The traditional curtain-raiser to the new Premiership campaign will be the eleventh meeting between Chelsea and Liverpool since the start of the 2004/05 season. Of the previous ten fixtures three have finished 0-0 (all in the Champions League), while Chelsea have won five (including all four Premiership games) and Liverpool two; combined scoreline: 12-6.
A telling statistic is Liverpool's record against Chelsea in Cup competitions during that time. Nobody can forget the Reds' 1-0 Champions League semi-final second leg win on their way to lifting the trophy in 2005, or last season's 2-1 win in the FA Cup semi-final. Chelsea's only Cup victory in the same period was a 3-2 win in extra-time of the 2004/05 League Cup final, Jose Mourinho's first trophy as Chelsea manager.
Not that previous results will have much bearing on tomorrow's meeting. Chelsea have played just three pre-season games, all in the last seven days, and Mourinho has made it clear the Community Shield is more of a preparation match than a year ago against Arsenal - although he says it will be taken seriously.
"We have to try to win. I am not going to play against Liverpool in the Community Shield like I played against Feyenoord or Celtic, changing five or six players at half-time, leaving Ballack or Shevchenko on the bench, or leaving John Terry on the bench like in Holland," Mourinho said during the pre-match press conference on Friday.
"I will try to play the best team. What people have to understand is a lot of our players are not ready to play for 90 minutes. I will face the game in a way that I will try to win but I have a season with major competitions and I am preparing a team for that."
With Joe Cole, Petr Cech and Robert Huth recovering from injuries, and Claude Makelele and William Gallas lacking match fitness because of their late return to training, Mourinho will have the same squad available to him as against Celtic in midweek - only this time he will field a stronger starting eleven, including Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack.
Liverpool's pre-season hasn't gone exactly to plan. Thrashed 5-0 by unheralded Bundesliga side FSV Mainz in Germany last weekend (all five goals scored in the second half), they then struggled to beat Maccabi Haifa in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier on Wednesday, relying on a last-minute winner from new signing Mark Gonzalez after going a goal down.
Rafael Benitez has spent £20m over the summer in an effort to strengthen his squad, spending £13m of that on two of the Premiership's 'bad boys' - Craig Bellamy from Blackburn Rovers and Jermaine Pennant from relegated Birmingham City. Both have had disciplinary problems in the past and it will be interesting to see if Benitez can keep them in check. Pennant in particular has the potential to become a very good player.
As for the result, both managers will be looking to get in the first meaningful blow before the Premiership kicks off next weekend. Liverpool are the better prepared in terms of match practise (they have been training for more than a month), but Chelsea have the quality to trouble the world's best teams even with players that are yet to reach full match fitness. Hopefully Benitez's negative tactics won't kill the game as a spectacle.
There's no such thing as a meaningless or 'friendly' game between Chelsea and Liverpool these days, and there's definitely bad blood between the two sets of fans (not to mention the managers) - both would love first bragging rights.
Let us hope it's a Blue day.
Want to get in the mood early? Watch a short highlights video of Chelsea's 4-2 win over Liverpool in the Fourth Round of 1997's FA Cup. We were 2-0 down at half-time. It's still one of my all-time favourite games.
Oh well. This ain't the worst thing to loose. But, I am a bit concerned that the team hasn't yet jelled together as they should have. Apparently, Liverpool was the better prepared. Everyone has a record of 0-0-0 this weekend in the prem. A solid week of practice and attitude ajustment and Chelsea should beat Man City.
Some feelings after the game. Kalou did impress me and played quite well, Shevchenko has showed why we payed for him so much. Terry too many mistakes, Lampard except of pass to Sheva has been almost anonymous. I just hope it is not repetition of the last season. New guys Diara and Mikel may be did not have a time to show something. Mikel definitely looked kind of scared even.
Just hope as Johnarejr said they will cllick and start to play. It is only week till the big start.
I suppose this result was half expected, but I'm not too dissapointed. Liverpool did look a yard or so sharper to the ball than the boys.
There were some quick, clean passing movements which looked promising, and will only improve as the season develops.
I'm basing my observations from 5000 miles away in Florida (12$ for the sports package for the month, oh boy are we being ripped off for Sky Sports)
Kalou looks promising, enthusiastic and quick and can only improve, Shevchenko great first touch and sublime finish, that's what we payed for, worth every penny!
Defensively I think Gallas is needed back, and Cole bought from Airline FC! I also thought that Geremi had the new Liverpol wonderkid Gonzales in his back pocket. Cudicini was at fault for the first goal and should have saved it, but after 4 games it looks fairly promising.
So all in all not too bad but room for improvement.
I'll continue to soak up the sun and the next 2 games on (TV Man City & Blackburn) looking forward to the upcomping rose tinted report, don't let me down!!
Not the best game played by us but fair as fair can be we deserved to lose...
I am sorry to say this but I was hoping that Lamps could be rested...He is killing us. take away the pass to Shevy (Master Class...I must add) He was NOT in the game.
Wayne Bridge, Cudicini combination can never win you cups...Cech needs to come back soon and so should ASHES from Airline FC.
Geremi for me was fitter than Fereira...Do NOT know why the Chief let him go....
Ballack was being hammered away and did not get to see his true game.
SWP was crying to play...What Number was he PLAYING? Shocker really.
Drogs was busy and should have been given more time.
As for Robben...He has to learn to things when to cross and the give and go routine...it is better suited to players that have mastered on how to close him down.
Kalou is a gem...fearless and mighty quick...LOVED that thing on Riise...Collectors Item
On the Whole...Bravo Loserpool but we will be BACK!
It was a sad moment after the game. I dont know why morinho keeps making mistakes when it comes to subtituting players. Geremi was better than Ferriera at the RB and while Cudicini is still get his form back . At the same time we should find a replacement for Wayne Brigde as quick as possible, he cant even use his right leg or make a good cross upfront. We need to look elsewhere for a left back if Ashely Cole is over priced. Lampard did quite well at the midfield but the whole team fitness level is too low for them to jell together as a strog team we use to be. Drogba should stay on the field till the end of the match because he has the character and also giving alot of assist to Shevy. As for SWP, is still learning and i believe he will improve with time and more chance given to him this season . Solomon Kalou, Mikel Obi and Diarra they are promising young star which should be looking up to for the future of CFC. It is true we need some matches to get our full fitness and most importantly the first game of the season against MAN CITY need to be won at all cost, so to boost their morale for the second match . But we might have problems with the away matches this season . We should all have it in mind that it will gets near the christmas before we get back on full fitness. Makalele, Gallas and another good attacking left back need to be back in the team and Ballack should be given some long rest . And pray that Joe Cole should come back quickly . we all missing him so much . Robben needs advise on when to pass or dribble with the ball. Lets wait and see what happens with the coming season . Liverpool deserved to win and thats an edge over us. I rest my case.
The prospect for this season beginning is not so bright. the game against feyernoord gave me some hope with the inter-passing and control needed for a team. the game against liverpool showed no class (apart from sheva's goal), no energy and fitness was really low.
Cudicini is appalling in goal now (i feel bitter about this strongly), bridge is a write off (no confidence, no imagination and out of place) , robben and kalou are just too overconfident and needs to play for the team rather than for themselves, ballack .....i doubt if he can fit into this team (i really hold my doubts), Lampard was good but one tree cannot make a forest. tactically, our positional plays was an off-set yesterday and utter naivety in the first goal right from terry to cudicini. our bench for once, looks to be very weak.
but all said and criticised, i believe in the special one, we may have to scrap for results but thats the price we pay for having big stars from the world cup. with Sheva, guys i have no concerns. Lampard with overhead pass, mikel with low through pass, drogba with flick ons.....we shall deliver again. i have no doubt. this is just a wake up call and guess the morning bells today, is heeded.
We'll be fine. Might take us a little longer than usual to get started, but we'll be knocking teams over for fun by September. Scousers are very good, but haven't come close to launching a title challenge for years so might struggle in the run in, and i'm not sure they've got what it takes to win the big games v us, Mancs and Arsenal. It's going to be interesting!
I guess I wanted us to lose this match.
When you get things going to easy you fail to see the bigger picture.
The hunger and desire was not there in our game. The hunger lamps showed two seasons ago has gone on a holiday...The marking is horrible to say it mildly...True it was not our first eleven out there but please...after 50 minutes or so...I failed to understand the format of play. I do remember us playing dangerous balls in our own half...what was all this about???
The special one I think decided to let the small fish go so we could get the mighty big one.
My fear is for Lamps...With such displays..England could be a bye bye
Am tormented when we lose games like this...The only explanation is that the other team was better than us... I CAN NOT STAND THAT CONCEPT... We have been down this road before and ths is our era...The other team should be saying that CHELSEA was better than they.
Okay Granted we had players at the World Cup and Loserpool did not but CHELSEA...Take it or live it.
I have to hand it to Benitox for the way he has bought this time around...For me Bellamy is their match winner...Forget about sisoko...This buy is all brilliant.
Going down to the store to get me a SHIRT 7 because I know these are bound to run out...We have a legend at the Bridge....shevy
I have to say i think a lot of the negativity here is over the top.
I missioned to Cardiff to watch the game so clearly was gutted at the result. Although to be honest was more upset at the appalling turnout from the Chelsea fans. I understand it is expensive and a schlep from London but nevertheless was dreadful to be out-sung and mocked by the Mickey Mousers again. I suppose a lot of them don't have to worry about work the next morning...
The game was a bit of a joke really. We did not look sharp at all and they dominated midfield. Ballack took two very heavy challenges early on from Zenden and Sissoko and dare I say it didn't look massively up for it.
The real shock was that defensively we were a shambles. Maybe that was due to lack of Maka (although Essien was superb in that position), fitness and full-backs all three of whom i thought had a bit of a 'mare.
This was a run out only and I suspect it will be completely different come two or three weeks into the season. Sheva looked superb. Wonderful technical ability and an all round centre forward who will be deadly.
Again i thought Drogba was pretty terrible. Unlike some others who have posted here I thought Lamps was mediocre at best. No drive and rubbish set piece delivery. He needs to sharpen up otherwise he might not find himself in the team, especially with Essien looking undroppable in pre-season.
All in all it was a poor spectacle but we can only get (considerably) better. At the moment I see no reason to be particularly concerned at all.
I too travelled down to Cardiff and was upset with the way we played. We have looked very suspect at the back all pre-season, but going forward have looked very sharp though our final ball has been lacking. The first goal we conceded was quite frankly appalling.
Shevchenko and Essien were fantastic as was Carvalho and Cudicini certainly redeemed himself at the end. What worries me was our lack of ideas when we went two one down. Sticking Terry up front at the end is just not good enough for a team of our class. It just stinks of desperation.
We are rubbish at playing long ball anyway, and I feel we need another striker. I think that we should try and get Trezeguet on loan or something which just need someone who can come off the bench and add something different.
I worry too about Lampard. I hate believing what the press say about us at the moment, they seem to lie and generally show animosity to us when there is no need, but perhaps they could be right on this one. Can Lampard and Ballack work together?
To be honest, although I obviously have not seen him in the Premiership yet, I think Ballack is a better player, and therefore with Makelele being undroppable at this moment in time and Essien's current form, Lampard does not have to play. The fire which has driven Lampard, an able player but someone who is without the natural talent of Gerrard, seems to have disapeared along with his confidence.
In any other season without him we would be nothing, but with Ballack he really has to up his game otherwise, he will and should not make the team. I have defended him like mad over the summer, I feel Gerrard should play on the right for England and Hargreaves and Lumpy in the middle but after his quite frankly dire displays so far I don't know how much I can carry on for.

I missed this day. The day when I wear new kit shirt, go to the pub, indulge my self with lot of pints and shout like a mad: "COME ON BLUES!!!!!!!!" And there is no better ocasion than today when we meet LOOSERPOOL!!!!!
And here we are after frustrated and disorganized game. very strange game extremely strange.
