There are a lot of Real's - only one Barça

What is it about this rivalry between the Blaugrana and Los Merengues? Their joint history has been anchored on culture (Catalan vs Castilian) and politics (Nationalist vs Republic). Nowadays, there may be more similarities than differences, but the old rivalry will never diminish which is just as well. Why, you ask? For the simple reason that I think Real Madrid are, well, Real Meh.

On the other hand, life without a Nemesis makes life for a Giant rather dull, so I guess one should be grateful for the simple fact that a 'Real Madrid' exists. And at some intellectual level I do. It does take two to play the game, after all. But that doesn't mean I have to like them, or that I can't wish a crushing defeat upon them with every match they play. Or that the gods of football will rain misfortune upon them and their kind for ages to come. Okay, maybe not that hardcore, but I am a supporter, so ... meh.  As in Real Meh.

Not that los merengues are much of a threat this season. In fact, they're not much of anything this time around, except with their words. Twelve points behind the league leaders--Barcelona--at the holiday break, and in 5th place in the table--behind Sevilla, Atleti and Los Che--does not make for much of a threat. Salgado aside, or even the Louganis of football, Robben, Real Meh are in no position to seriously contend for the title, or much else. Do you think Mijatovic is planning on having a trophy made for the squad? That's the only way I see them getting one this time around. Maybe they could etch a fitting title on it, something like, "Walking Wounded Award." Or WWA for short. Wah, indeed.

Yes, I'm cruel, but it's the rivalry that does this to perfectly normal people. Not that I'm perfectly normal, but at least normal enough for the masses. My wife thinks I'm normal most of the time, at least. Or so she tells me. But, the point is, it's the rivalry, the expectation of seeing your club trounce the opposition, or better yet, the Nemesis, one more time, that boils the blood and warms the soul. Besides, Life is for living--or watching others live it for you! Upon Them I rest my Trust and may they deliver sweet Victory to us all, so that we may celebrate with libations aplenty. And much hooting and howling too.

One last thing. Ray Hudson. I'm on to ya, you, you, ... madridista. May your club form a pretty guard of honor for my boys. I so look forward to it.
