The Independent, Conrad Leach: "It usually takes decades to build up an enmity on the scale that now exists between these two teams, but in their case it only took one match. That was last October, when Stephen Hunt accidentally collided with Petr Cech, his knee hitting the Chelsea goalkeeper in the head. It left Cech with a fractured skull and led to lingering recriminations. Cech was also out for three months and returned with the skull cap he wears in every game. To show what this victory meant for Mourinho, you only had to see him pump his fist at the final whistle to realise memories of the Cech incident are still fresh."
Daily Telegraph, Oliver Brown: "At a stroke Jose Mourinho ensured that Chelsea's return to Reading would be remembered not for Petr Cech or Stephen Hunt, but for his own tactical inspiration. Enmities were simmering at the Madejski Stadium last night, with Chelsea supporters well recalling Hunt's skull-breaking challenge on the Czech goalkeeper 10 months ago, but Mourinho brushed aside the sub-plots as he transformed an unlikely first-half deficit into a galvanising win."
The Guardian, Dominic Fifield: "There was real satisfaction to be had in success, not least because Cech's mistake had contributed to Reading taking the lead. The Czech still wears the protective helmet demanded by the injury he suffered here some 10 months ago, with memories of that furious encounter - there were two dismissals and as many Chelsea goalkeepers carried off on stretchers that Saturday night - still lingering. This game was played to an under-current of antipathy, the occasion punctuated as it was by a flurry of yellow cards."
The Times, Martin Samuel: "There are many that will never see the greatness in Lampard but, fortunately, Mourinho is not among them. He picks him just about every week and the logic behind this was made plain last night. Lampard gets into goalscoring positions like no other midfield player and his charge into Reading’s penalty area - almost to the edge of the six-yard box - changed the match. Pizarro won the first header, Drogba the second, but it was Lampard that followed the loose ball to journey’s end before slipping it past Marcus Hahnemann."
Official Chelsea FC Website, Andy Jones: "Going into the trip to Anfield on Sunday, there is plenty to work on but Mourinho will be relieved to leave this difficult venue with all three points in the bag, and a plethora of attacking options as Pizarro, Drogba and Kalou again impressed."

For his performance over 90 minutes, and for the aplomb he showed when asked to play right wing-back, Shaun Wright-Phillips.
As expected this game was vastly overshadowed by the events of last season. The vast majority conclusion was that both incidents were accidents. Hunt wrote to Cech to apologise and the apology was not acknowledged by Cech whilst Mourinho still claims Hunt is an attempted murderer. This lack of gentlemanly grace and common humanity has stopped Hunt from continuing his career without a huge raincloud hanging over him every time he plays. That's why Cech was booed.
Well said Clive - football fans can be capable of some pretty mindless behaviour, but that takes the biscuit. Unbelievable, in the words of Mr. Hansen.
Pleasing performance overall bar the defensive wobbles and some great substitutions from JM. Liverpool will definitely exploit the weaknesses in our back line though - be happy with a point up there if I'm honest.
I'm a lifelong Blues fan and have buckets of respect for what JM has achieved at the Bridge. I have to agree with Kevin Bremner's thoughts on how we as a club handled the whole affair. Frankly JM's comments were almost slanderous and certainly damaging to Reading and the players Hunt and Sonko. We could have lost last night due to JM taking his eye off the ball first half and playing Sidwell. In this leahue it's about playing your best 11 and not feeding off of mind games and playing inadequate players because it's their old team.
I start getting bothered with people still arguing on Cech's episode. That's well straight on bed! That's it! As for Super Franky for one who still doubts of his abilities, have a second thought. That guy is unbelievable, the way he works his socks off for Chelsea is just magnificient. Super Franky the best! Mourinho the Special One. Even if he claims he is no longer his tactics say otherwise
'Frankly JM’s comments were almost slanderous and certainly damaging to Reading and the players Hunt and Sonko.'
Diddums. Hopefully Hunt will now think twice before he charges a keeper who has both hands on the ball. And maybe he'll have the good grace to visit them in hospital afterwards rather than sending a guilt-ridden get well card a few weeks later.
At least now the Premier League have tightened up the inadequate medical facilities so other players lives won't be put in danger.
And do as a favour with your mealy-mouthed justifications of Reading supporters who think it's clever to boo a player who has almost had his life - let alone his career - ended. Nobody is fooled.
Thanks for the mention and yes lamps did have an average game yesterday...missed a sitter and scored one... For the record I have no beef with Lamps...it is ironic that you lot who push the pleasure button for Lamps fail to realize that Ballack too is a class player.
Great win.
Humble pie...hmmm probably I will have some...
Back to the real stuff. Reading is not a simple proposition and we all know that a number of teams will fall along the way when they get to that football part of the country...
If I read you right, we did have a bad patch where we could have gone three down... Maybe the luck has returned because there is no way I would have believed I was watching Glen playing in the back 4...
Another 50 "average games" then this season please Frank!
Most football fans in the world realise that Ballack is obviously a class player, so I think it unlikely that people who like Lamps are the only ones who don't. Everyone who knows anything about football knows that both Lamps and Ballack are class players. That's why they play for Chelsea.
Great great win last night boys! Already we have a better start than last season! Roll on the red scousers!
I bet after the MU Rowdie's some what crap start to the season, every ManUre fan will be quietly whispering out the corner of their mouth's on Sunday 'Come you scousers'. LOL, i'm at The three Kings for the game as there will definately be some Rowdies fans in there.

Push the pleasure button? Are we talking about vibrators? ;-)
I like Lamps, but I'm afraid he doesn't quite hit the erm, spot, in that way...!
JM has frequently reiterated his desire that his players be multi-role. I cannot think of any premiership team, with the possible exception of ManU, where the players so often perform out of their habitual positions. This gives the manager a huge flexibility to change things around, as we saw last night. It must be an integral part of the training sessions to practice for just these situations.
A year ago, SWP could not have played a defensive role, but, as is now pretty obvious, he is a much more complete player than when he arrived. His centres are stll sometimes a bit wayward, but he looks very menacing when he cuts inside - and he performed creditably at right back. I hope Steve McClaren has been watching him. He is far better now than when he played for England.
One of the unsung heroes was Mikel, yet again. Like Essien, once he has the ball, he seldom loses it, and his passing is consistently good. His tackling has bite and he dominated the central midfield which allowed Lamps to move forward at will. Once he matures a little, he is going to be a very special player. He looks worth every penny of the 12 million or thereabouts we lavished on him.
Still, the first half, it looked like we were still away on vacation. Hope this does not last.
OH MY GOD!
What was Pizarro doing with the rolly polly tripple back spin!!!

Ain't life grand eh! One minute i'm reading from the Birmingham comments our very own Jose Musumba saying Frank is average and to change him for even Mikel Arteta (don't make me laugh mate) and he pops up and scores a trade mark Frankie goal.
Jose i don't actually know how much football you follow but you might when roll off the tongue all your spanish players who can't tackle, head or score but can't simply pass a ball through think about the top three teams of our league. United have the quality of Scholes (ENGLISH mentality). Liverpool have the quality of Gerrard (ENGLISH mentality), we have Super Frank (ENGLISH mentality).Even Arsenal when decent had Viera (FRENCH but ENGLISH mentality and therefore the reason why he is useless in Italy).
Stop knocking Frank, actually sit down, watch a game of his and then decide if you STILL think he's average. The man is a Chelsea legend and irreplaceable whatever you or these other half arsed chelsea fans who think he's just average.
SUPER FRANK, you watch 20 goals a season in four years....it must be just luck!
I guess it is good that TSO came out and stated that NO ONE this season would be UNTOUCHABLE...
To some here it is spanish vs the English...and to others it is just being stuck on Loving Super Frank even when he plays like sh*t.
Legend or no legend, Frank has played great football for Chelsea but none of this has been in the present...
Do you realize that we play badly when Frank is not playing or worse when he is playing badly... Like I said I have no beef with Frank...I just do not appreciate poor performances because one thinks he is a good player with a couple of fans that have bought his images and placed them on their walls failing to realize it when underachievements are being delivered...
Interesting that Chelsea's game came to light when "Frank Lampard" was released by???? Obi Mikel who had to come on to do the donkey work in the midfield for two...
Did not want to bring this up to you blue blinded folk that Chelsea is bigger than any player...even those players that have held the team at ransom...but hell it is what it is...Let is be said!
I have berated Frank over the past two seasons. From his last two games and obvious weight loss his form should hopefully be returning.
Lamps is a pure attacking centre, asking him to hold and distribute short and long throughout the game isn't for him. He needs to run at defence and shoot from any possible opening. This gets us goals which i say shold be past to strikers to tuck away. BUT i suppose reality is goals win games. Having goal scorers all over the park is nerving for all our opposition so i'm slightly turning back to 'Frank the great' although he's got to keep up the form.
Keep it up Franky.

Dear pal, Mr.Guido aKa Blue geeza
the only English Creative midfielder you have mentioned is Mr. Gerrard from Liverpool...and there is no way he was appearing on my list of prospects when he shined us publicly... Please do mention another English Creative midfielder...I would love to be surprised...
Congrats to the team and the fans whose pulse and heart beat followed every kick in the game...
Regarding the humble pie...yes, i'll take a teeny weeny bite here...simply because there was an improvement in Lamp's game (eventhough he still cant win tackles and gets muscled off the ball easily)
Guido (Blue Geeza)...."The man is a Chelsea legend and irreplaceable"... Hmmmmm... legend, yes! but irreplaceable, definitely no!!! (not when we have essien, or even ballack in the team)
Also, I dont think its proper to berate the quality of spanish players (or players of any other nationality for that matter) cos for all the hype & puff, english players (at the national levels) have not won anything in recent generation(s) neither have their players excelled in foreign leagues...
Comments made here are based on individual perceptions from pple who are passionate about the greatest team in the making....CHELSEA!!!
Always blue!
Alex, One thing I might point out. You say what have English players done at national level. Well, what have the Spanish team done? About the same. Nothing.
Shaun Wright-Phillips should've scored, but Drogba's goal was just what we needed to pass Man U!
Did anyone see when Ronaldo was red carded, brilliant. :)
BLUES 4EVA!
the only English Creative midfielder you have mentioned is Mr. Gerrard from Liverpool…and there is no way he was appearing on my list of prospects when he shined us publicly… Please do mention another English Creative midfielder…I would love to be surprised…
Mr.Jose, if you are so much impressed by the public wave created by media that "Gerrard" is only creative midfielder in England then god help you. I would like to ask what is Creativity?
Is it some childish trickery on the field? Is it some selfish stepovers? Is it those 360's and roulettes? Is it all about flip-flaps? Is it all about "bend it like beckham" freekicks?
I dont think creativity has anything to do with all these questions I have raised. My definition of creativity will be creating chances even in dead ball situations. Creativity is all about pushing the game for ultimate prize i.e. goal.
Lamps and Gerrard are totally different kinds of players. Gerrard shows lots of emotions on the ground hence people think that he is more passionate than Lamps. It very much imminent even in goal scoring celebrations of both the guys. Gerrard runs like a whirlwind and dives showing as if that goal had utmost important. Whereas Lamps patiently walks to fans corner and raises his hands to sky, kissing chelsea badge.
If you are the chelsea fan then you must be knowing, Lamps has been 20 goal scoring midfielder for past couple of seasons. And he happens to be the guy having highest assists. That means he not only hits 20 goals but also creates other dozens of goals. Last season he had "dozen" of assists. Whereas Gerrard never comes near to Lamps goal scoring and assists. And if you are going by Lamps England form. Then let me remind you it was lamps who was Best English player in 04 and 05. Even though Gerrard was playing in the same. Its just a "hyperbole" created by media for Gerrard after fluke win in Istanbul that he is ultimate "savior" and "midfielder".
Legend or no legend, Frank has played great football for Chelsea but none of this has been in the present…
Just in the last match he scored one goal. Which ensured atleast a point on that day.
Do you realize that we play badly when Frank is not playing or worse when he is playing badly…
I believe football is team game. And if we are playing badly just because Lamps playing bad then it shows importance of Lamps in team.
Interesting that Chelsea’s game came to light when “Frank Lampard†was released by???? Obi Mikel who had to come on to do the donkey work in the midfield for two…
Do u understand tactics? Lamps was given more defensive role since Sidwell was playing aside (or Lamps was doing donkey work of Sidwell). Did u see any forward run until 45th minute when there was chance created by SWP. Lamps missed it since there was other defender came in the path of it which deceived Lamps. In second half Lamps was given more free role in midfield with Mikel being handed the defensive duties. And he scored just in 2 minutes.
Did not want to bring this up to you blue blinded folk that Chelsea is bigger than any player…
I completely understand with you on this issue. Chelsea is bigger than any other individual. But is Lamps going to media and telling everyone that "he" is the ultimate man in to look upon in pitch. He is doing what he is told to.
And one more thing, if anyone believes in gaffer, then this is what gaffer had to say about Lamps.
Lamps is Lamps. When he plays well he is best in the game, when he plays bad, he is the second or the third best.
I think JM's understanding of the game is unrivaled by anyone in the business. If he thinks about Lamps in this way then aren't we dolt enuf to discuss about versatility of Lamps for the club.

Again i failed to see the game, but would of loved to of course.
Good to see us coming from behind to win the game, hopefully we won't have to do that too often this season, lets see Chech improve as well. It's sureal that he made a fumble.
Come on you blues.

Just a side issue here something that really pissed me off! The booing of an ex player by the fans is something you expect, but the low life Reading fans that booed Petr Cech last night when he had the ball need to banned from every football ground in the country. Arseholes!
