Barça destroyed Atletico Madrid tonight with a superb display of attacking football. If in the last two games we had to wait until injury time to seal the three points, tonight the victory was all but sewn up after just ten minutes. Marquez, Eto'o and Messi put Barça 3-0 in just eight minutes and by the half hour we were 5-1 up.
Games between these two clubs have a history of producing high scoring, incident packed games and tonight's clash was no exception. Leo Messi played a blinder and won the battle with Kun Agüero hands down, but the performance of unsung players such as Eric Abidal and Eidur Gudjohnsen was just as pleasing to see.
Pep Guardiola made four changes to the team that started against Shakhtar. Abidal, Gudjohnsen, Busquets and Messi came in in place of Toure, Keita, Henry and the injured Dani Alves, which saw our versatile captain Carles Puyol at right back and a return to the classic 4-3-3 system.
After just two minutes Iniesta won a corner on the left and Xavi's kick was headed in at the near post by Rafa Marquez. then just a minute later Messi received the ball inside the area before a clumsy challenge from Ulfalusi had the referee pointing to the spot. Samuel Eto'o took this one and sent Coupet the wrong way for Barça's second. If that seemed too good to be true, three minutes later Messi won a free kick and as Atletico tried to organize their wall Messi took a quick one which went into the empty net while Coupet stood by the post trying to wipe the egg from his face.
Atletico pulled one back in the 13th minute when a mistake from Busquets allowed Maxi Rodriguez the chance to show his class by curling a beauty past Valdés. But any chance of a comeback was soon dispelled when Eto'o controlled Xavi's pass with his chest before turning the defenders this way and that and shooting low past the hapless Coupet.
Just before the half hour Iniesta and Messi briefly swapped wings but it gave Iniesta the chance, after receiving from Xavi, of running at the defence before shooting left footed against the base of the post, fortunately some days everything goes your way, and in this case the ball rebounded sweetly to Gudjohnsen who fired into the empty net. Iniesta had another try a couple of minutes later but this time his right footed curler from the left came back out off the far post.
There was still time before half time for Gudjohnsen to come close after excellent work from Xavi, and the Messi went on a tremendous run from inside his own half which ended with him just clipping the ball wide: a great shame as it would have been one of the goals of the season. Thirty seconds later Messi got another go, but he seemed to have not got over his previous effort and the defence recovered in time.
When a game finishes 5-1 at half time it is always going to be practically impossible to see a great second half, and the game went through a dull patch. However, Guardiola brought on Thierry Henry and Bojan Krkic and the game improved for a while culminating in the goal of the night from Henry. The Frenchman began the move himself pushing the ball forward to Xavi who flicked it on to Bojan who squared to Henry who had continued his run meeting the ball with a tremendous first time shot from outside the area which flew into the net.
All the players did well tonight, with fine displays from the usual stars Messi, Eto'o, Xavi and Iniesta; it was especially pleasing that players who have received a lot of criticism such as Gudjohnsen, Abidal and Henry can tonight sleep well in the knowledge that they did a good job today. The last time we stopped for an international break we had two long weeks to think about our defeat at Numancia. This time we will have two happy weeks to think about six successive victories with this fantastic display to top it off.
Barça: Valdés 6.5, Puyol 6.5, Marquez 7, Piqué 6.5, Abidal 8; Xavi 8.5 (Keita m74, 6.5), Busquets 6.5, Gudjohnsen 7.5; Messi 9 (Bojan m69, 6), Eto'o 8 (Henry m59, 7), Iniesta 8.
Goals: m3 Marquez 1-0, m5 Eto'o (pen) 2-0, m8 Messi 3-0, m13 Maxi Rodriguez 3-1, m18 Eto'o 4-1, m28 Gudjohnsen 5-1, m74 Henry 6-1

this was simply wonderful to watch. its been a long while ive felt SO happy watching this team!!! nothing bad to say at all. nic got it spot on and i was going to comment on both abdial and gudi. when i first saw gudi's name i wasnt very happy, but he put on a pretty great performance. abidal looked to be the player lyon claimed he was. very happy with him. pray for consitency now!
truthfully everyone who started had a great game, puyol looked very good on the right and frankly this back 4 looked the best this season. i didnt realize alves was injured and thought pep made another bold and GREAT move dropping him because he has been far from good. anyhow, puyol looked solid and so enthusiastic.
but the stars were definetely xavi and messi. xavi is proving what ive been saying to people i know for years, that he is the BEST central midfielder on earth, bar NO ONE. no player has his technique, vision, touch, and pinpoint passing. and well, messi showed today he probably is the best in the world, he is complete, strong, fast, dribbling, shooting, finishing, amazing passing, and even headering seen recently. im a fan of CR too but really messi may just be in his own little one-man league.
i didnt agree with the freekick. im not in favor for these quick freekicks, i remember henry vs chelsea 4 yrs back or so. i think its unfair on the GK. anyhow, good for messi to be so alert.
i was ecstatic for henry to get that goal which was really a quality finish. hopefully he gains much confidence from it.
busquets had a decent match but really had two horrible blunders, one just before their goal and then the 2nd one directly cuased the goal. he really is a talent but if i do make one small critique, i still say yaya easily merits the start. im getting uneasy again with his constant absence.
its a perfect way to break for internationals, happy players, good spirits.
im going to sleep so well tonight. FORCA!
i think atletico had vital players missing tonite and had the right players in the wrong positions, in the twilight of the match they resorted to dirty tactics follow ups, pushings and trippings. when i switched on the match it was 3-o and thot i missed an entire half
, and i think xavi deseved more than a 8.5 he was running the show nic,, what will make a complete all smiles weekend naw is for madrid to draw or even lose their game
.
lA LIGA WE COMING 4U
BTW does anyone know why henry kisses his wrist when he scores???
the freekick was fine, soccer players should always be alert and ready instead of complaining....they should learn how to make walls during practice and not take 20 minutes fixing the wall during the game.....coupet was asleep, he doesnt get paid to do that so messi made him pay for it.
abidal was amazing today and ive always liked gudjohnsen so he didnt surprise me 2day. henry did great and i love it how messi defends as much as he attacks....i have never seen CR defend, messi can do it all.
and my god iniesta jeeez dude did u get a hair cut 1min before kickoff??
Simply amazing....Xavi on song - barca on song....what a shock horror
Brilliant!
Cannot fault anyone tonight...be interesting to see any criticisms....

eto'o didn't look too happy getting off didn't even aknowledge the crowd why the hell cant he just swalowd his big head for once in his life and be professional Uzbhekistan any1?
No player should be happy to be subbed off. As long as Eto'o actually does go off though when asked...I see no fault with it - it shows his passion and his desire to stay on....
I'll never forget GOLtv's commentator talk about Iniesta: "that man has millions of euros, he oughta have a better hair-do than that"
then mins later
"Atletico are having a bad hair day, one of Marge Simpson proportions"
blaugrana_namibia --- why would anyone want to be subbed out?? obviously he wanted to stay in and score more goals...ive seen messi subbed out and looking upset at times too, but no1 says anything because its messi which is unfair. he was subbed off against betis...and when gudjohnsen scored, he celebrated more than anyone in this world has ever celebrated before...the rest of the team was probably sleeping on the bench. goalscorers should be never satisfied and im happy etoo is like. u call him bigheaded, i call him the most confident player on the team.
Wow.....what a game!! Who would have predicted that one.....and to think I was worried about this game.
I take back every mean thing I have ever said about Abidal....he was phenomenal today, if that is how he is going to continue to play this season then we are going to have a very solid left side. He was doing everything, defending, attacking, closing down, winning balls in the air. Simply outstanding, in the first half he had Kun in his pocket and in the second half he put sinama p right in there too.... hope his haters take note.
There are so many good things to say about so many players, so im just gonna say that as a TEAM today we were unstoppable. Messi is hands down the best player in the world, Cronaldo could never do what Messi did today. He tore them apart, he created such panic whenever he touched the ball it was almost comical. Passing, dribbling, tracking back, closing down and what a free kick. I only wish he could have scored one of the goals of the season with that run. Oh well, next time maybe
See i told you Blau......just a little patience....
amazing...everything was gold...except basquets loss of possesion which led to their goal.
no other faults...except the obvious...hiarcut
BARCA!
I totally agree with the comments on Iniesta's haircut, really poor finish there.
Thanks Darren for the highlights link. I notice it didn't include the Henry goal so here is a link to that - LINK
Yes...Nic not sure why but alot of the highlights online didnt include that one...
Nic - what are the papers saying about the game? As much as I loved our performance...lets not forget it was against an Athletico with 6 players missing. Hoping now this is something we can build on.
Eto'o deserve respect hes great! i think xavi deserve FIFA player of the year
What a match!
truely great perform all round. the best match that i've seen Barca play in a long while. see what a bit of confidence can do.
I was suprised to see Gudjohnsen on the field, but he definately deserved to be there, he had a very good game. Same for Abidal, looks like he is returning to his old self from his Lyon days, now all he needs is consistency! with him playing like he did, the left hand side of the team will be much stronger. He totally kept both Atletico's strikers quiet throughtout the match.
Xavi, what is there more to say brilliant performance, totally deserves a Fifa world player of the year award. Iniesta should go to a proper hairdresser and get his hair fixed up.
At least now we can all rest easy
Forca Barca!!!
hilal: i said id be patient, though i did run out of it midweek. BUT, now that the adrenaline of last week is out, im wondering, do you really think this is a turning point??? from now on we are going to be an unstoppable force?
im not going to make that statment just yet. looking objectively, the match was over before it began. a good corner, then a rash challenge for a PK, and then a very dubious free kick, 3-0 afer 8 minutes. then xavi to etoo quickly ended their belief to make it 4-1. its not like this match was tough. the opposition was good, well the indiviudal playesr are good, but they were overwhealmed by the game, the crowd, and xavi and messi in particular. im not going claim that we are now going to win every trophy. additionally, im worried this game is just going to encouage teams to continue to continue to play SUPER defensively against us, or even more defensively (if its possible).
and abidal, lol, how can you now say "haters take notice". one good game doesnt excuse his doopy performances last season and even this year. lets have him prove himself a little more. jury is still out in my opinion.
but sure, this was a tremendous match, a big step in the right direction, particualry for belief and spirit and the press to give everyone a break and some due praise.
i loved hearing the crowd, they were SOOOOO loud. the players must have loved it. i wish etoo had dealt with his sub better, and really acknolwedged the crowd, he knew pep was trying to give henry some confidence. just his nature i suppose.
no one commented on the ref. he was SOOOO bad. making the most stupid calls of all time, i didnt know what he was talking about half the time. and im super he gave Antonion Lopez two yellow cards, what a fool. i read senna was dissing la liga refs and he is totally right, ive been bitching myself for years.
Referees in La Liga can be bad. Try watching Madrid at home and it is incredible the number of times that obvious offside situations are ignored when Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy are involved. God forbid if any defender touched either player inside the penalty area: a dive resulting in a penalty kick !!
How quickly we forget!!!
All of you Valdes haters...not even one mention.I thought he had an almost perfect game...please give him his props, they are well deserved.I am still full of glee, so words do escape me at this moment.
I need my props too since I TOLD THIS FORUM THAT SOON ENOUGH WE WILL BE SEEING ETOO SUBBED MORE OFTEN. At the time most thought of it as an innane comment, but there you go folks.Pep has taken control.
About Henry I told you exactly how he scores and that is exactly what we saw today:"Initiates, runs into open space, draws player and gets the ball for a shot at goal".This is clearly a player we can work with. Those who refused to reevaluate their positions on him might have been proven wrong today.Again, it is only one game but that is the idea.
@Blaugrana namibia
Although, I like most of your points, you should truly stop your useless, unfounded and ridiculouss attacks on etoo. I take you less seriously the more I see them. You don't take the time to back up any of the crap you put on here about him:no coherent argument, no data, nada...just negative sweeping statements about one of your best players.By the way he is your best scorer at the moment.
etoo has scored just shy of 100 goals in about 150 matches. no need to even have a debate, that speaks loudly for itself.
Eto'o may have his faults but he is very critical to Barca's success. Nobody on the current team roaster can fill his shoes. Let's just accept him as he is. He can be a pain sometimes but nobody is perfect !!
Great game from Barca!!
Abidal had his best game for us. Do I excuse the 30-40 bad games he has had, no, does he deserve to stay in Barca, no, but if he changes his form to like yesterday then let re-evalute his form untill christmas. Im glad Alves got dropped, like Abidal in mid-week it might kick start him into form.
Midfeild, Iniesta continued his fine form imo his dribbling is on par with Messi's without doubt if he had a tad more speed he would be as good, Xavi showed he an bring his Spanish form to Barca at times with a maestro's display in central midfeild. Guddy did his job and was good but Keita's lack on infuence on a game even when we were dominating shows me he either still needs a lot mroe adapting or he's not comfortable with his role.
In attack, Messi was great as usualI just thought maybe my TV had broke when I saw him miss after THAT run lol. also his miss after Iniesta hit the post really made me laugh as I couldnt beleive he missed it and Eto'sjump was funny aswell lol. Eto played well and although he looked really pissed to get taken off but shook everyones hand, celebrated with Henry with a smile and like I said competition can only be good for the team. I dont see a problem at all with him. He is essential to a 4-3-3 and 8/10 scores chances when given.
Henry scored a great goal from the centre where he likes it. One thing that REALLY impressed me tonight was Pep. He knew bringing Henry on is pointless in a 4-3-3 so he brought Messi off and put Bojan on as a 4-4-2. It paid immediate dividends and for some reason Bojan and Henry play best together. You can see Henry feels more comfortable because both like direct play and I think its better to play Henry and Bojan together rather then waste either of them on the wing. Another dilemma for Pep (although a good one!!).
Maybe not a turning point as I think Donetsk and Espanyol were much more important. This can be a spring board though and lets hope we push on form here!!
What a game. And I'm really glad Pep gives the youth a chance. (Piqué/Bojan)
Talking about haircuts, I really like Messi's.
uhhh why are we all tripping out over messi's miss? Messi made that defence ridiculing run................with a bruised thigh............... thats right, injured and still he runs circles around the defence haha
I hope the injury is just a scratch and not too serious. When he got bruised it clearly affected his game. He was not very mobile at first and just stood around alot. He was also clutching his thigh from time to time which made it evident that he is in pain.
I was hoping pep would sub him off before he gets a serious injury................then he made that run and I was like whaa?
Also see how Messi did not respond to the crowd like eto'o? Thats called having your teammates back. He tried to show he was being also being a professional and covering for samuel's hide. Yes its obvious samu was pissed off for being taken off..........so infuriated that he forgot the crowd acknowledging his top draw performance but Messi walking off with a serious demeanor when being subbed off told the camp nou crowd that he is being a professional same way as eto'o
but then xavi screwed it all up by acknowledging the crowd. Its alright though the crowd needed some love back and its xavi, he is not a professional......he is the most valuable professional.
ooh i enjoyed xavi touches .. maaan i just can't imagine the midfield without him . messi and etoo were great but not much from ineasta. it was nice 90 min to watch but i just hope we keep the hard working and not go back to the old days with the over confidence performance .. maybe Pep need to rest some players and use others , its not really cool watchng kieta -Yaya-bojna and henry don't anticipate that much
what a brilliant game...that was some sublime football we played...Definitely the best performances since the 6 nothin drubbin of Atletico 2 yrs ago coincidentally....damn...i couldn't even sleep at night that well cuz I just couldn't stop thinkin abt that emphatic win...I m so proud of our boys...
I had just got back home from a long day at work..I played the recorded game and I went to get somethin to eat for a sec, and rite after i came back it was already 1 to 0...then as i was startin to eat, it became 2-0....and the number continued to rise...damn...this is def. one of my fav. experiences as a Barca fan...The only blot is Messi shoulda scored that super run....omg..i threw my remote when he missed that...That woulda been his second best goal ever and most likely the goal of the season (at least for me)...but still, Messi, we love you..>You r the best..there is nobody like you...Cristiano Who-naldo is nothin infront of you....Xavi was majestic...He is the best center mid in the world....Etoo was phenomenal...He is the best striker in the world...Iniesta wasn't as good as the aforementioned players, but he had a fine game....and it was such a pleasant surprise to see Henry, Guddy, and Abidal play their best games in Barca shirt....god...i m just so glad that Barca is my team.....Viva Barca...
and not to be a spoilsport, but just a little word of caution..
if i remember correctly, we were in some good form last season until international break screwed everything...I think we were in some kind of winning streak and coincidentally, we beat Atletico 3 to nothing in the last game before the break...then when the players returned, we lost to Villareal 3 to 1...so I really hope the same thing doesn't happen again...
