Premiership: Fulham 0 - 2 Chelsea

Match reports

Sunday Telegraph, Andrew Warshaw: "Chelsea may not be firing on all cylinders quite yet, but even in third gear and without the inspiration of John Terry, ruled out with back spasms, they snuffed out everything their injury-hit nearest rivals could throw at them - then struck late on with a match-winning double blow."

The Observer, Jamie Jackson: "Mourinho played the narrow three of recent vogue, ahead of Makelele. But only Robben held his position on the left, while Essien and Lampard could not resist dropping deeper to pick up the ball. This caused Chelsea to stutter, and explained why Drogba and Andriy Shevchenko were anonymous."

Sunday Times, Brian Glanville: "With an important saving tackle early in the second half and two goals later on, one might say that Frank Lampard played a captain’s game. Yet it took a very long time for Chelsea to find the edge over a brave Fulham side that, by and large, made light of all their missing elements, and were perhaps ill-fated to go behind to a penalty."

The Independent, Jason Burt: "Jose Mourinho brushed aside the concerns over the anaemic form of Andrei Shevchenko and Ashley Cole, the worries over the spasms in John Terry's back, which may mean he misses Wednesday's Champions' League tie against Levski Sofia, and Chelsea's stubbornly uninspired football. Instead he hit home one unerring truth. His team are top of the Premiership."

The Times, Tom Dart: "While [Michael] Brown’s scampering, snapping style typified the Fulham determination that for so long counterbalanced Chelsea’s superiority, sympathy for him should be limited after he followed up his lamentable challenge on Ryan Giggs at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season by treading on Ashley Cole’s ankle.

"As far as I’m concerned it was just another tackle," Brown said. And the Black Death was simply a nasty case of the sniffles."

The good

  1. Another three points. It wasn't a great performance but given that Fulham were intend on stifling the game and would have been happy with a draw, a 2-0 victory was a good result. Earning three points when not at your best wins titles.
  2. Frank Lampard. He didn't put in a vintage display but you can't argue with two goals. He had the balls to take a penalty after missing four of his last five, and put the game beyond Fulham with a trademark strike late on. He also made a couple of crucial tackles. He's still not back to his best, though.
  3. Salomon Kalou. The young Ivorian literally changed the game. A 57th minute substitute, he earned the penalty after getting the better of Liam Rosenior down the left, who stumbled at the crucial moment and decided to use his arm to stop Kalou's cross. He was also involved in the build-up to Lampard's second goal. Impressive overall.
  4. Michael Essien. He wasn't as influential as he has been in previous games this season, but in a packed midfield he and Claude Makelele did well to counter Fulham's tough approach.

The bad

  1. John Terry's back injury and Khalid Boulahrouz's illness highlighted Chelsea's lack of cover in central defence. Losing Robert Huth and William Gallas during the transfer window might come back to haunt the team in coming months. Saying that, Paulo Ferreira did a great job as Terry's replacement. Terry, who looked to be in a lot of discomfort as he made his way to the dug-out, is travelling to Sofia for Wednesday's Champions League game after treatment from the England osteopath.
  2. Andrey Shevchenko. Not bad as such, but the Ukranian is still to find his feet in the Premiership. He had a great opportunity to score when a blocked Kalou shot fell to him but failed to beat Antti Niemi. It's only a matter of time.
  3. Michael Brown. Fulham's combative midfielder got away with another dangerous lunge/stamp which could have ended Ashley Cole's season. Reports this morning suggest the FA won't intervene after referee Mark Halsey insisted that he had already judged the incident (Halsey's attempt to appease Chris Coleman after the Fulham manager criticised his performance?). Brown has now got away with two career-threatening challenges this season after a two-footed lunge on Manchester United's Ryan Giggs at Old Trafford was only punished with a yellow card. It's likely to be third time unlucky for one opposition player this season.

Man of the Match

Frank Lampard. Salomon Kalou nearly got my vote because of the impact he had on the game.

I really hope we bring in a new central defender in January. The use of Paulo Ferreira in the centre may work against less immediately threatening sides like Fulham, but against the likes of Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal or Barcelona, it won't do. We can't afford to have all three of our centre backs on the field at once. It could be disastrous. Mancienne needs to be moved up, and quickly.

Still, good result. Finishing the month with Sofia and Villa shouldn't be so hard, unless we make it so.

Good result and back to top of the league! Is there anything else to wish? I think yes there is.
I hope Shevchenko gets into PL and start his magic. Salomon impresses more and more, though.

If you are a striker and the man behind is Lamplurd, you're screwed. Your only hope is on rebounds. Give Sheva a through pass. Remember what happened to Crespo(He's bangin 'em in SerieA now)?

He's is working on virtually no service, just like Defoe.

Hey henry.... u got a muffled brain or smthng? wasnt it lampard dat gave sheva the pass dat resulted in his classic goal against liverpool?...its just a matter of 'jelling' time my friend, b4 u lot (blue haters) start eating your words on sheva's seeming goal drought...if i were u, i'd be worried that chelsea's on top of the league at 2nd/3rd gear even when the so called 'contenders' are running at almost full throttle...

And for the true blues, we know d depth and worth of our team....and we sure BELIEVE!

Dear Henry,

You are a silly little boy with a mind full of fabricated venom.

Lampard has been the deeper of the 3 attacking midfielders, with Shevchenko playing just off Drogba. Lampard's role last season is currently being occupied by Shevchenko with Lampard playing deep. You wouldn't have noticed that the majority of the time Sheva has been slotting into midfield, in the "greedy" manner Lampard was last season because you're looking for more lovely excuses to be mean about Frank.

Lampard has been playing from deep this season, most of the moves you see him involved in have started inside our own half, his engine allows him to get forward when attacks break, unlike other players who have to "goalhang" because they can't get forward and back every time the ball breaks. Lampard plays deeper than Gerrard and still pops up more consistantly in attacking AND defensive positions. Hence why his actim stats are higher, he is involved in all the buildup and defense, and his distribution and goal tally have made Gerrard look like an amateur (a hyped up Joey Barton if you will).

I promise you, Shevchenko hasn't been playing as an out and out striker due to the injury problems on the wings. Mourinho has instructed Drogba and Sheva to both work as auxiliary wingers, which alot of the time, runs them ragged and makes us appear defensive because they are spreading the work of three players between three.

We simply have an extra central midfielder compared to last season, and at times no target man as a result of this use of one of the strikers at a time as the winger. Understand? (I don't know if I do :D)

Once Cole and Robben are back, Sheva will sit alongside Drogba instead of playing just off of him, and Sheva will end up at the top of the goalscoring charts with the Drog.

Even from the foreign attacking midfield position, Sheva has got himself into the right positions, but due to his ongoing recovery from a knee injury he has yet to find match sharpness and employ his predatory instincts as he is doing

Lampard has passed efficiently, intercepted frequently, tackled crucially and scored more than any other midfielders (as usual). Check the stats and then see if you can still aim your useless vitriol at the anti-Gerrard.

I meant the strikers are spreading the work of three attackers between two.

Ie. Sheva and Drogs do the work that Robben Drogba and Cole did last season.

An extra attacking midfielder has been slotted in as Mourinho knows that the midfielders can score too, but it leaves us looking narrow and disorganised at times without threatening our control of the game.

If Sheva was on form, it would be less of an issue as he would have scored the handful of good chances he's had and we'd be cruising.

Cole and Robben together = Champions League, League cup, Premiership, FA Cup and next seasons community shield.

The only team in the world that can get away with having the two strikers also functioning as wingers in a counter-attacking setup. :D

Henry tends to subscribe to the theory that Jose is entirely responsible for the 'chaos' that has seen Chelsea win back-to-back titles, along with global warming, Islamic fundamentalism, the rift between Blair and Brown and the scandalous shift by the makers of Marmite to squeezy plastic containers instead of traditional glass jars. He's probably even more pissed off because he can't really slate Drogba at the moment.

Jonathan..It hurt me so much to see the Drog wearing that armband. That armband has always belonged to true legends(nothing less), not cheats! That was profanity!

even my old man would score if you put him in the team.

The fact that your old man was responsible for you indicates that he shouldn't be allowed out in public, let alone anywhere near a football pitch!
