth: "Vulnerable they may be under the guidance of Avram Grant, but Chelsea’s title hopes are still alive. An own goal by Richard Dunne and a more conventional strike by their own Salomon Kalou extended an unbeaten league run that stretches back to December and narrowed the deficit by which they trail Manchester United to just two points."

Sunday Telegraph, Derick Allsop: "Love him or loath him, no one can dispute Avram Grant has kept Chelsea in a Premier League marathon that was surely reduced to two contenders yesterday."

Independent on Sunday, Guy Hodgson: "This was a stroll on a cool but sunny afternoon for Avram Grant's team against a City side who have won one match in their last seven and who, apart from a 15-minute spell before half-time, looked like they cannot wait for the season to end. Slow, sloppy and dull, just about the only imagination anyone with Sky Blue affiliation showed came from the announcer on the public address system, who billed the start of the second half as "the push for Europe". Push for mid-table mediocrity more like."

Official Chelsea FC Website: "A third straight league win successfully places pressure on Middlesbrough-bound Man United for tomorrow after an own-goal and a Salomon Kalou strike sealed three away points."

The goals

6' Dunne (og) 0-1 53' Kalou 0-2

The highlights

It’s frustrating for fans to see their team being led into a decline by a grey haired man in his fifties, with a funny accent and dressed in a black. I’m talking about City of course. Sven used to know how to play away, but Nancy soon put a stop to that, then he discovered how to play at home but, since the early season of fortress Wastelands, it’s now open season for looting.

We received our customary gift of an own goal courtesy of Richard Dunne so, even though all our forwards were generally ineffective, who needs forwards to score when the opposition do it for us.

Carlo Cudicini had to pull off a great save from Martin Petrov and we looked like it might be a case of Fenerbahce déjà vu, receiving a free goal then giving it away. Another City attack and Ashley Cole had to clear off our line.

But we survived through to half time and not long after Salomon Kalou rounded the keeper in George Best style to slot home our second. Joe Cole replaced Shaun Wright-Phillips and this, in combination with City’s heads dropping, meant that we dominated the remainder.

Nicolas Anelka had his own one on one opportunity with the keeper but fluffed it. Two minutes later, from a fine Frank Lampard cross, he hit the bar and then for the remainder of the game spent his time in an offside position.

For the remaining fifteen minutes we played effective keep ball.

Another three points and another away win help us keep some pressure on Manchester United. However don’t be fooled by the result because our overall display was average but fortunately City were below average and, after our second goal, they became pathetic.

Player ratings

  • Carlo Cudicini: Kept a clean sheet and made one fine save - 7/10.
  • Juliano Belletti: Didn’t get forward as much as he should - 5/10.
  • John Terry: Needs the pace of Ricky alongside - 6/10.
  • Alex: Looked a bit clumsy at times - 5/10.
  • Ashley Cole: Reasonable plus a goal line clearance - 6/10.
  • Michael Essien: Rediscovered his energy. I did read that he was feeling sick after returning from Africa so I may have been harsh in my previous criticism of him - 7/10.
  • Frank Lampard: Decent game and is still our best passer — 7/10.
  • John Mikel Obi: Lots of short passes but has the unfortunate habit of passing to an opponent - 5/10.
  • Shaun Wright-Phillips: City bosses must have been wetting themselves laughing to see what they got £24 million for - 4/10.
  • Salomon Kalou: Average game but took his goal well - 6/10.
  • Nicolas Anelka: Several opportunities all fluffed and looked slow. Either offside or in a praying pose - 5/10.
  • Joe Cole (sub 52 mins for Wright-Phillips): Sensible substitution by Grant.
  • Paulo Ferreira (sub 86 mins for Belletti): Sensible substitution by Grant.

Man of the Match

Michael Essien - plenty of energy and improved passing.

Final thoughts

It’s a shame Arsenal didn’t win today because they need to believe they’re still in with a chance of the title when they visit Old Trafford.

Many of us are highly skeptical of our chances of winning the title, because we’re not convincing and United are, so we’re bracing ourselves for the disappointment of losing the title at some point in the next few weeks. Some of us would probably have liked us to lose at City today so that we can get the disappointment over and done with and the recriminations and post mortems can start in earnest.

But where there’s life there’s hope, and anyway it's always darkest before the dawn and it has to get worse, before it gets better so the game’s not over till the fat lady sings. A few more clichés and I might start believing we can win the title.

Come on the Boro!

I agree about Belletti, He was practically non-existent in this game and hes usually our most lively and one of the best going forward, Essien was good, getting better every game, City have 3 wins this year that says is all doesnt it?
Why didnt Ze German play today? Is he being rested for Fenerbarnsley?

We should have scored 5 today. We used to be so clinical in front of goal, but not anymore. I suppose I'm nitpicking, but really I think we won today because we were playing a team who are desperately short on confidence. I love this flourescent yellow kit though because it means we're playing away (we've been brilliant in the prem away) and it means a win basically. We should wear it all the time.

There was a great moment of complicity and understanding between Anelka and Frank when Frank had just missed Nic's great ball into the box....huge, genuine smiles at each other and good body language. Compare that to Bendtner having to trot over to Wenger on the sideline because Adebayor had just come on and obviously wouldn't relay the new plan to him! Lovely.
Kalou is still so frustrating with his losing the ball unnecessarily when he has options but then scoring a great goal.
I still don't have that feeling of confidence watching us play, especially when we ease off when we're up. Great "oh, almost" stuff from Cudicini & A. Cole but we shouldn't have been letting them get that close so often. Was watching with a Man U supporting mate (or can they ever actually be mates?!) who said he fancied their chances at the Bridge after watching that display.
Having said that, brilliant result, we're still in with a chance & maybe the Arse will get a strop on and beat them.

Great review Mark, but I'm afraid I disagree with you in one point, that is Anelka.

I think he created a fair number of chances, he cut through a couple of times, and he was unlucky to score once (the header) and I admit he was clumsy in his one-on-one with the keeper.

And as Desmond said, his body lahguage and gestures with the other mates were good, if DD is really going at the end of the season, I think Nic will raise to the job just fine.

You know what, I actuall thought it was an okay performance from us. I mean, it was not amazing but it was very professional. And I totally disagree with the Anelka one. I thought he was really good, but yes, a bit wasteful at times. Essien was Man of the Match definitely. He was amazing. Our defending wasn't great though and I did not like the fact the game was rather a little too open at times.

I dont think we'll win the title but hey, like you said, where there's life, there's hope...

Anelka deserves a lot more than 5 imo. He created chances and he looked really unselfish. Though another issue raised: is a striker good one if he's not selfish?

SWp looked shit! He should really go now. We have given him enough chances.

@Mark

Do not know if we were watching the same match...On current form between Drogba and Anelka I would play Anelka ahead...

The first goal hadn't Dunn put it away then Essien was sure to do so...

Lampard at 7???? He looked tired out there but hey I guess I would not have replaced him with Ballack who has been off colour of late...

SWP I totally agree there he should be sold! Totally hopeless...and he is 26...let us sell NOW.

Joe Cole brilliant...changed the second half...in my book he was the man of the match...although the other cole was a close second...

Not a brilliant match but who needs brilliant (save for Arsenal) we are in for the cups

Hey ho, shows how crap my predictions are then!

A good professional performance and the pressure on Manure today, although it's hard to see a failure against 'boro. i thought Anelka looked sharp so I think he's worthy of a higher mark, but SWP was bilge and deserves lower - he'll do well at West Ham or somewhere similar, his performance just underlines why Bentley would be a more robust better bet for SWP.

The Fat Controller lives on, but it appears the momentum for a summer 'promotion' is gathering.

Good review MARK and i agree with TONY, we should buy David Bentley to replace SWP. i like Shaun but he's lost his sparkle, think that's to do with a lack of match practice though more than anything. When he was playing regularly his performances were completely different. He's definitely wasted on the wing and would probably play better in midfield.

All in all i thought the boys played great yesterday and looked like they were enjoying themselves. We could've scored more but i'm very happy with the result. Only thought Belleti had a dodgy game.
The pressure's on Man Ure now and i can see them dropping points at Boro today. Utd have only won 3 of their last 7 games against Boro and Southgate's got his lads fired up for a win today...

Anelka played great yesterday and i was dissappointed for him that he didn't score. (he was my MOTM) I'd really like him and would love to see him get more play time than what he does. I agree with PHOBIA, if Didier leaves in the summer, we'll do just fine with Nicky in the team. It's obvious that A.G isn't gonna play them both up front at the same time if he can avoid it, so is he gonna start to rotate? I hope so.

HOW UNLUCKY were Arsenal yesterday?!!! That's twice in 2 games that they've been disallowed 2 penalties and twice thet should've beat the scum! At least it's given Wenger something to genuinely whinge about and i think for once the majority of the football loving population would actually agree with him..unless you're a thieving, dirty scouser that is!
He must feel like the World and his Wife's against him today..nice for someone else to see how it feels for a change!!

@ CLIVE

Read that article on Steve Clarke yesterday while i was at work. Hope he doesn't leave us but as TONY said, he's looked less and less interested with every game. It was rumoured, if you remember , the week after T.S.O left that he was ready to leave and i for one was suprised he didn't go then. As it is though, it's come out in the article that he was given a huge wage boost to stay and i suppose you can't knock him for taking it. Interesting that all these rumours are coming out all at once of Didier, Frank, Essien and now Clarkey wanting to leave when it's clear that Jose's gonna be back managing football next season. I don't believe Clarkey will go to managing a Championship team..what's the betting he'll be part of Jose's staff?

We're still on course for the Prem, which i STILL say we'll win, i won't change my mind on that one. In fact, i'm as confident about that as i'm confident that Horse Face will go down in the penalty area against Boro today..

Well done Chels. More of the same against Fener please!!

Not wishing to give Grant any excuses, but if our trip to Old Trafford had been a draw for instance, we would be on level peggings.

Any new Manager would have struggled to get a result in the circumstances before that game, so in short Maure were gifted the three points.

Lets hope Arsenal knock Liverpool out of the CL and take their confidence forward to OT.

PS; I don't recommend drinking red wine whilst watching nervous football on the TV. Hic!

To All the PESSIMISTS on this blog...

So sorry we won and manure managed to nick a draw!

These days, its usually dull here when chelsea wins (and/or when our closest rivals drop points)...except for the exciting posts from a very few true-blue hearted fans who still manage to shout above the din of pessimism here...

If i didnt know better and had not been monitoring events unfold, i'd have sworn that this was not a pro-chelsea blog...

Not to worry....AG has promised to bring the smiles (smirks) back to your pessimist faces and restore your comms skills by loosing to fernabahce on tuesday...that should spice some lives here i guess...RUBBISH!

>Mark..

I think the frontline was more fluid because anelka was very mobile and unselfish...when a team's attack is mobile and unselfish like we were yesterday, the tendency is for the goals to come from any quarters...that's one of manure's strengths...I hope AG starts him (anelka) on tuesday, DD should start from the bench as his selfish play cost us the 1st leg...Kalou should also start in place of malouda...

Always Blue!

pretty interesting to see us behind manure by 3 points (4 points in practicality due to goal diff). looking back to when we played manure at OT we were way out and even though AG has not been inspiring, can he take the credit?

it is an irony of the season... the irony i call 'AG irony' ...losses the easier cup and wins the difficult cups!! i dare say, we all can accept this irony.

anyway, seeing the injuries to key manure defenders put them in a position we were in last season and one wonders if the same fate will befall them....i wonder!

its an interesting closeout for the season and there is still more drama ahead.

I reckon there's a distinct possibility Arsenal will draw at Old Trafford..

Man Ure won't beat us at the Bridge. They'd better not anyway! I've got a few bets on with a couple of my red shirt loving family members and friends who say otherwise!

As EMMA says, Everton will probably be our toughest fixture..unless King Kev's lot do a job on us the way they've been playing of late!

McFergie's got his knickers in a right twist.
Saw his post match interview and he said something like; "Middlesborough aren't used to getting big crowds, so to have someone like Man Utd here or one of the other big teams is a big thing for them". Arrogant bastard!!! Snidey to the very last, very bad loser. Always has to stick the knife in at some stage instead of just admitting his team wasn't good enough on the day.

As for the game yesterday, there really wasn't much to it, was there? Cudicini should be applauded for a couple of very solid saves at the back--I'd rather see Cech back there but he's definitely reminded all of us that he is an able deputy. A win's a win and we definitely put on a better performance (and a more rightful title challenge) than the Arse (that team selection was both baffling and stupid).

A big thank you to Boro--now let's do our job and hope the Arse can take a point home from Old Trafford. Always blue.

The funniest thing about all the anti Grant jibes is that everyone thinks TSO would have done a better job. The fact is he would not. We would have lost to manure at OT with him in charge. We were seventh when he left and virtually out of the title race even at that early stage of the season. Now with just five games to go Grant has got us to 2nd and as near as have ever been this season to manure.

I agree that Grant has made some strange substitutions. Some compare them to Ranieri but TSO was not averse to making mistakes. For example, how many times did he beat the bindippers in important cup competitions?

The players must take some responsibility for recent hiccups and Grant must be given some credit.

Maybe its time to clear out those who don't like Grant. After all TSO used to let those go who didn't support him.

Then there's the Champions League...

Come on you Blues !

I saw the programme this morning on Sky Sports 1, Mr Large himself was there, as usual (Steve Curry) among other newspaper hacks, basically having a go at Fullbrook, saying he was a Chelsea fan..(what's wrong with that?!) Holbrook's response was; "No i'm not. I just know what's going on there and know what i'm talking about" He reckons he gets regular texts from Chelsea fans how they're not happy with A.G in charge, how we don't want to win anything with him there etc, etc, etc.

A less apt description than ' Puppet Master' for Mr Grant, I am yet to see!

If there is one thing Avram most definitely needs to work on, it is his ability to 'pull the strings' at the right time!

Big thanks to Boro and Mr Alves..... We are back within sniffing distance now, and if the players and manager are good enough, we can win it from here. As much as we have our reservations, I believe it is time to get behind AG and see if he really can pull off a miracle.

Goal difference people. Even if the Arse held a draw at OT next week, given that we win all the matches for the rest of the season, we still lie the same points as Man Utd, and they will win us with obvious goal difference.

If Boro won ytd, given that we win everything and ManUtd lost to us at SB, then we will be one point more than them. But now that they only held a point, it is not yet party time for us.

We were scrappy, until Grant subbed SWP with JCole, the other lads, esp. Kalou looked inspired immediately, I don't know just got this feeling. Weird. ANyways, should have been 3-nil with Anelka's pretty header.

Can someone just stop Ronaldo from playing, then I do think we might beat them and pick up the trophy.

To clarify, so long as Arsenal (or anyone lese for that matter) take points off Utd, and we beat them at the Bridge, we will win the league! (Assuming of course, that we don't drop any points along the way!)

The goal difference is only a problem if we beat Utd, and they win all of their other games.

"The funniest thing about all the anti Grant jibes is that everyone thinks TSO would have done a better job. The fact is he would not."

I completely and utterly 100% disagree with that.

He would have done. JM would not have lost in Turkey. He most certainly would not have lost the Fizzy Pop Cup Final.

He would not have ended up with draws against Villa and Spurs (especially being 3 - 1 up).

An o.k performance Saturday. Standard Chelsea at the moment. Nothing awe-inspiring, but job done nonetheless.

Lets hope Jar Jar Binks is ruled out for a few weeks after hobbling away from the Riverside in some sort of protective welly. Him and Vidic out on Sunday would give the Gooners a great chance.

On the Grant v TSO question. It is impossible to say where we would have been under Jose this season. We had a poor start under him and it partly led to the changes that brought Grant in. Of course, there were other issues, mainly his individuality and his playing style. But I remember him saying that the style would change this season. The poor results were a result of his adjusting the team to play a more open style. It was hair-raising for a while - anyone remember Birmingham at home? And though I loved Jose and appreciate all he brought to the club, I actually think it was his error in choosing to fight last season's campaign with a reduced squad, that was very light on back up in central defence, that cost us a third title. Also, his general inability to produce creative displays against Fat Benny's scousers in those infamous semis showed a tactical conservatism that was close to Sven's England failures. So, I'm not blind to his limitations. As for Avram Grant. Well, I just don't think he is leading the team in the way they need leading. We have a cosmopolitan squad of high-earning, tried and tested, international players, many of them the best in their position in the world, who have won titles and cups. They need to respect and fear their boss. I just can't see how they can take anything Grant says seriously. Our good results are chiefly down to the players applying the basic ethics learned under Jose. Keeping shape, defending in numbers from the front, nicking goals and wearing the opposition down through little wars of attrition all over the pitch - professionalism, in other words. Where Grant is influencing play, it is actually creating negative effects. like lack of properly drilled defending against set pieces. The much hyped attacking combinations and more fluid play are a myth. But he has some basic nous, obviously. He does deserve credit for where we currently stand. Though I suspect that if Jose had been left alone to develop his own style - let's face it, he wasn't given long to experiment - we would be on top of the league by now and very confident of winning the Champions League...against Man Utd, who he ably outwitted in last year's FA Cup final. A final word on Grant - what other club would have made such an appointment from such a position of strength? It's the direct equivalent of the Glazers removing Ferguson and placing a mate of theirs' from the North American Soccer League (or whatever they call it) who has had a bit of success with their local team and once led the USA to win some qualifiers (though even that would have meant coaching at a higher level than Israel). I can't help thinking sometimes that we always contrive to spoil a successful situation. We've been doing it since Tommy Docherty (who once suspended over half the first team before the crucial Easter programme for breaking curfew, when we were placed to challenge for the title?)

@Clive - not going? Don't worry, Alex doesn't know what you look like!

I've wasted 2 hours this morning trying to book the Everton tickets which I've now succeeded in booking by phone.

I was on the web site at 7am but the transaction kept failing due to an invalid charge amount on the credit card, even though the tickets are free and I wasn't prompted for an amount. Thomas Cook Travel failed for a similar reason. Chelsea have now updated the booking site with "Online Allocation Sold Out. Please Call 0871 984 1905." which is a white lie for "The online system is buggered and can't cope with free transactions so please call 0871 984 1905"

Anyhow the pleasing news for many of you is that Roman is going to stand by his word and move Avram upstairs and recruit a younger, better looking manager. As part of this process Avram has been seconded to manage online bookings.

Danny Broderick spot on. If only some of those who think Grant is so wonderful could argue their case so convincingly rather than just snipe from the sidelines.

Anyway, good, solid win for us as expected, and than chuckles as Boro do us an unexpected favour. Funny how shit United start to look when they get a couple of injuries in defence - if they had experienced the sort of problems we had, there's no way on earth they'd be top of the table. Just about everything that could have gone in their favour this season has done and they're still only just hanging on - this is not a vintage United side, but unfortunately they will improve a lot next season as they mature.

The title is still in United's hands of course, but this would be a good week for Arsenal to suddenly rediscover their pre-March form. Shame Sky have also chosen next week to start dicking around with our fixture list.

Yes good article Danny, but to pickup on one point with regard our creative displays or lack of against Liverpool. I think the ammount of times we had played them just reminds me of that old saying familiarity breeds contempt, I just think we both knew each others style too well. After all Rafa does set out his team to be defensive and play a spoiling type of game, and play on the counter, I suppose it does have similarities to the way we played under Jose.

But most of the games against them were close affairs as were the other games they played against Utd and Arsenal, I don't recall them being torn apart creatively, perhaps the recent Utd game there was an element of that, but nothing that stood out. Perhaps Rafa has changed his approach, in the recent Arsenal games their players do look fresh which is a big advantage at this stage of the season. We're having our debate with AG if he's good enough, their fans are just as heated with discussions on Rafa's ability and approach to get them what they really want.

Come on people, we've all seen how Arsene and Sir Alex want to beat each other. Of course Arsene is going in to win the game against ManUTD. Both professionals will want to beat the other come sun or snow.

At this stage in the season we must all back Grant. I personally think the man is a snake and can’t wait to see him out. But he has ‘guided’ our beloved team to a possible double and now it’s time for some support.

One thing I remember the boys talking about last season in the press was is on game at a time. We shouldn’t be thinking about our game against ManUTD, nor their games. We should be focusing on FenerBarnsley (great whoever came up with that!) and then on Wigan in the Prem.

Interesting dilemma for Chelsea fans...

Out of Liverpool and Arsenal, who do you want to come up trumps tomorrow?

The thing is, we have such a poor history against Liverpool in the Champions League that my initial reaction is for Arsenal to win.

BUT –

If Arsenal lose the CL, the only thing they’ve got to play for is the Premiership. They have an outsiders chance still, and hence following their CL exit they could go to Old Trafford and have a game of their lives, and do us a favour by taking three points of the Mancs.

So in that sense, you’d want Liverpool to win, and Arsenal to focus on the Premiership.

Ack. All this is assuming we beat Fenerbarnsley.

Thoughts?

Both keepers not in the best form (something to do with new coaches) but with Cech, we had one long run of games where we kept a lot of clean sheets.

On the other hand, Cudicini knows how to stop a pen, unlike Cech.

Liverscum will go through tmorrow. We know they can sit back and soak up pressure, and Arsenal, they'll go streamng forward leaving holes.
This one's perfect for the Scum.

Back to our own game though, I wasn't too pleased to see all the overconfident comments from our boys after the loss, as if it would be a stroll in the park.
This record of ours seems to have some thinking we'll go through no problem.

Fener have got an awful defensive record and have only won 2 of their last 16 away games, think the last one was againt Man Ure in the late 90s, so i'd say the job tonight is pretty much done and dusted isn't it? If all doesn't go as planned and we crash out to that load of toss, then i want to see an *internal* enquiry into match fixing, because that'll be 4 (if you include Spurs twice) disastrous losses this season (Barnsley and Fener last week) that should never of happened in a million years..

On Liverscum and Arsenal...if you look at it, in their last is is 11(?) meetings, Liverscum have only won 3 games to Arsenal's 5, so the odds are on Whinger's side BUT having said that, Arsenal SHOULD of already been 3-1 up going into the 2nd leg. It was only a disallowed pen and f**K up of monumental proportions by Bendtner which means that they've put themselves under more pressure tonight.

The game's at Anfield as well...soz guys but i STILL say Liverscum will go through later..they've got too much luck on their side.

*no inuendo MARK thankyou!*

50 stitches !!!!! That's not an accident, is bloody GBH (by TBH).

Very bad news.

Still, nice to see they're all committed in the challenges in training.

If only someone would accidentally unload a two-footer on AG........

Tonight we are going to kick The Torches (Feners) arses no prob. Hope Arse come trough from the other game, but the reality is that they look wasted and Loo will most probably go trough. At least that will give us a chance to put things right against them at last. Oh, could not sell TBH quick enough. Looks he is doing damage even when he is not playing

50 stitches - that's one hell of a kick. and surely that's even with his helmet on - must have been a boot right in the old kisser. poor bloke, he's really been through it recently.

we're not a lucky club, are we?

Ouch. And thrice ouch, whilst we're about it. Hope he recovers quickly, more for himself than anything else - the 2 injuries he's had in the last 18 months or so would be enough to rattle the strongest characters and make them reconsider their place in the game.

Ben Haim's contribution to our season doesn't really add up to much, does it?

Add that to AG's lack of, well anything really, and I'm beginning to wonder just how much the Israeli's hate us........

On a lighter note, nice to see a Chelsea winger turning a full-back inside out AND provide a telling final ball last night. Sinclair impressed playing for Palace last night, although his Anelka-like tendency to stand offside for 45 minutes of the second half somewhat detracted from his first half destruction of Stokes left back.

Drum roll for Mark.

Sinclair needs either a loan in the Premiership or a good run of games for us to see if he's got what it takes. I'd also like to see him playing as a striker rather than a winger.

That actually took me some considerable amount of time to work out. Mark, numerically speaking I fear we are cut from the same cloth. If the title does go down to goal difference, I think we should leave it to someone else to do the sums or it could become very confusing.

My only dilemma for tonight is, do I wish we get knocked out now by Fenerbahce, or suffer yet again at the hands of Looserpoo. It took me weeks to get over last years defeat, it could take months if it happens again. After all as someone pointed out, they appear to have the luck of the Irish in this competition, unless of course it runs out tonight.

JD, it's not going to take Carol Vorderman to work out that we'd be S-C-R-E-W-E-D (and two vowels left over) should the title come down to goal difference.

Alas, I can't see it, although their hiccup at the Riverside at least makes it less plausible they'll win the league on our patch.

On the Cech front, I say let him have his close-season now, then get back in pre-season a week or so early and banish all this seasons injuries. I want him back to the form he was in when we won the league. Either that or buy a new keeper.

Very true...

Agree about Cech - not a good season for him so a decent period of R&R prior to the Euros would be the best option.

If you were a fox being chased by hounds would you prefer to get caught at the first hurdle and ripped limb from limb, solely to avoid the anguish of the chase, or would you prefer to keep running hoping to escape.

Its the almost Balkan intensity of their need to assert some deeply felt sense of superiority built, you feel, on an even greater feeling of insecurity in a rapidly changing footballscape that has deprived them of their natural right to be top dog.)

I still think that playing with 2 strikers should be the way next season if are to get the best out of our centre forwards. I thought Anelka did pretty well but all we lacked was that extra man in the box to finish everything off. When Anelka drifts wide to create chances, no one makes the effort to get in the 6 yard box. Where was Lampard or Essien or Kalou? If we play a conventional 4-4-2, i think Drogba and Anelka will scare the hell out of everyone's ass.

We can play well without 4-4-2 and with Anelka up front on his own. Remember west ham away this year? Absolutely brilliant with the midfielders bombing forward and Lamps and Ballack combining well. We should take it to them tonight cos they will attack relentlessly so we should do the same and pick them off.
