It couldn't go on for ever. Barça's winning streak came to an end this evening as we could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Getafe. It might have been worse as Getafe led through a 19th minute goal from Manu del Moral and were close to a second just before Seydou Keita equalised for Barça twenty minutes from the end. Many will remember the absence of Leo Messi but it does not explain the below-par performance of many of the other players, Bojan starting his first league match of the season was particularly disappointing filling in for Messi on the right, he looked terribly upset after he was substituted and I have to say I am worried about whether he is over affected by the pressure of playing at the top level. Alexandr Hleb and Seydou Keita who also both started offered very little until Keita saved himself with the goal.
Barça were imprecise in the passing today and we also suffered in the one-against-one situations, only when Henry and Pedro came on in the second half did we manage to look a bit more dangerous on the wings. Xavi also did not have one of his best games and his attempts to find Samuel Eto'o were nearly all fruitless. Toure Yaya did his usual good job of recuperating possession but his passing was not up to scratch.
Getafe matched Barça from the beginning playing some good possession football early on and also looking dangerous on the break. After 18 minutes Piqué gave the ball away and Manu del Moral led a counter attack for the visitors, Manu tried a pass which came back to him off Piqué and he fired a perfectly placed shot into the far corner which Valdés was a little late to react to. Barça almost hit back immediately but Bojan's volley was deflected for a corner.
It is on days like today that you need a little luck to win but the gods were not with us today as both Eto'o and Gerard Piqué had efforts hit the crossbar, but at the other end Victor Valdés was fortunate to see the ball go just wide after Albin's shot squirmed through his hands. From a possible 0-2 Barça went up the other end and equalized: Xavi opened the play to Dani Alves on the right and the Brazilian sent in a beautiful cross for Keita to head home from close range.
For ten minutes Barça applied the pressure but the winning goal wouldn't come, after Abbondanzieri tipped Piqué's header onto the bar in the 80th minute the level dropped once again for the last ten minutes. Getafe might have grabbed a winner in the 90th minute but nobody could reach Cortes's cross.
Perhaps we shouldn't be too disappointed with the point especially as we still maintain a three point lead at the top of the table. Of course this was a game that we expected to win but we were bound to have an off day sooner or later. Getafe did their job well defending in numbers and counter attacking dangerously. We'll have to hope that next week we get it together for the games with Sporting Lisbon and Sevilla as it is no good being brilliant at the start of the season if we can't keep it going when the big games arrive. Another worry is that Eto'o received his 4th yellow card of the season for protesting a decision and one more will mean he misses a match through suspension. Hopefully Messi will be back next week as he can definitely make a difference in tight games, however, I somehow feel that even if he had played today we still wouldn't have won.
Barça: Valdés 5.5; Alves 6, Piqué 5.5, Puyol 6.5, Sylvinho 6 (Gudjohnsen m71, 5.5); Xavi 6, Toure 6, Keita 6; Bojan 5 (Pedro m55, 6), Eto'o 5.5, Hleb 5.5 (Henry m55, 6).
Goals: m19 Manu del Moral 0-1, m71 Keita 1-1.
Barça yellows: m5 Alves, m65 Eto'o, m92 Puyol.
Attendance: 65,249.
disspointed but we hav to learn from this mistakes
the fringe players/squad rotation players need to be ready and put in more efforts, passing was really poor today, poor combinatn and movement unlike our movements...i hope guardiola took some positives from this
UP BARCa
While I understand that we can't expect to be as lethal without the best player in the world on the pitch, we still showed little passion against a very tricky Getafe squad.
I'm very nervous about the future of this season. If Messi goes out again with a hamstring injury, we are going to have to deal with it and I'm afraid that in big games, we aren't going to be able to keep up our usual Barcelona pace.
As far as Bojan is concerned, I think he was more frustrated with himself than anything else.
One of those things guys....at least we got a point out of a tricky matchup. While I'm not saying we should accept the performance, I think we can forgive one sub par game provided we bring a better intensity to the big games comming up.
I'm still not of the believe that we need Messi to win/break games open.
*in my previous post, i meant to say 'poor combination and movement unlike our previous matches'
damnnnn..damn..damnn...i feel like killin someone....They say football is not just one man game, but just take out Messi from Barca squad, and our team is just not the same...this is just pathetic...These games tell me that if we loose Messi for a month or so, we are done for the season....We can't just be a one man team....I used to fight with my non Barca fans regarding this matter..>They always say Barca is just a one man team..but I always dispute their opinions...but even I have to admit, we are just a one man team...I can almost guarantee, if Messi was there, we woulda won...not by 6 goals or 5 goals, but we woulda def. won...he coulda run riot around the defenders, and opened up the space for Etoo...I hope he comes back fully fit ASAP...otherwise, i wouldn't be surprised if we drop points again next week...
anyways...Alves was my man of the match...he was always runnin and always lookin to feed the ball...Xavi had an off day...Etoo was unlucky not to score...Hleb and Bojan were absolutely horrendous...If that miss by Bojan wasn't called offside, I swear I woulda been super pissed off...Henry and Pedrito were better than the aforementioned two...Puyol was a beast in the back...Pique made few stupid errors, but he also saved us on more than a couple of occasions.....Toure was very good...Keita was useless apart from his goal....Anyways, like someone said, you gotta go low to jump back up...I hope this is what just happened....
Viva barca
I too was worried about bojan, he looked torn when he sat substituted, pepe said he thinks e's fine, i think he's low on confidence. the senior players just need to keep encouraging him and offering advice, but he'll start scoring again eventually and turning out better performances.
Usually people tug shirts or trip people to stop a goal-bound attack. Not puyol though, he dives head first into the player's cleats.............thats defintion of manliness.
man the amount of corners we won, if Rafa was playing one of them was bound to go in.
I hate to admit it but using Bojan on the right was a bad idea on pep's part. It was totally proven last year that Bojan cannot play on the right. Only the left wing works for that kid because he can cut in to his preferred foot to shoot. There was a slight rise in confidence when he was on the left. Poor kid was totally lost on the right. It would have been better had Pep switched hleb and bojan earlier in the game. Xavi had lost trust in bojan after a while resulting him in trying to launch long air balls into the box to find eto'o instead of slipping the ball through to bojan for a 1v1
The reason Messi's absence (Id say not just messi but Iniesta as well) is noted today because these are the kind of players with such exceptional dribbling skills that defenders facing them think "oh shit, I am screwed!". Their ability to dribble in such crowded areas is the key to unlocking such a shrewd defence. There was no one like that today. Bojan is a good dribbler but the confidence he needed to take on defenders was stripped away when he was on the right wing. Hell even his touch betrayed him today. We saw that confident dribbling after the inclusion of Pedro and Henry.
"It is good result for us. Getafe positioned themselves very well on the field and they have a lot of fast players upfront who were difficult to stop.
We were not able to control the game and in the end, that cost us
I’m not happy at all with my own performance because this was my first start in La Liga and I wanted to do something special. But it didn’t happen,” said the disappointed youngster.
man, the whole team better give him a few head pats and tell him chin up, especaially the forwards,
nic's right, it had to end sometime, i just didnt think it would be tonight. it was a frustrating game. shahenshah already commented, but wow i thought the ref was disgraceful. there were SOOOOOO many times we dispossesed them fairly and just because they fell he blew the whistle, i was so angry at him, i wanted to strangle him.
but from this game i learnt a two key things:
1. we are not invinsible, at least when messi isnt playing.
2. we really really need messi. he is so vital to our team.
otherwise Bojan really was horrendous. and ive commented before i have big doubts over his future. he is too small to play a lone center forward role, and he isnt effective on the wing. so where does he fit in really? Hleb was a disaster and im super pissed about it, why did we pay money for this guy? i didnt like the transfer then, and though i believe he can fit in our style, he really needs to pick it up big time! Pique is looking great in defense, but he overbelieves in his passing ability. he does make some great passes at times but ive seen it and commented often this year, he totally screws up some and one of those caused the goal tonight. Xavi was a bit off but i forgive him quickly after his years of consistent genius. i actually was quite happy with Keita tonight, i thought he did quite well and drove forward nicely and made quite a lot of solid passes. Gudi sucked big time off the bench, that guys lack of pace is just incredible. and Henry, my fav subject, WHY WHY WHY does he always cut right, cut left, then try a crap cross in that is either charged down or goes nowhere. cut in RIGHT, have a shot or use ur RIGHT FOOT to cross (which lead to our goal last week). that guy just drives me bonkers. Etoo also really had an off day, poor touches.
but this was bound to happen, and the good part is you can see Pep was pissed and will let the players know in so unclear manner. lets all hope though that Messi is fully fit for our "everest run"!!
bojan is 18 years old right now!!!!!!!!!!!! hes not gonna stay this same size 4ever.....yea he wont be huge, but he'll be a great center forward in the future....bojans size isnt even an issue....right now, he just needs more confidence. its difficult at his age, to play and start for the biggest club in the world, in front of fans that are never satisfied!! and last yr, he was barca's best center forward....it doesnt matter how bad we were last yr...he still scored goals.
I don't know who has the last word on movement of players in and out of the club but whoever he is , I don't think he is doing a great job . Looking back at this year and last year's moves , only Alves and Toure seemed to be good choices . Too many question marks on the others . Hleb and Keita are major doubts . Abidal is obviously a bust . Henry could NOT make the adjustment to La Liga for obvious reasons . He is lacking in basic ball skills and dribbling ability . Let's hope we get some decent players to fill the gaps in left back and left wing positions . Our goalkeeper is below par . It is just a mattet of when not if when Valdes commits dump mistakes that will cost the team valuable points, like yesterday's goal .
Sorry, I meant ( matter) not mattet and ( dumb) not dump !!
i think pep shouldn't have started hleb and bojan...they were extremely poor on the wings and i guess that crippled our options going forward. the team looked more intense when henry and pedro came on. also, this tendency to over-depend on Messi is worrying. i really hope this will never be the case - but it's really hard to deny this in whole as the Messi-less games produced our weaker performances so far.
apart from that, not all the players were playing their best game. fatigue from internationals over midweek perhaps?
but we shld be grateful we still have a 3 point lead and a massive goal difference separating us from the rest!
sempre amb el barsa =) "everest" here we come...
Guardiola did two mistakes:
1) Putting Keita and Toure together. That moved reduced the creative head in the middle to Xavi and it was easy for Getafe to mark Xavi alone. Especially when Messi was absent they needed to have more creativity in the middle, I would have gone with Sanchez or Gudjonsen.
2) Putting Bojan and Hleb together in starting eleven was another mistake. One of them should have started not both. But I am not sure whether Henry was not fully fit to start.
Please don't rush into righting off Bojan. he is not your usual Centre Forward, but he has talent. I have said earlier (especially last season on Giovani). you have to give these guys some comfort to play and evolve. We have already let off, Giovanni; don't do the same with him. Remember if Messi is a great player now it was partly because of his talent and partly because he was protected in the field in terms of performance by the like of Deco, Eto and Ronaldinho and Rijkaard off the field. They never made him feel the pressure. Remember when he came on there were so many who said that he don't have a powerful shot and he cannot finish welll. Now see how he has improved. Last season we have put enormous pressure on Giovanni and Bojan; Giovani didn't do well but Bojan survived. Let him develop slowly. I think there is an attitude problem for him; he has become kind of desperate and I believe it's time for Guardiola to talk to him - not to scold him but to assure him that he will be given time to develop.
And one more thing --- For God's sake remember this is only his second season.
Varughese;
I agree with you about Bojan . He is still young and he will only get better . Just give him some time . I would also like to see Buschetts and Pedro play more often to develop further . These players are talented and should be kept on the squad !!
Yes guys, I totally agree with you, please leave Bojan alone, it is just his second season! He has enormous talent and I felt so frustrated to see him in that mood after he was replaced. Man, it was not his position, so please, don't be upset! I personally think that in 1-2 year more he will be our superstar, so please people - be patient. I hope he would stay with us!
Regarding the game - I think Getafe played really great, so the result is quite fair. Without Messi and Iniesta, plus half of the Xavi and Etoo - I think it was fair upshot
Now to make things worse Sport.es has reported a story of Bojan going to be loaned out this winter.
I have written what I think of it have a look : LINK
Loaning out Bojan for a year or so may not be a bad idea . Provided that he goes to a good league with emphasis on technique and ball skills . I don't recommend the EPL or the SPL !!
We missed a lot of key players yesterday and we still managed a result and it would have been a victory if it wasnt for some bad luck. We have now hit the woodwork 5 times in the last two games so luck is clearly not on our side right now.Lets hope we get it back now. Speaking of Luck did anybody see Madrids luck against Recre. God knows how Recre didnt score a goal in the first 15 mins of that match and then they get their lucky deflection. Jammy!
Last night was the quiet before the storm…..watch what happens in the next few games…
As for Bojan, please lay off the boy. I cant understand this unforgiving attitude from so many fans. Yes he had an awful game, but he is just a kid ffs and he was playing out of position. 18 years old and playing for the biggest club in the world!! They cant all take the world by storm overnight like Messi. Give him a break, he has a lot of potential and a great future ahead of him. What he needs now is the support of his teammates, his manager and most importantly the fans.
As for this whole Messi dependent argument, i dont buy it. Of course there is going to be a diff with and without Messi, he is by far the best player in the world. If anybody thinks any team can perform the same with him than without him then they need wake up. Not to mention we are also missing another key player in Iniesta. When teams pack the box like Getafe did you need players like Messi/Iniesta to unlock the defense….what team do u think can do it without their best players? Real? HAHA! Man utd struggle without Rooney (who is their best player) and Ronaldo, Arsenal are collapsing without some of their key players. Take Gerard and Torres out of Liverpool and they are a nothing team. Out of all of the top European teams we are by far the best without our best players on the pitch. Ppl who say we are a one man team have no understanding of the game.
@blaugranaboy
i cant believe you can say that about bojan, i never expected it...HE'S JUST 18 YEARS...how many other 18 yrs old players hav as mush talent as he has, he's an 18yrs old center forward that was played on the right wing in a top-class league against a team double marking him and havin 10 men behind the ball, u can forgive him for havin a bad game, he has already showed in previous matches last year that he's one for the future. As of his size, i can bet villa was definitely smaller when he was the same age as bojan, strikers like this dont play their game based on size. gosh, too much pressure on kids these days
as for the match, i tink pep should also try hleb in the midfield since keita n toure togeda cripple the creativity of the midfield
YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK!!!
One bad game and all of sudden most of you have turned into "football directors", trading, dealing and making hedges on almost your entire team.
GET A GRIP!!!
This is football and any team can win or lose on any given day. It doesn't mean that Bojan's departure is should be imminent; it doesn't mean that Guddy is a bad footballer;it doesn't mean that Valdes is a bad keeper; It doesn't mean that Henry lacks footbalistic intelligence; it doesn't mean that Keita is unable to play fast football; it doesn't mean that we can't win by a margin bigger than one goal without Messi...This is absolutely ridiculous.
Getafe is not a bad team at all and it simply took us time to reach our speed of play and by the time we did it was too late since we lacked the finesse on our final touches. Well, so what? We drew a game we "could" (not "should", anyone who knows anything about football knows that "should" is the wrong verb in any competitive context)have won but we played above par football and we cannot ignore that fact. Our "should" mentality is what hurts us the most since that is the most dangerous attitude a competitor can have. Granted Pique made a mistake but has anyone taken the time to look at Manu's goal and comment eon it...Jeez it was a great opportunistic goal...doesn't he deserve your respect as a footballer?
diatus, u're right....but u have to forgive some of them as fans who would like their team to win almost all d matches so they can bragg...its just d part about bojan thats totally wrong

Why is it that we win 6-0, 5-0, 4-1, 6-1 when Messi starts but see a scoreline of 1-0 or 1-1 when Messi is rested or starts on the bench?
Even though pique gave away posession which lead to the goal, he made some key saves to deny getafe from scoring another.
How did Valdes not see that goal coming?!
Keita had some nice one touch passes and good outlet balls but at times his passing was slow allowing defenders to intercept it. Thankfully he got us the equalizing goal.
It was frustrating to watch getafe parking the bus in front of goal and diving all over the pitch. Eto'o did not deserve the yellow at all!
Oh well, its not the end of the world. We are still in the lead and there is plenty of football to be played.
Honestly though, sometimes I suspect the refs are paid off by madrid. Make all the wrong calls for madrid and all the wrong calls against barca. Hein?!
Regardless, a draw is 10 times better than a loss. Sometimes one needs to get low to jump higher.
