Come along Come along Come along and sing this song We’re the boys in Blue in Division Two And we’re going to The European Cup final.
Suffice to say that a few decades of listening to everyone from Abba to Jay Z hasn’t had much effect on my ability to pen anything resembling a passable chorus.
While the song doesn’t scan too well, there is something rather fitting about that given the occasion. I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that our place in tomorrow’s fixture list looks a bit, well, odd really. Rather like hearing that John Prescott is bulimic — utterly unbelievable, but apparently true.
Wednesday, May 21 2008 UEFA Champions League Final, Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow Manchester United v. Chelsea
Chelsea? I thought there was something written in the Magna Carta about Chelsea not appearing in games of this magnitude. Nostradamus probably had a prophecy on the subject. Then again, he did talk an awful lot of old cock at times.
After FA Cup final weekend in seasons past, we’ve usually indulged ourselves in idle transfer gossip about dilettantish Moroccan strikers and how many days it is until the first pre-season game against Kingstonian / Kuala Lumpur Red Bull Vikings.
During the Abramovich years the European dream has been tantalisingly close, but as untouchable as Liz Renner’s tits. Well, she wouldn’t let me anywhere near them back in the day, but I digress.
Many times we have watched European football’s showpiece event from behind a cushion, collective ears covered as Clive Tyldesley screamed “Barcelona!” and “Istanbul!” like a man with Time Out City Guide Tourette’s until he ejaculated into David Pleat’s coffee.
Let’s be honest, we all groaned collectively at the last eight draw, didn’t we? Make the semis and meet Liverpool. Again. The pessimist in me (a fairly sizeable and persuasive individual, it has to said), had a horrible feeling something was going to go wrong. And it did.
Benitez wound up the wrong man.
Lampard sent Reina the wrong way.
As the hangover died down the following day, the magnitude of it all started to sink in.
We’re going to Moscow for the biggest game that English club football has ever seen.
Moscow, we’re told, will be welcoming to our travelling fans. Provided of course that they don’t disturb Lenin. Or moon at the United fans on Red Square. Or attempt to pay tribute to Russia by re-enacting the Odessa Steps sequence from “Battleship Potemkin” with the smallest bloke they can find crammed into a shopping trolley.
No sense of fun, these former Communist types.
There will of course be much talk of United’s proud European history and other such subjective guff, with the general underlying tone that we should be eternally grateful to be sharing the stage with the mighty Ronaldo and company on such a glorious night.
But before we wilt in the presence of such glory and tradition, let’s just remember a few things about our ‘lil old football club, for a moment.
The first English team to qualify for the European Cup wasn’t Manchester United or Arsenal (I’d mention Liverpool here, but they were rattling around in the Second Division at the time). It was Chelsea.
A mixture of short-sightedness and politics on the part of the football authorities denied Roy Bentley’s 1955 title winning side the opportunity of testing themselves against the likes of Gento and Di Stefano. Another one of the many “what might have been” moments in the extraordinary life of Chelsea FC, but the class of 2008 has a fine opportunity to correct that particular injustice.
In between the days of Bentley and Ballack, we’ve suffered relegation, near bankruptcy, electric fences, the threat of property developers and Andy Myers. We’ve seen true greats like Osgood and Zola who could have easily graced European Cup finals in a Blue shirt, but never quite reached the heights we always hoped they could.
Tomorrow night, as well as those who have made the trip to Moscow, Blues across the globe from London to Sydney via the Frog and Firkin, West Broadway, Vancouver will tune in to watch the biggest game in the — well, we all know what it means to each and every one of us.
This season has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least, but thus it ever was in the life of a Chelsea fan. Even if the football has been less than inspiring at times, the subtext is certainly never dull.
Much as I’d like to write a happy ending to this particular chapter, everything is now down to the team and the footballing gods. Whilst we are confident in the abilities of the former, the latter can be either heartlessly cruel or overwhelmingly generous, as we know only too well. What happens next is still to be written, but win or lose, we’ll remember tomorrow night for the rest of our lives.
As for the story so far, Division Two strugglers to European Cup finalists in the space of twenty years isn’t a bad one to tell the grandchildren. If this football club didn’t exist, you’d have to invent it.
So it simply remains for me to say thanks for a great season Chelsea, you’ve made us proud. Now if you could just make us champions of Europe...
I am beginning to get to the 'Can't Eat, Can't Sleep' phase of the week. The next 36 hours will be amongst the longest in my life.
30% of the Melbourne fan club have departed for Moscow (yes, unfortunately there are only 10 of us!) leaving me and my hoplessly over exposed credit card behind.
I too find it hard to believe that the club I watched scramble to avoid relegation to the old Third Division in the mid-80's is now 90 minutes away from being the best side in all of Europe!
Rougvie, Driver, Aylott, Langley.... We have watched some truely average (yes, I'm being kind) players plying their trade in Blue over the years, and as a reward we now get to see them play off for the crown of 'Kings of Europe'.
This one is for all the true Chelsea fans out there.... For Ken Bates who saved the club from folding at the hands of Marler Estates...... For Matthew Harding who injected funds the next time we needed them and then didn't get the chance to see the dream come true.....For Jose Mourinho and all of the players that have come so close in the last 4-5 years.... For Roman as a reward for his investment over the last few years....
We will win the Champion's League because
We'll Never Be Mastered
By No Northern Bastards
We'll Keep The Blue Flag Flying High
Flying High, Up In The Sky
From Stamford Bridge to Luzhniki
We'll Keep The Blue Flag Flying High!
Blue Peter the Great- correct me if im wrong but didnt you say you were in adelaide for the game? where are you watching it? will be interesting to see how many chelsea fans there are.. i've been to the rosie for most of the CL games and not seen too many fans. i'm sure they'll all be coming out fo the woodwork though.
any more word on when(if) there will be a parade when (if) we win?
My first post here (thought I have been reading this for long time).
Though it sucks to be a football fan this side of Atlantic, its getting better. The only benefit of being jobless for last 6 months is watching the Blues going all the way to the finals. I don't regret all the $$$ I have not earned now.
For the icing on the cake, if we win it, it would be the greatest pay off.
Cheers!!
oh, how cool it is to title the article after the ramones album. god bless you jd!
and thinking of our team, another great performers album comes to mind: joe cocker's "maddogs and englishmen"...
i am unable to sleep for the past week, so the time passes by in a mist of sorts...could we already lift the cup, please!!!
As you so rightly said, win or lose, we aren't going to forget May21st, 2008 for a long time. Let us pray,it'll be for the right reasons
@ Dylbo,
Yep I live in adelaide and watching at home having to listen to Les Murray practise his 'talent' for foriegn pronounciations.. ! Unless there is a venue with the game on at 4am ? Where r u ?
@ Greenlight,
If I wassn't working I would drive over just for the pleasure of seeing that. Don't remember the CD pub in Collins St, I used to drink at the sherlock Holmes or is that now the Charles Dickens ?
@ peter- i would imagine the rosemount on hindley is playing it live but i reckon it will be packed out- it gets pretty rowdy in there though. im in adelaide, but heading overseas thursday to london funnily enough. as such, i think im going to have to cop a Les murraying too.
@ Dylbo - Think I will give the Rosemount a miss, prefer to shout at the TV alone ;-) heading back to the 'olde' country or visiting as an Ozzie. I am heading back sometime next year to visit my folks having been here for 20 years although not all in Adelaide.
@ Jang
My opinion is the "state of the pitch" is just an excuse waiting for the losing manager to use to cover up that their team wasn't good enough on the day.
In football like any other outdoor sport you have to be able to adapt to the prevailing playing conditions as a team as well as play silky football. Both teams will be playing on the same pitch so the old saying "the best team on the day will win" always holds true.
As for going to extra time - some of our key players are looking very sharp at the end of the season and fitness will definitely play a part as the game drags on. Heres hoping we beat them in 90 mins or worst 120 mins as the idea of penalties makes me shudder.
@ Peter the Great
The Dickens is a little further up the road from the SHerlock Holmes. SHerlock is rarely open at 4am, strangy enough!
@ Greenlight
Ah thanks when I am in Melbourne on the Queens brithday weekend I will check it out. Is it set back from the road as I vaguely remember an old pub down a side street. Been 12 years since I lived in Melbourne.
I am sorely tempted to just to drive through the night to be somewhere other than my lounge room to watch the game. I reckon if I leave around 7pm I will get there about 4am. The only problem is I am supposed to be at work on Thursday...unless...
Show meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the trophy, I loooooooooooooooooove Ze German.
The is our year boys, i have this funny feeling and as i have no pain in passing fluid i can only assume it is the feeling of us achieving something big!!
Working at a company with many liverpool, man utd and arse fans I have taken great pleasure in draping my scalf over my monitor and giving it a subtle point when they pass my office.
With Ze German in such great form, Frank still burning with emotions, DD wanting to prove a final point and Terry/Riccy looking like the legion of doom tag team we simply cant lose this one.
I feel we will go one nil down via a wonder goal by scholes or ronaldo - the commentators will be on their knees in such joyous gratitude and then WHAM - DD will pull it back and then lamps will set up Herr Ballack who will score the winner.
Please, please, please, please let it be our year.
KTBFFH
Fingers, toes and hair crossed. I hope we lift the trophy tommorow. I had a chat with my mates and should Chelsea win, we are going to run in the streets without our shirts waving a big Chelsea flag for an hour.
Oh. Dear.
I've woken up 24 hours early with a stomach churning like a dated washing machine in it's last spin cycle. The nerves have hit me hard, and all I can think about at the moment is bracing myself for the worst on Thursday morning (you know me, always the pessimist).
I'm angered to continually read why ManUSA are going to win. How fitting it would be to win in the year of the Munich anniversary; how Ronaldo deserves it because he's been so good; how Giggs is destined to score in the game that sees him overtake Charltons appearance record etc. repeat to fade.
I'd like to think that going in as underdogs with the press focussing on them is a good thing, but surely that can only happen for a finite number of occassions. Liverpool riled the Drog and he duly showed them that it was probably not the best idea. Can he do the same against Jar Jar Binks and the Video kid ??
Should I be proved wrong, and everyones favourite jumbled-together-like-a-jigsaw-puzzle warrior JT lifts the trophy, I may even consider the permanent inking of such an achievement about my person.
Mrs Fifty can whistle if she thinks otherwise.....
Many times we have watched European football’s showpiece event from behind a cushion, collective ears covered as Clive Tyldesley screamed “Barcelona!” and “Istanbul!” like a man with Time Out City Guide Tourette’s until he ejaculated into David Pleat’s coffee.
Absolutely brilliant.
A very good article JD, it is indeed hard to believe the club have come this far in 20 years. I'm 18 and have been following the club since 1998 so I havent had it as bad as people before me, such as my dad, who's been following Chelsea home and away since he came over from Ireland in '74.
We're off to Moscow from Stanstead tomorrow morning and I'm confident we will win. Win or lose it will be a great experience and I think just getting to the final is an amazing achievement with respect to where we were a decade or two ago.
I can't describe how mental I'll go if we win.
CAREFREE.
Oh dear JD, having killed sales of alphabeti spaghetti with your semi-final preview you're now doing for the coffee industry.
Just been round to Cafe Nero and when I asked for my usual they asked me was it with or without a dash of Clive.
I just turned and ran...
Morning BB - it's a public service you know; given the current mental state of us Chelsea fans, the last thing any of us need is coffee (with or without added Tyldesley).
@Biggs (9) - not often one gets the chance of squeezing a Ramones reference into proceedings...
For unconnected reasons I'm currently researching post-war British films set in whole or part in Berlin and was struck by how relevant a number of the film titles could be to tomorrow:
The Man Between [1953] - Peter Cech and ManUre's strikers
Desperate Moment [1953] - another last ditch tackle from Riccy
Ten Seconds to Hell [1958] - one goal down inside the last minute
Breakaway [1956] - a dazzling counter-attack after a spell of defending when DD slots home the winner
A Dandy in Aspic [1968] - Ronaldo's reputation after failing to deliver in big game again
A Prize of Gold [1955] - JT lifts Big Cup
Who? [1974] - ManUre's forgotten failures
OK - I admit it the tension is starting to get to me too......
What's wrong with me? I'm in a state of ethereal, Zenlike tranquility. Find me a lotus leaf and I'd probably sit on it with a half smile until someone declared me the next Dalai Lama.
I can't figure it out. I hate Man U so much that I have to remind myself to play nice whenever the subject of Munich comes up. I ought to be as twisted with anxiety as all of you. But I'm not.
The only thing I can think of is that I still haven't gotten over the fact that we're in this game. I never ever ever believed we'd get to the Final, and I was in such ghastly misery before and during the home game against 'Poo that it actually didn't stop after the final whistle. But now that it's finally sunk in that we didn't lose (again) to Mad Rafa and his frankly useless team, I don't seem to have any worry left.
It's in the lap of the gods now (or the Drogs).
Ommmmmmm ....
obviously nothing to do with AC Milan playing motherwell next season

@22 and 24
I did overdo the coffee and was getting a bit overexcited but as you can see some cornflower tea and LTB's zen like calm have really helped...

@ blue peterthe great (14)
"Heres hoping we beat them in 90 mins or worst 120 mins as the idea of penalties makes me shudder."
I think it´ll be a tough and tactical game without lots of scoring. The defensive lines will rule. But the longer we hold a tie the better I´m going to feel. We have quite good penalty takers and Ronaldo is going to lose it under so much pressure. Moreover we are the ones having a german international on our team who will never lose a shootout! So due to our german penalty insurance the idea of penalties makes me smile and calms my nerves. At least until kickoff...
Bluetone - I love the drogs again, damn it I am so fickle! I think its because he is such a monster that i want him to love the chels as much as we do - in all honesty he probably does hence why he gets so upset, ok ok i was wrong in my comments the other day. To be honest at this stage I wouldnt care what he said provided he steps up tomorrow and has a stormer.
I thought the CL would be ours this year - i always had a feeling we would get there as i have stated many a time on here. Whilst all of you, except limetreebluer, are worried, i am sooooo excited. I cant sit still, i just want the match to start. I want the rest of the world to see what the Chels are about, how passionate we are, how strong a unit we are but at the same time we can fling the ball around with the best of them.
This monkey is literally swinging from the trees, with a huge grin, totally over excited at the prospect of being in the pub proud to be blue whilst watching the CL final - yup that is right boys - we are there!
Come on - can i get a hell yeah!!
All this negativity is no good.
LINK
Interesting to note that all the playing squad except Ivanovic flew to Moscow.
How the hell can he have been picked to play for his national side when he hasn't kicked a ball for us in 5 months ???
I'm checking my family tree for Serbian lineage. I'm sure they have the need for a 'sturdy', medium-paced, 5ft 9in right back.....
"dressed in the Giorgio Armani team suits"
I love the chels :) - no need to mention that at all is there really. They are just showing off!! brilliant
Also JD / TG - is there any chance of having a "wheres Musumba" poster in the same context as "wheres wally"?
@29 Fifty - I recall we had that weird spell in the first half of the season of reversing the usual trend when players were apparently fit enough to play for their national sides but not for our first team:
Shevchenko was good enough for Ukraine, but only the golf course according to us;
Ballack got picked for a German squad months before he played for us
and I think Ferreira had a similar spell re Portugal's Euro qualifiers.
In the spirit of lobbing in a few links, this story on JT is a good read :
LINK
And this comment, more than most, sums up the direction our club has taken in the past few years :
"It is no wonder that most Chelsea fans feel as if they know Terry. It is he who is the link back to a dim and distant past when Bjarne Goldbaek was considered a big signing and the Champions League final was for other clubs."
I've met him. Once. And I'd agree, that more than any other player I'd say I 'know him' but that's because he has this almost unhealthy determination to stick himself on the line for us, and our club, 10 times out of 10.
Get Wednesday out of the way JT (and that pesky England game next week), enjoy your holiday and come back next season the player you were when you lifted the Premier League trophy - we miss you.
On to this :
Chelsea 13 Jeunesse Hautcharage 0, 1972
8-0 up on the first leg, the Shed End were soon running into the North Stand at half time to be behind the goal Chelsea were attacking. The Blues won 21-0 over two legs.
My Dad, who's not a Chelsea fan, has on a few occassions regaled the tale of how fans submerged the North Stand to witness further goals. I was never sure how he knew, bearing mind he wasn't there. Anyone witness it ??
Good review JD, just watching the lads arriving and getting ready to do their press conference. They all look so relaxed, to me that's a great sign.
Ok, it's their first time in a Champs Final but they know Man Ure inside out and back to front..
Tevez made me laugh in today's Sun newspaper, saying that Man U had won the game before the ref even blows his whistle for kick off tomorrow. What a retard!!
Fifty - wasn't it pretty regular practice to switch ends at half time until segragation in the mid-70s? I think my uncle has said he used to switch ends by walking round the old East Stand.
Not a bad list in the Tele - I'd like to find room for the Vicenza semi in 98 and the Bruges quarter-final in 95 when we won 2-0, brilliant atmosphere and genuine sense we were a club going places for probably the first time in a decade.
Goals here, crap quality mind.
LINK
Fifty - that is a great article - Terry is truely our gladiator.
Someone like him can be the difference in a game like this - When was the last time he scored? He must be due soon!
LINK
Jeez, looks like that whole Vicenza game is on you tube. Might watch it one day - as I can scarcely remember what happened!
When asked at the end of his press conference if he had a message to give to the media, AG said " I know you all love me and worry about me because your're always asking me if i'm going to stay in my job." Classic!! Made me laugh..
SuperFrank has confirmed he's spoke to nobody at Milan and is very happy at Chelsea. He said he's going nowhere!!
Phew!! I'll be able to sleep now tonight!!!!
Nah, seroiusly, knew he wouldn't. It's the media's way of trying to stir things up in the Chelsea camp before the big day which, speaking of which, is about..24hours and 36 minutes away!!
chelsea is in a class of their own right now. If chelsea are able to produce the same quality counter attacking play like the way they defeat manchester united recently at the bridge, the european glory is definitey going to be in chelsea way. The team have worked pretty wel without a good manager, i hope jus before the players consider leaving, they willjust make history for chelsea and make themselves a legend. Chelsea will defeat man u horribly...
Go for it Chelsea!!!
Im counting the seconds, I CANT WAIT. Lolli, very good news about SuperFrank every day I just wish we could get him a new contract sorted out becasue the speculation about his future never seems to end and its very difficult for us chelsea fans reading about it all the time. Tevez saying that Man-Ure have already won the final? WOW hes almost as stupid as he looks, I can guarentee that Riccy and JT will handle him and Shrek without difficulty and Drogba and Lamps will put Turdinand and Vidic under far more pressure, I heard from a friend today that AG is going to leave no matter what the result in the final, But it came from a Manc so I cant be sure lol, KEEP THE BLUE FLAG FLYING HIGH!
quite interesting - LINK make of it what you want.
hey miss Lolli - how you doing hun?
Frank is staying, that is brilliant - another season for you to drool and for ze german to show that he is better! ;)
See its the humour of Grant that is making me like him - that is just so brilliantly dry. love it.
I agree with everybody who says it is hard to wait. I am getting more and more nervous with every moment we getting closer to the game.
KTBFFH
@ BLUE TRUE BLUE JOE
Me and you both regarding my boy Frankie..
@ MUNKEY
Hiya hunnybunch!! I'm great thanx..hope you are too. Long time, no speak..have you missed me?! LOL
See you STILL haven't worked out who our best midfielder is yet!!
Agree about Ag..he is funny.
Somebody just told me that Maka's injured Ashley Cole in training. Didn't say where he heard it.
@ NICK
Seriously hope your source is lying on that one!!
I am all gravy lol thanks lolli.
A little bit...... ;)
He is hilarious - he seems to be getting funnier - for that reason alone i want him here next year - if he goes upstairs i think he should still do the press conferences.
See thats where you are wrong. See lamps is a TVR - finely tuned and amazing WHEN its working properly. Ze German you see is a bentley, big, strong and just keeps on trucking.
Seriously though, those two seem to be getting better - with them both on fire next year that is one scary partnership in the middle.
@ MUNKEY
What do you mean..WHEN it's working properly??!!!!!
Exactly how long has Ballack been any good for us? Going on for what now...5 months? Wow!! Compare that to Frank who's been AMAZING for YEARS!!!No compaison MUNKEY i'm afraid!! So take yourself into a corner and give yourself a ballacking!!!
Maka did a 2 footed tackle on Ash while playing a practice match, i've just seen it on SSN. Ash's ankle is heavily strapped and he looks a bit uneasy on it..and Maka was grinning from ear to ear as Ashley was rolling around in agony!!!
i love how defensive you are over lamps. it makes winding you up sooooo easy ;)
the same smile that gets Maka out of the yellow cards no doubt.
I'd defend him to the death honey..you KNOW that!!!LOL NOBODY picks on my boy without feeling the wrath of Lollipop!!!!
It's a good job we're buddies!!!!
Yup, the very same grin...
Maka's challenge on Ashley was a shocker - two footed onto Ashely's standing leg. If he's out then we're in the shit because Bridge has the defensive capability of Belletti when facing Ronaldo. We're fucked thanks to Maka.
KTBFFH
HABS
Not necessarily. We still have the best defensive partnership in the Prem IMO with JT and Riccy..they'll keep that Horse faced t**t under control, no worries.
I have been reading this site for quite a while now, but this is my first post. As an American, I feel humbled by the football knowledge routinely contained on this site, but I can sit by quietly no more. I'm stuck in Washington, DC for work and will not be able to watch the game at my usual spot, Nevada Smith's in NYC. Are there ANY true, die-hard Chelsea fans in the DC area who would like to watch this tomorrow? The thought of (a) watching it alone in my flat or (b) at a pub with 4 people or (gasp) Man U fans makes me depressed...I know you are out there...GO BLUES!
hey yankee - always nice to hear from a chels fan across the pond!!
skysports at the moment is painful - andy gray cant work his machine and its all man u - scholes heart story about missing the final all those years back. hmmmmm i wonder who the press want to win huh
Come on chels - shut them all up. Give us the bragging rights
Hi Yankeeblue..
Me and a couple of friends will be in Rumours in NW DC near Farragut North.
Mostly we are Chelsea..so you will be in good company....
Though i don't know what Rumours will be like (for total Chelsea vs Man Utd nos...at the loserpool game..there were more scousers)
I will be the only one in the pub wearing the blue FA cup winners 2007 Chelsea tie...
See you then...
Huge blow if it keeps him out. Bridge isn't as bas as Beletti, but he is no way near as good as Ashley defensively.
Paulite: Thank you so much! See you at Rumours! I'll be in a long-sleeve jersey and dark blue Adidas pullover...
Hiya YANKEEBLUE and PAULITE!!!! x x
Hope you both have fun watching JT lift the trophy!!!
Too bad we didnt take Ivanovic, Lets just pray that Ash can recover in time because Bridge isnt as good as AC defensively or offensively
@ Blue Peter the Great
If you do decide tomake the trip across, do make yourself known to us..... We should be easy to spot as we will be the 10 in blue, amongs the 100+ Mancs.
Really nervous now...Woke up at 5 this morning, must be practising for the 4-30 kickoff tomorrow!
But news about Cole.... I hope he is ok, because he generally keeps the winker very quiet.
@ Bluelollipop
You can be sure of that....
And once victory is seen...and you hear of an over-joyous celebration in DC over the beeb
Don't mistake it for an Obama celebration..and turn your telly off..
You might just see a wave of blue...
Sigh...in the States...that will be the day...(but victory will be ours)
@ PAULITE
Cool..i'll be listening out for yer!!! Victory, indeed WILL be ours. I can feel it in my water!
Chels 2 Man Ure 1
If Ash cant play then who would you lot like to fill in at LB? Paulo Ferreira, Julliano Belletti or Wayne Bridge? Id go with Paulo because we would already have Essien running forward alot from RB and Paulo could keep The winker quiet
Maka was so stupid to go in that hard in a training session, Jeezus
There will be full moon shining over Moscow...
May the lunar power turn the Red Square blue!
@ Greenlight
It would appear work can't do without me on Thursday so no motoring to Melbourne tonight... however to compensate my girlfriend has offered to watch the game with me in my lounge room and to provide extra special half time entertainment.... ;-))
Enjoy the experience of out singing the Mancs as we stuff them on the pitch...
I will be in Melbourne weekend 6-9 June to watch some Footy (yes I am a Melbourne supporter !) so I will pop into the Charles Dickens for pint or three one night.
KTBFFH
@ Peter
Nice work... If the game is as entertaining as the last Cup Final you might need the HT entertainment to keep you awake!
Queens Birthday weekend sounds good...Remind me a bit closer to the time via the blog.
If it is during the Euro's we might be down there for a game or two, so perhaps we can meet up.
Greenlight and Bluetone, Good to see im not the only one who cant sleep :)
@ Greenlight - Lol
One advantage we aussie located supporters have on our northerm hemisphere breathren in Europe is we get the opportunity to sleep away the final 8 hours or so before the game.. However getting to sleep and staying asleep may be a tad difficult given the anticipation of the possible joy to come. A large night cap might be required...
One thing for sure I will be waking up at 3:30am no matter how deep the sleep or how good the dream!
Why do we have all these sort of injury troubles before matches. Is there something wrong with the intensity of the training?
Fingers crossed that he is alright. We need him at his best to stop Ronaldo.
@ Jang
Looks like a very silly tackle by Maka.... Not sure what he was thinking!
Hope Cole is ok, because it will be a big loss if he isn't. His form has been great lately. We may need to start with Sheva, cos who else will make the goal line clearances!
A bit too exciting...any fans in L.A? Trying to figure out the best place to go to have a bit of atmposphere but not be covered in Mancs!
The look from Terry to Maka says it all ... Lets hope AC can bounce back and take his place as he really does have Ronaldo in his back pocket.
LINK
KTBFFH
Guys was A.Cole still able to walk properly after that? I dint see the video on his injury.
Apparantely the official line on AC (well Soccernet's official line anyway) is AC was able to finish the training session after a delay while his ankle was iced and strapped. Does that mean he is ok for the game.. who knows.. depends on whether it swells up in next 12 hours or so. He will be missed if he is unable to play.
For those who like silly general knowledge games try the BBC Ten To Tackle.. I scored 6/10.
LINK
I wonder who of you knows the answer to which pop star doesn't support Chelsea...
#79
Its damn frustrating. Here we are pumped up, excited and scared. Then Makalele decides to something mad and increase our worries. Praying hard for the next 12 hours.
I'm still a bloody nervous wreck, have been awake since 4am curled up in the fetal position sucking my thumb. How the hell can a football match do this to people, to coin a phrase from JM before last years FA Cup final. "Do you want to be happy during the game or happy after the game? I think we're all aboard the same boat on that one. COME ON CHELSEA!!
@ Jang
I reckon Maka is now pumped up, excited and scared judging by the look on JT's face when AC was on the ground !
It's not the first time a player has been injured in the pre game training. I would imagine all the players are fired up to impress the coach and get a starting berth or at least a spot on the bench. Still the smiling assassin does have his tackling moments....
Lets hope he does a similar job on Ronaldo in the first 5 minutes of the game if AC does not recover to play....
@ Jang
For anyone else that would be true but Maka has a habit of smiling his way out of trouble.. can't remember the last time he was red carded and he has committed some dubious fouls in his time.
I shall be shortly off home to cook curry for dinner (as I do before every Chelsea game), go for a walk along the beach to kill an hour or so, have a night cap and curl up in bed with my woman... whether i sleep is dependent on what happens next... But the chances are I will sleep at least some of the time while your poor buggers in Europe suffer through the day.
As JT says COME ON THE CHELS!
Morning sports fans, how is everyone feeling today? Anxious? Excited? Numb?
I have made my whole team wear blue, we have the scalves over the PCs and it has pissed off the manc fans no end. Classic.
Personally i cant sit still and despite looking like an idiot in my suit with a chelsea scalf on, i couldnt actually careless.
COME ON CHELS
Brilliant.
I'm now having to re-write my glowing document titled 'Maka - Thanks for everything'. I'm toying with changing 'everything' to 'nothing'.
What a complete idiot. There isn't a defender I've seen in the past few seasons that has Ronaldo in his pocket as much as Cole. Sure the bloke is a few kopecks short of a rouble (if you're going to cheat on Cheryl, do it with one of the handful of people in the World who are better than her) but Ronnie hasn't had a sniff in any of the games against us.
It's certainly cause for concern, and will probably go a long way towards deciding who wins tonight. With him, great chance; without him, nowhere near as good.
In a report on their website, chelseafc.com, about the training session the club said: "In a challenge with Claude Makelele in front of hundreds of cameras and the world football press, Ashley Cole hurt his right ankle.
"He was treated, it was tested, then strapped - but after consultation between (Avram) Grant, club doctor Bryan English and physios Dave Hancock and Thierry Laurent - Cole resumed and took full part in the final training game - only disappearing down the tunnel after the players had listened to Avram's address and been stood-down for a final kickaround."
Only 10 hours til Kick Off......
Is it too early to go to the pub now!!!
I think my wife is going to stab me or tie me to the chair as I can't sit still.
Bloody Hell, it wasn't like this when we went to Shrewsbury!
I've never been this nervous in my life. Seriously. I've been having that feeling in my tummy since Tuesday morning.
I really hope we win. I really hope we do. Losing to Liverpool last year was the worst I've ever felt. Ever. Seriously. I dont know, maybe cuz i'm still young. Losing tonight will beat that. But let's not think that way.
I think this post is really brilliant. I feel so much better after reading it. Me being the only Chelsea fan in probably my entire school, it's hard to relate with others. Here, I really feel like I can relate with all of you. It's great.
I think we can win it. The players will be really determined to win this trophy. It's the EUROPEAN CUP!! Missing out on the Premier League would have added to that determination. And I'm sure they'll all be on their A games tonight. Ballack and A. Cole are perfect examples. They know how losing this final is. They will not want to lose another one. And the others like Drogba, J. Cole, Terry, Lampard, Essien, the list goes on. They've never won the European Cup and I can bet you they'll be ever so determined to win it tonight.
I've said this all season and I'll say it again. Most of the time players win you big matches, not tactics. Our players will be driven to win it. I have no doubt about that.
And if they dont, then let's just be happy we made it to the final. Really. I know it's hard but yeah, you have to find a way to cure the pain. And if we lose, coming here this time unlike last year will make me feel better, definitely. Like you said, I'd love to see a happy ending to this amazing journey. But it's really down to the team and the footballing gods. Let's hope they're on our side.
Listening to the United players insulting us and being over arrogant really annoyed me. Do your talking on the pitch, bitches. Lets hope Vidic regrets calling Drogba a diver. Rafa Benitez did. ;>
It's an amazing chance for the Chelsea players to write history. And they have every reason to think they can do it. I hope they will and I think we will. Hopefully...
COME ON GUYS!! YOU CAN DO IT!!
KEEP THE BLUE FLAG FLYING HIGH!
I woke up at 4.30 this morning worrying about the ankle of a man I've never met (and would probably cross the street to avoid if I did). This is bloody lunacy.
Feeling a bit numb, I think the brain is just holding the emotions back, otherwise will go mad before kick off. Had a bad dream last night about 2 teams playing football game.
The good thing is if I have a “bad” dream, always opposite happens.
Bit worried though about the injuries. Incredible bad luck last week with JT and yesterday with Mad Mac. Hope the JT and AC will go trough the whole game,
No doubt there will be some painkillers taken.
The major part in the game is going to play MU arrogance. They think they already won it!!! That is good! This will make the Blue Warriors go out for WAR!
C’mon the Chels
I've now moved into feeling physically sick and there are over 9 hours to go !!!
No doubt Ashley will be smacked off his head on horse tranquilizers or something to numb the pain.
If today is the last game of their Chelsea career for any of the players, all I can say is MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE AS A WINNER !!!
JD
Your not the first man whose head has been turned by a shapely ankle.
Its good to see you coming to terms with areas of your sexuality that perhaps have lain dormant for years.
I don't want to post links to sites with dubious content on here, but the joy of the internet is that you can generally satisfy you curiosity for all sorts of strange, ephemeral and downright unsavoury things.
Just one question, did the foot have a sock on it or not?..........
btw
Rather than get stressed and worried by all the nonesense coverage on SSN 5Live etc in the build up to the game, I found a programme last night that kept talking about how wonderful Chelsea is. There was lots of talk about medals and no mention of Manchester anywhere. It was about a flower show but it heplped generate positive thoughts.
Ahh just smell the roses...
Someone update us with the latest developments on A.Cole. Im going to take a nap.
BB
It was de-socked and being tended to by some soft-handed gentlemen with a magic spray. I thought it best not to mention it to Mrs. Dyer.
I'm liking the flower show idea. A well-trimmed bush is always a welcome distraction* when one's mind is in the kind of turmoil caused by days like today.
* Well, Mark isn't here so someone has to keep the site's Carry On-ism quota up...
Not that I'm an advocate of post-policing, but do we have a blog contingency plan in place for the proverbial shit load of abuse that undoubtedly will come our way should we finish runners up tonight ???
I want to discuss the game with the normal crew in the morning, not sift through the rubbish of some sort of tourettes-inspired down-pour...

We do miss him at times like this.
I understand he's over there currently filming Carry On Putin It About......
.....no its all right I know where the door is
Hi all,
It is truly a loooong day, I cannot get myself to laugh/smile, I am just numb! its so good that I am busy at work, but suddenly somehow I close the windows on my computer screen and I see THAT pic of Drogs.Riccy & Lamps..and suddenly there is this feeling in the belly..am i scared? am I excited?I have no words to describe how I am feeling, but thanks to this lovely( & amazing) blog, we are all connected, and we feel the same, I am getting shivers down my spine, chills(will go and shut off the AC at work!)..Blue should be the colour of the day, and i hope we will be here tomorrow..and we will be so happy, and this blog will help us share those emotions as well,
Thanks Jon, Tony, Mark..you guys are great!! keep up the good work...Come on Chels...Chelski all the way...Blue for life...

@Biggs (9) - not often one gets the chance of squeezing a Ramones reference into proceedings…
not often proceedings are the cl final.
Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh.
I've broken my usual routine and had a pub lunch on a day that's not Friday.
Two pints, coupled with some 'not-at-all-one-sided' Sky based biased, I had made my mind up that I would be shutting myself off from the outside world for a few hours this evening.
Now my neighbour has changed his 'I cant make it' response to a 'I'll be there at 7' one, and I'm bricking it big time.
I'm not sure I'll make it past 6 o'clock at this rate....
Another good one from the JD stable…thanks again.
I wonder whats going thru the players’ minds...like DD, hope he’s hungry enough to silence Vibitch and Looney...JC should know that he has a major role to play in providing quality service to DD et al, no theatrics please...the one player that worries me in the Manure team is Scarface, (or is it Scarneck?) I see him as the real threat if he gets to play...
Little tricks playing on my mind...would I want an early Chelsea goal, knowing that it often makes the team drop a gear and invite pressure?
Or would I prefer to have a stalemate till mid/late 2nd half for Chelsea to take the lead?
Cant make up my mind on both...guess any would do, so long as we win...
The world will be watching (even in the war and quake torn lands of Africa and Asia), for the duration of the match most parts of the globe will be still, and focused on football...all we ask is that the players GIVE IT THEIR ALL AND PLAY FOR EACH OTHER...cos if they do, then not even two (2) manure squads can stop them...that much I believe...
And one last thing....if I were AG and this game for any reason runs to penalty kicks (which I pray it doesn’t), I’d bring in Carlo and take out Cech...that is bound to throw a psychological blow in the Manure camp...besides, Cech has shown he’s not a penalty stopper so we have nothing to lose in trying Carlo...I sincerely pray that it doesn’t come to this though.
This is our date with destiny, a destiny which would be in the hands of 11 men for about 90mins plus...we are due another round of joyful tears and I pray the boys in blue oblige us...
Spuds had their laf, so did Pompey and Manure...I want the last and longest laf...
Always Blue!
You have to be kidding. Edge of my seat. How much of an arse is Drogba????
Well Done boys, outplayed Man U 2nd half & extra time.
BUT - why were Ashley & JT taking penalties in the 1st 5? Anelka & Malouda have got a lot to answer for.
I'm gutted, 1 kick away from winning.
I don't blame JT, he's the heart & soul of Chelsea, but he shouldn't have been put in that situation.
I felt I had to shake the hand of a Man U shirt-wearing fan at Turnpike Lane bus station, on my way home from the Kings Road to Enfield, bit I couldn't look her in the eye as I knew we should have won.
Did anyone else feel 'Gavin Peacock Wembley 1994' moments as we hit the woodwork twice during the game?
I feel like shit, and my only consolation is that one day we'll win the Champions League as reigning English Champions.
Keep up the Blog everyone, we're still The Best Team The World Has Ever Seen.

Great way to start the build up JD... I have a really good feeling about this game which is probably the worst thing I can say...anyway as you say whatever the result, just to have the experience of watching our beloved blues walk out onto the Luzhniki pitch and hear that emotion charged anthem is a dream come true for this fan of 39 years and a win will be very much the cherry on top.. particularly if lamps scores the winner.
I can remember as a 9 year old boy watching our first European triumph against Real Madrid on the Cup winners Cup and then dreaming of our team winning the European Cup when Liverpool were dominating. Now it is our turn... finally and just maybe I will be watching JT lift old big ears on Thursday morning OZ time.
KTBFFH
Just a question here: Given the state of the pitch in Moscow, whos advantage is that? If it goes into extra time, are we in a more advantageous position to seal the match?
