So, how was it for you? The 2006/07 season review

Friday, 01 June 07, 01:49 PM · Comments (144)

Did the earth move? Was the season lit with fireworks? Did Andriy Shevchenko seduce you with silky skills? Did Didier Drogba’s drive and dynamism send shivers down your spine? Did the essence of Michael Essien send you into a dreamy haze?

Or did it seem like the interminable season from hell at times? Did you look longingly at Arsenal in February after the Carling Cup final and sigh with a hint of envy that their campaign was over and their fans could enjoy each game as a one-off encounter? Or, like me, are you just plain knackered and thankful the whole bloody shebang is finally over?

Don’t get me wrong, one week after the season has finished and I’m already declaring Sky Sports a dead zone until August and no amount of “Masters [sic] Football” will tempt me, although the coverage of the US Open might. Saturday nights with no Match of the Day? Bloody hell, I’ll have to start talking to the family now!

In the continuing spirit of our format for reviewing games I thought I’d follow suit for the end of season review, with a raft of player ratings chucked in at the end for good measure.

The good

  • Didier Drogba. Without any shadow of a doubt this was his best season in any league, anywhere during his career. A Golden Boot award for top scorer in the Premier League, and a similar award for scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final (I think they still award one) alongside a host of good press coverage for changes in attitude show him to be worth every penny of the £24m we paid three years ago. There is little doubt we’d be two trophies down on this year's haul without his goals in both finals. Can he repeat this? Well why not? He may not have the silky ball skills of Thierry Henry, or the close control of Wayne Rooney, or the dancing skills of Cristiano Ronaldo, but he does have something more than these players by the bucket load — spirit and fight. Simply put the man has never given up at any point this season, whether it’s scoring critical goals, making vital assists or simply being an outstanding defender. He is an inspiration and a true Chelsea legend. In a word — fantastic.
  • Michael Essien. From being a pariah, shamelessly hounded by the shabby shady lowlifes of the press for a single poor tackle in his first season, and subsequently punished retrospectively by UEFA, his true nature has come to the fore and he has shown himself to be a simply outstanding world class player who would be a first choice at any club in the world. Dignified, selfless, hard-working, spirited, strong, powerful and skilful. The perfect player? Not yet... but it won’t be long. Oh how I wish he were English.
  • Petr Cech. Alex Ferguson used to espouse with regularity the importance of Peter Schmeichel in Manchester United's title winning heyday and we now have the new, improved Schmeichel. I will be honest and say I had my doubts last season, and he still has the downright annoying habit of hoofing the ball up the field when playing it to a defender would be a better option, but his saves this year have been as vital as Drogba’s goals in keeping us in the hunt for three trophies for so long. All this after suffering a life threatening injury against Reading early in the season makes “The Cat in the Hat” a truly remarkable man and athlete.
  • The overall effort. Despite a promising start to the season, marred early on by the strange defeat at Middlesbrough, it’s obvious the effect of the World Cup on more or less the whole squad, alongside political shenanigans in the stand-off between Jose Mourinho and Roman Abramovich, the intense anti-Chelsea press bias and the constant crippling injury list had a huge effect on our ruthless capacity to win. Having said that it’s hard to do anything other than stand back in open mouthed admiration for the two domestic trophies from three, second place in the Premier League, and a semi-final position in the Champions League. Could any other team have done that under such pressure?
  • Jose Mourinho. He appears below as well, such is the paradox of the man. He’s almost an oxymoron (a disastrously brilliant tactician maybe, or an incredibly lucky genius). One thing is for sure, he is a fighter and man who will use whatever armoury is available to get the right result. In a season where we have not had all our key players (Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Joe Cole, Robben) he has been able to adopt a fall back position similar to George Graham’s old Arsenal team, or the dominating German national teams of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. It ain’t entertaining, but it’s bloody effective and it’s got us two trophies this year, despite not having the real flair players available, or the spine of our defence. Could anyone else do that? Does any other coach have the balls to switch styles from one extreme to another with such assuredness, just to ensure the delivery of the right results? Thought not.
  • The trophy haul. To some of the younger blog readers this may seem a season of failure. But I’ve been there since 1970 when we won our first FA Cup and only our second major trophy in sixty-five years of existence, the first being our only previous League win in 1955 — for which I wasn't about! After that FA Cup we won the old European Cup Winners' Cup the following year beating the already mighty Real Madrid. In the 60’s and 70’s the ECWC was always second behind the European Cup (now the Champions League) and ahead of the Fairs Cup (now the UEFA Cup). In 1972 we should have won the League Cup but somehow lost to Stoke City who had a bloke called George Eastham playing that day who though was only 36, looked older than my grandad. He scored the winning goal that broke a young boy’s heart and started the trophy drought of twenty-five bloody long years until Ruud Gullit’s 1997 team finally won the FA Cup again and roused the sleeping giant from its slumber. That year seemed massive to me because in my eyes it put us back on the map. It got us noticed again for the right reasons and not hooligan fans or the embarrassing rantings of Ken Bates. There followed a period of another FA Cup under Gianluca Vialli, plus a Cup Winners' Cup and a League Cup and a vague threat to the Manchester United/Arsenal duopoly. Back then, just ten short years ago, we were happy with one trophy but then the Claudio Ranieri years seemed to be taking us back into the coma. But in three years under Mourinho we have collected each domestic trophy, six in all. To that young boy in 1970 this would have been dreamland and once again I say to you, two out of three ain’t bad. Neither is two out of four.

The bad

  • The injury list. At times I thought we’d been transformed into Newcastle, whose tiresome perennial injury problems have seen away Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Ruud Gullit, Bobby Robson, Graeme Souness, and Glen Roeder. It’s hard to believe we’ve had a similar year to their previous ten in terms of injuries. It just seemed that no week would go by without yet more bad news on the state of some of our key players. A thinned squad didn’t help, and the intransigence of board and manager may have been costly in terms of the Premiership and Champions League. I hope this was a one-off and that next year we don’t even get five percent of the problems of this year. Then, just maybe we’ll have a better crack at all four trophies.
  • Jose Mourinho. Don’t get me wrong here. I love the guy. Hell, he can come round and marry my daughter if he wants (well, maybe next year when she’s sixteen). But sometimes he seems afflicted by the ghost of Ranieri in his team selections and his tactics. Sure he near enough always rectifies this but maybe his inexperience or ego just flirts too close to self-importance and danger. And sometimes, just sometimes I wish the PR people at the club would stop him from saying the wrong things. The barbed comment about Ronaldo’s alleged poor education was uncalled for, no matter what we might think of the cheating winker-diver (which is at least true).
  • Khalid Boulahrouz. Oh dear, oh dear. I thought I’d seen the worst defender ever in Asier Del Horno (Doug Rougvie excepted here) but along came The Cannibal. Hmm... he presumably got this nickname because he likes to take chunks out of people for pleasure. I’d let him go before he becomes another Winston Bogarde (Do'h! Maybe I’m being hard on Del Horno having just remembered this complete donkey).
  • Losing the Premiership. Let's face it Manchester United won it because we lost it. The piss-poor Christmas with three draws and silly defeats at Middlesbrough and Spurs told me it wasn’t destined for us this year, and despite my many healthy debates with the Blue Evangelists on this site, who were even using lunar mythology to convince themselves we could do it, I can now gloat and say “I told you so”. That gives me no pleasure because we were more than good enough to win again this year even with the injuries. The spark and hunger had gone for some and I firmly believe the pain of losing this will bring us back stronger next year. But just remember this... each year it will get harder to win as the others start to compete in the market with us.

Player ratings (main squad only)

  • Petr Cech: 9/10 — A very brave man whose world class saves played a key part in our trophy wins and our extended challenge in the Premier and Champions League.
  • Khalid Bouhlarouz: 4/10 — “Oh dear” just doesn’t seem strong enough does it? A bright game against Barcelona was followed by him being humiliated and his confidence being publicly dismantled in Spain by Ronaldinho. Never really recovered from that and very probably on his way.
  • Paulo Ferreira: 7/10 — Spent most of the season sidelined or just being plain useless. Was he carrying an injury? Was his mind elsewhere? Who knows, but one thing is for sure he finished the season looking more like the Paulo we saw two years ago who was the best right-back in Europe.
  • Wayne Bridge: 8.5/10 — The number one left-back in Europe, if not the world. Frankly brilliant.
  • John Terry: 8.5/10 — Sidelined by serious injury during the winter and injured again due to his own bravery in the Carling Cup final. Never quite got back to his imperious best but that may be as much from the season’s length than anything else.
  • John Obi Mikel: 9/10 — A revelation and surely a sure fire top class player of the future. Plays like someone with ten years more experience and has only got to learn to control the red mist tendency. Wayne who?
  • Shaun Wright-Phillips: 8/10 — Looked doomed for much of the season. Annoyingly kept running the ball out of play as if suffering from whitewash blindness. When he did get past players his final ball was... well shit is the only word that fits here really. Then, the injury situation worsened and he got his best chance and boy did he take it. His tackling has improved as he has learned to “roam” the midfield behind the strikers and not limit himself to the wings. A big but welcome turn around.
  • Frank Lampard: 7.5/10 — 21 goals belie a season of only sporadic brilliance amongst swathes of mediocrity compared to previous years. Looked knackered a lot of the time and the World Cup seemed to smash his confidence. Let's hope a good break gets him back into the real form we know he is capable of.
  • Joe Cole: 6/10 — A terrible season ruined by injury. Boy did we miss his trickery and verve.
  • Didier Drogba: 9.8/10 — For me, the best player of our season. I’ve said it all above but will add one more word. Magnificent.
  • Salomon Kalou: 7/10 — Shows flashes of brilliance but this is too often overshadowed by poor decisions and some frankly dire finishing or passing. A good bet for the future, but needs to work harder and gain more experience.
  • Arjen Robben: 6/10 — See Joe Cole.
  • Michael Ballack: 7/10 — At the start I thought we’d bought yet another duffer, but when he was absent I started to understand his contribution. The fact that he doesn’t seem to blow his own trumpet makes it all the more admirable. His “laissez-faire” attitude reminds me of Marcel Desailly. I expect next season to be the one where he gets noticed for the right reasons.
  • Andriy Shevchencko: 5/10 — Oh dear. Flashes of the player that everyone in Serie A either feared or admired, but for the most part seemed to struggle with the pace of the Premiership. It now transpires he’s been carrying an injury all season, but surely that begs the question of why we didn’t operate at the beginning and get him fully fit for the run-in. One more season and that’s it if he doesn’t improve.
  • Ashley Cole: 7/10 — Showed little of the form that projected him to England’s number one status at left-back but to be fair the requirements at Chelsea are very different than at Arsenal. Will have to work very hard to unseat Wayne Bridge.
  • Michael Essien: 9.7/10 — An absolute marvel this season and very close to being my player of the year. Pipped as my player of the year only by Drogba’s goal contribution, but has showed great dignity and versatility when asked, and unlike William Gallas has not complained once.
  • Ricardo Carvalho: 9.7/10 — I’d always been a bit sniffy about him previously. He always seemed to give away the penalties or the silly free kicks through petulant shirt pulling or late clumsy tackles. However, this season he has been the rock of the defence and did a marvellous job when Terry was away injured and in every game he played. With him we’re solid in defence, without him the armour has a chink. I think it’s fair to say that he was sorely missed when he himself got ‘flu for the Liverpool game at Anfield and then injured for the last four games of the season. Another close candidate for my player of the year, and the archetypal unsung hero.
  • Geremi: 7/10 — Points awarded here for unswerving loyalty but when offered the chance at right-back to make the position his own he failed to take it, despite an initially bright start. Perhaps his attacking midfield instincts are too strong but it's hard to see a place next season.
  • Claude Makalele: 6/10 — Nearly a candidate for 'The bad' section until I realised he wasn’t actually “bad” per se, but merely poor in comparison to his previous three seasons. I firmly believe he was affected by the French World Cup effort and that maybe this was the season that showed he’d gone on just that little bit too far. He might be worth a one-year “off the bench” contract but unless his distribution improves markedly, and he stops giving away unnecessary free kicks in dangerous areas then maybe it’s time to shake his hand, give him a warm thank-you and let him go.
  • Lassana Diarra: 8/10 — An odd one this. He has a temperament issue and an attitude problem as well as shown by his fine for missing training. However he is a scintillating player who did a very good job at right-back and filled in for Makelele quite well. Inexperienced but a player I’d put some faith in because as his experience grows so will the rewards for us.
  • Carlo Cudicini: 7/10 — A loyal servant who showed great bravery in the game against Reading when he got knocked out making a vital clearance. In all honesty though he’s not the future and his age and lack of games must be a factor in his continuing capacity as the number two keeper. I would be looking to promote from within for the number two slot, and as a reward for unswerving loyalty offer Cudicini a job alongside Silvinho Lauro coaching the keepers and the youngsters.
  • Hilario: 6/10 — Got more games than he, or anyone was expecting. Not one for the future though. He is an average shot stopper but aerially he doesn’t command at crosses, tends to flap/slap at the ball and patently doesn’t inspire confidence in the defenders. He was noticeably castigated by Terry several times during games and when Carvalho also has something to say you know he isn’t the answer.

Final thoughts

Overall this season has been a paradox in itself. At times both deeply frustrating, undeniably drab, massively exciting, rewarding and yet unrewarding as well. It’s been very long for those of us with World Cup allegiances and I reckon I was as exhausted as the players as we hit the final run-in. I’ve kicked every ball, felt every tackle, headed every cross, whilst simultaneously screaming my love for the club, deriding the useless referees and linesmen and defending my club against the abuse of other fans and the press and TV. The players are lucky, they only have to kick a ball around once or twice a week. For me it never stops. Plus I have the added stress of knowing that no matter what I do, what superstitions I have, what prayers I may mutter despite my avowed agnosticism I have no influence whatsoever on the team. At least those picked can try and make a difference.

So, to wrap up this season until I can think of something else to post to the blog, here’s some thoughts on ins and outs and my predictions for next season. I reserve the right to perform u-turns on any of these on a pure whim or because they’re wrong!

In: David Villa or Carlos Tevez. Believe me I think one or the other will be arriving freshly scrubbed and ready to wear the blue shirt of success. Also in will be Micah Richards or Glen Johnson at right-back, PSV Eindhoven’s Alex as cover for the centre-backs as well as the already acquired Steve Sidwell to cover Essien or John Obi Mikel. Not a tough job then Steve!

Out: This is far tougher than I thought. Paulo Ferreira may have got a reprieve with his end of season form but that just makes it even more mysterious as to what had happened for the first three quarters of it. If he stays then Johnson will be sold and Richards bought in. Shaun Wright-Phillips was a banker as well but he turned it around big time. Definitely going will be Geremi and Khalid Boulahrouz and my other tip would be Claude Makelele as the future without him is already sorted with Lassana Diarra, Essien or Mikel ready to play that role.

Trophies. Providing we don’t suffer such a bad injury year then I think the Premiership will be back with us despite the current Manchester United spending spree. As for the cups, well I think common sense might prevail and we will follow the models set by the others in the Big Four — in other words we’ll downgrade our desire in these. The reason? Abramovich and Mourinho may have different opinions on each other but both want the Champions League. Roman because he wants us to be spoken of and revered with the other big European clubs, Jose because he wants to win and savour the victory this time without the pressure of knowing he is moving on. I believe Jose will be with us until 2010 when his contract ends. There is no better coach. I think next year, as seeds we will be gracing the final and this time there’ll be no mistakes. Manchester United will be second again, Liverpool will be third and the biggest shock will be either Spurs, Newcastle or maybe even a dogged Everton side pipping Arsenal for fourth place.

Until next time, keep the Blue Flag flying high.

I've been wating with bated breath for the season review to arrive, convinced I 'd have loads to write about.

But I dont. At least I think I dont.

Tony, you've summed most of it up, and save for one or two, I agree with your review.

Riccy C was pretty immense this season, but if I rememebr correctly, a stupid, mis-timed attempt at a two footed tackle after the whistle (and ball) had gone (against Bolton ???) were the un-doing of his season. How we missed him in the Champs League.

I'm not (and doubt I ever will be) an advocate of Kalou. To me he epitomises an average player, and I refuse to believe he offers anything that will turn him into a world-class player. 7/10 may sum up his season, but in the limited space I saw them, Sinclair offered a more direct threat with his raw pace, and Sahar's goals for Israel demonstrated better finishing. Neither should be further down the pecking order than him at the start of next season (as long as Sinclairs injury heals).

At times, I've been frustrated by Jose's outbursts as we tend to become the laughing stock each and every time. But I love him. And my non-Chelsea supporting friends love him. In fact everyone seems to agree that, despite his insistence to incite hatred against our club, everyone loves him. It will be a dark, dark day when he finally departs the Bridge.

As for in's and out's, I think we've seen all the signings in (providing Pizarro is a definite). I'd love to see Tevez, even more Villa (hell even Torres) but I just cant see we'll be shelling out the £20m+ required to sign any of them.

We'll wave goodbye to one or two who deserve hearty applause for their efforts (Makelele, Cudicini), and one or two who we can't get rid of quick enough (Boulahrouz, Geremi, Ferreira).

The media and other assorted reprobates will have you believe it's been unsuccessful.

We've won two trophies. Maybe not the two you'd pick at the start of the season to win, but two nonetheless. That's one more than ManUSA. Two more than Arsenal and two more than Jabba Benitez's lot. So who's been unsuccessful ???

Alex,

Point taken. Maybe not 'blame', just an unfortunate outcome to a single, hot-headed moment.

Not usually his sort of thing, just more noticeable when he's not there !!!!

Great summing up Tony, obviously your weeks rest in France has done you the power of good.

Nothing really to add, agree with the vast majority of your points, and can only look forward to the start of next season.

Also just a quick mention to the main contributors to the blog.. Nick, JD and Tony.

Thank you guys for the effort you put into the articles, which are informative and thought provoking. Will look forward to more of the same next season, and in the meantime... have a great summer!

My compliments for a great review. I think this was one of Chelsea’s best seasons, two trophies a second place in the PL and a place on the CL semi final. Given all the handicaps we had, it is most surely a great achievement from the team. Regarding Mourinho, even being his fan, I have to say that in one other occasion I would have happier if he had acted more diplomatic. But then again we already noticed that he is not a regular trainer. He is a skilful tactician, a marvellous leader and motivator that galvanizes the team, extremely organized and with an almost Schizophrenic tendency for perfection. Who knows trainer that would be able do endure all the pressure he was exposed and still get such results??. For times almost looked like he was carrying the club on his shoulders, and being a great club it’s surely not light.
Resuming, I thing the man is a genius if not an intellectual that just have to be accepted like he is, with his floss like any other man. I just love him and I’m sorry for the day we will wake up with out him…. It just will be too boring.

We've just signed Claudio Pizarro from Bayern Munich. I'm reserving my judgment until I see a few games, but on Youtube he looks decent enough, a poacher in the same vein as Crespo.

We'll need him for cover while Drogs and Kalou are away at the ANC, so he has my full support.

Hopefully, my contribution to the blog will be more considerable next season than one entry at New Year! That's a personal target at least.

This season has been a sharp learning curve for me, and though I do feel a slight tinge of disappointment from knowing full well we could have won all four, we will be back and better in August and surely that is something to look forward to. :)

P.S. The team's effort and achievement this season has been astounding, which I am fully appreciative of, so I don't want to give the impression that I'm ungrateful for how things have turned out. Without a doubt, this season has been my most enjoyable so far as a Chelsea supporter.

Every up and down has only served to consolidate my adoration for all things Blue. My membership will definitely be renewed next season, and it looks highly likely that I'll be relocating further south so I might even be able to get to some games! Managing to convert a close friend to the cause isn't bad either, as it was getting a bit lonely up here ;)! (I think the rollercoaster of the Christmas period snared him.)

Well I can't really comment too much on a Chelsea season review. But I think to say we won it because you lost it is unfair and actually inaccurate. It's not like we won by one point which included six flukey points taken off you.

We gained 89 points which included one defeat to West Ham when the title was won. There is also an argument that the points different flattered you more than it flattered us. We won some games with last minute goals but not to the degree you did.

Mourinho blamed injuries and yet your defensive record was almost as good as last season and injuries are unfortunately part and parcel of the game.

For me, you lacked the ability to break teams down as much you have done in the past. The ability to dominate games and force issues seemed a bit lacking to me. I'll be very pleased if Mourinho agrees with your conclusion as it might mean he won't address the problems in your build-up play.

Put it this way, in the last two seasons, watching Chelsea was not only watching a supreme defensive unit but also one that largely seemed in control. Everyone knew what they were doing and you scored from a variety of players and plays. This season, your defensive play was almost as good (if a little less assured) but your midfield and attack seemed much less coherent.

You didn't lose it this season. You were just not as good as you have been or needed to be to catch a United team which managed to get a good start and suprised a lot of people with their stamina.

Take credit for Essien and Drogba and Chech etc and for the team spirit etc but I think it is pretty inaccurate to talk of this season as a season as anything other than a title which you lost to the better team.

Anyway here's to a good next season. Pizarro is an excellent buy imo - experienced and efficient (the perfect Mourinho signing?)

Good comments DE - nice to hear from you again with sensible stuff form another perspective.

But you're wrong!

We lost the PL with 3 draws over Xmas (that's the 6 points) at home to Reading and Fulham and a stupid defeat to Boro' . Spurs beat us fair and square despite our superiority but even MUFC know how that feels.

You make a good point about an invincible defence that suddenly exposes its chinks, and its undeniable that your observation is bang on the money. But overall I would maintain that a squad with Robben, Joe Cole, Carvalho, Terry, Cech et al all fit would more than have matched your side. The point o be made here is that the MUFC dynasty was built by Sir Rednose and in the years when you didn't win you finished second until we broke the MUFC/Arsenal duopoly and made it a triopoly . I would argue that in the last 4 years (the first under Claudio "Tactical Fuckwit" Ranieri) we have finished Second, First, First, Second - do you see a pattern? next year I think we will not suffer the bad luck with injuries to the extent of this year and the challenge will be between us and you. We will win because I believe Mourinho has the measure of Sir Rednose tactically as he has done with Tubby Benitez (in the PL at least) and Wenger. I think you appreciate that the Pl is better for JM breaking up the little gang and raising the bar even higher.

lastly my point was that JM isn't worried about beiong "boring" when required if it gets results. Sir Rednose does this himself when required. The exception is Wenger who thinks that football should be "art on a field" before the business of winning and his folly in this belief has been well exposed for the last 2 years at least.

DE - next year we'll see who the best is, but excluding any surprises you know that defending a Title is very hard and that under the laws of probability you are less likely to maintain the title. So be honest and say who else is truly likely to win other than us?

Thanks for the debate!

I've just realised, the word Triopoly (as used in my review) does not exist ( to describe the Arsenal, MUFC and CFC domination of the EPL) - the word should be (apparently) Triumvurate.

Well written. That lull in December was heartbreaking when it came to it. I must join in the dissent for Kalou as a 7.Sheva's acclimation problems gave Kalou a chance to really make a showing and he simply failed to do that. Kalou seems to lack the instinct of a striker. He passes or dances when he should shoot and shoots when he has no space.

SWP was incisive near the end of the season, it will be interesting to see where he finds space next year. He and Sheva seemed to work well together and I think both will rebound nicely next term.

Tony it is actually - Triumvirate (from Latin, "of three men") is commonly used to describe a political regime dominated by three powerful individuals.
It seems that Lampard is looking for a way out. Today papers hint that he is leaving. Well, somehow I do not care a lot about it.

Tony Glover, you are fab! i love this site and only came across it when i was reading the F.A Cup reviews on the AOL homepage. i log on to it daily now to hear everyone`s p.o.v on all things Chelsea, some welcome, some not-so welcome( man u-re, liverscum fans take note). it`s great that the site is easily accessible to other fans, after all, it`s always a good thing to hear their comments, but God! has anyone ever tried to get on one of their sites?! you need bloody security code clearance just to log on!! pretty obvious that unless you`re a supporter/subscriber, then your views aren`t welcome. one west ham site i come across welcomes your view (only if you`re a fan) and threatens to use physical violence if they ever find out where you live if you`re not!! that`s after they warn you to f$£!k off the site first and take your views with you! charming and classy, as always. it`s ever likely everyone hates them. can`t wait for the new season to start, know it`s a way off yet but i`m starting to get withdrawls. great to see J.T score that goal against Brazil last night, trust a Chelsea boy to stick one in the net! fab! still a bit confused as to what the hell Smith was doing on the pitch. who`s stupid idea was it to put that moron in the starting line-up? he`s a pile of shite! and as for Wes Brown.. less said about him the better i think. that pratt had only been on the field 8 seconds and almost screwed up. and they play for the country`s best team? laughable! i`ve read today that Juventus aren`t willing to pay the 7m transfer fee for Lamps because that would mean they`d have to pay him £140,000 a week. good!! i really hope he stays, Lamps is right up there with J.T, Drogs, Carvalho in my books and i really think Chelsea would be a sorrier place without him. up the Chels xxx

Great article and all mate, but lets be serious, Shaun Wright Philips and 8/10 for the season and Lampard a 7.5??? Are you joking? At points SWP has looked a shadow of his former self, but Lampard has been downright incredible for Chelsea this year - 62 games(a new record) 21 goals(a new personal record) 20 assists (same old). I'm sorry that people have started to turn against the man. He's been over looked this season. He, Drogba and Essien have carried the team all season. They've avoided injury and dragged the team through seriously tough times.
I really do feel for Frank, what more thas the bloke got to do for people to stand up and recognise what a Chelsea legend the guy is. People will only realise how important and great he was for the team when he's gone. And that will be a sad day.

Tony

Thanks for the reply.

I think there are two issues here: one, why did Chelsea not win the league this season? And, two, who will be favourites next season?

I agree that if I had to put my money somewhere it would be on Chelsea next season. You have finished 2nd, 1st, 1st and 2nd. So obviously (assuming the squad doesn't get decimated) you have to be favourites.

However, that definitely doesn't mean that you were the best team this season or that you 'lost' the title. For me that means the season was dominated more by your incompetence at critical points than anything else. Yet with two games left we had 88 points and could have overhauled your points total in one of your championship winning seasons. We scored a huge number of goals, and had a very good defensive record. We also coped with significant injuries towards the end.

That is not the story of a team 'losing' a title. Think more Blackburn taking the title from us in 95 or Real Madrid nabbing it from Sociedad in Spain.

You lost because of various reasons all of which are part and parcel of the game. You lost because of injuries yes, but also because Mourinho made poor transfer decisions. He bough Boulawhatever and then didn't play him forcing him to move his best player into a position where he was fine but not great. Reminds me of when Fergie messed up with Stam and then brought Keane back into defence. No one called that United losing the title just bad decisions by United of which other teams took full advantage. Mourinho also let both Duff and Gudjohnsen go and then moaned about a thin squad when Cole was injured. Again bad decisions. Doing so much business at the end of the transfer window was also a bad idea as it was when United panicked and bought such dross as Djemba Djemba and Kleberson.

Also in the games you drew, its hard to claim you were unlucky. The Villa game was awful and you barely created anything. The Reading game also was probably a fair result too. Moreover had you won at Newcastle and then taken Bolton at home you would have taken the race to the wore. You had almost a full squad and you knew what you had to do and you still failed. That is not losing it, that is just not being quite good enough this season imo.

I have no doubt you will be the favourites next season. Although if we get a striker then the squad looks good to me. And we still have to see what Tubby does with his new money. So yes you will be favourites next season in all probability but that doesn't mean you 'lost' the title this season.

Do all these free transfers imply one big signing for you on the way?

what do you guys think about the times online's numerical ranking of all the players in the premiership? their ranking of lampard was shockingly high and supports hazzabean's assessment of him this season--yet, i can't really say that i saw any evidence that he was that much better than the average as the system claims...

Poor review from a guy that is a fan... but doesn't get football.
Having put Mourinho and inexperience in the same sentence - quote: "maybe his inexperience or ego just flirts too close to self-importance and danger" - says it all.
Your player ratings are a laugh.
Although I applaud your love for Chelsea, I'd recommend you leave the review job to people that have better judgment as far as football goes.

Nice one TG - hope to find some spare time to put my own ramblings down in the not too distant.

Been a really interesting season for us as a club and Mourinho as a manager; it's the first time he's not won a league title in his managerial career so the reaction next season will be interesting (and inexperience isn't that wide of the mark - compared to Ferguson and Wenger he's relatively junior in terms of his time in the game).

One big signing to come? Who knows...?

Have a lot of sympathy for DE here - think the idea that we 'lost' the title, when they played so well for so much of it is a little harsh. Would agree that injuries rocked us badly but again, as DE points out, we missed the chance to take advantage of United's own injury problems at the arse-end of the season and for that only have ourselves to blame (although sheer physical and mental exhaustion were really responsible).

United were worthy champions and did well to hang on for so long, especially given the fact our manager was having his future questioned on an almost daily basis.

JM is already rectifying the errors he (or the club) made in the transfer market last summer, while United are spending big and spending well; next season could be as electrifying as this one.

On an unrelated note for a moment, my view of UEFA's - "Chelsea are the enemy of football" - Mr Gaillard may be moderating.

"What other set of fans steal tickets from their own supporters and out of the hands of children."

Indeed. A refreshing change from the usual dewy-eyed sentiment.

Back to us, think we may be being a bit premature on Maka. Thought he had a stormer in the cup final. Plus Diarra unproven there, Essien better further forward, though Obi does look a class act.

And fair play, Donkey boy, United's goal difference doesn't lie, they had a top season (he says through gritted teeth).

Your critique of our creative shortcomings looks fair too - it has cost us twice against the scouse bleaters.

Worry for next season is relying on Robben's good health. Would love to see Tevez in blue next year, though we'll be the team to beat, with or without him.

I apologise profusely for lacking the correct terminology. Grey and orange doesn't do it justice.

As for last night, I cant see why the nation is suddenly swept away by a 3 - 0 in Estonia. I'm ignoring anything that mentions Frank being either a) fat (come on, the guys a pro-footballer) or b) the single-handed reason we're doing so dismally in this campaign .

That's right, it's all Franks fault. He wasn't the one who single handedly drove us to qualification for the World Cup was he. He was ??? Best we ignore that, else we have no scapegoat.

A decent performance yes, but one that only goes to prove what an utter clown McClaren was for dropping Becks completely post-World Cup. He could have stayed in the squad, and been back up to Lennon.

Being as pessimistic as I am, I still dont believe we'll qualify. Croatia, Russia and Israel will all, to coin a Jose phrase, 'Park the bus' at Wembley, and we're simply not dynamic enough to break them down.

We need to get the settled back four fit and playing together (but definitely Bridge ahead of Ashley), and the midfield clicking like they did at times last night. The major problem is there are no decent English strikers. Rooney's discipline isn't good enough - he'll always be suspended for one in four games; Owen has had it; Crouch is nothing better than a decent plan B and Defoe is no better up front than anyone who posts on this blog.

And lets not delve into the depths of the squad players.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what Stewart Downing has done to warrant a call-up every time ?? He came on last night, seemed to play behind Bridge, then proceeded to play every pass backwards, save for the two long balls that went out for goal-kicks.

Frank played pretty well last night, something which has at least been credited by most media outlets. Was involved in the second and third goals (great crossfield pass for Owen's effort) and he seemed to tackle far more (necessary when Beckham started to get central midfield delusions again.

Bridge probably the pick though - thought he had an excellent game. Joe's goal wasn't bad either (didn't seem to do much else though).

An example of just how desperate the press is in this country.

The BBC's report linked below contains quotes made by Peter Kenyon 12 months ago when Chelsea accused Real of tapping up Robben.

Journalists at The Mirror (or some agency) have obviously read this and are now reporting it as "ROBBEN TAP-UP ROW".

This will spread, and every two-bit publication and (sp)blog will carry the story containing quotes that were made a year ago.

Is it any wonder we don't believe a word that's written about transfers these days?

For what it's worth, if this year's rumours of ongoing discussions with Real are true, I won't miss Robben if he does decide to leave.

Edit: Sky Sports, Fox Sports and Sporting Life have jumped on the bandwagon.

The original story from July 2006: Chelsea report Real on Robben bid.

Tevez has just as much pace and technique but is so much stronger on his feet.
Don't have anything against Robben, just that he is not cut for the Premiership. Anyone could see in the FA final against ManU. He was doing great till Brown decided enough was enough, got one good tackle in (wasn't even a fault, just an extra hard tackle) and Robben was done! He doesn't lack tallent - ha lacks toughness.

Browns tackle was as disgraceful as it was premeditated. This guy is dangerous and the sooner he starts getting some straight red cards the better for everyone - his tackle on Sinclair in the game at the SB was unnecessary and dangerous.

Brown no doubt paints himself in the "uncomppromising center half" bracket occupied by Ron Harris. It was barely acceptable in Rons days but the game has moved on and it has to be stamped out of the modern game.

I wonder what the result might have been if Michael essien had made that challenge (if Poll was refereeing it would have definately been a straight red)

Hi Everybody,

Just thought i'd pop my head round the door for a quick hello. HELLO!

CFC-n-me is right,
we've got a cracking squad and with a few adjustments plus another winger and raining in our loanee's we don't need to pay for much.

Next season lets see if we hear about the infamous £500mil we've supposed to have spent. On this can anyone provide a break don of this supposed amount, or where this information can be compared against other premiership clubs.

Watch Shever's and Ballack tear it up next season.

i Don't blame Drogba for questioning our lack of attacking drive when we play. 'More daring and wild' maybe not the correct words but he knows and the rest of the boys know that's the difference between us and the best teams.
We're too damn rigid -- until we go a goal down or find ourselves chasing games...

Hoping pizarro will be a hit -- only saw a bit of him against Arsenal in the CL and he looked the part then.
Maybe a right back is needed and another striker, but other than that we're good.
The truth is we could bring Kaka in and Cristiano Ronaldo but we'll still play the same style of football which inhibits our attacking players and shows our defensive players in a more positive light than them

Another year, another truck-load of scepticism in the Fifty house: LINK

The new fixtures aren't random. They can't be.

Newcastle away to Bolton on the first day - Big Sam and all that.

We are scheduled to play ManUSA at home on 26th April - more than a little forward planning by the FA and Sky hoping the title is not won by then.

Why do we seem to always play Newcastle in the last or penultimate game ?? (In fairness, this may only apply to the last couple of seasons, but I'm clutching at conspiracy-shaped straws).

On the plus side, barring re-arranged matches we get away trips to Liverpool, ManUSA and Arsenal out of the way before Xmas, which can only be good.

Any thoughts ???

Hi all, looks like we have Liverpool on the 18th August, Man -u 22nd Sept and Arsenal 15th Dec all away first so very good news., However, the title was not lost against any one of these teams, even with the loss at Liverpool.! It was at other team including draws at home, which means I hope that the boys dont take the other teams for granted again as they did Middlesborough the 2nd match of the season!!

It's not bad, not sure about the black bits at rib level. The shirt reminds me more of Borussia Dortmunds kit when they won the Champs League than Barca's day-glo effort

I dont mind it, but they've release 'Away change shorts' (and socks) to coin in a bit more cash. The thought of us turning out in a complete head-to-toe fluorescent yellow jump-suit is not one I'm looking forward to.

Hey all,
what do you think about Ben Haim close signing?

I think the guy is average and I still believe Mica Richards is better, but anyway, it seems the deal is almost done with Sam expressing his regrets he couldn't get Ben.

The problem is: I don't think he could be a cover for JT or Riccy in case (God forbid!) one of them got injured.

P.S. Thank you Tony for the great review, didn't have a chance to read it completely till now (due to exams).

I'm looking forward to seeing Ben Haim in action when the pre-season starts, having not really paid attention to him at Bolton.

We now have four centre defenders. Does this mean Boulahrouz is leaving or staying as an absolute back-up? And if he is, will Alex replace him?

This season promises to be intriguing yet again.

P.S. Tony, you may think that now, but wait until you see all the forty-somethings using it to cover up their middle age spread: it won't be so sexy then!

I'm not sure about Ben Haim, I'd rather have confirmation Alex is signing.

I dont know why, he always looks like a liability. A bit like Boulahrouz - I'm sure I read somewhere he's already signed for someone else ???

If Alex signs as well, we've got 4 CB's which is how it shold be. I reckon a decent RB (someone on a free in keeping with our current policy) and a further striker (sod the 'free' policy, let's break the bank on Torres or Villa)

Alex looks a cert and Ben Haim is better than having no fourth CB like last season or Huth like the season before. As a no.4 i'd put him above rivals: Wes Brown, Senderos and whoever Liverpool have (Warnock?). Liverpool - that's one team due an injury crisis this season.

Not sure how essential RB is now that Ferreira looks back to his old self (great end of season).

A fourth striker is the key and, yep, it'd be nice to get a good one.

I suppose my pessimism comes from us being such a great team, and my concern is we're signing players from 'lesser' teams (I don't mean it in a derogatory sense).

Mind you, the last bloke we signed from Bolton didn't do too bad........I pray he doesn't go to ManUSA as is reported again this morning.

Definitely need at least one more striker, and a top-drawer one at that. Torres or Villa would be my choice, but Huntelaar has had another good season.

And AC Milan are '80% confident' Sheva will be back there next season..........so maybe 2 strikers are required.

Eidur in a Man U shirt would be quite sickening... not sure why he'd go there though - having been a bit part (albeit a very important one) here and also at Barca, you'd assume that regular first team football would be the key at this stage in his career which he may not get up there.

All the striker names floating around are interesting, but can't see a big name coming unless Sheva heads back to Milan. Think things might start to move a little when La Liga finishes this weekend.

While with Pizarro I think he’s a decent buy, because I think we need another drogba type who can use his strength and from what I’ve seen he’s a goal poacher just what we need someone who can get there faster then shevchenko did last season, but if he stays hopefully he shows what he’s really about.

Better to get a Benhaim for nothing thabn a gamble which is unlikely to pay off until at leasty a coupla years like Boulahrouz.
And we're being a bit hast with the cannibal too, IMO. After all, he played at right back more than he did centre half for us, and even then it weren't many games.
Sure he looks poor, but look at how Carvalho improved... give him a year, maybe loan him out to another prem club and we'll have yet another quality defender on our hands

I really trust Mourinho's judgment but I still wonder why Chelsea isn't buying young creative midfielders. It would be interesting to clarify who in Chelsea really decides on buys.
Sometimes, in difficult games, creative midfielders are the only ones who can get enough fantasy to do miracles. Ballack and Lampard are two wonderful players, but by now are they inventing new things?
So, I must say I'm really sorry Chelsea didn't get Anderson, the Brazilian kid from Porto that got into Manchester United. As I followed the Portuguese League, I could watch his football carefully. He's already a fantastic player, the best here last year by large, one of those who makes things in the field you never saw before, especially advancing quickly with the ball forward and making space between oponents. If he gets sufficient backup in his team he can't get first team football immediately. Unfortunately, this is another wonderful creative player Chelsea will surely miss. Nani doesn't even compare with him.

Cashif - Carvalho was already one of the best central defenders when he got to Chelsea... one of those that already had the Champions League.

I'm not saying I totally agree with R.A. but the academy IS giving some talents that will be, with great care from such a great club, decent players. And actually, the squad now is more than capable in competing and getting the league back.

What I'm saying is: this squad is strong and stable for the next couple of years and by that time the talents coming from the academy will reinforce the squad.

Fifty,
My friend Torres is possibly the most over rated player in the world and that is being nice to the boy. Like pretty much all spanish strikers that have been he blows hot and cold, the only thing is this boy blows luke warm and then goes to absolute freezing cold.
He's quick, he's good with a ball and he's a little clever in his movement. Though they may be good qualities of a striker. He's weak, not good in the air, and loses interest very quickly. He will not like getting kicked around by English center halfes so in that case, good luck Liverpool, go and buy him and watch Crouch still get picked ahead of him after a few months!

If anyone is interested in young talent to watch out for keep an eye on Pazzini of Fiorentina, a fabulous striker who would adapt to the premiership as well as Zola though a completely different kind of attacker. Another Italian hotshot Fabio Quagliarella, unfortunately is excited by news Man.utd are interested but another quick and lethal striker.
Drenthe of the Netherlands appears to be the next Dutch sensation and Chelsea are sniffing at around 4million for the twenty year old. Ryan Babbel seems to be heading in the right direction football wise but again heading to Arsenal if reports are true.
On a personal note i feel United have bought a flop in Nani who does nothing for me seen him play quite a few times for Sporting and another Portuguese player that Portugal are getting ahead of themselves with such as flops like Nuno Gomes, Hugo Viana and Helder Postiga.
Don't worry about who's signing who lads, Jose knows where he's lacking strength and the special one always gets it right.

So we've loaned Ben Sahar to Charlton until January.

What do you guys reckon - a proper chance for a fully fit Scott Sinclair to impress, or an indication that another striker is to be signed ???

I'd like to bring in another striker, especially with the African Nations Cup on the horizon, but wonder if Jose will just revert to Sheva and Pizzaro as the front two (if we play two up front, that is) in January when Drogs is away.

Not sure about Malouda, not someone I'd ever considered we'd sign, but quality nonetheless. As for Quaresma and his reported 'histrionics', he'll fit in nicely with the hundreds of others that do it already.

With the potential departure of Geremi to the Toon, I reckon a new RB is priority (Lahm or Miguel preferrably) along with a striker.

And onto Lamps. I know it's all press speculation, but if he has turned down our contract offer, is anyone bothered if he sees out two more seasons then leaves ??? He'll be 31 then, the dynamic creative midfielder role is hardly one for the ageing player - maybe one of the youngsters needs to be blooded.

As for Lamps holding out for 120G's a week.......We're the fools who starting paying Shever's and Ballack that type-a-money. He is a real Chelsea player/croud pleaser, but we can use Mikel or Essien in this role and they don't seem the type to 'hussle' the club!!!

Is it just me or have we lost the plot a bit here? I know the others are desperate to catch us, but why the hell are we letting them? Just one big buy is all I'm after. Alves maybe, or Tevez, or Villa....is it that much to ask?

I'm slowly turning into a pessimistic, grumpy Chelsea fan before the season has started !!!

ManUSA are now about the announce the signing of Tevez, Liverpool are about to add Quaresma to the Torres signing. I feel we're getting left behind. We've made some solid signings, but will any of them make us that much better so we can match ManUSA next season ???

It's because I'm used to us being spoilt; it's normally us spending all the money, yet this season we've looked on as ManUSA have clearly strengthened a Championship winning team. Yeah, they'll lose one or two squad players, but the signings they've made only enhance their team - something I'd like to say we had done, but I'm not sure we have.

You cant compensate for the injuries we got, and I sincerely hope (in the nicest possible way) that ManUSA get them this season.

I've mentioned in previous posts I'd personally have liked Torres at the Bridge. I really hope he has a first season like Sheva did last year. But I dont think he will. And I believe Sheva will have another season like last year. I think his time's been and gone.

The potential signing of Malouda signals to me Robben may be off (no great loss in my eyes), but that would simply be viewed as a replacement signing. We need to be doing our best to buy players that improve on what we've got. Torres would have done that, Tevez would, Nani would. Unfortunately, Sidwell and Ben Haim wont.

Roman is quite rightly reluctant to hand over vast wads of cash to fund the purchase of more bumbling has-beens. Problem is, that's what is needed to close the gap created this pre-seson, else we'll be challenging Liverpool for second, not ManUSA for first.

Don't panic chaps, we don't necessarily need big buys.

Last season was the one season I was confident of winning the league with Sheva and Ballack joining, which I thought could only strengthen us. (On an associated point, their £120 k per week wages upset JT & Lamps, who 'only' get £90k per week.)

Who did Man U sign last summer, before going on to win the league? I can't recall anyone, plus they'd lost Keane & Van Nistelroy from the season before.

Don't forget 3 years ago we were buying Carvalho, Ferreira, Tiago, Jarosik etc - big money signings, but not 'stars' - and look what they helped us achieve.

I've got my reservations about Chimbonda (mainly related to glove-wearing in inappropriate weather conditions) but we do need a decent RB. Geremi & Boularouz at RB for a lot of last season tells it's own story.

Let's go back to turning those draws into 3-pointers again next season, and also win the Champions League in Moscow!

I am surprised that people are saying the Robben would not be a loss for us? He is quite simply brillant for us!! Yes he is injury prone - but when he plays he makes a big difference. I do not understand why we are buying Malouda - a left sided wing forward when we have Robben, J.Cole and SWP? It must mean that one will leave and to be honest I like them all. SWP really hit some form to the end of the season and I would love to still see him with us.

I think our free signings have been excellent so far this season. Sidwell will be great back-up and cover to the team during the AFC and Ben Haim will be a great back-up to Terry and Riccy. Pizarro is also a great player and I think we will see him overtake Sheva as 1st choice next season.

I would like to see Glenn Johnson come back into the squad next season - I think him and Paulo will make a great duo at RB.

We do not need anymore stars at the Bridge - let the Yankee's of Scouse and ManUre spend away - then when Jose's team win the EPL and CL we will laugh in their faces. £27 mill for Torres!! hahaha - he is no Drogba and he was only £24mill.

And if those Yanks win anything - we will just chant "you bought the title"

Up yours Red bastards - Blue is best.

A good Kingmaker advises the King as to the best course not bows down to his every word while the country plunges into civil war! As for Avram Grant, I am now going to start a campaign against this guy whio is a nobody and will ruin us!. I can see Jose getting fed up soon and deciding enough is enough. MONEY DOES NOT BUY YOU TITLES!!!!! Real have shown that as Chelsea last year and Barca too when they won nothing!!!! IS anybody out there in agreement or does everybody think it is all roses?

Really don't think we need any big signings so long as we get a good season from Shev. Otherwise, we might struggle for goals again. But we don't need anybody in central midfield, our attacking midfield is strong with Robben, Cole, Malouda and Sinclair and our back four and GK are among the best in the business (with strong back up this season). United's policy is interesting, but they've got to replace Scholes and Giggs long term, which is no easy feat, hence the number of signings. I still think they're lacking a proper striker, but they'll batter all the weak sides with a Rooney-Ronaldo-Tevez forward line and probably play for the draw against us as they usually do.

It's going to be fascinating.

Aahhhhh, poor Billy Gallas.

Couldn't get out quick enough, but one trophyless season in, and he's rumbling on about 'being here today, but who knows tomorrow'.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

I just read that Fifty, and was about to add the link here, but you beat me to it :)

But I echo your sentiments exactly. I just wonder if the Arsenal fans think they got the better deal now?

The Telegraph reports today that along with the first team squad, Scott Sinclair, Jack Woods and Sam Hutchinson are off to the States.

With Sahar at Charlton, and Jose traditionally wanting all his purchasing done as early as possible, I reckon Scott may get some serious playing time this season (providing he's over his injury).

With Malouda confirmed, I reckon we're done with new signings now.

TRUBLUE couldn't be more rtrue that about Robben. The most dangerous player we have when he's playing. Just heard Real Madrid are signing Drenthe... the kid would have been a good signing for us. Was really impressed wit hhim at the u21 championships.
Ah well.. we've got the overrated Malouda so there was no real chance we'd be trying to outbid Madrid for Drenthe....

Here we go again,"Chelsea Football Club and Sevilla have reached agreement for the one year loan of Khalid Boulahrouz"
Hope we aren't paying towards his stay in Spain.
Perhaps it's connected to a possible deal for Alves.

If it has nothing to do with Alves coming here, someone needs to explain why we continue to lend players rather than sell them.Does anyone think that Boulahrouz will ever play for us again?
I hate to criticise any Chelsea player but the best possible result was for him to leave the club on a permanent transfer, not on yet another loan deal.

Lynn,

Your second post echos my thoughts. It seems we go out of our way to buy certain players for whatever reason (Crespo, Veron, Boulahrouz), they aren't a success for us and because of that no other clubs are daft enough to pay what we're asking so we loan them out, paying half their wages no doubt, until the end of their contract.

Doesn't seem like good business decisions are being made. Probably all because of Kenyon.

Will Avram's arrival give Jose the blues?

I have to say that regarding the arrival of Avram, I question myself about the true intentions of the club’s hierarchy. If they want a season focused on football and winning more trophies, it looks like the arrival of Avram will bring none of this. His arrival looks more like designed to undermine the influence of Mourinho on the Team. If so, it shows that Roman is more committed to pursue is dispute with mourinho than pursuing the new trophies.

Morning all - long time no speak and all that.

Really not sure about Alves. Big money for a full back whose defending has left a fair bit to be desired on the (admittedly few) occasions that I've seen him. Very good going forward, but given that Jose starts having kittens when his FB's get anywhere near the halfway line, I'm surprised we're in for him.

On Boulahrouz's overall form last season, I wouldn't be too surprised if we had to pay someone to take him.

Interesting to see al the money being flung about - new TV cash clearly burning a hole in the collective football pocket. Aside of the Bent / Torres type signings, some of the prices for players who most would generally agree aren't exactly world beaters are simply ludicrous - 5m for Chopra, 6m for Kamara, 5m for Koumas - the list goes on.

We're all dooooooomed, I tells you :-)

Fifty,
Somehow i don't think it's unfair to chuck Crespo into the pot of flops that we have bought! He saved our skin on a fair few occasions if i can remember correctly. His only problem was our country. In that case can't blame him. I personally would have loved for him to stay. Veron, Boula, yeah flops Mutu as well maybe. Our business doesn't seem the best when letting players go like Duffers for £5m. I just wanted to correct you on the Crespo part as his goal ratio in the time he was here i think was as good as any one in the prem for the amount of games he played. 49 apps 20 goals i think? Not bad as those 49 apps were quite often sub appearances.

Guido,

Fair enough, but do you mean you do thinks it's unfair I included him ???

I was probably a little harsh, it just seems to me that once someone is unwanted, we're happy to be lumbered with their wages etc even when they dont play for us.

All we hear about is how we're determined to be in the black financially in a few years, you'd think we would do all we could to get our money's worth out of our players, not discard them at the earliest opportunity. He'd have been an ideal player to have involved last season, turning one or two of those disappointing draws into victories. Unfortunately, despite the £30m, I reckon there's a pretty good chance Sheva will find himself on loan in Italy before the end of his Chelsea contract.

These are the comments from the Sevilla president
"Boulahrouz wanted to move up in his career and he left the second best club in the world to join the first," the club supremo said.

Yet again we end up looking like a soft touch, why do we keep leaving ourselves open to ridicule from lesser clubs than ourselves.Haven't we learned any lessons regarding previous loan deals?

I can tell you one thing and I really do want to be a gloom merchant on this one. However, there will be nothing good about Avram Grant arrival to Chelsea. I know this guy and I know this type. Nothing else but intrigue and power fights.

Malouda is not overrated , i doubt anybody that says that ever watched him play. His balance is his best attribute , he has solid techiqe and shot. Lyons best player since Essien left , i think. Scored 10 last season.
Nobody can say now if he will be good in chelsea but considering the type of player that he is i think he would fit into any team , and also its a plus that he played with Drogba in guingamp and with Essien in Lyon , they know each others type of play.
The only negative thing i could say about him is that he tends to hesitate at times about going forward and challenging , not in Lyon but more in the french national team.
Cheers
