Premiership preview: Chelsea v. Wigan Athletic

Saturday, 13 January 07, 01:20 PM · Comments (13)

In response to growing press speculation surrounding his future at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho made an appearance on the club's TV channel last night to reassure fans and to tell them to ignore what the press is reporting.

"We all love Chelsea. The fans love Chelsea for a long, long time. I love Chelsea just for two-and-a-half years but I love Chelsea," he said.

"I want to give my best to Chelsea every day and I want to win always the next game and the next game is against Wigan. We have to be together to win that game.

"We have to forget the stories, we have to forget what the press is saying and we have to concentrate on our Chelsea because Chelsea belongs to all of us."

Mourinho's statement did little to extinguish the speculation.

The Independent and the Guardian continue to report that all is not well at Stamford Bridge. The Sun even claims that Real Madrid are lining up a move for Mourinho, with Frank Lampard also heading to the Bernabéu for £8.5m.

On the pitch things look to be improving. Arjen Robben and Carlo Cudicini are fit again while Petr Cech is in line for a return against Liverpool next weekend.

Ashley Cole is suspended, but both Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho return after serving one-game bans for picking up five yellow cards.

Unfortunately John Terry is expected to be out for a few more weeks.

Wigan are without their captain Arjan de Zeeuw, Andreas Granqvist, Antonio Valencia, Henri Camara and Paul Scharner.

Chelsea are unbeaten in 11 Premiership matches and in 55 at the Bridge, but are on their longest ever winless League run under Mourinho - albeit just three games.

The Blues defend a 100% Premiership record against Wigan with three wins out of three, but each of those have only been single goal victories.

Arjen Robben's injury-time strike sealed a 3-2 victory at the JJB Stadium on the Saturday before Christmas.

The more we keep put behind us all the rumours of 'all is not well, the more they come'. Heard about a board room disagreement with mourhino over replacing his coach Steve Clark. What in the world wouldn't the press say!

we surely need to start winning from today and forget about this so called storm. for one, it will be good to see chelsea without ballack. hope to see a better chelsea midfield.

coming y'all blues

We are one up after half time, thanks to that goal by Frank. Or should I say thanks to the Wigan's keeper.

Just the result we needed. Players are returning from injury (Robben has been a revelation - any coincidence that the last time we won was when he was last on the pitch?), our support for Mourinho is emphatically shown and the defensive pairing of Carvalho and Essien worked a beauty.

My only hesitation is that Makelele will be missing from midfield against Liverpool, meaning Essien will probably be unable to play alongside Riccy.

We need a solid defense against them, even if they did ship nine goals in their past two home games, but we also need the 433 which always works so well against the Scousers.

This is where the conundrum lies. Should we play Mikel at the back of the centre three behind Lampard and Ballack as we did against Wycombe? Diarra is not ready.

I'm sure the Special One will find a solution. :)

Good result...only managed to catch Drogs goal thou...will have to wait for the highlights...

All this talk about Ballack is unfair. I think he battles well for us in the middle and his movement is getting better and better.

I for one do not listen to the press especially the likes of the Sun...never really bother to read their sports pages. I think they are looking for a story and it is usually just hearsay... Do not mean to blacklist press but if you are reading these papers, sorry for you...They do not have the good of football at heart...They are out to promote Liverpool and ManU...So do yourselves a favour and abstaine...

Back to football. Scousers next...are you surprised why so much press is about Chelsea - trying to distabillize us with the hope of the scousers catching us...They forget we thrive on such pressure...please do give us a little more...you mourons...

cech back...now that has been a long wait but we are glad to have you 50 million...JM surely thought he was about 80 million...

Need to catch up on my drink..so cheers...

Also, I can't wait for Cech and Terry back. With those two back in the heart of our defence, the success of the rest of our season should be assured.

We're coping well enough without Joe Cole, but the sooner he returns and players stop getting suspended, the better.

Also, I'm glad we have at least one of our good goalkeepers back for the game. I've got a feeling Robben's going to be key for the next game as well.

All this press about us has got me thinking. It appars as though RA is at odds with JM - the reasons for this though are unclear and we can speculate till the cows come home. Some papers even says that this issue has now been sorted:

LINK

However - although I love Jose and think he is the best manager for us, at the end of the day he would not be here if it weren't for RA. After spending close to 1/2 billion pounds on buying CFC, new players and investing in our youth academy - I can feel nothing but thanks and respect for the man. He has changed our club forever and so far it has only been for the best.

If JM leaving means RA is a happier man - then so am I. No-one is biger then the club and I do feel that as long as we bring in a good replacment the lose of JM is not that bad. Yes - i rate him as the BEST manager ever to manage CFC and one of the best EVER in the History of Football. That said - RA is our godfather - he comes to every home game and I really do beleive that he loves Chelsea. He has a passion to win and win with style (hence buying A.shevchenko).

I do hope he learns to listen to his manager rather then his advisors (who obviously make good money every time they convince him to buy somone new) - but really - I just want RA. As long as he stays with us for the next 15 -20 years then we have nothing to fear - but fear itself. Don't mean to be cheesy - but fuck Jose when we can bring in Lippi/ Capello - maybe even J.Cryuff or Rikjard etc.

Now is the time to get behind the team/ manager and the board - we are fighting for the same goal. Now is the time for JM to assure the fans where his heart lies - if it is not with us - then fine - thanks for 3 great seaons and we wish you all the best. With RA - we can rest assured that a fantastic replacment will be found and more tophies will be heading our way.

Life is tough at the bridge - but it is never easy when you have the culture of success that we have formed at the fucking CFC!!!

God bless Roman's Blue Army - and his General's if they are on song!!

Granted, I don't live in England and haven't experienced the "frenzy" of the media, but the author of a story like this:

should have their hands chopped off for dispecable lies told in that story.

Mansur, thanks for that piece, and without a hint of a doubt, the conclusions are unwarranted. Maybe some may be true (as said by JM), i am of the opinion it is exaggerated and of no good intension.

the reason for all this may not be far from 'sheva' being the fact we bought him for 30m quid and placed him on the bench of recent. if he had being a sensation, there would have been less of the speculation.

To be fair to the club also, buying expensive players (sheva, SWP) and keeping on the bench does not feel right. its sheer waste of money and some where we need to draw a line to it gradually. We are seen as money bags and teams cash in on us. we have to find a way to get good players at good/realistic prices.

There is no doubt that JM is unhappy, the reason we really don't know. Just hoping that not a lot of water has passed under the bridge.

To the next match against Liverpool, the proposed coming back of Cech, JT is sure to give us a lot of confidence and with Robben on the wing play we should get 3 points, cause playing wide is the only way to beat Liverpool as demonstrated by Airline FC of Qatar.

Enjoyed yesterday a great deal - an article is being brewed.

TrueBLueCFC - you said "Don’t mean to be cheesy - but fuck Jose when we can bring in Lippi/ Capello - maybe even J.Cryuff or Rikjard etc."

Hmmm, Lippi I am unsure about, but Capello is a busted flush as his miserable tenure at Real Madrid is proving. Cruyff is an anti-Chelsea shitneck and Id sooner wear a red and white shirt than have that poisoned bastard - Rijkard would be interesting as he seemed a cool customer until his "chucking the toys from his pram" episode after the game in Barca where we showed we would not be bullied into defeat. I think JM should (and will) stay, but if he did go then replacing him with Rijkard might work, as might Deschamps. But here's a twisty thought

Mark Hughes anyone?

Christ, if Roman wants 'attractive' football I don't know why he'd be sniffing in Capello's direction!
