With just two games played in La Liga, Pep Guardiola will already be under pressure after Barça failed to beat a well organized Racing Santander at Camp Nou tonight. Barça dominated possession but suffered to break through the Racing defence, and after Leo Messi gave Barça the lead from the penalty spot, Racing equalized with their first shot of the game with just fifteen minutes remaining.
Pep Guardiola surprised everyone with his team selection giving starts to youngsters Sergio Busquets in the central midfield role and Pedro Gonzalez on the left, both players performed well and showed they could have futures at the club. It was expected that Messi wouldn't start after arriving yesterday from a long journey, but alongside him on the bench were Iniesta and Bojan Krkic while Hleb got a start on the right of the attack.
After fifteen minutes Hleb and Pedro swapped wings and the first danger came when Hleb combined with Keita, broke in on the left of the area but his cross was cleared to Keita who mishit his shot. Then on 18 minutes Sergio Busquets found Pedro on the right but his low shot caused no problem for Toño the Racing keeper diving low to his left. Keita then had a header saved from a Xavi corner but the chances started to dry up. On 36 minutes Hleb was fouled and had to come off with an ankle injury, first reports say he could be out for two to three weeks but he will undergo tests tomorrow to find the true extent of the injury.
Barça almost took the lead at the start of the second half when Alves seemed to be looking to cross but the ball drifted and ended up bouncing off the crossbar. Pedro had a great chance after 57 minutes after Iniesta crossed from the left, but his shot from 10 yards was stopped by Toño. Two minutes later Messi came on in place of Keita and Barça began to create more danger though they had problems to find the final shot. Messi's dinked free kick in the 67th minute almost fooled the keeper, and a minute later Barça had an extended attack with no fewer than three chances to score. First Eto'o couldn't finish Alves's dangerous cross, then Sergio had a shot blocked, and finally Iniesta sent Messi into the arera, as Toño came out Messi clipped the ball across goal but the ball only reached Alves at the far post with a tight angle and when he pulled the ball back again the defence intervened.
Barça's insistance finally paid off when in the 70th minute Alves again got down the right to cross and Racing defender Fernandez stuck out an elbow to deflect the ball away and the ref blew for a penalty. Messi stepped forward and coolly sent Toño the wrong way. Barça's joy turned to despair soon after when Garay's low free kick was deflected past Valdés by Johnathan Pereira. Some will undoubted blame Valdés who was diving to cover Garay's shot, but the responsibility really lies with the defence for not blocking out Pereira.
Guardiola risked everything by putting on Bojan for Puyol with eight minutes left, but Barça could only win corners which all came to nothing, while at the other end Pereira battled with Alves and Abidal in search of a winner for Racing.
Barça looked slightly better in the second half especially when Alves got forward on the right. However, the finishing is still not there and Barça seem to lack other options as the long shots and corner kicks were again very disappointing. We'll have to stop this habit of conceding a goal to the other team's only shot of the game. At least after today we don't have to wait two weeks until the next game, and on Tuesday at home to Sporting Lisbon we will surely see an improvement in our finishing.
Barça: Valdés 6, Alves 6.5, Piqué 5.5, Puyol 6 (Bojan m82, 6), Abidal 5; Xavi 6.5, Sergio Busquets 6.5, Keita 5.5 (Messi m59, 6); Hleb 6 (Iniesta m38, 6.5), Eto'o 5, Pedro 6.5.
Goals: m71 Messi (pen) 1-0; m76 Pereira 1-1
Barça yellow: Iniesta m88.
Attendance: 54,678
this was a good match by barca.... i stil believe they are just jelling.....they just need to step up the intensity from the beginning of the match...i'm sure guardiola's takin note.....d only problem i had with the team was abidal
as for the comments, 'sack guardiola', 'guardiola is inexperienced', 'guardiola is this, is that'.........u guyscan carry slogans to the next match to express urselves....wat kinda fans are these?
blaugranaboy, i know u well enough so i'm not surprised we think the same....
just wanna see as nic, diatus, namibia n co feel
its really not that confusing at all why we struggle to score. its a tactic called "parkign the bus", where EVERY team we play puts 10 men behind the ball the entire game and hope to counter. and why we concede its a tactic called "attack abidal because we will definetely mess up, no doubt again it", and thats what teams do
u people just need be patient.....give them some time...its not as if they've bn playin d same way in dis recent matches....there's obvious improvement
one thing not mentioned so far was the stadium. i have never in many many many years of support seen the stadium so empty in a league match, especially the opening home match. that is really sad to see. it makes me angry too because people dont appreciate the seats they have there that while many of us would die to have regulars seats to attend every week.
ok ive calmed down a bit now, didnt kill any1 so thats good news!
what do u guys think will happen if barca loses on tuesday against sporting? do u think they will just move on? or do u think guardiola will be fired? or do u think laporta will step down?
tell me what u think!
blaugrana boy--- i agree with u!! it made me mad to see the stadium almost empty...usually when its raining, the fans leave all the bottom seats and go up on top but it was still way too empty! i wish i went to college in barcelona!! id be at every game
I was just thinking about something. In preseason games we were successful because that games are not important at all, so any team that we play against they will try to do something against us, aka they will open up a little bit, because they got nothin to lose and off course they all fail. I think that we played against stronger teams than Numancia and Racing Santander and we still have managed to score at least 4 goals.
So everybody have seen what could happened to them if they try to play anything else than total defense against us, even Numancia's coach have admitted that he has studied all ours preseason and CL games on tapes.
So I think that our preseason games should be little less efective and we should definitively loose couple games.
i can't believe i saw a sack guardiola there in the a preview, jeez sack pep and put in who now, barney the dinosaur? or teenage mutant ninja turtles or what!? 'll just take that as a stupid "frustration remark"
But anyway on my observation of the match we DO have problems.
1: 4-3-2-1 formation aint working, this means that there is only 1 striker to aim all the passes for (eto'o) pretty easy for a 9 man defence to cover, 1 incident i saw iniesta was running into the box with the ball and eto'o was screamin for him to pass the ball while he had two defenders covering him obviously they gonna cut u down eto'o geez
2:i think since that game against rangers teams have come up with a pretty succseful formula against us--> pack our defence and they wont du shit
3: we start slowly from the back this gives the enemy enough chance to regroup and pack up as they are so cowardly adept at.
4: for me abidal was O.K up until racing scored their goal from there he gave a throw in straight to a racing player had countless passes to racing players he is poor no doubt a january replacement would be nice pep tell txiki
We saeem to pack our balls when the gaol tally is against us the confidence dropes so low its disgusting wen racing scored even xavi made some wack passes
we need a two man striking force so the packed defence would have a hard tim to know who to mark out!!
on a good note i think keita looks a good signing for us he really is a force and busquets and pedro ledesma have some skills which is pleasing to the eye
Dissapointment YES end of the world not by a long shot
oh and i forget ETO"O SUCKKEDDDD!!!!!!!! It was the same player i almost threw my remote at the tv against man united, shit. and who told those dum fans to wave white handkerchiefs that should really help us win naw
I no it dosnt matter much but where are barca on the ladder? Bottom?
A bit of a disappointment again this night.. For me, there's two important things that we have to realise when watching tonights game:
1) Messi and Iniesta didn't play the first half - the whole team was much better when they came on in the second.
2) We didn't have the luck needed tonight - Racing did.
Apart from that, I'm glad to see Pep reacting on Henry. I still have a bit faith in Henry, but he has to show something within the next five games.
Oh Please...FIRE GUARDIOLA???? That is crazy. Anyone who saw this game will tell you that this is fantastic coach waiting to explode. I LIKED WHAT I SAW...THE GUTS with his line up, THE COJONES with the subs...we tied but I am upbeat because the moment it clicks for the players, it will be hard to stop this team. This was a great display by PEP and his boys. A bit unlucky in the end. I have to admit that I was not a huge fan when he was fist announced and I was one of the ones asking for Jose Morinho but after today's show of guts and cojones...well, I LIKE THIS GUY MORE AND MORE!!!
@Blau Namibia
you should read the original blaugranaboy's comments before blaming Eto'o. I think he gave heart and soul today. It's just hard to get anything done when they 'park the bus'!!!...
...."its really not that confusing at all why we struggle to score. its a tactic called "parkign the bus", where EVERY team we play puts 10 men behind the ball the entire game and hope to counter. and why we concede its a tactic called "attack abidal because we will definetely mess up, no doubt again it", and thats what teams do "...
I think the kid is fairly accurate in his technical analysis of the game. And it is very simple, so let's just leave it at that. See, even I, am not blaming Valdes today (we are making progress hun!!!).
good view from diatus...dont mind the 'sack guardiola' people
Its nice to see a few other fans who can appreciate how unlucky we were today. We actually played quite well today, the movement was good, the passing was a lot better and faster, Pedro and Sergio both look good and even with 10 men behind the ball we still managed to create a lot of chances. Racing also have an excellent defence and are very well organised so its not like we were playing an easy team. Today though, NOTHING went our way. The first penalty was never given and it was as clear cut as they get, the post denied us, their goalkeeper made some amazing saves, there were balls cleared off the line, offsides that never were and just to top it all off the foul that led to the goal was NEVER a foul. Had we had just a bit of luck in this game we would have won.....if we had the same luck today that Racing had then we would have won comfortably. The key now is to keep supporting this team because they will come good....our opponents cant always be this lucky and we will get better and better every game. My biggest worry is that the fans start to turn on Pep and the players....we all know how quickly that can change things!
Btw.....I thought Pep was great today. Leaving Henry out this early into the season took balls and it shows his intent, something Rijkaard never did. He obviously had an effect on them at half time because they came out a much better team in the 2nd half (when was the last time you remember Rijkaard doing that). The subs were all good and had an actual impact on the game. This team needs time......it will prob take till January for the players to really click and for the team to play to its full potential. I think it will be worth the wait when they do!
I think we r the reason behind other teams tactics ,, we always give them the chance to stay organized at the back or maybe we force them to stay on their area . we never do good counter attacks , we never play fast football NOT ANY MORE, all we do is just keep the ball and past it between the players . I haven't seen any good distance shots by any barca player for long time , All we need is to play the old barca style ... three or four passes to the goal not to the back !!! we r really REALLY weak at the front and at the last 18 yards of the pitch .. about PEP i think he is doing his best and he taking baby steps towards the team he want to have eventually but i hope it won't take any longer .. To be honest i lost any hope in the champions league and i wish we could just concentrate on the league this year cuz apparently we r not the team that can compete with all competition .. i know its too early to say and i don't wanna be harsh but i think this is the truth ... ALL RESPECT to the people above
@FCB88
You posed the following questions:
"...what do u guys think will happen if Barca loses on Tuesday against sporting? do u think they will just move on? or do u think Guardiola will be fired? or do u think Laporta will step down? ..."
These are very good questions to ask. Indeed, President, coach and players should all be held accountable for the club's performance. Well, here’s my question to you: Are 3 games representative of an entire campaign? I think that my question is parallel to yours. One cannot, honestly, affirmatively, answer your questions without first answering mine. Henceforth, I will answer my question and ultimately hope that it helps you answer yours.
1-Are 3 games representative of an entire campaign?
Absolutely not! First, those who followed the league last year can attest to the fact that teams like Espanyol, Valencia and Valladolid were extremely hot in the first leg and things abruptly turned in the second leg for one reason or another. This drives to the very basic and widely acknowledged point that a season is a marathon and not a 100meter race. Teams form, storm and execute during a season. Some teams never get past the “forming” stage for one reason or another, some teams “storm” but never consistently “execute” and some teams progressively travel the stages seamlessly and overtime become consistent executioners. My belief is that Barcelona is still in the late stages of "forming", since positional assignments are still being worked out and tactical systems are still being learned. On the other hand, the team we played today (Racing Santander) is in the "storming" stage since it is able to execute but I can guarantee you that it will not be consistent throughout the season. Losing or drawing Against Sporting will certainly increase the ranks of those calling for Pep and Laporta to resign but one needs to always remember the objective when the change was initially implemented.
2-What is change if not allowed to take root?
First, I was surprised to see empty seats and white handkerchiefs today. Are they already giving up even before the first game is played? Jeez, they might be Catalans but they are not true fans. I am sure that those who are leading the protest are the same ones who failed to unseat Laporta last summer. That having been said, it seems impossible that he or his appointees will ever get a fair trial in Barcelona and you and I are the ones truly being short-changed since we are the ones buying the gear and sometimes even flying across oceans to go see the games. Those who truly understand the game will always agree with the fact that good change in football takes time. Whenever a new “culture” challenges an “old” order, there are bound to be frictions. Laporta should not even be mentioned in this discussion since, I believe, he is carrying out his duties as well as could be expected. As for Pep, I think that his attitude is right and that he will probably surprise a lot of nay Sayers. As for the players, I don’t think that there’s anyone who can honestly tell me that they are not playing with heart and that they are not playing to win. So, in short, we have to allow change to take root. It will be painful at times but ultimately, we will go back to our winning ways and all this will be nothing but vague memories. My optimism is not misplaced. I am confident that the light will soon shine for this team since I am starting to see Pep reclaim this team from the players. I can tell you right now that I can foresee the day when Eto’o will come on as a sub, not because he is not capable or not because he is not a prolific scorer but simply because Pep is trying to approach things a bit differently and because of the simple fact that he is the “decider”. Now, that will be change.
this sporting lisbon match i don;t think there is gona be room for errors(abidal), if the fans can go on like they did yestarday over a draw than hell's gonna break loose come tuesday,
what im gonna concetrate more this season is the away games i think they will be key to how the league goes for us ,,
And BTW what theF@#k is wrong with not winning anythin for two seasons??? i mean i don't really see what the fuss is about say if we win nothing this season then ther's gonna be another revolution or what??? this is judt rediculous to me really
really nice to read some logical and senseful comments. diatus, hilal, layidbi, namibia, good to see boys. if u have some spare time go to the preview and see how rash some people are and how unfortunately i had to get into a bit of a verbal battle. the one guy claims that guardiola is a "yes man" and was only brought in for laporta/txiti to use him like a puppet. i honestly could not believe that so had to back pep up, but my comments werent appreciated. lol.
its just crazy that after 4 real games (3 in my mind, not wisla away) ppl talk about firing guardiol and laporta. what do u want laporta to do, go on the field and throw hte ball in the net with hsi hands?!!!? im happy with guardiola, he is a local legend and today showed guts and initiative that most people here can see clearly, SO THANK GOD for that. i agree with i like diatus up there, it could take till about dec/jan for things to full work. but that is exactly when rijkaard's team turned around his first season and after that we were unstoppable. not saying its going to happen, but red alert panic is not warranted now at all. give the team time, get behind them.
I have seen this season before. Thank God I didn't watch the game. Maybe Pep isn't the one for the job after all.
Yeah, I also appreciated that he left Henry out for this game. I also do believe that we need to give Pep time before the end of the year. He won't do the same Rijkiards mistakes I believe.
Racing weren't organised, they just played with their whole team in defence. this is seriously negative and is not entertaining to watch.
a ban should be put in place outlawing teams to put all players in defence as it goes against the norms of football.
well at least Sporting won't close up shop as they are also an attacking team, and this will definately make for an exciting match can't wait!!!
We deserved to win there only chance of the match and they scored!!! Barca played great though!!!
one thing i noticed ,every time henry come as a sub he dose something special .. i hope pep take this on consideration .. etoo showed his commitment to the team i think yesterday , much better .. but as i said in previous comments i think we lack some techniques to break the @parking the bus @ tactic
and people please .. firing the manager is not a game that we need to play every season !!!
i am sure after 4-5 matches all of u will be ashame of your selfs
They are so lucky, seems to me they never run out of it. But usually they pay the price in Champions League.
Bad Luck excuse, We played well and didn't get a chance. Yes I have seen this season before. Pep will get his chance to prove his good. Only time will tell.
Typical Barcelona control the entire match i.e. possession wise but can’t score in open play.
The problem is the 4-3-3 formation it’s become too predictable.
As we saw last season every team we play against even the top sides defend with 10 men I'm talking about Manchester United who we all saw defending with 10 men like a lower team in La Liga home and away.
Barcelona run out of ideas when teams go on defense even though they dominate they find it hard to score for gods sake just try a variation of 4-4-2 with Henry and Eto’o up front, Messi and Inesta (Hleb) on the wings.
Its great to see the level headedness of the people here. Guys the good times are going to come, we just need to tweak the offense, etoo needs to find the shoes he was wearing 2 seasons ago, and we are sorted.
I am pretty sure Guardiola has seen that abidal is our problem (we have shifted from valdes) and maybe in jan we will get a left back that knows what his position require.
Putting those young boys in was a fantastic and bold move, as racing must have been preparing for messi and iniesta. Plus it gives us a chance to show off the potential of our youth team
They were hungry and quick and full of ideas.
We were unlucky but we were much better than the first game
btw where is jeffren? has he also gone to celtic on loan? Cos he is one hell of a winger.
c'mon guys...don't hit panic button yet...it's only been 2 games...we still got 36 more games....well, if the same thing continues after 10-12 more games, then yes, u can panic..but it's only been 2 games...have some patience....I for one liked how we played yesterday...We played some great football...we just ran out of luck....Also, u guys have to understand we were playin most of the game without Messi and INiesta...Had they been ther from the start, I m sure we woulda seen a different scoreline.....and I also liked how Pep wasn't scared of makin the subs...HE showed some balls there....Pep is gonna do wonders at Barca..He just needs some more time....Viva Barca...
@FCBMAISE
I believe that Jeffren is injured. We sure can use is fearlessness in attack. I am looking forward to great things from this young man when he returns.
@Blaugranaboy
so, you are Laporta's assistant now?
Oh man that is funny. Man, those guys in the preview wanted your scalp!!!especially Barca-Rotterdam!!!
No, but that's the beauty of this forum you know. We argue, agree, sometimes shout but we always walk together since we are all cut out of the same cloth...right Nic!!!? where has he been lately anyway. These days he just puts up his comments and vanishes...come on dude ...we can use your viewpoint on all these arguments since you are the original "instigator"!!!(meant in a good way, of course).
yeah he was upset and me but he was talking such rubbish, had nothing proper to reply ever.
and yeah jeffren is injured for 2 months i read. and its crosas who is at celtic, and its on a permanent deal with a buy back clause in 2010.
Hey Diatus - I am here, but I think the argument on Guardiola was great to read and wanted to let it run naturally. I'm glad most people are showing patience with the team as there are many good signs. What still worries me most is the defending at set pieces and on crosses, let's hope Pep is working hard in training to sort out these mistakes.
That is right, I hope Pep will make another wise action - get rid off Abidal by January!
Why so negative about this match? There was considerable improvement in attitude and strategy in this match. I have written that the real factor Barcelona lacking is the pace. I saw that improving in the second half. Especially from the break to the Goal, It was real quick. Racing held on by their breath. With more performance like this the confidence will increase and will show more improvement. We need to get more personals in the box, almost all of alves crosses went to waste. I have written about the positives and negatives from the game, have a look. LINK
Just as I said last season, BARCA NEED TO CHANGE TO 4-4-2, or as Blauchrana_boy said, get a Adebayor TYPE CF. For those of you with a remote interest in the english Premier League, Arsenal 2 years ago suffered from this 10-man behind teh ball tactic. It makes playing on the floor extremely difficult so you end up corssing from far. Problem is, Messi, Henry, Eto and Bojan have no real heading ability. Adebayor came along and although he cant finish great, he can hold up the ball, score headers, and has changed Arsenal from 4th placed to nearly winning the title in 1 season. Any of you with a remote shred of intelligence will realise Barca having Silva, Messi, Joaqin, Ronaldo or any world-class winger is useless without a tall, strong striker.
This game Henry didnt play, Eto played and he played sh*t. Stop blaming Henry, stop blaming Pep he has had F O U R games ffs. I think a change in formation is in need. 4-4-2 with Henry and Eto up front, Messi right, Hleb or Iniesta left, Xavi and Iniesta/Toure/Keita in the middle. And do some of you live near Abidal? Take out his legs, he is so poor I cant comprehend how he plays in any top league in the world.
Come on Barca, lets see some passion and quality and take this league with the dogs of Madrid!!

Racing had 1 goal from 1 shot, dissappointed and what the hell is going on...!!
ive already commented quite a lot on the preview, but really people need to NOT blow this game out of proportion. we should have had a goal with iniesta PK which was clear and tono pulled off some ridiculous reflex saves. im not excusing the game as a whole, especially first half, but the signs are not all gloom and doom. (except for abidal!!!!!!!!!, why is he so bad)
and there are already the "FIRE GUARDIOLA" camp. he has had 4 real games to coach!!!! (3 in my mind, not wisla away). tonight i was happy with him. he was brave playing pedro and busquet and they both looked very good, especially busquet. and he dropped henry, and maybe that is what is needed to get him going again, otherwise January to Man Citey, PLZ take him. guardiola was brave to play the youngsters he believes in and made some very positive substituions to try and change the game. 2nd half there were moments we looked a good side going forward. and frankly, if abidal wasnt such a waste of skin and bones a three back should have easily held a team that attacked with MAX 2 players.
so what to do now? yes we have a problem, every team, home or away is going to play us 10 men behind the ball. i think we need a strong central, tall forward, but at the same time i really like etoo and i would hate to see him made useless. but i honestly belive that if the players play at a fast pace, always running into space we can still create space. there were times tonight alves had a good space on the right and looked dangerous.
everyone please be patient, at least for a while. remembe one frank rijkaard. first season, december we were 15th place, 7 pts from relegatoin. everyone said "fire frank, he sucks, he has no experience, fire laporta". that yr we finished 2nd after 23 games unbeaten, next yr league, next yr CL and league. im not saying pep is going to do this, but at least give him a chance. no one here can guarantee he will do it or not, but at least let him TRY.
