Txiki Surprised By Effective Barça

Monday, 27 October 08, 05:56 PM · Comments(1)

Barcelona were rampant yet again on Saturday night as they destroyed Almería 5-0 in the Camp Nou and with the season now fully in swing their poor beginning seems to have been forgotten.

An opening day loss to Numancia was the worst possible start for Pep Guardiola as new manager and was the shock result of the first week. However, Director of Football at Barcelona, Txiki Begiristain, has today said that his sides impressive form as of late has suprised him just as much as the bad start.

"In the same way that we failed to score in the early games now the effectiveness of the side is unusual," he said, "It could have been predicted because the side is very good but we must not forget that although it is a very good start, it is only the start."

Indeed, Barcelona might have won their last nine matches but they are not top of La Liga at the moment as Valencia set the pace ahead of them. Both sides have scored plenty of goals, with David Villa the main man for Los Che, and Samuel Eto'o finding the net for Barcelona again. Speaking about the Cameroonian striker Begiristain says that he is not surprisd by his form because of the way he has performed in the past.

"One must not forget that when we won the two leagues (with Frank Rijkaard as coach) Eto'o was fundamental. Even though during the last two years there have been circumstances such as his injuries or participation in the African Nations he is a player with a winning mentality," declared the Spaniard.
