America is officially the worst team in the Primera Division. But does it really come as a surprise? All the years of terrible player acquisitions, bad coaching, and awful planning have transformed one of the most popular teams in Mexico to a pitiful spectacle for their fans.
What if the Azteca League had a relegation system that sends the worst placed team to the second division instead of a stupid point average system that even confuses the league's directors? America would be right now in the second division, one of the biggest and most important clubs in North and South America would be in a humiliating position.
Ruben Omar Romano finally quit after losing 2-4 against Brazilian side Flamengo who humiliated them in the mythical Estadio Azteca de Santa Ursula, one game before ending the regular season.
But we cannot hold Romano responsible for America's failure; he just made a wrong decision to take a decadent team that was headed to soccer hell.
He got caught up in a terrible storm that has not ended. Let's not forget
that Grupo Televisa does not know how to manage a football club, and that Emilio Azcarraga should concentrate on his telenovelas instead of interfering in the world of soccer. Look what
happened with Hugo Sanchez and El Tricolor; Grupo Televisa put him as the national coach, and "Ego" Sanchez was not able to qualify the best generation of Mexican football players to the
Beijing Olympic Games. Grupo Televisa decided on Sanchez for the marketing success that he could have, and let's not forget that he did really well in that aspect, but his poor performances as
the national coach scared the whole country, from Tijuana to Yucatan. America has to stop caring about buying overpriced foreigners (which do not work) that could attract more fans to the
stadium, and start caring about the professional and administrative aspect of football. That is the only way that America is going to regain its credibility among its supporters and the rest of
the world....
