Chelsea lost their unbeaten record in pre-season yesterday afternoon when they went down 2-0 to Rangers at Ibrox. Nacho Novo struck from 20 yards on 86 minutes, and Filip Sebo made sure of the win just a minute later when his shot from a similar range deflected off Ricardo Carvalho and looped over substitute goalkeeper Henrique Hilario's head and into the far corner of the net.
Shaun Wright-Phillips was Chelsea's stand out player. He came on at half time in place of Joe Cole and was a constant threat down the right flank. On current form I would pick him ahead of Cole who has struggled so far this pre-season. Steve Sidwell also shone in a four-man midfield, while Florent Malouda showed flashes of quality wide on the left. Didier Drogba and Andriy Shevchenko started up front but didn't enjoy a great deal of success against a resolute Rangers defence. Claudio Pizarro and Jon Obi Mikel replaced Malouda and Shevchenko respectively at half time, and Ashley Cole made his first appearance since the FA Cup final, coming on with half an hour remaining.
John Terry, who signed a lucrative new 5-year contract on Friday, returned after missing the Feyenoord game in midweek and played 90 minutes. Tal Ben Haim lined up alongside Terry at the heart of defence in the first half and switched to playing left and then right back during the second 45 minutes, proving what a versatile player he is. Getting Ben Haim and Sidwell on free transfers could turn out to be the best business Jose Mourinho's done as Chelsea manager. Pizarro, who also joined on a free this summer, hasn't had enough time to make a big impression, but he certainly looked sharp when he came on in the second half.
There was no sign of Arjen Robben. He has now missed three pre-season games in a row. With Real Madrid maintaining that they will sign him in the coming week, perhaps he has played his last game for Chelsea. Assistant manager Steve Clarke insisted after the game in Holland that Robben is injured, but I'm starting to believe there is something in the Real rumours. And while I think his departure would be a big loss, if he is set on a move to the Bernabeu, the rumoured £20m (€30m) transfer fee is more than fair for a player with his sparkling injury record. Malouda is a worthy replacement.
A large chunk of the £20m Chelsea get for Robben will be deposited in the bank account of UEFA Cup holders Seville in exchange for their Brazilian right-back Daniel Alves, according to some newspapers. Alves has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge all summer. Current right-backs Glen Johnson and Paulo Ferreira are more than capable on their day, but both can be a bit hit and miss. Whether Alves is any better is open to debate. He certainly looks special going forward, but I'm not convinced he's great defensively. One thing's for sure, Alves is a far better player than Spurs' glove-wearing jessie Pascal Chimbonda, who has also been linked with Chelsea. The fee being reported beggars belief.
Chelsea's next pre-season fixture is against Brondby in Copenhagen on Tuesday evening. Kick-off 7:05pm BST.
I agree Mark,if it was the first pre-season game I wouldn't worry so much, but they've played 5 now and things seems very muddled. It's like Jose is struggling to pick his first choice team and there doesn't seem to be any fluency in the team at all.Don't forget we would have lost against Feyenoord if it wasn't for Carlo. Here's hoping for a much improved performance against Brondby.
It is going to be another tough year for Chelsea if Mourinho insists on playing Sheva. He has no place in this squad. There are no Kakas, Seedorfs and Pirlos to feed him with beautiful passes at Stamford Bridge. Its obvious that Sheva and Drogba do not like one and other and have absolutely no chemistry. What's worse is that strikers with talent (Kalou, SWP) langish on the bench. Time to admit Sheva was a failed experiment and ship him elsewhere. There is just too much talent on this team up front to give him valuable minutes.
I didnt watch it, but I've read that the performance was pretty dis-jointed. Sidwell played well apparently.
It's concerning we haven't scored many goals in pre-season, even more concerning that JT has been our top scorer so far !!! I'm sure things will improve, and it's by no means a disaster if we dont perform particularly well next Sunday, but we have to start the season well.
The first game Robben missed, I believed Clarkey that he was injured. 3 games and he's still injured ??? It is Robben, so it's not impossible. But if he's going just get rid of him, get the cash in, and look to spend it on someone who'll get the goals (Fifty's favourite target David Villa was at it again at the weekend).
And if Real are stupid enough to want Michael 'The Passenger' Ballack, then rip their hands off. But I guess that's just paper talk.
Ballack is one of the few perceptive passers we have in midfield - we really missed him at the end of last season, especially at Anfield.
Robben's departure looking inevitable but at least we're trying to screw a decent fee out of them. Our activity in the transfer market this summer could almost be described as, gulp, canny.
Not a great game for us against Rangers - but they are a good team. What's most worrying was the lack of creative and attacking play. I only say this in comparison to Arsenal vs Inter last night. I have to say that for a pre-season game, they are already linking up well and creating alot of chances.
I am sure it will come for us - i just think we need to drop Sheva and go back to our 4-3-3 formation.
Looking forward to the Charity Cup - I hope we whip ManUre up good.
Well done Mr Kenyon, yet again you have made us a laughing stock. Why wasn't Alex's arrival done more professionally. If it was a team from the lower leagues you could understand if these mistakes were made but as we're trying to achieve" worldwide branding "it just makes us a look very amatuerish.Do you think Manure or Liverpool would have made the same mistakes? It will be interesting to see if Alex's work permit gets fast-tracked like Andersons was, somehow I think we may have a bit more work to do yet.Let's hope the team perform better tonight,it would be nice to reflect on the positives rather than the negatives.
I'm glad us football fans are treated so well by our clubs (not just Chelsea, but all the money-sucking, leech-ridden 'clubs').
One season of the white kit, and it's been relaunched today, with a whole extra blue stripe from what I can tell.
What an absolute shambles.
Still, we need to be finding that reported extra £30k a week for JT's payrise from somewhere. Personally, I'd take it off Sheva and Ballache and make them earn it.
Fifty - I've all but given up buying shirts these days. I didn't bother with any of last year's. I have so many... I am tempted by the new away shirt, though. Like a moth to a flame.
Nick,
There certainly is something 'alluring' about it. I just cant believe you can get flourescent yellow shorts as well.
It'll be like a homing beacon to planes and lost pigeons.

We're not creating very much - hope it improves when it really kicks off.
