Barça 2 Mallorca 3

Sunday, 11 May 08, 10:39 PM · Comments (33)

Barça played their last game at Camp Nou under Frank Rijkaard and managed to throw away a 2-0 lead to lose 2-3 in the last minute. Less than 40,000 turned up to see the game, and sections of the public showed their displeasure with Joan Laporta during the match and at the end when Dani Güiza scored Mallorca's third there was a bigger display of protests.

It is games such as this that makes a football fan want to give it all up. However, we should remember that there was nothing at stake for Barça tonight. What I find difficult to understand is that the crowd picked on Deco and especially Eto'o to vent their frustration. If Frank Rijkaard deserves respect for his overall achievements in five years then surely Deco and Eto'o deserve the same for being a core part of the team that won two Ligas and a Champions League. To be fair it was not that many people whistling them but whoever those fans were I would rather they stayed at home.

Barça played well for brief periods of the first half and in the 17th minute we took the lead. Messi went on a run past two players and when he tried to thread the ball through to Deco the ball broke off a defender to Henry who hit the ball home from the edge of the area.

However, the game was lacking intensity and only two fine saves from Pinto, substituting Valdés tonight, kept Barça in front. At half time Bojan came on for Deco and Messi switched to a free role in midfield. In the 56th minute Henry did well to rob the ball in midfield and he quickly combined with Eto'o to get away down the left, his cross found Messi whose first time volley was well saved by Moya but Eto'o was on hand to stab home Barça's second.

This made no difference to the critics who continued to whistle Eto'o every time he got the ball. After 62 minutes Rijkaard decided to give Messi a rest and brought on Giovani. Unfortunately with Messi off the field Barça fell to pieces. In the 67th minute Mallorca won a corner that wasn't and when the ball came out to Valero his shot took a deflection off Thuram that gave Pinto no chance.

Oleguer then came on for Zambrotta and three minutes later Mallorca equalized after Güiza received the ball in space only for Thuram to intervene, unfortunately the Frenchman's square clearance went straight to Webo who volleyed the ball into the ground and up over Pinto into the net. Eto'o had a good chance to put Barça back in front on 80 minutes but Moya did well to save. Then in the 93rd minute Güiza again found himself with time in the area to beat Pinto for the winner.

I suppose it was to be expected. The team were not playing badly but there was a lack of intensity that was not helped at all by the attitude of the crowd. What possesses some people to take a bed sheet to the ground in order to protest I will never understand. Even if there is nothing to play for if you go along to a game surely you want to see your team win. It seems some would rather lose so they can get on the telly waving their giant handkerchief.

Barça: Pinto 6, Zambrotta 6 (Oleguer m67, 5.5), Thuram 5.5, Puyol 6, Abidal 6.5; Edmilson 4.5, Toure 6, Deco 6 (Bojan m45, 5), Messi 7 (Giovani m62 5.5), Eto'o 5.5, Henry 6.

Goals: m17 Henry 1-0, m56 Eto'o 2-0, m67 Varela 2-1, m70 Webo 2-2, m93 Güiza 2-3.

Barça Yellows: m38 Thuram, m62 Edmilson, m92 Edmilson (=2=red)

Attendance: 39,928

Henry's goal
Eto'o's goal

What to say... I'm sorry for Frank. Edmilson proved us once again that he shouldn't be playing.

There were a few positive moments in this game as well. Messi, need I say more? Pinto improved plenty from his last game. I had one thought in my head during this game, "Eto'o, score a goal and shut these so called fans the hell up". His goal was easily the moment of the match.

Why were "fans" whistling at Eto'o?

There is a well known rule in football... The first half is for the players... the second half is on the managers...
This game also proves that without Ronaldinho.. Franky is nothing

I'd guess because of that yellow he "intentionally" received to miss el clasico but who knows. Same with Deco.

I'll never understand some of Barca's fans

Fans whistle because they dislike players with a winning mentality who scores buckets of goal despite injury layoffs and national team duties....yea I think that's it

i'm sorry but are we missing the point here?? nothing at stake?? how about a champions league spot! uefa cup here we come! the fans have every right to get stuck into a team that we keep reminding ourselves won a european cup and two league titles a few years ago - they have every right to demand a high level of performance from footballers at the peak of world football! god - hurry up and get murcia out of the way and lets hope we don't slip up there and atletico capitalise...

barcaman78-----ur wrong, there was nothing at stake....we have to go through the champions league qualifiers anyway because we cant get 2nd place anymore so yea...even if we do get 4th place... we have to do the champions league qualifiers so that doesnt really change nething....but the players should have tried their best anyway which they didnt do at all 2day. very embarrassing.

i've never seen a group of fans so fickle as barcas. again i ask, who whistles their own players 20 mins into a game or in this case from the beginning?
and then these same fans want to see their team win. way to support them.

it's a sad way to see rijkaard's final home game, but let's be honest would a good result have changed the way people will view rijkaard's legacy? all i know is that it is hard for players to get excited about a game when the fans are booing them.

Eto'o should have been disciplined last year for his psychotic rant about there being some 'bad people' at the club, but that's really the only legitimate grievance fans can have regarding Sammy. He lays it all out there every night--as much as any Catalan player. And his goals per game average is near the top in Europe. Catalans don't know what a gem they have in e10; learn to appreciate a good thing!

Yea, I was really bothered by the jeers suffered by Etoo...This dude was out for half of the season, comes back, and still remains the top scorer for the club in La liga...and this is the treatment he gets?? Barca fans definitely are the most fickle minded fans in European football..They have no patience at all....When things go right, they jsut worship everyone from the team, but when things go awry, they just throw whatever they got...I dont' like this at all...I really hope Messi doesn't suffer from the same fate....He is prolly the only player being worshipped in Barcelona, but what if in 2 or 3 yrs he looses his magic??? Damn..I'd not be able to see Messi being booed off...

Once again, good bye to Rijkaaard...He deserved much better response from the crowd...Even if we had lost by 5 goals, I woulda still paid homage to the 'once' great manager...

every time rijkaard stepped out onto the pitch the fans started cheering. this was a nice touch, and i'm glad they showed some appreciation for him in this way. The whistles for deco, eto'o, and henry (yes before henry's goal they were whistling every touch henry had), i think probably came from a minority of the crowd. 7,000 people whistling out of 40,000 isn't all the fans but it sure can be heard. I find it odd that after henry's goal the crowd stopped jeering him but after eto'o's goal the crowd kept up with their antics. Maybe because sam's celebration was clearly antagonistic to the crowd.

All in all a poor way to go out for frank, i feel bad for him. his players have turned into a pathetic mesh of frustrated anger/apathy.

Look I respect Rijkaard a lot and I think what he has done for this club is incredible. He made us the best in the world and he did it playing beautiful football. The jeering and protests are way too much. He does deserve a dignified and respectable farewell, however i do feel he is getting too much sympathy from some of the posters here. The players are a "pathetic mesh of frustrated anger/apathy" because he allowed them to degenerate into that state of mind. What you see on the pitch is a reflection of the energy he is instilling in his players. A manager is supposed to portray confidence, power and respect. I see none of those when i look at Rijkaard and I have not seen those things in a long time! I wish him the best of luck wherever he goes and I hope he is very successful in the future. I also hope that Pep can do what Frank couldnt cos with the team in the state it is right now if he cannot step up and deliver what he seems to think he can, then this team has more dark days ahead.

hilal: cant' disagree with you more. they are a pathetic mesh of frustrated anger/apathy because they have poor mental fitness. This is of course party rijkaard's fault, partly their own fault, partly the fan's fault, partly the technical staff's fault, partly the medical staff's fault ... you can go on and on. Rijkaard barely says enough for you to judge whether he's powerful, confident, has power, or respect. you didn't see those things in him even when we were winning trophies ... it's the nature of the man. people here are silly for their blame rijkaard bring mourinho stupidity, the problem is multi-faceted and certainly does not boil down to one man or one issue.

I never said that Rijkaard was solely to blame, of course not. As you said the problem is multi-faceted. Having said that though a tougher manager would never have let it descend to this level. Mourinho, as much as you may hate him, would NEVER have allowed his players to become what our players have become no matter what the problems were. The fact that Rijkaard barely says enough (as you pointed out) proves my point. You look at all the tough minded managers out there (Ferguson, Mourinho, Capello, Benitez), if their players are not performing they SHOW it. They translate their anger or their determination or their fighting spirit onto the players. Rijkaard doesnt do that, that to me is a huge flaw and has allowed our players to descend into this pathetic ensemble. We are probably going to have to agree to disagree on this and I can certainly see your point of view, I just interpret it in a different way. Lets just hope Pep can live up to his legendary status. I hope the fans will take it easy on him and realise that rebuilding a team doesnt happen overnight!

It seriously hurts me to see Barca lose after being in the lead. The same thing happened in the match against Betis, which shows that the players need to work on controlling the game while they're up. I really hope that Guardiola is ready for the challenge of coaching a big club like Barca, although it is worrying that he doesn't have much experience (only 1 season as the Barca B manager)..

I wish Rijkaard all the best in the future, and I'm very grateful for the accomplishments he helped Barca achieve.

Unbelivable u lose a match in which u were ahead by 2 and playing vs 10 men.

Fans were acting like that cuz Etoo and Deco didnt play vs Madrid cuz both of them got silly yellow cards vs Valencia despite them knowing that if they got booked they would be suspended and miss "El Clasico". Did they do it on purpose?, dont think so, but they did miss the match and that obviously affected the team.

Most of the whistling was for Laporta, once again people show they are tired of him.

Barcelona fans aint the worst in europe, they are the most demanding crowd in the world, thats all [and this year they got tons of reasons to be pissed, Barcas squad is the best in the world yet they won nothing and lost the League to the worst Madrid in years (talent wise)]. They dont like guys getting paid millions and performing terribly... this people have to work their arses to pay for tickets and what they get in return aint very pleasing.

True Frank aint the only one to blame for the current state of mind of several players, but some managers do help with this kind of issues, for example Ferguson, that guy creates winners and helps his players build a strong personality and become confident, hope Pep can manage that.

Only one week to go and this hell will be over. Really looking forward to next season.

About Rijkaard, its always nice to remember the good moments. As a man, he can only be called a gentleman, he always respected everyone and never blamed anyone but himself for Barcelonas poor performances, always stood up by his players no matter what, every single time he was honest and tried to find the best in others, people like this are needed everywhere. Good luck wherever u go.

Guys Forget about the season. I didn't watch the game it was pointless to me to get my self angry for nothing. I knew we where going to lose because Frank is still coaching. Most of the Camp Nou didn't come to game as well. Frank is finally leaving and I can't watch Barca is such bad performance any more. Next time I watch a game, Frank will not be on the bench.

Hilal- I don't know if there is anything in the story, there is nothing in the local press here. Wenger needs someone to replace Flamini and he is upset that Barça are often said to be chasing Hleb, so it could just be retaliation. The fact that Toure's brother Kolo plays at Arsenal might also influence. Barça would be foolish to let him go.

@ Nic - I disagree

They would be commiting footballing suicide to let Yaya go lol!!

He is the only midfeilder of Barca to make it into the top 20 at this moment in time. For me this is one of Barcas weak points. Franks insistence in playing Xavi or Gudjonhson or Deco where Iniesta is clearly the more attack-minded and gifted player is ridiculous.

We all talk about the strikers not scoring? Henry had one-on-one for the first time in a couple months and made Casillias look like an amateur. Same with Eto, he hardly gets one-on-ones like he used to - he cant always score from long range the midfeild needs to provide more service more me.

Without Ronaldinho and Inesta coupled with Deco's poor form/injuries the strikers dont get any service and as good as Messi is at dribbling and wondergoals he doesnt have the mind-set of Ronaldo who sets up goals constantly which is what seperates them in my opinion. Dont get me wrong I think Messi is the best at times but is he is going to be a 'selfish-minded' player (I mean that in the best sense possible) then the midfeilds have to do more work in setting up goals for the strikers. Maybe Nasri or Cesc is the answer?
