Midweek Champions League Roundup

Thursday, 16 August 07, 09:15 PM

The first leg of the various third round matchups of the UEFA Champions League are in the books, and several ties seem to be already over with. Here's some ties of interest:

Toulouse 0-1 Liverpool (Liverpool leads 1-0 on Aggregate)

Liverpool had its Summer transfer score his first goal fired in anger on Wednesday. No, not Fernando Torres but Andriy Voronin! Voronin, signed from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, scored in the 43rd minute to give Liverpool the goal they needed to put a stranglehold on the tie, which will finish up at Anfield in 2 weeks. More importantly for Liverpool, Steven Gerrard took a nasty kick to the foot in the first half, and left in the 65th minute, though the extent of the injury is not known, but he is expected to play in Sunday's Premier League showdown with Chelsea.

Chance that Toulouse comes back: You actually think Toulouse will go to Anfield and beat Liverpool 2-0? I laugh at you!

Sparta Prague 0-2 Arsenal (Arsenal leads 2-0 on Aggregate)

In a tough, physical game marred by 5 yellow cards, Arsenal all but punched their ticket to the Group Phase with their 2-0 win in Prague. Goals by Cesc Fabregas and Alexander Hleb put down Sparta, who established early pressure, and attempted to bully Wenger's young gunners. By the 25th minute, Arsenal gained control of the match, but still had to weather several sharp counter attacks, each stopped by Jens Lehmann, showing none of the signs of his gaffe on Sunday against Fulham.

Chance that Sparta Prague comes back: Arsene Wenger puts out Arsenal's U-14 side, and it would still go to PKs

Spartak Moscow 1-1 Celtic (Teams tied 1-1 on Aggregate. Celtic leads on Away Goals Rule)

The biggest question going into the away leg of this tie for Celtic was how the Scottish giant would do on the artificial turf at the Olympic Stadium. Well, not to shabby, actually, as Celtic grabbed a vital away goal with Paul Hartley's strike in the 21st minute. Spartak managed to tie up the match in the 42nd minute to set up a potential thriller at Celtic Park.

Chance that Spartak Moscow comes back:Very good. This tie is rather delicately poised. Spartak needs to take an early lead to pressure Celtic into trying to tie up the aggregate score.

... and apparently OleOle ate my recaps of Valenica, Rangers, and Ajax's matches. To sum them up, Valencia smashed Elfsborg 3-0, Rangers are up 1-0 on Red Star Belgrade after a Nacho Novo goal in the 90th minute, and Ajax are in a world of trouble, falling to Slavia Prague 1-0 in Amsterdam. Curse you finicky servers!

Arsenal 2-1 Fulham

Sunday, 12 August 07, 01:18 PM

With Bielefeld 2nd in the Bundesliga and Tottenham losing to Sunderland, pretty much the only thing to make the weekend perfect would be for an Arsenal win against Fulham. After all, at the end of last season virtually the same Arsenal 11 thumped Fulham 3-1 at the Emirates. Despite the loss of Henry, all should be well. Van Persie is healthy, Fabregas is anchoring the midfield, the back four lead by Gallas, and Lehmann is solid betwe....

MY GOD JENS, HOW COULD YOU SCREW THAT UP!

Yes, that was a rather dumb move on Jens' part, and frankly, considering how we see folks screw up shots with acres of open space in front of them, a hat tip to David Healy is in order for putting that in. Regardless, being down 0-1 a minute into the match is not the thing one would envision the opening match of the season to be. However, the Arsenal got up and going after that, and began to pressure Fulham like expected, and deflected the few Fulham chances after that as expected. However, it wasn't until the controversial penalty that got Arsenal on the board in the 84th minute, and in typical Arsenal-at-the-Emirates fashion, sealed the deal in injury time by a goal from Alexander Hleb.

As far as I'm concerned, I was rather pleased with the performance, despite the Lehmann gaffe. As far as subsitutions were concerned, Walcott was serviceable as a subsitution for Eboue, but Niklas Bendtner continues to impress, as the timbre of the game changed significantly when he came on for Rosicky. Whether that can be attributed to Wenger changing the formation to a 4-4-2 can be argued, the Great Dane (Is calling him Scooby-Doo out of order?) rumbled about creating chances his entire time on the pitch. What's holding him back for really being a legitimate threat is his finishing skills. This was pretty obvious during the Emirates Cup, and was on display today, where he missed at least two legitimate chances. But it seems to be that problems like that can only be solved on the pitch, which seems to be a great place for him Scooby Doo to be.

Pass the Scooby Snacks, Shaggy, le Championat is on.
