Premiership review: Chelsea 3 - 0 Blackburn Rovers

Match reports

Daily Telegraph, Henry Winter: "Chelsea looked a real team, more of the unstoppable machine of recent years. Michael Essien was again a rock in defence, Lassana Diarra again shone at right-back, while Lampard ran midfield. Even those controversial recruits, Michael Ballack and Andrei Shevchenko, contributed gamely, and Shevchenko even received a warm embrace from Mourinho when substituted."

The Independent, Sam Wallace: "They still have Manchester United within their sights, but on the night the transfer window closed the Chelsea manager's depleted squad are yet another man down. The crowd in Stamford Bridge winced at Ashley Cole's bizarre self-inflicted second-half tumble and the player himself was left fearing the very worst."

The Guardian, Jon Brodkin: "A comprehensive Chelsea win ought to have provided pure pleasure for Jose Mourinho as he tries to catch Manchester United but his joy was tempered by an injury to Ashley Cole last night. The left-back departed on a stretcher in obvious discomfort with what the manager called a "serious" left knee problem after catching first one foot and then the other in the turf as he chased a ball with no one near him."

The Times, Matt Dickinson: "Huge issues such as the manager’s future remain unresolved, but at least this display gave hope to the Chelsea supporters that if Mourinho is to depart, it could yet be on a high. It was only one match and defensive frailties cannot be passed over but, in their vigour, Chelsea showed that they have stopped feeling sorry for themselves and are prepared to battle for trophies, whatever is going on in the boardroom."

Official Chelsea FC Website: "Blackburn had their moments but in a game run for the most part by an outstanding Lampard, and containing a Lassana Diarra display that earned his first chants from the crowd, Chelsea merited both their goals and their clean sheet."

The goals

The good

  1. The performance. It was as far removed from the Liverpool fiasco as is humanly possible. Despite early Blackburn pressure the team really showed they were up for the fight, battling for the ball and for 20 minutes following the goal passing the ball so slickly even Arsene Wenger would have been drooling. Every player did well including Claude Makelele, despite his unswerving ability to concede free kicks.
  2. Lassana Diarra. Showed deft touches, tough tackling skills and real desire and commitment. The fine obviously worked.
  3. Michael Ballack. At last he showed what he's capable of, running into great positions, showing great vision with his passing, controlling the midfield, tackling well and actually looking like a real hungry player. Unlucky not to score with an excellent chance from a header.
  4. Andriy Shevchenko. Fabulous ball control, visionary space making, should have had a hat-trick, forcing one world class save from Brad Friedel and completely arsing up another glorious chance. Jose Mourinho looked well pleased and so were the crowd.
  5. Didier Drogba and Michael Essien. Can these two possibly get even better? A frightening thought for the teams we have yet to play.
  6. Blackburn Rovers. Credit where it's due, despite the result they came and tried to play football without cynical fouls or player histrionics. A credit to Mark Hughes who is forming a very handy unit. I was particularly impressed by Benni McCarthy and Morten Gamst Pedersen.

The bad

  1. Graham Poll. Pedantic, fussy, visually challenged and seemingly even more pompous than ever. He was at least even-handed in his awfulness giving free kicks to both teams on several occasions when they had a real advantage to play.
  2. The injury to Ashley Cole. A real sickener because he was having a real ding-dong battle with McCarthy, even on points in my view. The cruel fact was he went down with no-one within 10 yards of him and the first thought was his knee had given way. It hushed the crowd and he was given a rousing chorus as he was stretchered off in obvious pain. Still, not a bad backup in Wayne Bridge huh?
  3. The atmosphere. The evening kick-off and the unglamorous opposition obviously had an effect - I doubt there was more than 37,000 in there tonight. It took some real effort from the Matthew Harding stand to get some singing going but compared to other evening games I've attended it was hardly spine-chilling.
  4. Ricardo Carvalho's bizarre goal line clearance. The ball was going in, but Carvalho seemed to be gazing elsewhere as he ran back to try and prevent the goal, only to spring into life with the ball inches from crossing the line despite the fact he could have hooked it clear a few seconds before. Not really bad, but bloody weird.
  5. The girl who sits two rows behind me didn't turn up tonight and she is drop dead gorgeous. I am comforted by the fact that even if we have a bad game I can gaze longingly at her and fantasize about what I think she really needs from me. Just don't tell my wife that!

Man of the Match

Well for me it would be Didier Drogba again, just shading Michael Essien, but I welcome any suggestions because frankly every player was downright bloody marvellous tonight and any criticism would really be me nit-picking to say the least.

Final thoughts

We might, just might be leaving the tunnel of darkness, with John Terry due back against Charlton, Joe Cole talking about being back in March, Arjen Robben due to return and a performance that for once suggested we didn't miss any of them. The whole team, including the bench oozed confidence, and despite the press reports, real happiness and unity. I'm not throwing street parties or getting the bunting out yet, but maybe we've turned the corner and can start the sprint to the line.

Awsome passing, good if we're gonna do it the Gooners'way. I always new we're capable of playing decent football.

I doubt if Cashly would have got injured if we had wingers.

Lady luck has well and truly doen one from the Brisge.

Jose's right, we never get the niggling 7 day injuries do we. Ashley's injury looked bad, and whilst Bridge is a brilliant replacement, we're once again a defender short. JT still isn't confirmed as playing Saturday, with the Middlesbrough game a possibility.

It looked as though we played as a team last night; Diarra can only play himself out of RB at the moment, he's on fire. Sheva seems to come up against keepers on top form every week - Friedel made some quality saves last night.

All in all, things are looking up. 13 games to go, still a long way.

And a final point. A season and a half ago, I read the daily saga of Aulas from Lyon demanding the Earth for Essien, and wondered to myself if he is worth it. Based on his current form, I imagine the phrase 'daylight robbery' seems pretty apt.

Apologies.

It seems I have lost all ability to spell. The opening line should read:

"Lady luck has well and truly done one from the Bridge"

haha, give more info on number 5 in your bad points. :D

I was a lil surprised by all the empty seats at The Bridge.
But I have been promising myself, when I finally get down to London I'll be going to this mid week games as often as I can. Shame this game didnt take place in a months time as I could of been sat watching the best Chelsea performence for a while.
And singing along to Diarras first chants. He did play amazing.

That was a really top, top performance. Solid, fluid, powerful, confident - proof that when the diamond works it really doesn't matter about the lack of width cos you can just slice right through teams like they're not there. We had so much of the ball - surely our best league performance since... Watford? A long time, anyway.

Diarra was superb, though I worry about players being used out of position - they can last for a while, but as soon as somebody targets them (like Arsenal would in the CC final) they're left horribly exposed. He's clearly an excellent player, though.

Essien and Drogba were magnificent. Lampard-Ballack-Mikel is really working. Shev played... okay... got into the right positions even if his finishing wasn't there. He should definitely start because it also means we can use Kalou better - coming off the bench, where his pace and quick feet are the last thing a tired defence wants to deal with. Reminds me of Flo or Solskjaer or RVP.

Even the two chances we gave away were dealt with by good defending rather than poor finishing.

Oh, and Brad Friedel. He's one of those keepers who you think always plays well against you, until you realise that he actually always plays well against EVERYONE. He's a very, very good keeper.

Now we face a new problem - what to do with Essien now that JT is back... I'd be tempted to drop Maka and play him with Lampard-Ballack-Mikel. Any thoughts?

Oh, and Tony. How do you watch the girl when she's sitting behind you? Hardly subtle mate...

The atmosphere might not have been rocking but there was a positive buzz bout the place. We did play very well, despite the pitch that once again resembled a ploughed field by the time Cole caught his studs in the turf. I am lost in admiration when it comes to Michael Essien. Although you'd probably have to give premiership player of the year to Ronaldo (because of his speed and attacking threat) if there is a more complete footballer in the league at the moment than Essien I haven't seen him.

Despite all the positives I still don't like the diamoind formation. Lampard is not a left winger and neither is Mikel a right midfielder. Playing this narrow would be a disaster against Utd or Arsenal (I'm sure the manager knows this but its worth pointing out).

Credit where credit is due, this performance was considerably better and I agree with everything that has been said with one possible exception.

Whilst the midfield and forward line linked wonderfully, the defence wasbreached far too often and a side better than Blackburn would have had a couple of goals. Not yet convinced by Diarra at right back, although he does look strong and excellent when going forward. Iam beginning to see what all the fuss was about Mikel, and he will, in time, be a quality addition to the team.

The usual suspects all turned up again: Frank, Essien and DD , and it was great to see Sheva and Ballack play as if they meant it.

So....The quad is back on, JM and Sheva are hugging, JT is (hopefully) back at the weekend and it is only Charlton that we have to beat.

Lets hope the Spurs will be outto salvage some pride after their hiding by the Arsenal reserves, and do us a favour by beating Utd.

One thing I don't understand though is why JM is willing to give everybody else a chance except SWP. The likes of Obi, Kalou, have all had a series of blinding stinkers but he gave them time.

An excellent performance. We looked really vibrant and created more chances that I can remember. Friedel pulled off two superb stops from Sheva, though the latter missed two golden opportunities also. Drogba was awesome.

I honestly thought we might drop points last night, but then I also suspected United might draw, and that Tottenham would go through in the Carling. Shows how good my hunches are!

My only concern is Diarra at right back. He is a very talented player, and has a lot of energy in the middle. I am not convinced with him at right back at all though. He lacks positional sense (inevitable as it is not his position), is too small, and gives a way a lot of niggly fouls/free kicks in dangerous positions on the flanks. For the first twenty minutes or so I thought he had a bit of a mare against Pedersen. I personally would play Ferreira, but Diarra gives better width when we are playing the diamond.

Really looking forward to Charlton.

And how good is it to have Big Pete back?! Best keeper in the league (world) by a mile. He completely dominates his box and is brilliant at plucking the ball out of the air from dangerous set-pieces.

Come on Chels!

Now I know why you have not been seeing Ballack playing well in other games. The girl ought to stay away for good.

Lovely show of football. Like TSO said, the good football will begin when the confidence gets back.

Diarra is playing like a right back we have been missing. Pity about A Cole but I guess that is what our season this time round has been. Injuries injuries injuries...That is why wining this league this time round is going to be even sweeter.

Next up Charlton while ManU plays Totts who we beaten by Arsenal in the Carling...I hope that loss inspires some reaction of their team quality.

13 more games...Didi has 15 goals... a goal per game in the remaining matches would put him on 28 how long have we waited for this... Lamps on the other hand needs only 4 to make 20...bloody incredible.

I love the way Lamps plays especially with his crossing...It just bites at me when I see him nt playing as well as I know he can play. His passing yesterday was awesome...World class...sorry out of this world...

I can not find words to express the feelings for Essien. All I can do is agree with whoever says we ripped off Lyon on this player. Obi is surely not 19 - his vision is incredible...Finally Fabregas is not the only 19 year old that actually plays decent football in the middle of the park. I think Obi can even go one better...Height Strength, Ball Skills, passing and the quality around him...

Finally Sheva...Going out to get his number on my shirt. His class is incredible. For any one to say that this player was forced on TSO...Well may they force ore of the same. 31 is little for what this striker offers. That movement infront of goal is too fluidly done that is seems near to impossible to train. Top Marks man for me.

More of the same more of the same please....

I'm suprised by all the good reveiws you guys have given this game.

For starters i don't think Blackburn really put effort in as they used to, no pressure on the ball. Chelsea were average, i couldn't see any desire from Shevers or Ballack, they both just hung around. Ballack didn't pressure the ball when a BB player was in front of him and Shevers just looked slow. Players weren't supporting each other and showing for the ball when going forward.

Frank lost the ball once or twice and so did a few other players with poor passing.

If we play like last night against Manure FC or Arse FC against there current form then i'm sure we'll loose.

I want to see better next time, especially against Charlton, who are usuless at the moment.

KTBFFH.

Chelsea Beef, with all due respect, that's nonsense. Blackburn are a decent side and we passed them off the park, outmuscled them in the middle and generally gave them a lesson in football (who definitely missed Savage). It was an excellent, almost complete performance. Ballack showed for the ball and used it well and Shev put himself in at least four or five good goalscoring positions.

'Frank lost the ball once or twice'. Jeez, well shoot him then. He also scored one, created one and generally ran the game. I don't think either Arsenal or Man Utd could have done much to better last night, a game in which we had almost complete control from beginning to end and could have won by five.

Anthony, I've been saying for ages that the Chelsea crisis comes back to Cech's absence and the resulting sap in confidence. Just seeing him come through a pack of players to take the ball gives the whole defence a lift. I think after the Scousers experimented with Dudek in their games against Arsenal, they finally understood what I was on about. It's not that Hilario was a bad keeper, he just isn't in the same class as Cech or Carlo. Those injuries, more than anything else, have really knobbled us this season. But we're still there, and getting stronger and stronger...

Chelsea Beef, overly harsh assessment IMHO, though in fairness some of the other comments have been too far the other way. 3-0 against Blackburn is a good result for anyone, esp given our recent league form.

Diarra, looks a very good footballer, though struggled at times defensively, which is understandable.

Sheva, looked sharper last night than he has at any other time I have seen him. Unlucky not to score.

Ballack, bit anonymous first half but some lovely touches second half. Kind of player who somehow looks much better on the highlights than he does during the match. Shows how little I understand top-level football. Also, tricky for him when Lampard is clearly the top man, as der kaiser said.

Essien, top performance as ever given being out of position though we still need JT back sharpish for sterner tasks.

Drogba, my player of the year so far and another performance to back that up. Too strong for Blackburn.

All the others did well. Shame about Ashley. I know Bridgey is playing well at the moment, as he needs to to have a chance of getting in the team. But still think in the very biggest games one-on-one against the very best players, Ashley has proved himself to be up there with the best in the world. Against Barca and Man U this could make a difference, though can't think of any better alternative than Bridgey on form (remember Arsenal, legend)

Thought atmosphere was better than it has been for a long time in the second half, with notable contribution from Shed end and east lower, getting the whole ground going at one point. Long may it continue.

In the context of EPL clubs in better form then blackburn we won't look so good with this performance.

On the other hand i'm sure this has given the team a lift and there performances will improve. I wasn't so overly impressed and still await the Chelsea of 05/06 to show up.

Maybe i'm being to optamistic.

I agree with Chelsea Beef. Overall an excellent performance, delighted with the 3 points bla bla but is everyone getting carried away with Ballack and Sheva. I thought Ballack was lazy and pulled out of all 50:50 challenges.

As for Sheva, yes he worked really hard, so no doubting his commitment, but chasing and commitment is ok if you're an apprentice but not enough when you're a £30m superstar. He had a clear opening in the 2nd half and he poked a feeble shot. Even Kalou showed him how to do it later on.

Ending on a positive Drogba and Essien are immense. They're both playing like 2 men each, which probably explains how we're getting away with carrying Bollocks and Sheva!

God Bless TSO and all the players for a fantastic performance.

Essien - I am so happy with this guy at the mo I would actually let him take my 2 daughters.

Ballack - so true that he looks better in highlights then while playing - however who would we put on the pitch instead of him either in a 4-3-3 or diamond 4-4-2?

Lamps - so hot right now.

The Drog - you are truely the king of kings

Sheva - great movement but he looks so slow - i think that showed that as soon as kalou came on for him he managed to skip around a player and score. I think Sheva man-beating days are over - but he works hard and compliments the Drog. And gets defenders tired for Kalou.

The rest - awesome - i thought they all played well.

The EPL is no longer down to us - MANUre most drop points. So if we win, it is becasue they lost it not because we won it. That said - nothing would be sweeter then to win it 3 times in a row.

Bring on the Carling, FA and Euro Cups - i can see us winnning 2 out of 3 of those!!

God bless Roman's blue army (i wish he would start showing up again though)!!

4 points: 1) It's great to see OBI starting to show us why that £16m was not charity to the mancs. 2) Diarra is a fantastic young talent but shouldn't we be playing genuine right backs? After all, we've got two fit & available, and if they're not up to the new CFC standard, why didn't we bring in one that is? Personally, i think Paulo is steady enough to provide some assurance. But WHAT has happened with him? COST £13m+, and JM challenged media to question his purchase after seeing him in action. Seems like he's not too keen on him himself now. Yet another proving to be an unsatisfactory signing? 3)Though not as completely brilliant as some like to purport,Lamps is nearly always involved in anything that's good. We'll only truly realize how hugely significant his contributions are once he's gone. 4) I fear Carvalho's 'good form' won't last once JT returns. The two often seem mutually incompatible... PLEASE, Ricardo, .Prove me WRONG..!

Considering we were dragged into a discussion not worth discussing I think whoever was forwarding the rumours should come clean...an apology for insulting our intelligence at least.

I do not think that this blog should be lowered to aspects of settling own concealed resentments. I believe the persons that visit this blog are serious persons of high moral standing....was I wrong?

Jose - no-one dragged you into a discussion, you chose to take part. It's an open forum, as stated before - I believe that the rumours came from the press and most of the football world was speculating; to me it seems unnatural not to discuss it, but that's just my opinion.

High moral standing? In the words of Francis Urquhart "You might say that - I couldn't possibly comment." :-)

Come to think of it, he also said "Nothing lasts forever - even the most glittering reign must come to an end." He might have a point there.

I doubt you'll find a bigger fan of Mourinho than me - as far as I'm concerned he can stay until they cart him out in a box in 50-odd years time. But it's really just a bit of fun - nothing more; don't take it so seriously!

TSO has done a great job for us and we love him to death for what he's done for our club but don't act like our club would be in turmoil if he left, Chelsea is such a great club that we can afford to talk about the greatest managers in the world coming to our club if he left, put that spin on it and now tell me what you think......!

Good to see Jose and MikeL back to their normal mode of lauding the right to free speech and comment. Happy to be a loony MikeL if it means freedom of expression.

Prawndwicheater - you may have a point because it was with some surprise that we in the MHL found ourselves being led at one point by The Shed, and god forbid by the bloody West Stand. All I can say is there were a lot of empty seats in the ground and I find that a bit of an atmosphere inhibitor - I'm not saying it was bad in a Villa/Boro empty stadium way, just that I'm accustomed to the full house hotbed of noise we usually have. Imagine if we had a 60,000 seater and got crowds like the other night - it'd be like singing in an empty warehouse.

Peter - I'm with you on Ranieri - nice bloke, dignified and all that, but a tactical f*ckwit and not hard or steely enough to be a winner no matter what the funding. And what has he done since - a poor spell at Valencia followed by unemployment - it's hardly an indictment of his success with us is it? And before anybody has a pop - I thought he should have gone because we needed to move on BUT he did keep us in an honourable state when Bates' House of Cards started to fall, for that he deserves credit, but he is NOT a winner.

JD, hope Germany was good and that you downed a few pints of Weissbier or similar whilst receiving your text updates!

Fakreddin - Riccy was in imperious from from day one in my view and his partnership with JT was really flourishing. I think it'll be better because Riccy will have learnt from the experience of being the only real centre-back, and he'll have an even greater appreciation of JT's influence.
