Premier League preview: Birmingham City v. Chelsea

Friday, 18 January 08, 10:15 PM · Comments (26)

This weekend sees us visit St. Andrews for the first time in two years to play the other team that likes to call itself The Blues. For those with short memories, Birmingham City were our first game of this so far very interesting season. We won 3-2 on that day back in August and all I could do was keep up with it by text as I sunned myself in the balmy temperatures of Southern France.

The season promised much after that game. It was a day that sealed Glen Johnson's fate after yet another defensive howler, and built hopes with two of our newbies, Claudio Pizarro and Florent Malouda getting themselves on the score sheet. Little did we realise just how ineffective both would be after that. Malouda showed some more desire and hunger against Spurs, but Pizarro, despite being better in the same game still showed me enough to carry on believing he will not make it in the Premier League. Be honest folks, can you really say he’s better than Kezman, or Gudjohnsen, both of whom we despatched after deciding their usefulness was limited?

Some Chelsea player news. Frank Lampard is back in training and according to one of my Matthew Harding Lower pre-match debating colleagues walked through the hotel before last week's game and when asked when he was back said he hoped it would be for tomorrow. Even so, expect a bench place to start with. Nicolas Anelka is almost certain to start and maybe there’ll even be a place for Branislav Ivanovic if all the legalities are completed. Hopefully that will not be at the expense of the impressive Juliano Belletti.

Birmingham are amongst a number of teams that followed our lead in changing managers midway through a season when they seemingly sat back and let Steve Bruce depart for the arguably much harder challenge of Wigan. Alex McLeish has lifted the team although the form is still a bit up and down they have the unenviable record of having lost 12 Premier League games this season, second only to Derby’s appalling tally of 17. Players to watch are of course Mikael Forsell who no doubt will want to prove a point and Sebastian Larsson who’s stunning strike broke Spurs' hearts, but made all Chelsea and Arsenal fans jump for joy in McLeish’s first game.

Birmingham have not beaten Chelsea in six home league games since a 5-1 triumph in the old Second Division on 11th March 1980. Their last home top-flight victory over the London Blues was over 33 years ago, a 2-0 win on 2nd November 1974.

Chelsea set a new record of 64 unbeaten home matches in top-flight football, when they defeated the Brummies on the opening weekend of the season.

Prediction: I’m loathe to do these as I firmly believe I am a Jonah and will only tempt fate to deliver the wrong result, but the form we’re in and the confidence running through the team, along with the “Anelka effect” should see us to a narrow win. 2-1 to us.

If you think you might be a "Jonah" predict a Birmingham win ;-) then you can run for cover.

Lets hope Anelka gets a start from the off. If he's going to make an impression while Drogs is away, he needs as many minutes on the pitch with his new teammates that he can get.

I won't make a predictions, as long as we win I don't really care, what the score might be.

What are peoples thoughts on the back page news that SWP wants to go to Newcastle?
Do you think he does? Would he be allowed to go?

@Rob
It was reported that Kevin Keegan would like to have SWP back in his team, press embellish it, and the story becomes SWP wants to go to Newcastle.

Having read the Chelsea magazine and seen SWP's loyalty during much worse times for him, I don't think he's going anywhere. It's just media speculation and guesswork. They release loads of shite like this in a scattergun mid-season madness to make up for the lack of stories outside the window. Not forgetting the part agents play in using the media to advertise their "wares".

The fecking media frenzy about Keegan is just ridiculous. SSN is on the office and apparently 'Keegan took a training session with the players today'. Because that's unusual for the manager of a football team. Fark me sideways...

Thanks for working overtime and doing the preview.

Be honest folks, can you really say Pizarro is better than Kezman. Are you kidding, I'm better than Kezman, you're better than Kezman, my dog's better than Kezman.

Re Branislav Ivanovic; he hasn't trained recently because it's the off season in Russia so he needs a couple of weeks training. Also he got married at the beginning of the week and I think he's been concentrating on alternative ball skills and dribbling.

G'day
just like to say how much I enjoy your site. As a life long Chelsea fan I find the articles and comments interesting and enjoyable.
On the Anelka signing, my first thought was Oh no, but on reflection I have the feeling it might be a master stroke and maybe at last he's ready to settle down and show everyone his real talent (time will tell).

If Anelka starts as brightly as he did last week, I expect he'll get on the scoresheet. He should only be better after a week of training with the team.

After the way he's played the last few weeks, I hope Shaun has secured a place in the team so he won't be tempted by other teams' interest. As Tony said, if he hasn't left yet, he surely won't jump ship now. And to Newcastle? Ha.

Always Blue.

Also heard today that as well as trying to tempt SWP to a move to St James`, Keegan is also interested in signing up Wayne Bridge after he has apparently become unhappy at A.G`s rotation system, resulting in him hardly ever getting picked to play."Sources" report that Bridgey is especially worried now that Ivanovic has been signed and scared to death that he`ll be turned into a permanent bench-warmer. Seems these days that the guys at the Toon are attempting to turn Newcastle into a team constructed of Man Ure/Chelsea players...oh, and that useless t**t Defoe. Wonder if they`d put in an offer for Pizarro and Sidwell?? Maybe a buy-one-get-one-free deal?? Regarding the game tomorrow, don`t forget that Birmingham held us 0-0 last April and we had a fully fit squad as well, they won`t be a walkover but i predict a 2-0 Chelsea win nonetheless. Also seen on Sky Sports this evening that SuperFrank is having a fitness test, hopefully to play tomorrow.Hope so, will be good to see him back.

If youare at all worried about SWP leaving for ST James' Park, then read the Sun article!!!

Absolutely no facts whatrsoever, so I think it is safe to say, it is utter rubbish.

Nice to see a prview for tonight's (Australia) game.....

Unfortunately I have a sneaking suspicion that we may not get all three points, but I am happy to be proved wrong.

Not happy about the anti-Pizarro slant on Tony (and others) reports of late..... Althoug he has been ordinary, he is no worse then Sheva, Kalou.... and if you go further back Kezman and Sutton!

Give the man a break... I think he links up ok with the other forwards and is frankly ok as a fourth choice forward!

Fingers crossed for a win tonight, as I think Arse and the Mancs will both collect the 3 points on offer

Here's to Nik Anelka collecting a goal or two!!

One more thing.....

Listening to the CFC Podcast today, they note that Anelka is eligible for all four competitions for the rest of the year..... Might prove to be 15 Mill well spent if he can fill the gap while the Africans areaway!

I think that was one of the main reasons that we signed the fella in the first place but I agree it could well be money well spent and lets face it, if it were any other club after Anelka the price on his head would have been at most £10 million and at that price he could well turn out to be a bargain!
I'm excited about the Ivanovic signing too. According to Four Four Two magazine, in Serbia he is seen as the better of two centre backs for his country and when you consider that the other is Nemanja Vidic that is some statement!

tough game definitely...really glad to see pizarro score, besides that, i think he had a great game putting pressure on the defense and linking up very well, good passes and first touch, he definitely has improved...i think he deserves the Man of the Match award...hope to keep on seeing more performances like that.

Pizarro is a god and Chelsea legend Tony... and quite frankly anything you write from now on will not be taken seriously. As punishment you should be made to watch Fulham for the rest of the season. ;-)

That's it for Pizarro. In the league he only scores against Birmingham.

Noticed Anelka rated highly elsewhere - BBC live prem for one.......

Funny how some of you like to hate on Pizarro, He showed what he is good at (Supporting other players,Holding the ball up, putting the defence under pressure etc) I hope to see more performences like that later in the season, I hope Tony isnt lost for words :)

Very tough game definitely, knew it would be though. Not quite the result i thought it was gonna be but glad for the win in any case. Quite shocked to see Pizarro was the saviour of the day!! What`s happened there then?! Perhaps he`s been reading comments on this site, gave him the kick up the arse he so desperately needed. He looks lost to death 99.9% of the time, not knowing what to do with the ball when he gets it in his possesion....but good Gawd!! Was i glad he was on that pitch today? Yes i was.

Presumably with Pizarro's record we could flog him to Villa - they'd love him up there... :-)

Good result that didn't appear to be on the cards as the game went on; rode our luck a bit at times but 3 points will do nicely. That team in 4th place seems to be quite a few points behind now...
