€50 Million For David Villa?

Tuesday, 14 July 09, 02:50 PM · Comments (26)

David Villa

My God! Isn't this summer dragging on. With the lack of comings and goings at Camp Nou, the local press are forced to write something to fill their pages and unfortunately it seems they will run any story if it will help to sell a few more papers. This situation makes it very difficult to know what to believe, however, it does  seem quite likely that Barça would like to sign David Villa from Valencia.

Reports of yesterday's meeting between Valencia's president Manuel Llorente and Villa and his agent suggest that we may be in for a long wait. Valencia supposedly will not accept less than fifty million euros for Villa while Barça are supposed to be willing to pay around €40 million. However, today Llorente was quoted as saying that Barça have not made an official offer. at this stage I don't know what to believe.

The fact that the breach between the club and Samuel Eto'o seems to be growing every day makes the need to buy a top quality striker all the more urgent. For me, trying to attach blame for the situation with Eto'o is pointless. It would be nice if the situation could sort itself out as it did last summer, but I have a feeling that if Eto'o stays now there will be problems during the season.

It is interesting to follow the latest Fcbnews poll. As things stand at the moment the majority would favour Villa to be our centre forward this season. Whether he is a better player or not I'm not sure but hopefully with Villa the dressing room harmony would be maintained.

Unfortunately, thanks to Florentino Perez the transfer market seems to be more complicated than ever this summer. Of course clubs are going to think if Cristiano Ronaldo is worth so much then whatever player they might be considering selling will have a few million added to his value. So, should Barça pay the €50 million for Villa or should we start considering other options such as Diego Forlan. With the beginning of the preseason coming up next week is it time for Barça to act or should we continue to play it "cool" with the hope that eventually the selling club will bring down the price? As far as I'm concerned as a blogger, I just wish that something would happen soon so I could have something to write about!

I completely agree. This reminds me of when we won the champs league in 2006. We didn't think there was an imediate urge to sign anyone new.

Let's put it this way. We spent 35 Million Euros for Dani Alves. We have the money no matter what Barca keep saying. Get this transfer done.

The one thing I'm scared of is that we will have to sell Eto'o for a lot less after we get Villa.

Ideal situation...Sell Eto'o to anybody who wants him for atleast 30 million atleast!! Then buy Villa and Bruno Alves... And have we bought Keirison yet? Holy S*it, we need to step our game up....and why do we still have Hleb?

Only Man City would pay 30 million for Eto'o and even thats pretty much out of the picture if they sign Adebayor from Arsenal.

Villa would be a great signing, because it would first of all piss me off, and because he is a more complete player than Eto'o. He is more like whan Henry was in his Arsenal's days and I think 50 million euros is a fair price for a man of his talent.

I still cant believe we picked Benzema over Villa.

It's going to be interesting but I don't think Eto'o will end up leaving in the end and ultimately Barca will get nothing for him. The only club I can see that might take him are Man U. or even AC Milan if they don't land Fabiano. You would think there would be offers up the wazoo for him.

I also don't see Villa coming as much as I would love to see him at Barca.

Oh and then there's the Puyol story. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Man U have said they wont be making any more signings in the summer and AC Milan cannot afford the money Barca are looking at, despite the fact that they have the money from Kaka's move to us.

I don't understand the whole Eto'o story. There has to be something behind the fact that no clubs are willing to pay 30 mill for him this season or last season. Managers of the big European teams must see something that the lay person is'nt seeing. Everybody knows that he is a world class striker and his scoring record is unbelievable and at 30 mill he is a bargain!! If there was another striker with his stats at another team in Europe there would be dozens of clubs knocking on the door to pay up to 50 million euros for him.

50 million euros for David Villa??? I think he is a great striker and I would nearly put him on a par with Eto'o but I can't see where the 20 million euros of difference comes between them.

I don't understand why Eto'o is happy to stay for one more year and walk out for free when he is one year older. The only reason I can see him doing this is to stick it to the Barcelona board and give them the middle finger when he is leaving and not let them get any money for him. This type of atitude is very selfish but I think both parties are at fault here so it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

The idea that he leaves at the end of his contract and is able to negotiate a massive pay deal with a new club because they won't have to pay to buy him makes me SICK!! Its not just him any players who do it really annoy me. When these guys starting playing soccer when they were kids they did it for the love of the sport and money did'nt come into the equation. Why do they turn to greed? All top players make at least 100K a week, this is more money than anyone could dream of and its more money than anyone could spend in a week. I don't understand why someone would want to leave a club challenging for top prizes and go to someone like Man City and probably challenge for nothing and earn 200K a week!! People in the world would cry out for a fraction of this money but it seems players seem to forget about their sporting ambition and get greedy.

David Villa Goals, Assists:
2005-06: 29, 6
2006-07: 21, 15
2007-08: 22, 6
2008-09: 32, 8

Samuel Eto'o Goals, Assists:
2005-06: 34, 9
2006-07: 13, 3
2007-08: 18, 3
2008-09: 36, 6

I think what the stats show is that Villa is a more complete player who will score and create goals.

@ losblancos-dxb ,

" He is more like (when) Henry was in his Arsenal's days and I think 50 million euros is a fair price for a man of his talent. "

I agree with you that Villa is (technically) a better player than Eto'o . However I don't see many similarities between him and Henry .

Henry is a different player from either Eto'o or Villa . While he is a productive player and has a nose for the goal BUT he is not as good technically when compared with Eto'o let alone with Villa .

IMO , Villa is by far better technically and less selfish than either Eto'o or Henry .

Barça will have to do something regarding signing new players and moving some players out .

I'm sure you are very excited about " your " club's new signings, ie ; Kaka , Ronaldo and Benzema .

I think you actually post here just to " rub " it in but I have news for you .

Here is a reality check : despite all the hype and the huge amounts of money spent to get the signatures of Kaka , Ronaldo and Benzema NONE of them would make the starting lineup at Barça .

When you try to think about it objectively , it is almost mind boggling !!

Every body should just be quiet and wait for the verdict i.e not the 09/10 team photo ,but the first game of the season. All this Eto'o and Villa comparison is not right. How can Villa be worth more than Eto'o in the market? His titles can not compare to Eto'o's? Let's be honest.

To losblancos_dxb, it appears you don't know how to analyse statistics. I don't want to hurt you but did you notice that the two seasons in which Eto'o were injured 2006-07 and 2007-08, Barcelona won nothing? Have you forgotten. The key piece in the attack line was missing and what could R10, Xavi, Deco and Messi do. Nothing. when Eto'o in in fine form, the whole team feels his spirit and motivational presence. So all the Eto'o haters should better watch out. When the key player or control center leaves a team, there is subsequent instability. makelele left real madrid and there is no one to remind the fans,; flamini and henry left arsenal; no one has been able to keep up; when steven gerard does not play, liverpool is so confused. wait and see the down fall of Lyon as juninho and Benzema are gone. So losblancos_dxb, think like a coach, fan, sports analyst and team player at the same time to make a convincing point.

ETO'O STAYS IN BARCELONA. end of discussion.

First of all, I am pretty sure Kaka and Ronaldo would make any starting lineup in the world. Second, I am not trying to rub it in, as I clearly said that I'd prefer Villa in our side rather than Benzema. Infact the only reason why we went for Benz is because Valencia changed their stance on Villa. But now if Barca end up getting him, I'll surely be disappointed. And my stats were just to prove how Villa offers more to a side than Eto'o. If you are happy with Eto'o then fine, but I'll have Villa over him any day.

Let me get this straight : you actually prefer Kaka over Iniesta and Ronaldo over Messi ?

I'm very sure many Madridistas will disagree with you on this !!

OMG there are so many new news about Villa, every day something "different" but it's similar, cause we don't know what will be with that
Atletico Madrid's manager said that they will not sell Forlan,on Laporta's:I like Forlan,he said I like Messi
and today I'm read that Eto'o will be at Camp Nou,and that he will start the preseason with Barça
at the end I'm 8O

Kaka over Iniesta yes, and Messi over Ronaldo. But you could have them both playing on both flanks.

Give me Messi , Iniesta , Xavi , Toure , Eto'o and Alves over Ronaldo , Kaka , Gago , Diarra , Benzema and Ramos any day of the week .

Other than Casillas and Robben I don't see any of the Real Madrid players making the starting line up at Barça !!

I am not saying the others are bad, but I think Messi and Xavi and Iniesta make the difference. But between Iniesta and CR9, I would prefer having the latter, especially considering his form for the past two seasons.

I see that the Eto'o thing was just press crap. He is not going and offers have not been accepted. So it's all crap in my opinion.
If villa is 50 million, then i would say go for Ribery. Villa is not worth 50 million (what would Eto'o worth then, 60 million???), maybe 30-40, but not 50.

@ Maria Ines ,

I wish you were right but I think Eto'o only wants to finish his current contract and has no intention of signing an extension .

Eto'o is a good productive player but let's face it he can also be selfish , greedy and disruptive .

He is only driven by money and has no concern for the damage he is doing to the club .

He could have been a class act and accept that the club wants to strengthen and add new players .
He could have accepted a transfer but he wants all the money for himself and his agent and none for Barça .

His plan is to return for one more year just to spite the club but I doubt if the club would let him get away with it .

They could just sign another CF and let Eto'o sit on the bench or send him to the B side .

If Eto'o tries to play hard ball the club will probably do the same .

One final remark to all Eto'o fans:
I am NOT trying to belittle Eto'o as a player . He did a lot for the club but it is hard to justify his selfishness , greed and disruptive behaviour !!

I am almost certain that Villa are going to be a Barca player. because.. I cant see that he could play with Valencia, are going to miss CL and have had real Money problems.
and ithink that Villa could put 25-30 at least his first season on Camp nou. and tecknily Villa are way better than Eto, but Eto is of ofcourse
Brilliant player and a living legend on Camp nou!

Enough with all this talk :P Ibra seems to be the one coming to Barca instead of Villa.

I think the Eto situation has gone beyond the point of no return and he is not going to stay now for a fact unless we do not get anyone that wants to buy him.

Ibra is very technical as well and a fantastic player but will lack the speed and bite that both Villa & Eto have.

Kaka & Ronaldo would walk into any team and yes that is including Barcas! Although I would never choose Ronaldo over Messi but I mean that room will be made and positions switched around.

I agree with losblancos....Kaka is better than Iniesta & Messi better than Ronaldo. In the end, we are comparable now and will both be feared all around the world :D

p.s. I am actually looking forward to watching Madrid play for a change next year!

Villa is a good striker and will settle well within the team as he has the desire and hunger to win trophies, and this will drive the team on,If he can score 28 goals with Valencia he can score more for Barca.

50 million is a big amount and we should try lower it but adding clauses and playeers in part exchange.

Any news about Kerrison

It's rather unfortunate that people talk the way they're talking about Eto. It's trully disheartening. I strongly believe that it's easy to demonise that which we do not know but Eto we know very well. What is actually the matter? Is that the best way to pay back. Do we reprimand hardwork. It's a sad and pathetic situation.Y can not equate two irrationalities. How dare Eto is been measure up with the likes of villa, abrahammmm, etc? Is it not said that a player just like a coach is as good as his last works? Where then do you gays fit in all those names been compare with Eto? It's bad. Goodluck and may God in His infinite mercy lavish His incessant blessings on Eto and his family in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
