Well, just three days after an outing to the sun drenched city of Istanbul where our brave/courageous or apathetic/arrogant boys (delete as appropriate) suffered a setback in the Euro Big Cup first quarter-final play-off against Fenn Her Barchy (as spelt in the subtitles I inadvertently activated during the game and couldn’t work out how to get rid of) we travel to the small provincial town of Manchester for a super soccer game against the lesser famed football club in the area. No, not Bury, but Manchester City.
It was just a couple of years ago when quite a few of us Chelsea fans were aghast to find out that the bald, spherical-headed mannequin (no - not Tubby Benitez) who masquerades as the Chief Executive of our beloved club, had allegedly accepted an invitation to spend the evening (ahem) with a swarthy dark haired ‘oldie but goodie’ (in my eyes anyway) called Nancy Del’ Ollio but ended up with the silky voiced serial shagger that is Sven-Goran Eriksson. Despite all denials it did look for all the world that we were looking at him as a manager, despite having just employed The Special One. What utter madness it appeared to be at the time... but... how many of us would accept the human Rampant Rabbit now if it meant that Avram Grant would return to his plush office in the executive suite of Stamford Bridge?
In many ways, Citeh are very similar to us, or at least were. Like us, they played football in the shadow of a far more successful club, and like us were perennial underachievers. Whilst their more famed neighbours racked up trophies like Kerry Katona collects invoices from The Priory, Citeh have had to live off of memories of distant FA Cup victories and even more distant top division honours. Until recently our honours records were strikingly similar. Of course things changed with the dramatic intervention of the Silently Smiling Oligarch, Roman Abramovich, with his allegedly, yet consistently unproved, dodgy history. Citeh now find themselves owned similarly by a man with very deep pockets and an equally allegedly dodgy history. Thaksin Shinawatra despatched Stuart Pearce as we did Claudio Ranieri and set about funding an almost completely new team. The result... mid table obscurity. But most Citeh fans would concede that progress has been made and that The Shagger has started to build something for the future. Having said that, anything for them is better than the regular relegation battle scenarios they’ve suffered for as long as I can remember.
So which Chelsea will turn up? The sad truth is that under The Fat Controller, no-one, least of all the team, seems to have any idea. Will we be spurred and stung by the midweek reverse, or will we slide into title oblivion with a display similar to the rubbish served up last week, or against Liverpool? The result is wide open in my view, because despite hitting a poor patch, Citeh are still capable of delivering body blows... just look at the double they’ve done this year over United. One thing is for sure, our earlier 6-0 hammering of them will be something they want to rectify, and despite the obvious disdain they and their supporters will have for yet another bout of triumphalism from their neighbours they will still want to win this game and gain position in the Premier League.
From our perspective I expect Grant to tick the big player boxes again, with Michael Ballack maybe sacrificed to appease Frank Lampard and our clone of Michael Essien with one of our off the peg right-backs, probably Paulo Ferreira getting the nod. Didier Drogba will probably be the lone striker as Grant dishes out yet more appeasement sweeteners in the faint hope that the big Ivorian won’t jump (a floundering?) ship this summer. As for the rest... well have fun guessing folks.
My prediction? A good chance of rain with temperatures dropping... oops, sorry... try again... Doctor Who will make a steady start despite the earlier start time... oops... sorry again... my match prediction... a dour game settled by a single goal will be the best outcome, but in my heart I feel this could be a 1-1.
There’s a shed load of information and stats on the BBC match preview page.
OMG! There's an article on the daily mail website sports section, an interview with Roberto Di Matteo saying he's in talks with Chelsea to return to the club as Coach. It's not clear whether he'd be working under A.G though.
What's everyone think? I heard something on Sky Sports News last night but didn't get the gist of it, as we had visitors round.
I SO HOPE IT'S TRUE!
Di Matteo was my fave when he was with us!
@ TONY
I want it to happen so much, he was and still is an absolute GOD in my eyes.
I remember thinking when i saw him score against Boro on his debut; "yup, he'll do!" His passing and long range shots were superb, he was wicked in midfield with Wisey, Poyet and Petrescu. Oh, the memories! Happy days!
Who can forget the fastest ever goal in a Wembley Cup Final as well? Was it 40 seconds or something like that?
I was gutted when he left through injury.
One word...LEGEND!!!
Petrescu was signed as a wing back but ended up playing right side of midfield in a diamond with Ferrer behind. Good thing too, cos I don't think I ever saw Dan make a tackle (and Chappy became one of my favourite ever players).
Scored some amazing goals did Dan. One against Wimbledon in the FA Cup at Selhurst, and a cracker against the Gooners in Vialli's first game.
and then we lost to man u and he fell out with vialli and never played again!
i used to love lebeef - he was a hardcore cenral defender - great long ball passer too.
vialli and then zola were the two i used to idolise though.
Tony,
Great, preview. 1 - 1 is how I see it, after we concede an early goal, play our way back to a 1 - 1 then hang on doggedly (in a non-Collymore way) for the last 20 minutes.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a recognised right-back at right-back, but with Avram in charge I wouldn't be surprised to see Billy Blood deployed as sweeper and Hank Top Cat as a marauding left winger.
Each game we arrive at sees me filled with uncertainty. Under JM, certain games came and went and I'd think '3 points today'. Save for the woeful Derby, I dont think I've actually been confident enough to say we'd win any games of late, least of all Wednesday. Most people had it down as more a case of how many we'd get, rather than if we'd win.
We need a win to maintain the slimmest of portions of pressure on Man USA but, more importantly ahead of Tuesday, we need a performance. Yeah, we played well in the week, but the finishing was the sort of thing I'll be seeing in my local amateur league tomorrow.
I'd go 4-4-2 tomorrow - Cech / Carlo; Ferreira, JT, Riccy, Ashley; Joe, Lamps, Essien, Malouda; Drogs and Anelka (for the love of God Avram, play him).
Give Lamps and Ballack half each. Probably remove the bound-to-be-useless Malouda for the bound-to-be-useless Kalou. And introduce the bound-to-be-useless SWP at some stage to show Citeh what they're missing. Or not.
About Robbie, we've been to his restaurant (Friends, on Hollywood Rd SW10, a few blocks from SB) a number of times. I remeber the first time we were there I asked our waitor what he thought of Robbie? He said he was a great footballer but as a person/boss, so so!!!!! hmm...
Great food and atmosphere mind!
ManCity 2 Chelsea 1
and good riddance that wanker of a manager.
Oh and great preview Tony!
As I said before at lhe very least we have the pattern of one shocking reuslt followed by two good results (wins) since the cup final loss firmly in our favour. Let's just hope it continies!!!
Oh, how I miss Mourinho!
@Tony
The Fat Controller :-) Lol !!!!! Well, I think he is The Fat Damage Controller!!!
By now the public has more or less totally turned on Grant. I can feel it, you can feel it. He's done, and he's not going to win anything. I would be surprised if he makes it past the halfway mark of May.
The sooner the better as far as I am concerned. Dressing room mutiny to ensue following a poor result in Manchester.
Leboeuf was an amazing player. I don;t think there was anybody like him in English football before or since. People get excited about defenders with reasonable ball skils like Rio or Toure or Carvalho, but Leboeuf was extraordinary.
After which Man U game did Petrescu fall out with Vialli. I remember when he got subbed in a league cup game and stormed off down the tunnel, to be replaced by some clumsy scrote called.... John Terry.
After falling out with Chelsea manager Gianluca Vialli after a defeat to Manchester United, Petrescu never played for the club again and was not even selected as a substitute for the 2000 FA Cup Final against Aston Villa. He moved to Bradford City for £1m that July and then had a spell at Southampton.
During his time in England, he was the answer to a popular trivia question: Name a Premiership footballer who shares a name with a TV programme. The answer related to Pet Rescue, a Channel 4 programme presented by Wendy Turner Webster, Anthea Turner's sister.
Did you read that Peter Kenyon is going to be carrying the Olympic torch this weekend? I hope some Tibetan monks takes him out.
Ha ha, that second paragraph is vintage Wikipedia. But no mention that he looked like Mulder from The X-Files?
Ten reasons to be cheerful.....
1. It's only halftime in the Fenerbahce tie.
2. We're still in the title race, as we haven't played Citeh yet!
3. We're lucky we could be supporting Rottenham.
4. Our home record is still intact, at least until we play at home next.
5. None of our players are as crap as Phil Neville.
6. Arsenal are in free-fall
7. Ronaldo is a show off and hopefully he'll get an Italian hatchet job next week
8. Wenger is a whinger!
9. Mascherano should get an extended ban for a frivolous appeal.
10. And F**k Off Liverpoo
@ PETER
Saw that on the net the other day, the decor's ALMOST as garish as Mutley/Nev himself..and his wife's OBVIOUSLY only with him for the money!!!
Petrescu started as a defender but ended up playing midfield/wing..man of many.. ahem..positions!!
@ CELERY
Did you ever meet Di Matteo or is he just a silent partner at his restaurant?
@ CLIVE
Ronaldo is a show off and hopefully he’ll get an Italian hatchet job next week
We have 2 wannabe "Capone's" on this blog...have a word with them!
I expect a win, Man-Shitty have only won 3 times this year and all their good players are injured Petrov,Richards,Hamann etc
@ LOLLIPOP
Unfortunately I never have met him. Apparently he also co-owns other restaurants across London, so I assume he is more of a silent partner.
We only go to "Friends" as it's so close to Stamford Bridg. I was told Cudi likes to eat there as well amongst others.
@ JK
I understand Petrov is available for selection tomorrow!
[...] The Manchester City vs Chelsea Match Preview is taken from Chelsea Blog from this link:- LINK [...]
I've also heard both Petrov AND Johnson will play tomorrow, only Richards is injured as far as i know.
@ CELERY
It sounds a cool place, pity you've never seen him there or met him, even though he's bound to go there. I'd go to pieces if i ever met him, i'd be totally star struck! LOL. Apparently, all of the Chelsea team go to Frankie Dettori's restaurant, so you'd probably have a better chance of meeting the guys in there.
@ LOLLIPOP
Yeah, it is too bad as he is a favourite of mine as well.
But I have been very fortunate to have met many of the players. I managed to catch up with them in Philadelphia at their hotel after breakfast one day and they were all so kind and approachable. I had my home kit with me and got 13 autographs on it that day. I was also lucky enough to have my photos taken with most of them.
I have one with JM (hands on my shoulder, hehee), one with Clarkey, one with Eidur, one with Carlo, one with Lamps, JT and bridgey, one with Joey and Duffer, one with Drogs, Petr, Baba, Jeremy and Smertin!!!!
Treasured for life of course.
Licky sod, I know..........
@ CELERY
I am SO jealous!!!!!
Eidur is another of my all time faves, i have fond memories of him and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. I'm especially jealous of your T.S.O, Lamps,J.T and Didier pics. I have a signed and framed Lamps home shirt on my bedroom wall which is my most treasured possession, him being my current fave.
Was hoping to meet the guys in May at the "player of the year" awards down London but due to unforseen circumstances i can't make it. I'm gutted about that but will DEFINITELY be there next year. I'll get some pics taken then. I've been told they're all great guys and are approachable by Robbie Earle but i'll STILL have to have vast amounts of champers before i start to stalk them! LOL.I've got a lot of catching up to do where you're concerned haven't i?!!
@ LOLLIPOP
I just got lucky that day and funny thing was with Eidur the bloody batteries in the camera went out and took the missus a good couple of minutes to get it sorted and Eidur was happy to engage in small talk with me for the duration!!!
I am just so happy I have one with Jose as I strongly believe he will be irreplacable! Just as Cloughie was back in the day.... :-(
I am sorry you won't make the "player od the year" awards in May but as you say there's always next year, and hopefully there will be a more charismatic manager in the audience for you instead of Toady, fingers crossed!!
Cloughie? Now there's a blast from the past! Could do with someone of his calibre at Chelsea. Wasn't afraid to...ahem...inflict a little discipline on his players if the need arose, or the fans for that matter!!
I'll DEF make the awards next year, if i have to walk to London i'll be there!
There won't be a different Manager, methinx..but no worries, i'd blank him anyways! LOL
Still say Arry Redknapp..He's fab. Ok, he hasn't exactly got the qualifications in Europe but so what?.. he'd leave A.G standing in a Managerial capacity and he manages to get the best out of his players. He's very respected, i'd give him a go. He can't be any worse than the gonch we've got at the moment!
There were a lot of comparisons made of Jose and Cloughie and rightly so, as they are both top draw.
I have always had a soft spot for Arry meself!! He defo pulled a miracle with Pompey, didn't he? He seems a nice man and a capable one at that.
And I certainly hope you are wrong about Toady being here next term. Oh, God pleas nooo....
I don't even want him upstairs as he can still cause trouble from there!!
I suppose we'll see.
Anyhow, I got on now.
Have a great evening and let's hope the lads will make us proud tomorrow!
Up The Chels.....
I gotta get on now..that is!
Sorry about all the typos!!!!!!!!!!!
@ CELERY
He did pull a miracle with Pompey and i admire him more than any Manager in the Premiership, we could certainly do a hell of a lot worse than him at Chelsea.
You enjoy your evening too, it's been great "chatting" to you, have found it interesting x
Won't be easy.
I'd like to think that we'll have a cakewalk in Manchester just like how we thrashed them 6-0 at SB, but something tells me it's going to be a bit grittier than that. Man City have been playing quite badly of late (drawing with Wigan and Bolton and losing to Birmingham City), so they could use this match as a chance to show their not out of it just yet. We have to do exactly the same, but for the top of the table. I reckon it'll be a gritty affair, either 1-0 or 2-1 to us, and Lady Luck might just be on our side.
Or maybe the Toad will play 1-2-7 or something, with Ben Haim making a special appearance and scoring 4 own goals.
Good points, Clive. I'd also add:
- Avram Grant's toadness reminds all men and women in the world that you are not the ugliest person in the world.
- Our captain doesn't dive like a swan at every given opportunity.
- Ronaldo and Rooney have sex with Mancunian sluts.
- Lampard and Drogba might. both. stay.
&
- Torres might injure himself diving tomorrow at the Emirates.
DD wont stay if JM gets a new club, As for us, I want Arshavin and Alves!
Apparently, Avram's well aware that nobody likes him but he says he isn't bothered. He says; "If i listened to all the bad opinions, we would've lost more games".
It comes after Kezman has critisised his managerial credibility, saying we wouldn't of lost against Fener under Mourinho. He says; "I don't care about all that. This club has gone a different way. They have put me in charge." Yeah! YOU SAID IT MATE!
What i find bizarre is he says he preferred what happened on Wednesday! Eh?! He really preferred that we lost a match after dominating fo 3 quarters of it?! I find that rather unfathomable..unless he wants himself to be out of a job at the end of the season as well!!
Sorry Avram but i'm totally the opposite i'm afraid. I would've preferred us to WIN the other night. We could've just sat back at Stamford Bridge, took it easy and defended all night. As it stands though, we HAVE to win or we're out. Just baffled why he said that. Baffled by everything he says actually!
I wonder what colour the sky is on Planet Avram?
He also says he understands Frank's reaction to being subbed on Wednesday. You and everyone else that is Avram! Pity he didn't realise before he made the decision to bring him off and just leave him on the pitch! Asked if he was to be disciplined he replied; "We will deal with it internally"...i think not!!!
Anelka should be in the starting XI this weekend apparently. About time. With or without Didier i've no idea. He never says does he? He just has the grin on his face and says; "I don't know. We shall see." then starts laughing. Why is it such a big secret who's gonna be playing? Would he have to kill people if he told them who'd be playing?!!! Aaaarrrggghhhhh!!!!!
Just firing myself up for a day of stocktaking..apologise for the mood, sorry guys!
I don't know if we should be relieved with the rumblings of discontent, or concerned.

Clive,
Not really a surprise to read, but I'd be happier if it were about any of the other staff.
I'd dearly love Clarkey to stay. Yes he remains from the JM era, but was also established as a Blues legend long before that.
If it were AG or Hank Top cat I wouldn't care.
£25m for Huntelaar is todays rumour. A lot of money for a striker from Holland. Especially considering the ones we've bought from there before......
Look at Clarkeys body langauge during all the recent games and it's obvious he doesn't want to be there. Who can blame him?
Apparently ChelseaTV last night was inundated with fans giving the anit-Grant message which my mate , ChelseaBob, said was surprising as they very often weed out those callers.
Jus how long can they ignore what we can all see?
Lets hope that Roman will take note from the phone-ins because this edging towards total implosion, and will take years to put right. But does this story smack of total confidence from a man who has the total backing from RA?

Todays team
Carlo
Belletti, JT, Alex, Ashley
Essien, Mikel, Lamps, SWP
Kalou, Anelka
Hilario, Ferreira, Ballack, Joe Cole, Sheva on the bench
Lets just hope that boring old team Boro can do us a favour against the scum tommorow!
1-0 dunne own goal, im starting to think we may have another 6-0 not
It just gors to show when you make a timely and proper substitution just lifts up all the other players on hte pitch.
A different team since!
How on earth are City still 9th?
Somewhat shaky in the first half, but lot of space and time for our lot today. Stil lacking the ruthlesness, given all the opportunities we had.
We played some sparkling stuff in the second 45... A lot of neat progressive play (helped by a serious lack of City effort). Should have had a couple more.
Really wanted Anelka to get a goal or two. A mixture of bad luck, and poor timing of runs...
We really looked like tearing them apart before Onuha got injured ( seemed a painful one - wish him well). SWP works hard and always tries to win back posession, but he hardly ever produces from the right wing.
Overall, it turned out veeeery comfortable. Too easy. Hopefully this doesn't slacken us for Tuesday night.
KTBFFH
Hey guys I am so sorry that we won - you must be devastated!!
Good day today.
Neither Liverpool nor Arsenal won.
Crouch scored (I like the fella a lot, feel really sorry for him too).
And we won!
we won! I'm happy we won. Only 2 point behind Man.Utd . :)
btw...I miss my Jose. *cry*
Lots of posts with prospect of Chelsea losing. Almost none during and after the game as we win comfortably. How disappointed you all must have been. Again. It's tiresome.

Loving your work Tony, I too am a bit worried about this - AG is just useless and its getting worse so i am never again going to say give him time or hey its football.....hmmm where have i heard that before.
We need to be brave - 4-4-2 with drogs and anelka up front. Put mikel and lamps in the middle with j cole on the left and essien on the right. Play our normal back four and lets dominate the middle. Have ze german on the bench with shaun, florent and kalou so if we need to change it we can.
With the lack of discipline in the team - with regards to no mistakes and knowing your role - we seriously lack the world class play makers to come on and damage a team.
Hopefully with a few new signings ala messi, villa, van der vaart and a new manager we can call this a transition year, all attend hypnotherapy and erase this misable time from our memory.
Great review Tony, as always you're right.
I also see Paulo starting on the weekend and Nicky on the bench. Also have a feeling SWP will make an appearance- don't know why, just do..would like to see Ballack, Frank and Maka in midfield. Cech could also be back from injury which should make you happy, TONY!
Micah Richards is injured, which i'm happy about. I think he's a great defender. Regarding Man City, they've only scored in 2 of their last 6 games and have won just once since they beat Man Ure in Febuary.
On the other hand, the Chels have only lost 2 of their last 18 league games at Maine Road AND we have the best away record in the Prem.
I'm both optimistic AND confident of a win, even though as Tony says, i think there will only be 1 goal in it. Who cares how many there are, as long as we win?
