A goal just after the hour from Samuel Eto'o gave Barça a fifth league win on the trot which sees us move back above Real Madrid into fourth place. For the first time since mid-August in the Champions League we kept a clean sheet, and Victor Valdes and the defence gave a solid performance supported well by a midfield which included Victor Sanchez in the starting lineup and Sergio Busquets who came on after half an hour for the injured Seydou Keita.
With Xavi injured, Puyol and Leo Messi were both rested which meant an interesting line up with Andres Iniesta starting on the right, though he did switch to the left for most of the second half where he was far more effective. Eto'o and Thierry Henry played as the other attackers, and while they have often failed to combine well in attack, today it worked as Henry set up Eto'o for the game's only goal.
There was a lively start to the match with Valdés being forced into an early save, diving to the right to tip away Yeste's free kick. Then on eight minutes Eto'o turned inside his defender before seeing his shot saved by Gorka. The next decent effort for Barça came in the 21st minute when Iniesta who hadn't done much until then, cut in from the right before shooting over left footed. A minute later Keita gave away a free kick and Yeste once more tested Valdés who this time made a fantastic save left handed diving to his right.
After 29 minutes Keita seemed to twist his knee and Sergio Busquets came on in his place. On 35 minutes Eto'o wasted another good chance when his touch allowed the ball to run on too far in front of him and his shot was blocked. Athletic then had a good chance but Abidal did enough to force Garmendia to shoot over. Then just before half time Barça came close with their first corner of the game when Eto'o nearly headed past Gorka.
The teams were evenly balanced in the first half but in the second half Barça took more control of the game. in the 48th minute Alves sent Iniesta to the by-line and his pull back was fired overby Victor Sanchez. After 52 muntes Toure Yaya had a goal bound effort blocked , but at the other end he suffered a worrying moment when Marquez headed the ball into his face and Barça were lucky to be able to clear the rebound; four minutes later Barça took the lead.
Thierry Henry received the ball on the right and set off on a run infield, dribbled past one player before sending the ball into Samuel Eto'o who got in front of the defender before smashing a left foot shot past Gorka. Puyol came on for the injured Marquez and the defence held pretty firm until the end. Barça came close to a second when an Iniesta cross from the left was almost headed into his own goal by a defender, and then Eto'o missed a golden chance from 15 yards out, shooting wide with only the keeper to beat.
Then Athletic had a chance in the 83rd minute with a goalbound header that hit another of their attackers, though the ref awarded a foul in attack afterwards. Last season we threw away a 0-1 lead with just ten minutes to go but this season we held firm and take three deserved points. While it wasn't the prettiest game it was the type of away game that champions win; it was great to see the young midfield partnership of Victor Sanchez and Sergio Busquets giving it everything, the spirit seems to run through the whole team now; best of all was the clean sheet after so long, Valdés made two very good saves to keep us in it in the first half whie Eric Abidal gave another good performance at left back and Gerard Piqué also deserves a mention, the way he is playing he looks to be by far the best value-for-money signing of the summer. And well done again to Pep for keeping Eto'o and Henry on the pitch when I had been calling for Messi to come on for one of them for at least ten minutes when they combined for the goal.
Barça: Valdés 7; Alves 6, Marquez 6.5 (Puyol m65, 7), Piqué 7, Abidal 7.5; Victor Sanchez 7, Toure 7, Keita 6 (Busquets m32, 7); Iniesta 7.5, Eto'o 6.5, Henry 6.5 (Hleb m80, 6).
Goal: m63 Eto'o 0-1.
Barça yellows: m50 Marquez, m89 Busquets, m90 Eto'o
definetely not the prettiest win but a very solid one in a tough venue, right after a disruptive international break, the result is very welcomed.
but its only in ones nature to comment, so here goes.
i am getting quite sick of guardiola's constant reshuffling and rotations. how is the team suppose to click and find a rhythm if every week they are paired up with different playres? its getting to the time where experiments need to slow down and he needs to choose. he said he will settle on his best 11, i hope sooner than later.
because rotations DO NOT work at winning teams. fact. no big winning team (or at least competative team) uses a major rotation policy. only one tries, liverpool, and well besdies a CL win, Benitez's league record is incredibly poor. im getting a bit tired of tuning in and never knowing who is gonna play in the midfield and then have victor sanchez playing out of nowhere. i love giving the kids a chance, but it could be getting a bit too much.
and well i have to say it, i just do. besides the moment of brilliance from thierry to set up the goal, well he was giving a new definition to the phrase "poor performance". even the sky guys were saying it and they are english. the key word before was "moment". thats all he gave. he just makes me sad and angry. and often ppl say, "what about etoo miss, that was bad, why isnt he criticized". well its becaue he works his socks off every game, scores goals, has chances, and when he missed u could see how annoyed he was. because he is our colors through and through.
lastly, alves was abysmal. his passing makes me want to vomit. it was so unbelievable bad. he really needs to pick it up.
finally, VV deserves much credit. he had a perfect game. great saves, smart, reliable play. pique was also fabulous (perfect besides that one near mistake), i am very happy with him. abidal too had another solid game, which makes me probably the happiest of anything. lol
Barça: Valdés 8
Alves 6
Marquez 7
(Puyol m65, 7)
Piqué 7
Abidal 8
Victor Sanchez 4
Toure 6.5
Keita 5.5 (Busquets m32, 7)
Iniesta 7
Eto'o 6
Henry 7 (Hleb m80, 6)
busquets is good but still learning pique was solid iniesta wasnt that bad on the right overall gud gud gud my MOTM:pique hardly put a foot wrong
it was kind of an odd match but given the international break and injuries, we should celebrate the victory but i hope we will be able to win more convincible and yaya dosent leave
Happy with the result today...where are the Valdes knockers now???!!!
Regarding the rotations - please - they are fine. It puts players on notice that the squad has depth for positions, it also creates competition & shows that Guardiola isn't playing any favourites.
Rotations can only HELP the squad - it's a long season, the more rest we put in the legs of our key players - the better it will be for us. I see Nothing wrong with what we are doing - Guardiola for my money is standing on his own convictions and doing a bang up job. Also, not to mention, the youth now see that if they play well, they get rewarded with an opportuinty to play first team football....this alone is gold, as great talents (Like Gai) wont be so tempted to leave for first team football.
@Blaugranaboy
First, If you are getting sick of the reshuffling with the line up then just imagine what the opposing coaches and players must feel. The whole idea is that he is building a team and this is exactly what it takes. I mentioned in an earlier post that we are slated to play 60+ matches this year and if we are to continue doing well, every single player must participate. When I turned on the TV to watch the game, I was filled with glee to see the line up because I have been curious to truly assess our depth (...not to mention, I was appreciating Pep's "culot" or guts). If we matched Bilbao (which is not a bad team at all) without Messi, Xavi, Puyol and Busquets (at least for part of the game)...well I feel good about that and those who contributed today must be feeling good about themselves.Always, remember that this Barcelona team we have today is still forming. We haven't even explored all options with Hleb, Busquets,Keita,Sergio,Caceres,Bojan, and Henry is still marginal within our system of play. Pep HAS to keep shaking the tree until all the rotten apples fall off then settle on a regular line up which will gives us all the joy of watching the BEAUTIFUL GAME we love so much. So,I ask for patience.
Second, As much criticism as I have given to Valdes, I have to admit that he had a "GREAT" game today and his saves were truly nice. That having been said, I think that he can communicate better with his defense and be a bit more assertive (especially with Abidal).
Salam & Forca Barca!!!
PS:
Nic, any news any news on the contract renewal for Eto'o? and thanks for the Iniesta link, that goal for Spain was a masterpiece!!!
@Blaugrana-namibia
BTW, Eto'o won us the game today!!! I just thought I would mention it to you.I hope you're well!
Valdes really shut me up today! His two saves are the reason we came out with three points. Wutz up with Alves???? He is not half the player he was at Sevilla. On Pep's reshuffling I think its a good thing. Barca has a lot of quality players that could be starters in any other team. By allowing everyone to play Pep is building up all of the player's confidence. I believe that when Barca plays crucial games down the line, Pep will have a good idea of what his best starting 11 is. On another subject, did anyone see Madrid's game? They got totally out played by Atletico in the 2nd half. If not for Hetinga's terrible foul that led to the game winning PK Madrid would have come out with a draw against a team Barca destroyed.
yesss, I got the prediction right
It was a pretty tough game and i'm glad we got the 3 points. Eto'o's goal was good and had a lot of power...
Pique was solid, and i'm glad we got him for a bargain price. Valdes impressed me a lot his 2 saves were brilliant and a clean sheet can only help him and the team.
Touré had a decent game, and its good to see him getting playing time. Sanchez was decent as well and it seems like he can play in various positions, which can help us later on in the season and with injuries.
look...whatever is going on right now...what ever pep is doing...its working. we're winning games...not just by big results but also by grinding out wins...which is what the best teams do.
yes, we are still forming...and will only get better...but the most important thing this year is the passion and desire that was missing before!
lets hope it continues
I must say im very happy about the win but i have to agree with blaugranaboy.. when it comes to the business end of the season where we will hopefully be in contention for the champions league and la liga we will need not only a well settled team but a well oiled machine which is capable of destroying teams one way or the other. Thats why i think come november Pep should start playing a fixed 11 with maybe one or two changes every few games.
This was our first clean sheet of the season and i think that was partly because we dont really have a steady defensive pairing. Where will the understanding come from if there's no fixed pair in defense??
Yes the rotation policy keeps players on their toes but a place in the starting 11 is not the only thing that keeps world class players like ours motivated, its winning trpohies as well and for that itself they'll give it their best. And if he must rotate he could have waited 3 days and done it in the CL where we are in a comfortable position.
Also the bojan situation is worrying. I can understand Pep wanting to play youngsters like Sanchez but if he had to experiment why not start with bojan up front and iniesta in midfield which i think would have made it a more creative lineup.
Special mention for VV though.. Im happy for him. This performance should give him some much needed confidence.
i said i was getting sick, im not sick of it just yet. also, i never said a bit (stress bit) of rotation is wrong or that i dont understand it and sure he is giving players chances, i just think its getting about time for him to settle into his best 11 (as he said he would do about 2 weeks ago). he definetely needs to by december/jan. we cant always be in the "forming stage", he needs to find his team and let them find an understanding and familitarity with each other. by the time we hit that crazy sevilla, valencia, real madrid, villarreal lineup he needs to have a core 11 ready and in sync with each other.
also, im sorry but people are exaggerating the physical tole of the game. u didnt see lampard tired when he played 160 consecutive league games for Chelsea (and England inbetween), it was actually when he was playing his best football. fine, messi was probably jet lagged but otherwise these players arent little amatuers, its their profession to be fit. and the season is far too early to even consider fatigue.
barca were at their best with rijkaard when u KNEW the staring 11. players dont ONLY need to be tried and tested in games, that can happen just as well in practice.
i mean ive watched and i could quite easily figure out my best 11.
at the same time it makes very little sense to argue when u win, and keep winning. all this comes down to one fundamental point, a rotation policy at major clubs is a proven FAILURE, ur best core squad players should play the VAST majority of the games.
I agree with most posters that a win is a win. We should take it any way it comes. Madrid scraped their way to winning titles by barely getting by and finding ways to score however ugly or controversially (ie;friendly referees) !!
I'm not sure about the rotation policy though. It did not work for Arsenal or Liverpool in the EPL for example. Barça can NOT expect to win titles by leaving Messi , Xavi, Eto ó or Iniesta on the bench. These players are the core of the club and , if healthy, they should be included in the lineup. Without them, Barça is just another club !!
u all should read ditto's post above mine too, lots of good and true points.
Wait until the second half of the season to worry about the rotation. For now Guardiola is making sure that everyone in the team is fighting for their spot and that players like Messi and Xavi haven't run their legs off when important matches in March, April, and May come around. Remember the work load Xavi managed last season, plus in the Euro, the man has logged unbelievable minutes.
The spell where we face Sevilla, Villareal valencia and madrid is as important as it gets and we need a team that can pick up 12 points from those games. That is only possible if we have a fixed 11 who have telepathic understanding. Pep should look at settling on the team for those matches and maybe continuing with the rotations after that because it is of paramount importance that we beat the title contenders seeing as head to head is extremely important in Spain.
blaugranaboy, I understand your stance and I too get sometimes frustrated by Pep's rotation but for the moment is is breeding championship winning form. Players like Victor Zanchez are for me not ready at all and Busquets cannot replace Toure so I would like to see the wonderkids on the bench a bit more to be honest.
However, it has turned Xavi and more notably Iniesta from continetnal to truely world-class players. Eto is running more now then ever, Henry statistically at least is contributing alot, we have someone as quality as Torue in reserve and dare I say it Abidal after being dropped has been performing very well.
I cant stress enough it was very important for Henry and Eto to link up and score, and more importantly it was imperitive for the mental health of Barca to win without Messi. For now, lets just be happy with the lucky dogs from Madrid. Hopefully we'll keep pace and give them an ass whooping come El-Classico!!
cool titi, glad to see ur also a bit on board about these rotatoins. i totally agree, sanchez to me didnt look much (but to be fair it was a debut in a tough game). but with special players u just know, as soon as xavi, messi, iniesta hit the field I was like WOW. even busquets his first game u can see he has that little extra u cant teach. sanchez looks to be about the class of sergio garcia.
u may dare say it, pep dropping has really REALLY helped abidal, which is fantastic. i dont know how much it affected iniesta. i reckon he is playing as well as ever people are just recognizing him more, he is also more confident as a person and player probably and the Euro win has to help. xavi i totally disagree. he has been worldclass ever since he stepped onto that pitch. ive been arguing with friends for yrs and yrs that he is the best center midfielder in teh world, now that Spain wins he is getting more people watching and his very long overdue credit. besides maybe a less good season 2 yrs ago (where he was really forced to play more defensively) he has been spectacular consistently. he is easily my favorite player of this team.
henry, uuh, lets leave him be today. he was bad against bilbao, u wrote it, i wrote it, we both know it. stats are misleading.
Blaugrana,
you are wrong about this desire of yours to pick 11 at this stage. It is almost a non-issue and borders nonsense at this stage in the season. You argument that rotating teams do not win championships is wrong, dead wrong. Man U. did last year to certain extend and, although there was a solid backbone of 8 consistent starters, Sir alex did a fine job rotating Te Vez, Giggs, Anderson, Gary Neville, etc..etc..Now are you going to tell me that none of these players is a starter? It is nonsensical to push this line of reasoning without anything solid to back it up. I can go back history and pull a number of teams who have done well rotating and I am sure that you can go back and pull many who have not.So, what's the issue? Well, there's no issue since both philosophies can work. Then it becomes irrelevant what the coach is doing. What is important is for a coach to understand his opposition on any given day and put up a line up that can compete well. That is exactely what Pep's been doing. Do you know what happens when players are not given a real chance to prove themselves before a starting 11 is picked? discontent and lockerroom banter...that's what happens!
I will share an experience that I personally had when I played for the senegal national team in 2004. We lost in the quarterfinals at the African Cup of Nations because of that very fact. The coach had decided to play the same 11, even though some of us weren't having a great tournament. It is all based on this flawed familiarity argument.
We need to avoid second guessing the coach but spend more time observing player reaction. It is obvious that Barcelona players are all reacting very well to his vision.
We will leave Henry then blaugrana but as long as he comes up with moments of brilliance which win or help win football matches Pep aint going to let him go lol so it looks like we're stuck with him!!
Reagrding Xavi, although he was playing well it was like you pointed out, he was asked to be more defensive before whereas now we have two out and out DM's in Toure and Keita so he has more initiative to go forward. Much like Cesc last season, when he knew he had Flamini behind him he had the mental freedom to do as he pleases, without him, this season he has been average although we know he can be world-class. This is what happened with Xavi.
Long may it continue and for me, as I personally love iniesta from the day I saw him many years ago, he has become a better player - more confident, faster, stronger, and he's only 26 !!
Imagaine in a few years when Xavi retires lol a midfeild of Toure-Cesc--Iniesta with Bojan/Eto and Benzema/Ageuro (who either will end up in Barca trust me). THAT will be a team
Titi 186:
That will be some line up. Don't forget to include Messi there. BTW., Iniesta is only 24. Goalkeeper and leftback are still positions of concern !!

Its good that people (well Nic anyway) is appreciating that a good performance isnt always the prettiest one. Its something not all Spanish teams and their fans especially dont appreciate enough. Barca were compact at the back, solid in midfeild and just did enough in attack.
Henry annoyingly only seemed like he came to life for 10mins from 60-70mins and he dribbled past two players and set-up Eto beautifully, still a good contribution nevertheless. If Henry-Eto is ever going to work, they need games.
Valdes did very well today especially from free-kicks saving very well however this defense worries me as the communication was lacking and as Nic pointed out Athletico's best chance came from a corner and although I dont personally think it was goal-bound, luckily Bilboa's own player deflected it over.
Pep's only mistake in my opinion was wasting Iniesta for much of the game wide-right as when he came more central he was brilliant dictating the game and gliding past players like nothing. Personally, if playing Henry and Eto who thrive off service, Iniesta or Messi (in the absence of Xavi) need to be just behind them which has worked before.
In attack Eto can still be frustrating. 4 chances today, 3 of the golden and he scored 1 - his finish was great though. Whilst we didnt pay for it today, perhaps another day we would, but today we survive
More importantly it was very phycologicaly important for Barca to win without Messi and Id rather win this way then draw the pretty way
yea this was a great win...we cant expect to beat every team 3-0 or 4-0. and this win came right after an international break which is good.
