I am an English bloke who moved to Barcelona in 1989, it didn't take me long to fall in love with Barça. I've followed them ever since, even through the horrific Gaspart years. Their triumphs and failures over the years have caused me great suffering and tremendous joy. It seems a logical step now for me to write about them.

FC Barcelona Blog is not just for me to spout off my opinions. I want to hear your views too, so send your comments.

Many thanks to Ahmed Bilal of SoccerLens.com and to Nick Lloyd who runs the excellent http://www.iberianature.com/spainblog/ for their help, advice and encouragement.

hi nick,
i have heard from several sources that barcelona(during the time that cruyff was in charge) used to play with 5 defenders in bernabau..
do u know if this is true? cos if it is, would be kindaa disappointing..

Hi Stavrogen,
Cruyff was pretty unique in modern football for usually playing with a three-man defence in a 3-4-3 formation but he didn't stick with it always. for example when Barça beat Sampdoria 1-0 to win the European Cup in 1992 he played a four-man defence of Ferrer, Koeman, Nando, Juan Carlos, and he often played four at the back in big games away from home such as those at Real Madrid; however, I don't recall him ever playing five at the back.
