The Guardian, Kevin McCarra: "[Chelsea] sustained their close pursuit of leaders Manchester United, with the gap now at three points once more. Jose Mourinho even flaunted the depth of his squad, with five changes from the FA Cup semi-final line-up. Shaun Wright-Phillips did not so much slip back into the first XI as dominate it. His pair of goals were the first he had scored in the Premiership for two years."
The Times, Matt Dickinson: "Mourinho was required to make a few changes last night just to give some players a rest but Shaun Wright-Phillips, the principal beneficiary, produced two superb goals in the first half to justify his promotion. Salomon Kalou and Drogba were also on the scoresheet and, aside from lots of huffing and puffing, West Ham had only the consolation of a fine goal from Carlos Tévez."
Daily Telegraph, Henry Winter: "In a game that glittered with breath-taking strikes, seemingly intent on settling April's goal-of-the-month competition in 90 minutes, Jose Mourinho's visitors just showed a greater cutting edge. Wright-Phillips plundered two fine goals in the first half, although Carlos Tevez netted a magnificent strike in between, but Chelsea simply went through the gears again after the break and confirmed victory through Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba."
The Independent, Sam Wallace: "Not even a brick thrown at the window of the Chelsea bus appeared to shake the progress of the team themselves who have, of late, been advancing with all the certainty of an armoured car across a field of daisies. Once again the gap to Manchester United at the top of the table is back down to three points, and once again the question is asked of the Premiership leaders: will their nerve hold with the blue machine rumbling relentlessly behind them?"
Official Chelsea FC Website, Neil Barnett: "[F]or a team dreaming of glory against a team destined for the drop, this was a canter."
31' Wright-Phillips 0-1 35' Tevez 1-1 36' Wright-Phillips 1-2 52' Kalou 1-3 62' Drogba 1-4
For once there was no real contest. It did swing towards Essien at one point for his sheer willingness and ability to hold the ball. However, for his first two Premiership goals taken in stunning style partnered to a battling and dazzling display the man to take the bouquet is... Shaun Wright-Phillips. Well done, young man. Now keep bloody doing it... as a certain Mr. Clough would have said!
Compared to Sunday this was like the team were taking their proverbial pampered poodles for a quick stretch in the park. A well deserved win, done in a style to compare favourably with Manchester United and the airy-fairy boys of Arsenal, whilst also being “economical” in terms of effort put in. At the end the players looked like they’d done nothing more strenuous than climb a flight of stairs. The finishing was clinical, but we could and should have had more to squeeze the goal difference. Let's hope that doesn’t come into effect. I’d rather lose outright than be done by virtue of goal difference. The quadruple is still on (although the chances are now lessened because I’ve mentioned it) and the pressure is back on Manchester United. Let's also hope we can do similar on Sunday against a hopefully “already on the beach” Newcastle, because there are two chances of United slipping up against ‘Boro at Old Trafford on Saturday evening. Slim and none. And slim just rode out of town.
SWP has shown improvement in his last few appearances and last nights two goals have taken him up a level – has he done enough to save himself? I’m really pleased for him (and his dad) because he seems a decent person who’s stayed professional and determined throughout.
I thought Bridge played really well, better than 7/10 in my view. If I was Bridge I’d be disappointed to be dropped for Cole for the big the games. His run and cross for SWP were brilliant.
Tevez may be a good player but whenever he’s on camera I can’t help myself looking at his neck instead of what he’s doing on the ball.
I think we have a great chance for the title. My biggest worry in the run in was away to Arsenal but they might implode just at the right time. If we win all our games then we just need Man U to draw one other game and Man City and Everton away must provide this opportunity.
Tony and the disagreeing lot!
While everyone seems to have a common opinion which is different than mine, I thought I certainly need to explain further on my view of Chelsea’s performance last night.
4-1 is a great result in the backdrop of the facts such as (i) it was an away game (ii) Chelsea were tired (iii) West Ham was relatively fitter, atleast on paper.
When I see most of the players scoring more than 7/10 in ChelseaBlog.com, I’m truly surprised. I was screaming at every ball lost by us, every interception of our passes, poor touches resulting in balls conceded etc. Certainly, until the 60th our game was not of high quality. There was this schoolboy error by Lampard in the first half which nearly cost us a goal. Against any other team, that would have been a sure goal. Had it resulted in a goal, probably, we would have rated him low in this match, wouldn’t we?
Our performance was solid, clinical, professional - after we got the scrappy third goal. Most of it was also because, West Ham completely surrendered and lost their heart which made it possible for us to run around without losing the ball. I value our performance of the first hour than the later half hour. It is the first hour of the match where we have not been good enough all season.
As regards resting of players, what we would hate to see is Lampard or Drogba not being at their best for any of the three possible encounters with Man Utd next month. That is exactly we should try to avoid at any cost.
Now I have added a player rater in the above post. Under the rater, you can see the benchmarks too and then compare the rating with the explanation. For your convenience, I’ve given below the player ratings as per Chelseablog and BlueChampions. We seem to differ on Terry, Lampard, Mikel and Cech.
* Petr Cech - Chelseablog score 7/10 - BlueChampions score 6/10
* Michael Essien - Chelseablog score 8.5/10 - BlueChampions score 9/10
* Ricardo Carvalho - Chelseablog score 8.5/10 - BlueChampions score 7/10
* Wayne Bridge: Chelseablog score 7/10 - BlueChampions score 7/10
* John Terry: Chelseablog score 8/10 - BlueChampions score 6/10
* Frank Lampard: Chelseablog score 8.5/10 - BlueChampions score 6/10
* Didier Drogba: Chelseablog score 8/10 - BlueChampions score 7/10
* Lassana Diarra: Chelseablog score 6/10 - BlueChampions score 5/10
* Salomon Kalou: Chelseablog score 8/10 - BlueChampions score 7/10
* Shaun Wright-Phillips: Chelseablog score 9/10 - BlueChampions score 8/10
* John Obi Mikel: Chelseablog score 8.5/10 - BlueChampions score 6.5/10
* Joe Cole (Sub): Chelseablog score 7/10 - BlueChampions score 6/10
* Michael Ballack (Sub): Chelseablog score 7/10 - BlueChampions score 6/10
* Paulo Ferreira (Sub): Chelseablog score 7/10 - BlueChampions score 7/10
It’s all for you to discuss and decide.

Good to see your views over here. I based my review on the a number of factors and weighing heavily was the draining week we 've just had, combined with the inherent danger of playing a team battling for survival. I would argue that teams like this are more dangerous than the teams in the top six. Last night was a potential banana skin and one which we avoided with flair and professionalism and I couldn't ask for more. It's because of the previous few weeks, what with replays against Spurs, CL games against Valencia and then Sunday's sapping game followed by this potential bruiser that I thought the players attitude, skill and stamina deserved such high marks.
Had Man Utd performed like that then the morons in the 4th Estate would have been purring. As it happens most of them have been pretty good today, maybe the message is getting over.
Mark - I agree about Bridge and in fact I thought I'd given him 8. I was typing it out at midnight and therefore this was a mistake I'm happy to rectify. Nick - could you adjust Bridge's rating to 8 please?
Hi guys,
Thought we did play really well last night. As Tony points out, had it been ManUSA the press would have been wetting themselves over the performance. I guess we're used to a lack of credit.
I watched the game in the social club of the team I play football for, after our game. What surprised me was how vehemently the ManUSA fans in there celebrated when the Hammers scored. They're not at all convinced its over yet. Not by a long way. And they're still relying on other teams doing us over to win the league, they dont think they can do it on their own !!!
Last night proved, to me at least, we are crying out for a RB. Diarra seems to perform sporadically when selected there. One game he'll seem a natural, the next he's getting 'ripped a new one' by all manner of average Premiership footballers (and Tevez, who was different class last night). I still don't have faith that Ferreira is the answer, and Johnson is always hit and miss. Its certainly the area I'd like us invest in in the summer.
On the other hand, LB is just peachy. I maintain Bridge has been better than Cole this season. I really hope he doesnt consider his future in the summer, it would be a huge blow to lose him.
That match was far from perfect. We had a lot of attacking players on and they spent the whole day chasing the ball. we had both essien and obi doing the maka role, and they tended to confuse each other. why not leave essien at rb where he does so well. again we conceded a goal from the wing, our open wings. (...that would be christmas to gerrard and riise) i couldn't tell what the formation was.
and i also noticed we've to defend frank's cornerkickschips. i think we had a lot of dangerous crosses in from our exposed wings...(when will his specialness sort that?).
awsome strikes from swp, wonder wat all those fellow fans that been molesting him have to say. interesting development, jm spent 2 years using swp in his war with arnesen, and now he's trying to make up(pathetic!). remember swp was sanctioned by arnesen?.
jm doesn't know how to get his combinations right. when you a good crosser like Bridge why not have a good header like ballack as well??
And Tevez is class, hope he stays in the premiership.
>> jm doesn’t know how to get his combinations right.
Indeed. It's frankly amazing that we've managed to end up ON THE VERGE OF MAKING FOOTBALL HISTORY under such inept stewardship.
You utter, utter c*ck.
JD...tu hablás muchas mierda!!
get that translated you c*ckteaser.
i am refering to bridge's excelling crossing that would benefit ballack's good heading. Get it?
I mean a 4-1 away at the hated hammers - who've beaten the Mancs and done the double over the gooners - after the matches we've had recently, "far from perfect". I suspect some of these so-called Chelsea allegiances must go back, oh at least a couple of years.
And I was referring to the fact that we seemed to fare quite well last night anyway. Got it?
Irrespective of your obvious dislike for Mourinho Henry, has it not occurred to you that he might just know a little bit more about football than you?
Obviously not.
Henry,
Leave your childish comments to 606 board, the place you belong to.
I am not going to impose myself here.
If he knows more why not sort obvious things like frank's corners. some of this jose worship sickens.
i am only interested in the football issues not utter c*cks and childishness.
How things have changed. In the days of Osgood et al I'd be happy with a winning run of 3 games. In the 80's and 90's a win would be rejoiced.
Now we're nit-picking tactical details after a 4-1 away win capping a 9 game winning streak!
I refuse to listen to Skys main commentary for Chelseas matches any more - where possible I tune into fanzone which is more entertaining and the genuine bias is refreshing - Last night The Hammers Fanzone commentator described having Mourihno as manager as being tantermount to cheating as whomever hires him next is guaranteed to win something. Honest an insightful - switch to Fanzone next time for a far more enjoyable and even handed appraisal of the game (even if it is slighly bereft of "technical commentary).
Starting with John Hollins (the begining of my Chelsea memory), I have harboured reservations about every single manager with the exception of Mourhino. Anyone who has followed Chelsea for a sensible length of time would recognise that this guy stands not just head and sholders above all previous incumbents, but waist legs and feet as well. Its only when he's gone that we will truly realise just how good he is/was.
Tony,
What can I say to you, I agree with you entirely on all your comments AND reviews, when I read your reviews, its like I am reading my own thoughts, ok, dont worry I havent "elevated" myself to your stature ;) but you know what I mean.
Thanks for writing so beautifully, maybe the world does seem so after such a win for the blues :)
as far as I thought until the first goal, it looked like a looong night coming for us, dont know what the hammers were thinking, but they came out with all their guns blazing, our bouys just absorbed it all and then when they got a chance, just went for the kill, of course that goal(Cech!! wake up man, you could have done better than that for sure!! If i remember correctly it was from an almost similar position Valencia .. got that goal, is it your weak spot?, Please work on it, dont want strikers giving us a hard time by testing you specifically from there, I think my blood pressure really cant take it anymore, not to mention my gf's complaints about my undying love for all things Chelsea!)
Lampard was booed so badly, it was unfortunate, he tried very hard, and he did look like he is coming back to his confident self, the goal he scored over the weekend must have given his confidence a boost. Work on it Frank!, we are with you
John Obi, Essien,Ricardo, Drogba-These guys, a class apart.
SWP, he played like he was possessed, dont know what brought this about in him, maybe Jose should find out what he ate or what he did the evneing before!!!, Great game SWP, he actually played a few balls where he tried to set up chances, instead of tripping over the ball, especially when there are no defenders trying to get the ball from him ;)!!
JT, was as usual the leader that he is, it was a bummer, that he went on ahead and said that he considers that winker/diver as one if the best, to mention his name on this blog would be a shame ;).. but JT, keep leading us the way you do, we will all be inspired.
JM, he was a little upset right from the beginning of the game, whats with that? who Roman was all smiles, but "knowing" JM, you never know, he loves to have a mean laugh... at the end :).. as long as JM and Roman are smiling... we all are..
One thing I wanted to add, about this team, is that all it takes is One player, one of the eleven in the ground plays with his potential, ALL the other 10 raise their level to support him, proof would be, for example, Wayne bridge, that run from the half of th efield to the left corner and the cross converted my SWP!!!! thats it, against Blackburn, it was Cech and Cech all the way..we need games like these, to make these guys realise what they are, individually and what they can do as a team!!. Imagine if Drogba starts to feel possessed, ;)!! or lets say Essien, the woodwork would definitely be without some paint by the end of the game :). this team definitely deserves an ovation for the spirit they are playing with, the grit and determination, they have this steely nerve, and they have this resolve,to show to the crowd, to prove to the people what they really are :) and what it means to them to do their best everytime over and over again... (which we all believe..and know!).
Peter H, just before John Hollins, the Johnny Neal team with Pat Nevin, David Speedie, Kerry Dixon, etc, was great to watch. Was at school so memory a bit patchy but think he only left because of illness.
Also, I will always love Luca, the one great disappointment being that we didn't win the league that year when I think we threw away the two-goal lead against Leicester and got done by the spammers at home (see how that compares to last night's 4-1 away).
Love him or hate him, though, Mourinho is the bollocks.
Great artivcle, speak my mind exactly. However, I heard somewhere that Matin Tyler is a (sort of) Chelsea fan. Perhaps he is trying to cover up. I don't know.
Hmm, if Tyler is a Chelsea fan then he is donning a bloody good Arsenal fan disguise! Personally he reminds me of Brian Moore when he softened in middle age into a grumpy old traditionalist with puritanical views on the game in general.
I've been a fan for 36 years now and I've seen the good, the bad and the unbelievably dire. These are The Good Times and there have never been better ones at Chelsea.
I will back anyone's right to air their views no matter ho wrong or misguided i think they are, even Henry. But JD is right on this one. Henry is a cock for suggesting that Mourinho in some way or another doesn't know what he's doing. According to Wikipedia his record at Chelsea is
Played 170
Won 119
Lost 19
Drawn 32
Win ratio 70%
Sir Rednose is at 57.45% and yes, I know he's managed a lot more games for Man Utd. Even so, this is an impressive stat and somehow or another you don't fluke a record like that.
SWP--Absolute brilliance! pity he couldn't get a third for a much deserved hat-trick...congrats to him for starting and finishnf the game plus 2 well thought-out and tactful goals! The cross from Bridges was well timed and Wright-Philips was in the exact position he should've been...Justification that he deserves starting line-up glory!
Is it just me, or is Drogba a little jaded after all hs hard dedication for FA Cup, Carling Cup, Premiership and EUFA?
He needed the break lat night, especially if we gonna keep up the winning streak :)
I agree that Kalou has a habit of either hogging the ball and lissing, or alternatively hesitatng, passing the ball and consequently losing us a goal just when we need it most.
What the hell is up wth loers not approving of Mourinho? He's a dedicated manager with, I think, the best team in the league. Chesea deserve Number 1 status, just look how we've caugh up the points and are on the tails of Man Utd!
I'm keeping the faith here in South Africa,
i know we can get all the glory we deserve...
Blue is a good colour.
xxx:) Meg
Hey megan
Did not know you were from SA!!! I am also by the way. JHB. Big Chelsea follower. Its good to see fellow South Africans supporting the Blues. We need all the support we can get. D
Lovely perfomance...
And Megan Blue is The Only Colour...
Come on Chelsea Come ON CHelsea COME ON CHELSEA
JD, Tony... don't waste your time on Henry, I reckon he's a closet Arsenal fan... so that makes him a prick!
Does anyone know how many season tickets are in issue. I'm trying to work out whether members have any chance of a cup final ticket.
hey hot guys...and girls.
Mark, i wanna know if i could get tickets way down here in the depths of Africa cos it would be amazing 2 see Drogba and the other heroes in the flesh, and, um...sweat.
Where u from Mark?
Hey Dan, glad 2 see mor Joburg ppl gettng in on the action, SA soccer just doesn't compare!
Blue is the only colour...Just for Jose Musumbu!
xXxXx
Mark - Re: FA Cup final tickets.
I read that several thousand season ticket holders will miss out on FA Cup final tickets, because club sponsors will be provided tickets from the club's batch of 25,000 seats.
Decided to quickly check the official club site and found this:
"Chelsea FC currently has 27,267 season ticket holders in total, (22,606 non hospitality/4661 hospitality). We also have nearly 70,000 members.
Chelsea will receive a total of 25,000 tickets for the match to satisfy this minimum demand."
It doesn't look promising.
Thanks Nick
I've got 80+ loyalty points so I'll live in hope.
Its coming to something when even season ticket holders may miss out.
I have 123 loyalty points. AI never travel to away games with the club I presume I have amassed thes through having a season ticket bought in the aftermath of not being able to get a ticket the last time we played Utd at Wembley. I can't actually make the final (piss poor planning means I'm travelling) but I can tell you if my little group miss out on seats there will be a riot.
It is a shambles.
I feel for any of you guys who go regularly and wont be able to get a ticket (I'd love to go, but I'd be so far down the list of possibilities).
I can understand the FA wanting to show off Wembley to the world and his wife, but can't believe they can justify giving 40,000 to people who arent connected to us or ManUSA.
Why give an allocation to each of the 92 league clubs ??? UEFA and FIFA get an allocation, which is almost understandable, but why county and international fa's need them is beyond me.
Peter - if you're a season ticket holder and a tickets available for you I'll buy it from you if you can't go!
I didn't realise season tickets holders needed or gathered loyalty points.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is eyeing a £150m week-long holiday - on the moon. (The Sun).
Roman wants to see the place where points are coming from :)
Unlucky Henry

Good news for the rest of us, but bad news for the rest of the PL!
Just listened to a couple of Scousers gobbing off on Wednesday night's Five Live.
I am really getting sick of their cockiness about Wednesday night's game.
I hope we spank them so hard that we don't have to put up with this nonsense any longer.
Great news from Kenyon today about Jose........ I wonder if we can all get a refund for all the papers purchased from the so-called print media, who have been printing lies and fabrications over the last 6 months.
Kenyon said more or less the same thing about two months ago and if anything the Jose-watch intensified. The only proof will be that JM is still around next season, and then they can start speculating on that following.
Another big week coming up. They seem to be commonplace about now, and that, contrary to what the media thinks, is good news indeed.
Here comes the day when we can turn things over!!!! ManUre draws with Boro. The gap is only 4, and we have game in hands!!!!
Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!Come on Chelsea!!!
I do not know how many of you have watched the game, but that referee worked so hard to give ManUre at least one point. This is a Disgrace, simply Disgrace!!!!!
Of course United have to feel lucky not to lose because there was a penalty for Boro at the end
Referee missed a blatant penalty. On the other hand, it is hard to understand how ManU failed to score more goals. We still need maximum points from all the remaining games. Definitely doable, but difficult (Arsenal, Bolton, ManU, Everton still to come). This is becoming a very interesting season.
Just look at the sky... There's a bright crescent moon up there, and ManU dropped two more bloody points! May this lunar effect continue! :-)
There's a Boro fanzine called... Fly Me To The Moon! Seriously, this is becoming uncanny.
Just seen the MoTD highlights of ManU/Boro. Clear foul. Clear penalty. Referee has perfect view. Realises last minute; Old Trafford; Boro attacking; goal kick. Even Shearer said it was a pen. Only the ref knows why it wasn't given. We knew we were going to have to do this the hard way didn't we.
Fly me to the Moon
and let me play among the stars!!!!!
Come on Chelsea!!!!!
Nick, this lunar phenomenon is beyond human factor! I was hoping 2 more points from the Moon, and my wish was granted sooner than expected! :-)

re Joey Cole being appreciated more than Frank: I read somewhere today (though I can't find it again - I thnk it must have been an early version of Winter's Telegraph article) that Joey has paid for knee surgery on Peter Brabrook which has gone down well with the West Ham faithful. Add this to the Time's article last year which described him as "one of the best young men in Britain" and it is obvious that Joey is running for sainthood.
Why is it that I never get to watch Chelsea's better games? I had to put up with really, really, boring Liverpool today, and that after having to survive through their match against Man City on Saturday. How on earth can anyone call Chelsea boring when there is so much worse on offer?
As for SWP, he has played a more roving role recently rather than being stuck out on the wing. Maybe this suits him better. After all, his one winger trick is to push the ball past the defender and then run like hell, and most defenders have figured this out.
Just wanted to say i agree with almost everything u said, and really appreciate this blog. keep up the amazing work
