I love conjectures when it comes to the football business and I’m now going to indulge myself in this one. As remote as this may seem now, I am increasingly thinking we are going to witness the shock return of The Special One to Stamford Bridge. Obviously, all the papers and pundits are solidly claiming he’s going to Inter Milan and the sacking of Roberto Mancini would seem to more or less confirm this view. Indeed, amongst all the names being peddled for the Chelsea job, Jose Mourinho’s is conspicuously missing. But, as I’ve implied above, I’m reading the situation differently.
From all I can see in the press, there’s no new information on the Inter move, but with the sacking of Henk Ten Cate and the continued retention of Steve Clarke, I think the deck is being cleared for Mourinho’s return. To me, the sacking of Ten Cate indicates that Frank Rijkaard won’t be coming. As much as Roman Abramovich is reputed to be yearning for free-flowing attacking football, Rijkaard’s magic has waned in the past couple of years and his reputation for not being able to rein in big egos would not appeal to the Chelsea hierarchy that needs a strong character for the dressing room. Besides, Roman is too proud to want to jump at the opportunity of employing a Barcelona reject. Indeed, I have a feeling that no sacked manager or anyone whose position is presently threatened will get the Chelsea job; so those who think Mancini or Sven-Goran Eriksson are in the frame should think something else. In Mancini’s case, the fact that he made no headway in Europe in his time with Inter further rules him out. Chelsea are not only looking for a coach with proven European success, but I think they’re also looking for one with a record of winning the Premier League. Chelsea are not looking to Mark Hughes or Roy Keane. The reported interest in these people is manufactured by the British press. Didier Deschamps wants a job badly and he’s an old boy; so he’s let it be known he’s available. But he was overlooked for Mourinho four years ago and I can’t see Chelsea going back to him. Guus Hiddink is too old by Chelsea’s standard and big Phil Scolari is too eccentric and untested in club football in Europe. What all this means is that the job is only for one man. That man is Jose Mourinho. Reports have claimed he’s got back on good terms with Roman and the Chelsea hierarchy and he himself has confirmed it in a series of interviews. There are even reports that Roman gave him a gift of a special Ferrari model recently and so on and so forth. When all is said and done, there is nobody on the list of possible appointees with a better record than Mourinho. There’s none with his charisma and there’s none with the ability to energize the supporters worldwide than him. There’s none that can sell the Chelsea brand better worldwide and yes, he stands head and shoulders above everyone purportedly in the frame. So, what is the problem?
I think what is happening is that Mourinho has probably reached some kind of pre-contract arrangement or understanding with some other club (possibly Inter) before the present development at Chelsea and would rather Chelsea sort it out with the club before he can return. He could also be playing mind games with the Chelsea hierarchy, considering the nightmare they put him through in his last year and half at the club in terms of hamstringing him. Mourinho wants full control of football affairs and is possibly driving a hard bargain behind the scenes while letting the impression be created that he isn’t going to wait for Chelsea as he has another job lined up. I think the battle now is between Inter and Chelsea for Mourinho’s signature. I won’t be surprised if there are talks now behind the scenes between Inter, Chelsea and Mourinho to get the latter back at the Bridge. Inter sacking Mancini could just be a gimmick to up the ante with Chelsea, while Chelsea sacking Ten Cate and leaving Clarke could be a message to Mourinho that the people brought in as part of the now failed reorganization at Chelsea have been cleared. Mourinho and Ten Cate obviously have a history from the Frisk-induced Battle of Nou Camp and the Chelsea hierarchy are clearly aware that he’d be the last man Mourinho would want to work with. So, my little theory is that the card shuffling going on in the European managerial circles may shockingly return Mourinho to the club that has given him the biggest profile of his career and to fans with whom he still has a love affair. I will therefore hang on to the faintest hope that The Special One is returning until Chelsea actually appoint a new manager. Stranger things have happened in football.
Jose Mourinho has been appointed as manager of Inter Milan.
Mourinho has signed a three-year deal with the Italian side in his first job since he and Chelsea parted company by mutual consent in September 2007.
wow, this is one insightful article...but no one can be sure what may happen... Morinho is probably playing mind games with the Chelsea board right now, with the whole Inter affair, but it could be exactly what it looks like! Morinho's gonna end up in Inter, and Scolari or Mancini will get the Chelsea job...
BUT...
no one can tell...unless u can read Tsar Abramovic's mind ;)
May Chelsea aquire a worthy enough coach for the players and fans, not to mention its owner!
This is very surprising because I just made this analysis to a friend earlier before storming through this article. I think Mr. Kenn is absolutely right. The press told us that Jose sent a text message to Michael Essien stating he would be signing for Inter on Monday. But up till now we still haven't gotten a confirmation that he (Jose) has signed for Inter Milan. Moreover, Ten Cate was assured of his job when Avram Grant was sacked but surprisingly his job was terminated days after. I think Ten Cate was fired due to conditions given by Jose that he wouldn't want any interference as a head coach because that was where the problem all started when Avram Grant was brought in as the director of sports, a position that was later offered to Grant which he refused. I feel the return of the special one would boost the fans, the players as well as the management. Roman needs one thing "THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE" and has realized he wasn't patient enough for Jose to deliver. Other great managers such as Sir Alex Ferguson & Arsene Wenger have stayed seasons without trophies but it wasn't enough for them to be fired. All I can say now is that the table has turned and the people that instigated Roman to fire Jose have failed Roman. So it only boils down to one thing, if with all the speculation that Jose was already headed for Inter Milan and days after it was officially stated that Mancini was sacked there's still no confirmation, then it is clear that Chelsea & Inter are trying to reach an agreement on Jose. You don't have a deal if it's not certified. Jose loves Chelsea as much as the players. I wouldn't be surprised to see the return of the "special one". We all know Jose and his mind games, so I think something is going on that even the press don’t know about. So stay keep your fingers crossed for the “UNEXPECTED”.
Jose Mourinho will be back just like Tupac Shakur!!!

Johannesburg, South Africa
why dont we just do a poll within this site of the personality the chelsea fans would like to see as their next manager if its
TSO GUUS
RIJKAARD SPARKY
SCOLARI ANCELOTTI(matchfixer)
MANCINI HITZVELD
ERICKSON ZOLA
CLARKE LIPPI
after these do a poll of the player you would most likely want to see in chelsea() and those you would most likely want to leave chelsea....
GUYS the league in ENGLAND is controlled by the standard of REFEREEING for example if am given 9 PENALTIES IVE BEEN GIVEN 27 CLEAN Points.. if we can get 3REDS AGAINST the top 4 teams there is no way we can loose the league....in simple terms get a coach who can get these things done ....flamboyance is absolute rubbish if the ref is incharge
Lovely article KEN but i have to agree with the above comments. There's no way T.S.O will be returning to Stamford Bridge, no matter how much we all want it.. As SHAK says, it's looking to be between Scholari and Mancini at the moment.
Imagine if Mourinho did come back to us though?
Wow..it'd be like..the biggest come-back since Bobby Ewing!!!!
I'd love to believe it, but Inter won more than we did this season and sacked their manager - meaning they must have had a replacement lined up.
JM is probably getting on well with Roman now because after every tournament Average Grunt took us out of, Jose was texting him saying 'You know that wouldn't have happened with me there'. He probably got the Ferrari as a way for Roman to tell him to pee off and stop pointing out the obvious.
It's depressing to think Mancini and Ancelotti are the favourites for the job. Ancelotti because of all his match-fixing baggage, and Mancini mainly because Inter were the most boring team ever in their two-legs against Liverpool - hardly the step forward we require.
For all the names in the hat Riijkaard and Hughes are still the two I'd prefer. Whether Hank Top Cat being sacked is any indication about FR's chances of landing the job, I dont know. I hope not.
I fucking so hope so. Imagine the Mancs fear when such an announcement is made. It would be the coup de grace to their ideas of total dominance for the next few years. Only Chelsea could produce such a startling shock. I'm looking for all sorts of signs that would make this likely. I look at the lack of news about Drogba. I look at the total stasis in the transfer market around us. I'm thinking players are waiting before agitating this way or that. I'm also thinking, you know, back in September, Jose said he was going to go with a more open style. He showed it too in the early games with Birmingham, Reading and Portsmouth, where there was a tinkering with the system in practice that brought a few shocks but looked like a fresh development (away to Liverpool was, of course, business as usual...as you would expect). After the opening burst of adrenaline fueled combat, it went wrong because of a slump in competence in three crucial games. The players could not quite settle into the patterns required against Villa, Blackburn and Rosenberg, when the freshness had to give way to routine. This allowed an attack of nerves to flood into the gap between intention and realization. On the part of the owners and on Jose's part. They separated in mutual agreement. We will never know what would have happened with more time, more work on the system and the return to a full squad. I'm sure we would have achieved something amazing. So...have both sides realized the mistake in rushing to conclusions? Have they accepted compromises need to be made in terms of accommodating each other's desires. A more sober, diplomatic Jose (he's actually very good at it away from the frontline of battle - see his work for charity, the speech he made in Israel in support of the joint Jewish and Palestinian kids football initiative, it was statesmanlike), a more patient and practical Roman. And surely Jose has not enjoyed his absence from the game. The lack of interest from some huge clubs who are clearly nervous of his personal style and approach. Maybe he needs to come back to show that he is capable of winning with style aligned to pragmatism. Maybe he needs to build his name and reputation on the work he does with a single club - like Old Red Nose at the Mancs. Like I said, I fucking hope so.
Are you kidding? AS much as I would love to see this happen, I just can't see the AG BILLIONAIRE ego succumbing to this. Ferrari or no Ferrari. That's like saying: "Ok ok, I was wrong Jose. Please come back." In private is one thing, but so that whole wide world can see? No way, Jose...
Besides, have we forgotten the core of Mourinho's style? Defensive, methodical, boring, but winning. AG wants attractive, offensive football. What guarantees does AG have that Mourinho will compromise and change his style all of a sudden? He's not even proven to be able to teach that effectively.
I DO like your point about how having him back is absolutely the thing for the club, fans, player's egos-happiness, and foremost - rattling Man U's insides. And all of your points in the post are in line. But like I said, I just can't see AG admitting he might have been wrong sacking him in the first place.
It isn't going to happen and would probably be a disaster if it did, cos the weight of expectation would be too great for even JM to handle.
Kenn Emetulu - are you Mihir Bose in disguise floating another wild speculation?
BBC Sport 'Breaking Gossip' on the football section :
"Chelsea's out-of-favour Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro may return to Germany with former clubs Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich interested. But the Spanish pair of Valencia and Villarreal have also considered making a move. (Bild, 1500)"
Roman, Bruce, Peter, Eugene or whoever. For the love of God, if Valencia are (for some ludicrous reason) interested, broker a swap deal involving Pizarro and a huge wad of cash for David Villa. Now.
I was only away for a week, and now look! It promises to be an interesting summer...
It does seem hard to discern the logic behind what's going on. José can only have been ditched for one (or both) of two reasons: a desire for shexhy football (RA reads the press wetting themselves about Arsenal and wants them to love his team just as much), or a clash of personalities (José got too big for his boots). The appointment of AG suggests that the second reason was the more important one: take away the charismatic and demanding egotist, replace him with the quiet, not very exciting teacher's pet. But I suppose it's possible that the first reason was relevant too, and RA and the other suits really did delude themselves into thinking that AG would get the team playing champagne football.
But then why did AG get fired? It can't seriously be because of results. Are we going to fire every manager who can't do better than second in the league by 3 points and the final of the CL? It can't be because of a personality clash; he was still teacher's pet. It *could* be because he failed to deliver the shexhy football, but in that case the suits are exposed as a bunch of utter bumbling morons, since there was no reason at all to think that a manager as underqualified as AG could ever have transformed the team into Brazil 1970 in just a few months. No, he surely got fired for the reasons that 95% of us on this blog could see perfectly clearly right from the start: he didn't have the respect of the players, he couldn't get the team playing well, he wasn't a leader who could shape the team into a unit and get the players working together.
... in other words, he wasn't José.
Whichever way you argue it, the club's effectively admitting that they made a stupid mistake, either in firing José (because they now recognise the importance of a manager who's respected and loved by the players), or in hiring AG (because they want shexhy football and will keep firing managers until they get it).
You can see Kenn's point, then: really the only logical solution is to confess the idiocy of what happened last September and bring José back. But of course that won't happen unless both Mourinho and RA had no other options, and I'm sure José will be offered the Inter job.
So the club is well and truly backed into a corner. Whoever they choose will have to do what they think José couldn't (deliver shexhy football -- this whole argument is nonsense of course, ask any Arse or Barca fan how much they value their club style at the moment), and will also have to do what AG couldn't (manage the team, essentially). They've effectively raised ridiculous expectations.
I think the only way out is to go for someone more in the Sparky mould (younger, proven to be an inspiring manager but not yet tested at the top level), and to really, genuinely, give them control of the team and give them at least three years to prove what they can do. If they go for Ancelotti or Scolari or SGE or Lippi, it'll just look like a quick fix, they'll be judged against AG's achievements as well as José's, and expectations will be astronomical ("okay, we have a proven world-class manager, so obviously we'll now go one better than we managed with a nobody in charge").
We absolutely have to give someone the chance to make the team their own, and say right from the start that it may take some time. When José arrived he was saying that he expected to win the league within three years. That's the attitude we should take. Then they can get someone who really will bring their own style to the team.
I'd be very depressed if we got one of the names that's constantly on and off the merry-go-round (Sven, Lippi). Fortunately I'm sure Kenyon wants someone a bit cooler.
Sparky would make me much happier. Or O'Neill, but I doubt he's moving. Laudrup seems interesting. Keeping Stevie Clark (yet again) will be important, though the poor bloke must feel like he's the last sane person left in the lunatic-run asylum.
I think you will see a guy swimming the English channel out of the blue on national television if that happens.
Mark Hughes would be my second choice. But with where we already are, with the squad we already have, with the buying power we have, he would have to deliver immediately. That means, the League and Champions League. Would he be able to achieve that. The League, yes. All we need is some tweaking and discipline. He's right on the money for that. But the Champions League is the holy grail for Roman. Could Mark deliver that at his first or second attempt at the minimum?
More bollocks hallucinations from Kenn. I preferred him when he didn't write at all. Don't come back.
I for one would be happy to see Jose back at the Bridge but it doesn't really seem like it's going to happen. The size of the egos of both RA and JM would be the main stumbling block.
The pressure Jose would be under would be too intense even for someone with such strong self belief as he has.How long would Roman stay patient if we get off to a poor start and struggle in the opening games? It's no good saying that Jose would have a guarantee in his contract to have total control in footballing matters.Everyone knows that a football contract is not worth the paper it's written on.
It will be interesting to see if they go for another puppet like manager, who has his strings pulled by someone else.I really hope they dont go for someone who's on a downward spiral and is looking for one last big payday.
It seems accepted that Roman's dream is The Champions League,if that is the case Mancini would be a strange choice. He won the Italian title on consecutive seasons, albeit against some teams stripped of points and losing some big names because of it.
But anyone witnessing Inter's dismal performance against Liverpool,in both legs, will find it hard to have any optimism in the Champions League.
Would Scolari,Ancelloti,Hiddink and co really have the appetite for a season long battle in the Premiership?
Frank Rijkaard seems in need of a rest to recharge his batteries and even though he's won the Champions League, does he have the drive and desire to do it again?
So that leaves us with Mark Hughes.I don't think many fans would object too much if he became our next manager. He's young, ambitious, well respected by players and managers alike and has the ambition to become a top manager. He has made players like Bentley and Santa Cruz into potential tranfer targets for much bigger clubs.
People say that he hasn't had much european experience but he managed Wales from 1999-2004 and only just missed out on a place in Euro 2004 after losing to Russia in the playoffs. He would be my choice if Jose didn't return.
What we can be sure of is that whatever happens, most of us will disagree with the choice because we all know that being a Chelsea fan is never easy.
As the lyric goes for The Hours' song -
It will be the greatest comeback since Lazarus!
Oh and Btw, incase you havent heard of that song...go on..its a thing of beauty!
The Hours - Ali in the Jungle
I hope he comes back in 3 or so years - he will learn so much in italy that will add to his game.
Mancini is getting knocked unfairly - fifty Inter were boring but they did have a man sent off in each leg unfairly - liverpool hardly cause any team to play well against them, liverpool tend to try and stifle the other team. Also Mancini's budget was quite small and the italian league doesnt attract the best players.
I think the mancini/zola link is the best bet and one that will yield rewards unless TSO will come back. if not then lets hope he comes back in 3/4 years time.
Ancelotti - i agree on him - i dont want him.
Sparky would be good IMO - lots of potential.
LYNN is spot on. Whoever turns up at Stamford Bridge, not everyone's gonna be happy about it.
It wouldn't be interesting if we all agreed would it?!
Lollipop, Saturday's getting near and no one is appointed. you haven't forgotten your promise, right? you promised me a new manager will be named by Saturday.
:'(

ZOLAAAAAAAA
Loved the youtube, had me in stitches..cheating t**t that he is!!!
Villa Park? Is that just past the Moon? Give the f***er a one way ticket!!!
Hi all, there are some posts on here talking about Mark Hughes in terms of a young manager as opposed to Jm which incidentally I dont think will be back although stranger things happen! the fact is Mark H is 44 the same age as JM! A young option would be the croatian manager. Not touted by press or anyone else but something tells me he could do something and we'd all be behind him to give him a chance at least no? OF course he's no JM but hey lets give someone totally new a chance rather than the usual suspects. He does have some high profile experience and he is in the Euros so that counts for soemthing. Anyway, that my thoughts.

This is all that p**** deserves and a move to Villa.
@ Clive, Tony
Waiting for your speculation.
Kenn..... I have been thinking the same for a while now, and as unlikely as it seems, the longer it takes Jose to be formally announced as Inter's new boss, the more likely it becomes.
The biggest plus from getting Jose back now, is it actually allows us to move on. If he comes back and fails, the next manager actually gets a proper chance to manage without all of the Mourinho baggage. Let's face it, in most Chelsea supporters eyes (Mark excluded), he is a legend and currently will be remembered as such.
If he comes back and succeeds, then it is a great result all round.
All the talk is that he will come back in a few years but now is too soon. That is the worst possible scenario, because all it does is effectively leave us in limbo, swapping manager every year or two until he comes back.
Of the other choices available, I have now made my decision and it is Sparky every time for me.
Ok, a night of Guinness, a big fat Cuban cigar I couldn't spark up last week because we lost, and a load of Joan Jett visually, audibly, but unfortunately not orally :-) with eclectic added mixture of Tenpole Tudor, The Skids and The Sweet have convinced me of my previous argument ( #108 on my post season review) - lets forget the 'previous track record' bollocks once and for all - it proves nothing about future performance - look at LTB in paragraph 7 - it aligns perfectly with my own view - pick someone on potential who we're prepared to stick with long term and support.
Do what Arsenal did, pick a future Wenger and for me Sparky fits the bill at number 1 , but Deschamps, Laudrup et al fit the bill as well. I'm with Fifty on Ancelotti, the milk is soured there. Lippi - too old. Hiddinck, committed to the Euros. SGE - a good choice if we go down the older route. But for fucks sake forget the 'proven track record' (hereinafter known as PTR) route. Past performance is no indicator of future performance as stated earlier.
I've been IMPRESSED by Kenyons recent statements and its clear he didn't want Avram, but played the dutiful CEO role. I think he's persuaded RA to think longer term now and what we'll see is Mark Hughes annointed in the next 10 days. Kenyon said the announcement is due within 10 days tonight on CFC TV....which points to a non-Euro involved coach. Whatever happensd it has to be better than AG.
Kenn, welcome back mate. Good posting, even if I think its ...possibly wrong :-)
#14- Fifty, it is your dream come true!
#2- Listen, I like Martin O'Neill too. But he has a problem... he lost a cup final to Mourinho. Again, not a step up.
Yes Mourinho will go to Inter Milan but hes back on good terms with RA and says that he wouldnt rule out a return in the future so fingers crossed
Kenyon backed Mourinho just before they sacked him
Kenyon backed Grant just before they sacked him
Kenyon backed Henk Ten Cate just before they sacked him
PKs "backing" is like the kiss of death
I've read the same theories on Blue Champions blog as well. I'll believe it the same day I see a UFO or eat a Southern (U.S.) pork barbeque sandwich in Boston or some other "Yankee" city.
That is a good analysis regarding the present situation.
My opinion is that Mourinho will come back - and he should come back with full management control- only if the likes of Peter Kenyon and the rest of the board are dismissed from the club. They stabbed Mourinho and the supporters in the back when Peter Kenyon wilfully denied the central defender and the forward that would have enabled us to win the Champions League Title in 2007. We played that season with only one central defender because of Peter Kenyon´s wilful and premeditated decision, which hurt the club´s goals.
Peter Kenyon is the snake that has prevented Chelsea from winning the Champions League in 2007 and therefore it is absolutely necessary that he leaves Chelsea.
Shame on you, Peter Kenyon!!!!!!!!!!!
The only problem with Mancini is if we appointed him then he would proberbly want his right hand man at Inter (Sinisa Mihajlovic) to be his assistant
Didn't Mr Emetulu say this sometime ago?...
"Those supporters openly ridiculing AG must now back off. It’s not yet Avramania up my alley, but stranger things have happened in football."
Now he is saying...
Those supporters openly ridiculing AG must now come back. It's not yet the second coming of Jose, but stranger things have happened in football.
:-)
Moratti (Inter chairman) and Mourinho planning the future in Paris
I too have been of this opinion for the last week. Your analysis and thought process is very logical. Two other factors that could be included in the rationale.
By countering the Inter Milan "offer", and they can (!), Chelsea would immediately negate the "transfer" of potentially Drogba/Essien/ Lampard/ Carvalho.
JM has indicated that a stumbling point would be the retention of Arnesen. If he goes in the next few days, then the table really is laid.
Putting emotion to one side, the return of the Special One would be fantastic for the club, its asperations, the Premiership, the fans, the media, etc. etc.
Give Abramovich some credit! He saved our club and has put us in the position where we are discussing this (rather than relegation to the second division - if you are old enough to remember).
Good management includes learning from experience, taking all factors into consideration, and adjusting accordingly.
If it happens, Abramovich would be credited with the most masterful of business strokes. All this media talk is pure speculation. Logic, and an examination of all the facts, makes this at the very least a distinct possibility.
If we are still dreaming of world domination, i hope the people in the board has the brains to retain our top players including Carvalho and Essien. Thats the first major issue that we need to settle this summer after appointing a new manager. Lampard, Essien and Carvalho. We need to see all 3 of them at Chelsea next season.

i believe this seals the deal. Sorry Kenn, I wanted to believe the same thing but it just wasn't to be.
Oh pleeeeez! Vikram, read it again - nothing is confirmed! Sky sports need to have a story. Are you also a member of the Flat Earth Society?
If Kenn's theory is to be evaluated, then at least make a considered point.
Evening all,
Good article Kenn, but it seems rather unlikely - not entirely sure we should go back to Jose however much I rate him - whatever the rift was, it is unlikely to have gone away in recent months; move forwards and appoint someone with no baggage and some decent potential, back them and see how we go. Concern is that the club don't really seem to have a plan in place post-Grant, which is a worry as lessons don't appear to have been learned.
Can't understand why on earth we'd be talking to Ancelotti - he's never shown the slightest interest in leaving Italy and surely the Italian national side is the next move for him when he leaves AC.
I think that we can all expect the unexpected, why should appointing our next manager be anything but difficult.
I can't help but think that the choice will be unexpected and a bit out of the blue. When have we done anything that's expected of us,Grant being a prime example.
I just hope that the majority of Blues fans are happy and we all give whoever it is our full backing. At least this time there will be no conspiracy theories to deal with we can all look forward to next season with renewed hope and excitement.
I totally agree with Lynn - when have Chelsea ever done anything expected? When Vialli left who thought we would have hired some guy called Claudio who couldn't speak English? When we were 24 hours away from going bust who knew about some Russian saviour from Chukotka, who happened to have 11 billion in his bank account? Who thought we would sack Ranieri and appoint Jose? (I know he had just won the CL but every club in Europe wanted him.) Who predicted us winning back to back titles, and 4 more trophies in 3 years under Jose? Then who saw Jose's sacking and the appointment of some fat, Gordon Brown lookalike from Israel, who would take us to the promised land of a CL final?
Chelsea seem to like doing things unexpectedly, whether it's appointing new managers or signing new players: 24 hrs after losing the title we bought Bosingwa for £16m, who saw that coming? That's why i think it'll be someone who has drifted in the betting and isn't being talked about. This could work out well for us, perhaps Laudrup will suddenly arrive at the Bridge or even a sighting of Jose at Heathrow talking to Kenyon? But it could also end in disaster, with Sven suddenly being announced at a press conference next week. So whoever we appoint it'll be a surprise and whoever we buy this year, i expect further surprises: Kaka, Messi or Villa? If last year is anyhting to go by then the surprises may not be too nice, i.e. appointing a manager with no qualifications and buying the likes of TBH and Pizarro on frees. Expect the unexpected!
KTBFFH
It would appear the impending Euro 2008 finals has put a dampener on transfer activity. I guess most top players (English excepted of course) are plying their trade for the respective countries and are probably gagged or have little desire to think about which club they will play for next season.
I hope we appoint a new manager soon because the wait is agonising. Besides surely it will be important to have the new manager in place well before the boys come back from holidays (or playing in the Euros). There will be lots of scouting opportunities during the Euros. It seems likely that neither Scolari or Hiddink are now serious contenders so I don't understand whats really holding the club other than negotiations.
Lets hope the club can put us out of our misery in the next few days and make an announcement!
KTBFFH
Why does anyone actually buy the newspapers at all?
I reckon I can now provide links showing why each of Laudrup, Deschamps, Hughes, Scolari, Ancellotti, Mourinho, Hiddink, Rijkaard, Mancini and Sven are definately going to be manager..... and then links to show they are definately not going to be manager!
Seriously, it is a bloody joke.... Nobody has a clue...... Not least it would seem our extended Board Room clowns, who clearly did not have anyone lined up, and, if you believe Saturday's press will decide today, or today's press, will decide after the Euro's?
Frankly, I have a bad feeling I am going to be disappointed by whoever we choose in the end, so I have decided to stop looking until it is decided!
What's going on?
Already the natives are getting restless at our inactivity in the transfer market and the search for our next fall guy, sorry,I mean manager.
Reports that Mark Hughes is going to Man.City and Dos Santos is going to Spuds.
Why does our boardroom have the appearance that they are sticking their heads in the sand and are just hoping for players and managers to knock down their door?
Does anyone think that when McFergie leaves so many managers would be in such a rush to distance themselves from Manure?
I just get a bad feeling that we will end up with someone only the board wants to manage us and only the players that the big teams don't want.
Please,please,please Chelsea prove me wrong.
@ Greenlight
"Why does anyone actually buy the newspapers at all?"
To line the bird cage...
To do the puzzles...
To read Hagar the Horrible...
Ummmm... yep thats it...
To enjoy the spectacle of ManU panicking and sweating about their grease-coiffed golden boy. The moment when PurpleNose accused Real Madrid of moral deficiency was particularly fine. Oh, and today I read that he's been saying how much he loves the Glazers. More, more!
Events in recent days have shown that getting a new manager is not as easy as some of us thought...
Most managers would see the chelsea job as a pressure cooker one!
I'm sure quite a number of them would have felt that AG fared well and deserved a second chance, even though that is not the thinking of most people here...
We are obviously faced with the dilema of choosing from two classes...experienced and inexperienced
The experienced ones would not likely want to gamble their career on chelsea having seen that the standards set are quite high...the only ones likely to end up here are the rejects from top clubs...the likes of Rijkaard and Mancini
On the other hand, the 'inexperienced' ones may end up like AG by doing the 'almost' routine...and then questions would arise again as to the need for sacking AG in the 1st place...
If AG had been allowed to stay one more season, we may still not win anything but the pressure on his successor would not have been as thick as we have now...
The established clubs can afford to sack their managers at anytime they desire and still attract the right managers and players in the transfer market because they already have their brand/goodwill working for them...this is definitely not the case with chelsea yet, so our management needs to learn and apply the art of patience and plan appropriately...
If we go for inexperience...I'd like to see Bilic...He's played in the league and has international experience...He's also got a lot of self belief too...He'll also be fresh in the real sense of the word, as in not 'coloured' with management in the EPL
Just wish we'd get out of this jam ASAP, as its begining to sap me emotionally...we'v got next season to prepare for (transfers and all) and the earlier we start the better...
Always Blue!
SGE has officially gone then.
So he'll be lined up for us, Sparky will go to Citeh I reckon.
I’m sure quite a number of them would have felt that AG fared well and deserved a second chance, even though that is not the thinking of most people here…
Nor in the boardroom at Chelsea, apparently...
@36 TG - relieved to hear that Kenyon said on Friday he expected an announcement within 10 days - though as Greenlight says above[@57] some of today's papers are claiming it won't be till after Euro 2008 now.
My Major Nightmare No. 1 would be we allow Scolari to string us along till after Euro 2008 before he finally says no, we make forlorn efforts to get Hiddink to change his mind and in the meantime Sparky gets fed up waiting for us and goes elsewhere [ not Man City surely?].
Minor Nightmare No. 2 is we resurrect the old love affair with Sven now that he's finally parted from City by "mutual consent" - good to see we don't have a monopoly on the bullshit.
I've had enough of the rubbish in the media too - I'm reminded of William Goldman's famous quote about picking hit movies in Hollywood - "Nobody Knows Anything" - please put us out of our misery soon.
I cannot tolerate this indecisiveness by the board. We are letting talents(players/managers) slip away every single day. And before we know it, the club is left with nothing. Money can buy nothing. :\
>JD (no 64)
Yea....The Board....
Little wonder most people believe that the Board is the hub of chelsea's problems....
I'd happily agree with you there Alex, although some of their recent decisions have been OK... as was said of Grant on here maybe true about them - even the blind hen pecks a bit of corn every now and again... ;-)
Not sad he's gone, of course, but at least they did the (vaguely) decent thing and ended it quickly which made it look like there was at least a plan in place - now, I'm not so sure. This, I suspect, is where our views on the powers that be in SW6 are somewhat similar...
Has anybody thought of giving Stevie Clark the job with a good assistant? I know it wont happen but if there was someone who has been a loyal and tru Chelsea man it is Stevie. I would even handle not winning anything for one season just to give someone like that a chance who is even more Chelsea than John Terry. I know we'd all be behind him and so long as they fought hard and at least came close I would say, ok, did'nt work out but hey at least we gave him the chance no? too far fetched maybe, shame really. I think the CFC fans need someone like Stevie to get behind whatever happens.
@ 68. JD
Actually, I blame your article 'Why AG must go' that influenced Chelsea board's decision to sack AG! :-)
BREAKING NEWS all over the newswires...Jose has signed for Inter.......Dream over Kenn!! Oh well, now we will need to hurry up, the musical chairs is about to stop and we will be the ones left standing without one of the better coaches! Can you believe it, what is going on!!!!!!!
Well Inter have finally confirmed TSO's appointment so the rumours of raids on our squad will no doubt multiply exponentially - especially as long as we have an empty chair.
@70 Dio - I have huge respect for Steve Clarke and his link with Chelsea past [and he's from my home town] - but realistically I think we can only hope he stays on as No.2 to the new appointment - the leap to manager seems to much with his lack of profile outside the club/fans.
The Special One... We'll meet again!... but please not in CL Final!
SimonT - when this blog speaks, those in power listen (eventually!)... :-)
Citeh are on to Sparky. If there are factions among the Chelsea suits who support him, they'll probably have to move fast. I bet BBD (65) is right -- infighting will mean we'll end up having to wait until after the Euros, and then throw money at any remaining big names (Scolari) and hope it comes off.
I'd have more confidence if it wasn't for what happened in September. Who exactly thought AG was going to be the long term solution?
Could be two or three years of Real-Madrid-style chaos until Franco finally says he's ready to give it a shot.
As far as I see it, the club have to fight with City for Hughes' signature now. If we do, I believe we'll win. From what I have heard from many other fans recently, he would be the most unifying choice as an English speaker, ex-Chelsea man and an authoritarian who would be able to control the egos in the dressing room, but the club have to be prepared to give him longer than Grant.
Sparky's a young manager who has shown promise with Wales and Blackburn. His signings at the latter have been very astute and we've seen several times over the years that he is capable of beating members of the Big Four. It'd be a massive risk from the board's point of view. I don't envy their decision at all.
Apparently... Drogba, Lampard, Essien and Carvalho are now looking for houses in Italy! ;-)
Well it was always on the cards, but just wanted to send my best wishes to Jose.
You're a legend, always will be. Would be nice to see you back as manager one day, but we'll do you in the Champs League every year until then.
SimonT,
I'd be more upset losing the second two names than the first two.
@ Fifty
I wanna keep all the top players, otherwise, we won't have a chance in CL and we'll regret it. Even now, I'm still very upset about losing Robben.
Its funny that we are looking into the market for transfers when the most important thing first and foremost is to keep the likes of Essien and Carvalho with us before we can even talk about buying new players! That is why a new manager in place ASAP is so damn bloody important. Before our key players get poached away, they need some assurance or their hearts will stay to sway. I really hate the ugly side of Kenyon and co.
It was a nice thought while it lasted. He'll come back one day. But for now, good luck to Jose in this new challenge. Except if we meet Inter in the Champions League...
City fans reckon Hughes is only expressing an interest to spark an offer from Chelsea. fingers crossed...
Scolari no, but Sven would be OK for me. I still think this makes Hughes more likely and the truth is no-one knows anything, not the papers, not the Tv. Whatever is happening is very much behind closed doors. Thats no bad thing if they get it right. Why tell everyone what you're doing if negotations are at a sensitive stage?
also, this could provoke a bidding war between the two milan clubs for drogba... be nice to be on the right side of an overpriced transfer for once.
The silence is deafening coming from The Bridge, everyone seems to think that we will end up with a manager that nobody wants and we will be too late to sign any of the available big name players.
So the obvious question is,what are the Board doing at this precise moment to ease our worried minds and stop endless, pointless, deliberations on who's coming and when.
Is it so much to ask to actually keep the fans informed as to what is going on?
Is it because RA is Russian that everything has to have KGB like mystery surrounding the transfer of players and the appointment of managers?
While our stress levels continue to rise,is Peter Kenyon sitting on a balcony somewhere sipping a cocktail, seemingly wihout a care in the world?
Somebody,somewhere please tell us SOMETHING!!!
Well with TSO definitely not coming back this time around its time to re-examine the list of possible candidates.
I list them below with a little aide memoir in the form of Fictional Detectives from film and TV.
They are in no particular order of favouritism.
Scolari – Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman) in The French Connection. Don’t f**k with him or he’ll beat the living bejaysus out of you. Has walked the streets and stared at the dark underbelly of football without so much as blinking.
Rijkard - Tubbs from Miami Vice. Was the last word in super cool, all action, great to watch - but looking increasingly dated. Might struggle in a chunky belted cardigan. The dark underbelly of football holds no fears.
Laudrup - Starsky. Young and making his mark. Would look good in a belted chunky cardigan. Not frightened to explore the dark underbelly of football tactics.
Mark Hughes – Detective Regan of the Sweeney. The only one of the candidates who could convincingly shout “ We’re the Sweeney son, and we haven’t had any dinner!” Not only has be pierced the soft underbelly of football but he’s probably eaten it with chips, beans and a cup of tea.
Mancini - Lt Vincent Hanna (as played by Al Pacino in Heat). One of the best, great track record, but can be hell to live with. Emotional, unpredictable. Looks at the dark underbelly of football and perhaps shouts too much.
Deschamps – Denis Klein (as played by Gerard Depardieu in 36 Quai des Orfevres). Rough, tough, mean, well hard. The dark underbelly of the football world is his milieu (note the use of French here).
Hiddink – van der Valk. Well how many fictional Dutch detectives do you know? He’s Dutch and knows a lot about football including its dark underbelly.
Advocaat - Det. Frank Cannon. Forgotten by many but still showing he’s fast on his feet for an old ‘un. The dark underbelly of football is nowhere near as large as his belly.
SGE – Poirot. No physical resemblance but unlike the others he relies solely on the little grey cells and not shouting and fighting. More at home with the soft underbelly of Ulrika, Nancy, Faria etc. etc.
Ancelloti – Maigret. Getting on, seen it all. Wouldn’t really want to go too far, as his wife is preparing a rather fine dinner. Has seen more dark underbelly than is good for him.
Feel free to critique or enhance as you see fit...
"...So the obvious question is,what are the Board doing at this precise moment to ease our worried minds..."
Kenyon is sitting in his ivory tower counting the yen coming in from our trip to Asia - one for the club, one for Peter.
Bruce Buck is probably trying to engineer a tour of his homeland as is Roman and Eugene.
Someone needs to remind them we need a manager.
I think I want Scolari less than I want Ancelotti. Not sure why, there's just something about him; some sort of smarmy arrogance (some would say suited to us then !!!). Maybe it's because he manages the Portugese who continually destroy my hopes for International success (well, kind of). He doesn't speak English.
Still hoping for Hughes or Riijkaard, maybe a role for Zola somewhere.
BTW, this is quite an interesting read about what awaits Jose at Inter :
LINK
By the sounds of things, it'll be home-from-home for him and any players who swap the Bridge for the San Siro.....
Incidentally, and not to belabour the obvious, but the top clubs in Europe don't exactly seem to be battering on AG's door, do they?
Expect to see him at the Cincinnati Soccercats MLS kickerball franchise. Or maybe Steve McUmbrella's number two at FC Twente.
Can somebody make Blue Bayou's piece a new blog? it deserves wider consultation.
Personally, I see Rijkaard as more of a Huggy Bear character. Hughes is surely Dirty Harry Callahan. Sven has something of the Inspector Morse about him.
I had to stop reading at Rikjaard - Tubbs for a moment to compose myself. But I still want to know who football's Juliet Bravo is.
Less obvious names - how about Thomas Schaaf at Werder Bremen? Decent track record as a manager, produces good attacking sides (albeit a bit suspect defensively on occasion) - very much a one-club man at present, but the right offer could tempt him. And he might even persuade Diego to come with him.
He has also sported a slightly Inspector Frost style 'tache, if that helps...
Hmm. I hadn't considered the obvious requirement of the future coach to surreptitiously be linked to famous detectives of large and small screen. But thinking about BB's marvellous piece has given me a firm conclusion. With 'Taggart' successfully holding sway at Old Trafford some 15 years after the death of the real Taggart, and Arsene Wenger so obviously being the hybrid of Inspector Wexford and his faithful assisatnt Mike Burden, I feel we need to up our game here.
So my suggestion is we bring back an old Chelsea boy, someone who has had us singing from the rafters and who understands what we, the fans want, but whom also has a deeper understanding of the dark underbelly of football and the machinations of organizations based in secrecy, where it's important to know who your moles are, who is prepared to support your wild theories and assumptions.Someone who is prepared to trust no-one and suspect anyone, no matter how ....ahem...alien the idea might be. Someone well versed in conspiracy theories and who can always refer back to the Lone Gunmen (Zola, Desailly and Vialli)
Step forward the current coach of Unirea Urziceni. Our very own Fox Mulder aka David Duchovny lookalike, Super-Dan Petrescu.
The headline news on Chelsea TV was that JM had signed for Inter Milan, are they taking the piss, don't they think we know that and how good does it make us feel that our best ever manager has gone to Italy.
Chelsea should start treating the fans with respect and RA should do so also,he may have saved the club but when he decides to go,we'll still be here.
Sky are reporting that Hughes should be Man City manager by Wednesday,do we really have anyone lined up or are we hoping that Scolari or Hiddink will get knocked out early from Euro 2008 and decide to grudgingly join us.
The longer the silence goes on,the harder it will be for the fans to think that the board actually know what the hell they're doing. This is simply not good enough and yet again we are looking like a club who are in crisis and simply have no idea who to turn to next. The board and RA have turned the managers job into a poisoned chalice and one that doesn't seem as attractive since they started playing manager merry-go-round.
What exactly does Simon Greenberg do to earn his kings ransom,he is,I quote"Responsible for external and internal communications, media and public relations"
Don't you think it's time he actually did something to earn his money?
@ 97 - Lynn - I share the frustration. I think letting Hughes slip through the net would be a terrible mistake and .well.....Hiddinck and Scolari better than SGE? In what way exactly...all of which leads me to believe if it isn't Hughes then it will be SGE or Mancini, with SGE possibly just ahead because we have no compensation to pay and he's already UK based.
Simon Greenberg is an utter joke. His PR skills are up their with those of Ken Bates.
Am I the only one slightly underwhelmed by talk of Scolari? He has been known to twat the odd journalist though, which could be amusing.
@TONY
I agree but it really annoys me that we going after managers deemed not good enough by their own clubs, are we really only able to get Man City's cast off.
I think the performance of everyone on the board stinks and when we finally appoint someone,it will be "Our 1st choice and we fought to get him" all the usual crap that we're starting to get used to.They must think we're like sheep, whatever they do,we'll blindly follow along wagging our tails.
From aiming to become one of the world's top teams,we're starting to become one of footballs biggest laughing stocks.A club once feared and respected,we have now become a Russian billionaire's plaything with no heart or soul at club level.
Once envied by many, now laughed at by most.
One the bright side of Big Phil, he can attract some top Portugese players into our team. E.g. Quaresma, Veloso and Moutinho etc. Im getting restless with the Chelsea board...
@LYNN
Its because of some clowns treating the club as a circus.
Avram Grant = a more bumbling version of Columbo
Despite my low opinion of the board, surely they won't let Sparky slip away unless they have an alternative. On second thoughts, given their track record in the last year, they probably don't.
After Hughes, I can't choose between:
- Scolari (unlikely to come, and unlikely to decide until Portugal are out of the Euros)
- Hiddink (even more unlikely)
- Rijkaard (may join if offered)
- Mancini (will join if offered)
I would place Sven after the above, but I think he would be OK
We'll be fine with any of the above, though my personal preference is for Zola to be involved (not surprising given my moniker) and also for Clarkey. So Zola/Clarke/A N Other - possibly Laudrup
The mood seems to be that our shortlist is dwindling to a big fat ZER0. Do you think we should create a new post "The Return of Avram"? He's still available apparently.
Still there's one thing for certain - we'll be drawn against Inter in next seasons CL.
It seems that the board have decided against building for the future with a young, talented, up and coming manager (Hughes or Laudrup) and instead have decided to wait until after the Euros for the ageing or experienced as Simon Greenberg would spin it coaches who seem to have built their reputations in International tournaments (Hiddink, Scolari). It seems a perfect plan in the board's mind. Except that none of these coaches are a long term fix, and neither of them are suited to club football. Either of these choices will have to be replaced in a few years, and just to cement this perfect plan, Scolari can't even speak English.
The lack of vision from the board is almost laughable. Roman sacked Jose on the back of a sulk, without seeing the consequences (loss of morale, players staying loyal to Jose, a possible player exodus this summer), then they decided to hire Avram, a matter of hours later without looking long term (the fact that he's incompetent, players never respected him...) then they gave him a 4 year contract despite him always being a stop gap and now the board appear to be only thinking about an old, expereinced manager who would again be a short term stop-gap. This lack of vision seems to carry on to player recruiting. Did they really think that TBH and Pizarro would develop into first team players, or even substitutes?
The board need to look to the future both off the pitch and on it. Why not do a Germany or Holland and appoint a young, talented manager like Klinsmann or Van Basten. These two as well as Hughes and Laudrup are going to be the great coaches of the future and it looks like we are going to let every other big club appoint them. Why did we appoint Avram, when both Klinsmann and Van Basten were available and waiting for a new job? Now they'll be revolutionising Bayern and Ajax whilst we'll be stuck with some old codger like Sven. The same should apply with players. We have according to Avram 20 scouts scouring South America and many more across Europe, yet we never seem to find a Kaka, Messi or Bojan. When we did find a good youngster (Alexandre Pato) we couldn't even secure that deal due to the price (£16m) and instead opted for Pizarro. Brilliant decision!
This isn't even a recent problem. When Ranieri left he said that in the crazy summer of 2003 with Roman's first and only truly blank cheque transfer window, he drew up a list which included: a young Fernando Torres, a younger Steven Gerrard and an 18 yr old Cristiano Ronaldo. Who did we end up with? Oh yes those bright young things, Geremi, Veron, Mutu and Crespo. Then in 2006 Roman was looking to buy one star player. Did he look to spend his millions on a Kaka? No, he went for the over the hill Sheva. And then last year when Jose requested 3 players: Micah Richards, Dani Alves, Alexandre Pato, he was given TBH, Belletti and Pizarro by the board. This trend of overlooking the best young players, letting them develop at clubs who are willing to take a risk like Liverpool on Torres or Milan on Kaka and Pato, and then hoping to snatch them for some ridiculous price, is why i don't hold out much hope for this summer's buys. We should be getting Richards at CB to replace Ricky if he leaves, Van der Vaart to replace Sidwell, letting Mikel replace the relic that is Maka, Ashley Young to replace Malouda, Benzema, Aguero, Villa and/or Huntelaar to replace our embarrassingly old front line. Yet we'll probably go for stars who are on the way down like Eto'o or even Ronaldinho. The club should look ahead and appoint a young manager and buy some young players. If not then we'll let shit clubs like Liverpool and Spurs to poach the best young talent. Why are Spurs allowed to rebuild their squad with young talent like Gareth Bale, Modric, Bostock and Dos Santos whiilst we end up with over the hill shit like Pizarro. The board should wake up before we turn into the old people's home that we deride Newcastle for being.
KTBFFH
OOOOOO!!!!! All this speculation is frustrating!!
I don't want Scholari, i agree, there's something dodgy looking about him..and how old is he??!!!! He's gotta be knocking on for 100!!
Sven won't be coming, he's agreed to go to Mexico.
Hiddink said a definite "no", which i'm happy about because i didn't want him either!!
I'm still not sure about Sparky..from what SSN have been saying, Man City are expecting to sign him as Manager sometime within the next 2 days..
I think it's still between Rijkaard and Mancini..and i think it'll be Mancini, which i personally won't be pleased about..but as LYNN says, not all of us are going to be happy with the final decision, whoever it may be.
Give J.T the player/manager role FFS!!!!
Up the Chels xxx
Mancini or Scolari, that leaves us with.
I'm still clinging onto hope that Deschamps might be one of the candidates, even though it's more likelly he was talking himself up to attract Lyon's attention.
And it's official, the special one will not be returning to the Bridge. Fuck Inter Milan.
@99 JD - "Am I the only one slightly underwhelmed by talk of Scolari? He has been known to twat the odd journalist though, which could be amusing."
Nope - I too am also underwhelmed. It's as if they're choosing the new coach by playing Top Trumps. Scolari gets the highest number of points by virtue of winning a World Cup with Brazil, whereas Hughes is lower because he's only managed lowly Wales and Blackburn.
I fear the worst....
TONY
Wasn't that the 2002 World Cup he won when he was a youthful 94 years old?!
Frustration and irritation. Do those clowns sitting in the boardroom even know how to run the circus?
Another question for our illustrious bunch of boardroom clowns.......
Why the hell have you made Lampard wait an entire year, until Mourinho now offers him an alternative destination, to offer him exactly what he wanted from the start - that being wage parity with JT?
We will lose Lampard now, and we will also lose Drogba. Carvalho, I think will stay, but only if we end up with Scolari (God Forbid!), and if Essien decides to go as well, we can forget acieving anything at all in the short term.
If we don't get a boss soon, we will miss out on all of the top players on offer, because no player in their right mind will commit without knowing who the boss will be. If Hughes decides on City over us, it just shows how incompetent they must be.
Sky Sports News understands members of the Chelsea hierarchy want Mark Hughes as the club's next manager.
The Blackburn Rovers boss is now at the centre of a managerial tug-of-war after Manchester City also made an approach for Hughes.
The former Manchester United striker was given permission by Blackburn on Monday to speak to City regarding the possibility of replacing Sven Goran Eriksson at Eastlands.
But Sky Sports News understands that Hughes is one of two names in the frame to replace Avram Grant in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.
Senior Chelsea figures met outside the country on Monday to discuss the appointment of a new boss, with Hughes and a foreign candidate in contention to succeed Grant.
Chelsea's hunt for their next manager has now 'seriously gathered pace' and a decision is understood to be imminent.
How much of this is true remains to be seen.
Im as frustrated as everyone else, WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR? RA must make up his mind NOW and Kenyon must do whatever it takes to bring in a WORLD CLASS manager because if we dont do it soon then our top players will leave due to JMs new club and we will also miss out on top transfer targets this summer, Im getting so frustrated I almost dont even care who we get just get a great manager and do it as soon as possible. Rijkaard, Mancini, Laudrup and Sparky would proberbly all accept the job if it was offered to them right now, LETS GET IT DONE ALREADY
LINK
Just to clarify Lynn's last entry. This is the good news I've been hoping for all day!
Sorry for not saying that it came from Sky Sports website,I was in a rush to get it posted, will be a bit clearer next time, sorry.
Thanks PEREGRINE(CHRIS)for your help.
:) No worries! I planned on posting the link anyway, but I saw you got there first! ;)
This from The Times Website
"City will open talks with Hughes today or tomorrow - Garry Cook, who was ratified as City's executive chairman yesterday, will lead the negotiations - but with the Blackburn manager also in contention for the vacancy at Stamford Bridge, Hughes is unlikely to commit his future to City until Chelsea's intentions become clearer.
Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner, Peter Kenyon, the chief executive, and other figures from the club's hierarchy were meeting last night as the search for a first-team coach to replace Avram Grant, who was sacked ten days ago, intensifies. Although City appear to be in pole position to land Hughes, Chelsea could yet hijack any attempted deal and leave Thaksin Shinawatra, the City owner, to pursue other targets.
Intriguingly, many of the names on the Stamford Bridge shortlist also feature on that of Thaksin, although given Chelsea's loftier status and greater spending power, West London remains the more attractive venue. City have all but conceded defeat in their efforts to lure Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Portugal coach, who, along with Carlo Ancelotti, of AC Milan, and Hughes is in the running to succeed Grant"
I won't be convinced until we see Kenyon's smug grin announcing our new manager, still got a bad feeling it will go wrong and we end up with a reject from another club.
So ....now the game is on .......if you were Sparky where would you go?
Man City, run by well known human rights activist, desperately seeking credibility in the west, attained riches by alleged dubious means, treats club as plaything but has NOT SHOWN any genuine love for the club, the game or the fans - Thaksin Shinawatra
Chelsea, run by well known Russian oligarch with major contacts within Russian political system, desperately sought and achieved credibility in the west, attained riches by alleged dubious means but never proven, treats club as plaything but has GENUINE love for club, fans and game - Roman Abramovich
Surely there's only one winner.........
@TONY
Even in a two horse race,I wouldn't bet on our board to come first,I really hope they've decided to come out of the deep sleep they've been in since Grant went.
I agree there there should only be one winner but anything is possible when Kenyon gets involved.
114 Lynn.... "Chelsea’s hunt for their next manager has now ’seriously gathered pace’ and a decision is understood to be imminent. "
Surely begs the question....What the fuck have they all been doing for 2 weeks!
120. TG...... You would have to think that Hughesy would choose Chelsea if it comes down to a straight choice, wouldn't you? Going to City would seriously piss off the Utd fans, probably more than coming to Chels. At least he has a connection with us.
Afraid not. It looks as though Jose goes to Inter. It's for the best anyhow. Before he left he left the squad in shambles. Drawing to Rosenborg...
Here's to a new manager (though most choices seem far from good)I guess we'll have to settle for Rijkaard. Pity about Hiddink.
To be fair, it's possible -- likely, even -- that the silence from our suits conceals a lot of work going on behind the scenes. In fact this is probably the better way to do business, frustrating as it is for us. Citeh have to declare their interest in candidates because they know they probably can't compete with us in a straight fight, so they need to try and move faster than we can. It looks a bit undiginified and desperate. Staying quiet until you have something concrete to announce is probably the better way to go.
Of course, that's all assuming that the suits are actually competent to make a quick and correct decision. This from the people who thought that AG would turn us into a universally-loved European powerhouse.
They really have to hurry up now, though, or the exodus to Inter will begin.
@16 no you not Mark
Last I heard JM wants to sign "second rate eggs", may be Roman will give it to him for free as well
Beware Inter in CL final, only if he is lucky to dodge Lpoo on the semis
I was marginally cheered up when the stories discussed above broke last night that we actually seemed to be doing something- though it's all "Sky Sports understands" stuff as usual.
On reflection my "My Major Nightmare No. 1" [@65 above] still seems to stand as no one seems to know who our other candidate is - and I think the "D" of today's Guardian's A-Z Rumour Mill sums it up best:
"Don't believe everything you read though. It's all nonsense"
Please let it be over soon......
All quiet on the West London Front, looks like the board have gone back to burying their heads in the sand.I would really love to believe that the silence signals constant activity behind the scenes but I can't help thinking that Kenyon and Co. are watching Sky Sports News to find out what's going on as they have no idea themselves.
Good news on the 'Clarkie' front at last. Hopefully this would indicate a leaning towards Hughesy, rather than a foreign manager.
LINK
Hope it's true!
@130 Greenlight - doesn't that depend on if it's a foreign manager who takes same approach to TSO and wants an assistant with links to the club or not?
Weirdly it might be harder to find space for Clarke if Hughes wants to bring all of his current team which already has 2 other ex-Chelsea players [Hitchcock and Eddie N] plus Mark Bowen - though as I've said above I really hope he stays.
@93 Peter
Reserving Harry for when Roy the Boy starts to appear in the upper reaches of the betting. Clint with a Cork accent. I'd pay money to see that. Got to rule out Huggy as he is not technically a detective (general booing and hissing)
@95 JD
'Fraid I never watched Juliet Bravo, did I miss something special?
@96 TG
By those criteria Super Dan is a shoe-in. btw Wikipedia (yes I know..) states that Dan's current team are nicknamed Chelsea of Ialomi?a for what it's worth.
Habs makes a good point (#106) about the recruitment of players in recent years. I think one of the problems is that success has to happen now, this season, all the time and we want big name players (the promotion of TG's infamous brand) or at least seasoned pro's. We can't take time to develop players although you could question the contribution of some of the experienced players we have bought. The other side of the coin is that without recent success top young players will choose the clubs with (and god forgive me for typing this) a more established history of success.
So its a sort of vicious circle really. Is this the moment to step back? I fear that having come so close in Moscow, the pedal will still be to the floor.
Should we welcome the silence as ruthlessly efficient people getting the business done or just a buggers muddle? Move along the fence there I'm going to sit on here for a bit.
It's nice to see that Chelsea's scouts appear to be asleep at the moment. Yet another talented youngster (Cardiff's Aaron Ramsey) going to any club but Chelsea. Why don't we seem to invest in young, up and coming players anymore?
The last two good youngters we bought (Cech and Robben) were some of the best and most exciting Chelsea players in recent years, yet we seem to have dropped that buying policy.
Well Manure has started to strengthen while we continue to dither.
This is from BBC Website.
"Manchester United have agreed a fee with FA Cup finalists Cardiff City for teenage sensation Aaron Ramsey.
The Champions League and Premier League winners have had an offer accepted believed to be in the region of £5m to £6m.
Cardiff also had offers from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool for the Wales Under-21 star, BBC Sport understands.
Ramsey, 17, has played just 22 games for Championship side Cardiff.
A statement on United's official website read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has agreed terms with Cardiff City for the transfer of Aaron Ramsey subject to terms being agreed and the player passing a medical."
Are we going to be left behind again in signing new players or will we sign players like the Serbian defender who, since we signed him,has played more for his country than for us,after we were told he was injured and couldn't play for us.
Doesn't the club realise that we are getting very impatient to hear some sort of news regarding players or managers,or is it simply that they couldn't care less what we think?Anyone would think that we had done the double and we could afford to rest on our laurels. We should be leading the chase for new players, not looking like coming last again.
Talksport are reporting that Mark Hughes should be named Man City manager in the next 48hrs,are we really going to wait for a manager to get knocked out of Euro 2008 or be happy to accept a sacked manager, who's not deemed good enough for his former club?
@136 Mark - while we're in limbo land here's something we can actually decide on - how to refer to Jose from now on.
Just seen a clip of his news conference on Sky and I'd suggest TRO - The Restrained One - though that might be a facade that drops soon once the season starts. Should we expect Serie A to be high on all sports bulletins/ newspages in the British press now?
Not seen that much of Ramsey, but before we go berserk let's not forget we do have a rather talented team of youngsters who reached the FA Youth Cup final this year. Several good prospects in there that we haven't had to shell out silly money for - £5m for a 17 year old who hasn't completed a full season in the Championship and will probably play even less next season for United (if he isn't loaned back to Cardiff or elsewhere) is a lot of dosh. There isn't too much to get worried about here, really.
Blue Bayou - re Juliet Bravo; well, it wasn't quite 'The Sweeney' let's put it that way...
Slow and indecisive. Before we really turn against those circus clowns again like a few months back when Toady must making a mockery of the club, go get Sparky damn it!
Really hope something happens in the next 2 days.
139-
Speaking of our youth team, Ben Sahar to Portsmouth on loan has been mentioned.
I hope we manage to give a few others on loan to premiership sides this time around.
I'm afraid if we let Jose sign our best players for stupid prices we'll have to think of a new name for him.
TSO= The Stealing One
@ Blue Bayou - those endless library clips on Sky of managers in the news has evoked Major Catastrophic Nightmare Scenario No. 3 in my head- Sam Allardyce as blunt Northener DCI Gene Hunt!!!
@LYNN - I also had a tinge of frustration when I saw the Ramsay announcement. However we've already purchased a few promising youngsters that we've now put in the Youth Bank so I guess we've got to be realistic and accept that we can't buy every promising youth on the market.
Also with the respect to the managerial appointment it's also unrealistic to expect the club to give us minute by minute, blow by blow updates on their activity. We just have to live in hope that behind closed doors some decent activity is taking place.
Yikes! Mourinho has already started making the preliminary overtures to lure his/our players to the San Siro - how does the Board except to stop this when no manager is in place to convince the players otherwise?!
The difference with our youth buys is that we never seem able to take the risk on more expensive young players. Our youth side is littered with £1m - £2m players like Michael Woods, Franco di Santo and some £500,000 players like Scott Sinclair and Gael Kakuta but we don't seem to take a risk often enough on players under 21 years old who are worth much more than that, who have the ability to develop into great players. The last two we bought were Arjen Robben for £12m and Jon Obi Mikel for £16m and they were/are both the future of Chelsea before we stupidly sold Robben. Yet Utd have paid £6m for Ramsey, £20m for Rooney, £12m for Ronaldo, £30m for Nani and Anderson. Arsenal paid £10m for Walcott, Tottenham paid £7m for Bale, £5m for Bostock and potentially £8m for Dos Santos.
Chelsea should take more risks on more expensive young players because their price tag usually indicates their increased level of potential. We should have bought Alexandre Pato last year for £16m and Micah Richards for £18m, but we decided against taking the risk and opted for short term fixes like TBH and Pizarro on frees. We may have a good youth side at the moment but very few of them are likely to make it into Chelsea's first team of the future. Players like Rooney, Ronaldo, Anderson who were all young players bought for huge fees would have definitely made it into our side, and Chelsea's scouts should pull their finger out and start telling Kenyon to put bids in for these players otherwise we'll be left trailing with our golden oldies.
Yet another twist
From Setanata Sports Website
"Chelsea are pushing ahead with an attempt to convince Carlo Ancelotti to become their next manager.
Speculation is gathering pace that the Milan boss is the man that Roman Abramovich wants to replace Avram Grant and mount another assault on The Premier League and Europe.
Sources in Italy claim Ancelotti can double his money by moving to Stamford Bridge and he will be armed with a €100 million transfer kitty with current Rossoneri star Kaka already forwarded as a possible target.
Blues legend Gianfranco Zola could even be afforded a coaching role as part of the new set-up which would send shockwaves through European football.
Milan have insisted that Ancelotti is staying at the club and denied Chelsea permission to speak with the experienced coach.
Nevertheless, Abramovich reportedly met his target at a hotel in Paris this week to discuss the vacant managerial position in West London.
Mark Hughes has also been touted as a strong contender for the post, although he has been given permission to discuss the job at Manchester City"
@144 - The Board/Roman think the shedloads of money they pay our players will keep them here - and that even more shedloads will change Milan's mind about letting us talk to Ancelotti - hence the continued pursuit of him through his reps now being reported on Sky too. Sad thing is they may well be right.....
@142 BBD
Ah yes Gene Hunt
I wanted to include Mr Hunt but there was no suitable candidate. I feel Fat Sam, while blunt and northern, lacks a certain something to be a convincing GH. We need a throwback like a Dave Bassett with a mancunian (if that is what it is) accent, or a younger Harry Redknap with a mancunian accent. There is obviously a dearth of wideboys with mancunian accents both to fill the GH role and be capable of managing our great club.
Perhaps the role of Hunt's mustachioed caveman of a sidekick would suit Sam.
Sky Sports News
"Chelsea have agreed terms with Ancelloti's advisors but haven't agreed terms with AC Milan"
"Blackburn have reached agreement with Man City for Mark Hughes"
LINK
It appears we'll be getting a CL winning coach. Hopefully he'll bring Kaka and Alexandre Pato with him.
@150 Habs - call me a pedant but doesn't "This all follows reports in the Italian media that Ancelotti met with Roman Abramovich in Paris last night at the Four Seasons George V hotel near the Eiffel Tower, where the Chelsea owner offered the Italian a four-year contract" constitute an illegal approach which could see us reported to Uefa if proved to be true?
And at the risk of upsetting TG by mentioning PTR just once more is Roman's obsession with winning CL wagging the dog. Apart from that reversal of their Liverpool horror in 06-07 hasn't Ancelotti effectively won nothing since 2003-04 and failed to refresh his squad which has aged to silly levels now?
PS - and he's the oldest looking 48 year old (according to Wikipedia) I've seen in a long time .....
I think the intentions are clear. Roman wants the Champions League above everything else. If he was looking at a longer term project, we would have gotten Sparky but he wants immediate success.
@JANG
I think we missed a huge chance to win a lot of friends if we had Sparky as our next manager. We would have been heralded as giving British managers a chance.
The problem is that no one knows how long Roman's going to be here,I hope for a very long time,so perhaps that's why he's not looking at the long term and why we're getting Ancelloti, who couldn't qualify for the Champions League with players like Kaka,Nesta,Pirlo,Seedorf,Inzaghi and wonderkid Pato.
Doesn't sound such a good idea in black and white does it?
@LYNN
I think Milan's failure to qualify for the CL doesnt have a serious baring on his managerial credentials. Afterall, he's won 2 European Cups out of 3 finals with Milan. We cannot argue with his pedigree. Milan's squad last season, despite CL success were already having alot of problems with their ageing population. But im really disappointed that we dint give Sparky a chance. He's going to waste his talents in the Eastlands. I was still wondering what he could do with a 100m warchest...
Good news or bad news?

Chelsea Statement On Manager

Contrary to reports Chelsea Football Club has not reached agreement with any individual to become manager, nor have we sought permission from any organisation to talk to their manager. We are extremely happy with how our search is progressing.

"Contrary to reports Chelsea Football Club has not reached agreement with any individual to become manager, nor have we sought permission from any organisation to talk to their manager. We are extremely happy with how our search is progressing"
I'm getting really fed up now, looks like Big Phil or Hiddink, when one or other gets knocked out of Euro2008.
Good news I think. Ancelotti seems a weird choice, and I doubt whether the club would go out of their way to deny this rumour if he was any sort of target.
They also go out of their way to make it sound like something is happening. I suspect they've managed to keep whatever they're doing off the media radar. Which is good because it means we can probably just ignore the endless speculation and desperate Sky Sports News "exclusives".
I have a funny feeling we're going to land Sparky. The fact that he's become available is the key. Forget about Citeh -- who in their right minds would take that job after how Sven's been treated? Only someone who really couldn't resist the fat paycheque, and I think Sparky has too much genuine ambition and self-respect to take that attitude. He probably reckons that there's no point waiting three years for the ManU job in case they give it to that nice man Roy Keane. If he's going to make his move to a better-funded club now, I can see him thinking we're the place to be.
The club's statement seems to rule out anyone who currently has a job. (Sparky's different since he's made it known he's available.) So other possibilities might be Sven, Lippi, or ... Laudrup?
Oh okay, I have no clue either, I'm just feeling optimistic for some reason.
AS the search progresses, the news are worse and worse...At least to me. I don't know who I hate the most: Rijkaard,Mancini or Ancelotti...
just shoot me...!
@Limetreebower
who in their right minds would take that job (City) after how Sven’s been treated
when they can join us, the home of fair treatment - lol
Item “D” of today’s Guardian’s A-Z Rumour Mill [see @128 above] seems even more appropriate now!
And it's great watching Sky Sports News trying to back track desperately as their "sources close to the deal" crumble to dust....
I dont know whether to laugh or cry. So the clowns of circus Chelsea have allowed the plot to thicken. And the desperados of Skysports news are just simply disgraceful. =\
Too fed up, sick and tired about Chelsea. I feel like screaming Chelsea SUCKS! out loud right now. Im off to bed...
Why oh why do we allow ourselves to look like utter clowns?
We let every newspaper and football media expert ridicule us at our total lack of leadership and direction. They all say that the boardroom is split on who to pick.
Even though Mark Hughes has "strong support in the boardroom"he's apparently meeting Man City for talks in London as we speak.
Are we really that conceited to think that he's ours whoever dares to make him an offer or if we have no interest in him,at least say so and let us all move on.
I think Chelsea have a duty to the fans and at the very least not to treat them with total disregard.
@LYNN
Agree with you. I think the board have failed to communicate well with the fans. Whoever those clowns are, i hope Roman stops listerning to them and make his own decision. Or at least, hear the fans.
@ Mark (161) -- touché. Not sure what I was thinking. Oh well. Prepare for the unveiling of Christian Gross as our new manager.
....BREAKING NEWS....BREAKING NEWS...Sources close to my posterior understand that Roman Abramovich and Peter Kenyon have been in negotiations with Sergei Rippemmov, former manager of Chukotka Miners' League Division 3 side Uelen Cossacks 1916 FC. We understand a deal to appoint Sergei as next manager of Chelsea is imminent - "I can show that Avram Grant where he went wrong" Sergei was heard to say by sources close to the deal.
An excited Spokesman for Footballbets'R'Us said "All the smart money is now pouring in for Rippemmov and his odds are plummeting by the minute. We reckon a few more days of this nonsense should compensate nicely for the lack of all those mug punters who would normally be betting on England to win Euro 2008 this week - oh whata giveaway!"
BBD
you're hilariously sick mate!!
but I admit you made me smile... :)

I think your analysis may be too much hoping than objective reduction. As much as i would love to see Mourinho with us once and for all, i dont see that happening very soon. this is for the mere fact that `mourinho is a very strong personality, he wont go back to something until he has been completely vindicated. see him coaching a team, perhaps even `inter, beating us 4-nil before he is really in the right frame of mind to come back. however lets hope that you are right
Chelsea needs a manager for many years to come, Chelsea cant change manager each year or second year. To make chelsea stable , there is a need for a long term manager.
Why does not anyone mention Martin Oneill. Give him the chance to create a team that will win trophy.. Chelsea need a manager for many years to come, Give Martin the chance, He is skilfull, he is rather young have many hungry years ahead of him, He has balls. Why is he not mentioned?
