Disaster for el Rio de la Plata

Sunday, 15 July 07, 05:51 PM

Today's result was a definite shocker and is not a good sign for a team that has so much talent. They needed this win but for them it would not be this day. The Brazilians as I said before had something going for them in this cup once they got over that tough loss to Mexico, and reached the quarters. The battle against Uruguay gave Brazil a new spark they had to fight hard for that win which came with some fortune. Argentina has had an easy a path steamrolling opponents and this hurt them. Brazil after the Uruguay game seemed like a team of Destiny. Last night I was at a bar and they were playing the 1995 copa in Uruguay on gol tv (owned by el principe Enzo Francescolli). Uruguay was playing Brazil in the finals and Brazil lost in penalties. I watched that game and it was very much the same as the game this year, with Brasil the victor. Both teams battled it out to the bitter end in both games 95/07. I think that Brazil really did get a boost from playing a tough game against los Charruas. Congrats to the Brazilians they deserve it, I was rooting for Argentina but the best team won. Real quickly I want to mention some thoughts on the Uruguay v Mexico. I don't want to whine and take away from their win, But I will say that the score did not reflect the Uruguayan gameplay. Before the penalty and red card, Uruguay was winning and was controllling the match play with some good futbol. The penalty which was questionable destroyed Uruguay's chances for third, because it came with a red card. The penalty I believe was called as a way for an inept referee to make up for a more obvious foul in the area earlier, committed on mexico. The red card had no merit and the foul itself was questionable. Either way if a penalty was due so be it but red carding  doomed us to los game in hot Venezualan sun in the afternoon. Either way Congarats to Mexico, but I believe the Brazil v Uruguay game  says alot about Uruguay's play in  this tournament. They were so close to beating Brazil and played a good game against them, Argentina was not so fortunate. Argentina will recover but my hearts goes out to them defeat is a bitter pill to swallow. And for the two countries on el Rio de La Plata they both had to swallow jagged pills.
