The Philadelphia Union finally has players. Today's expansion draft has come and gone, leaving ten teams down a player and new newest club in MLS with a start, one that Peter Nowak seems very happy with. The following ten players were selected:
Goalkeeper
Brad Knighton, New England Revolution
Defenders
Shavar Thomas, Chivas USA
Dave Myrie, Chicago Fire
Jordan Harvey, Colorado Rapids
Midfielders
Andrew Jacobson, D.C. United
Shea Salinas, San Jose Earthquakes
Stefani Miglioranzi, Los Angeles Galaxy
ForwardsAlejandro Moreno, Columbus Crew
Nick Zimmerman, New York
Sebastien Le Toux, Seattle Sounders
Immediate reaction? A very good start and you can see the way Nowak and assistant John Hackworth are building the side. They've anchored a few veterans in with a group of hungry, young players who will learn from players like Thomas, Miglioranzi and Moreno and improve the talented but raw players. Zimmerman and Jacobson are both decent-looking talents that have already stood out to Nowak.
The selection of Brad Knighton is a tad puzzling when considering how many other goalies were available. Though with a rumor going around about Chris Seitz potentially making his way to Philadelphia via a trade would explain that, as Seitz and Knighton would battle for the starting position.
Overall, it's a good start and Nowak has already been in MLS and knows it better than the Philadelphia media covering his team, especially at this stage.
