Another Eto'o goal

I thought it would be impossible to improve on the last league home games, but Barça tonight annihilated Valladolid with yet another display of breathtaking attacking football. Four first half goals from an unstoppable Samuel Eto'o gave Barça another big half time lead, but today the second half did not drop in quality as it had against Atletico and Almeria, and goals from Eidur Gudjohnsen and Thierry Henry sealed Barça's biggest win yet under Pep Guardiola.

Valladolid had the first shot on target with a free kick in the second minute but Valdés saved easily. Gudjohnsen missed with a header and Messi had a couple of efforts before Barça took the lead in the 12th minute. Dani Alves found Eto'o with a superb pass from the right touchline and Eto'o cut inside one defender before firing low through the legs of Valadolid keeper Asenjo.

Barça's level dropped for a while but in the last twenty minutes of the first half we were quite simply outstanding. Leo Messi lead several breakaways and the times when the ball ended up at Eto'o's feet the ball ineviably ended up in the back of the net. On half an hour Messi fed Eto'o who laid off a great flick to Henry whose shot was saved but Eto'o was on hand to fire home the rebound. In the 43rd minute Messi set off on another run before playing a perfectly timed pass into Eto'o who rounded the keeper to complete his second first-half hat-trick of the season. Then a minute later Messi once more mesmerized the Valladolid defence and a defender only succeeded in deflecting the ball straight to Eto'o who had a simple finish.

I have to admit that I've lost count of Eto'o's Camp Nou goals this season but his goals per game ratio has to be one of the best ever in modern football. Three goals in the first half against Almeria followed by four first half goals today is surely unrepeatable. Leo Mesi also had a remarkable first half and is probably in the best form of his life right now. It seems the decision to allow him to play in the Olympics was the right one as Messi seems totally happy at the moment and this is reflected in his game.

Valladolid had a couple of chances early in the second half but Victor Valdés proved that his concentration is good even when we are winning easily, and the team generally continued with a very good second half performance. Eidur Gudjohnsen who was back in the starting line-up today capped a good performance with Barça's fifth after a defensive mix-up had given Henry the chance to set up him up. Then near the end Hleb played a one-two with Messi before unselfishly squaring to Henry to score the sixth.

Enjoy it while it lasts people, we won't often see football played at this level.

Barça: Valdés 7, Alves 7.5, Marquez 7.5 (Caceres m68, 6), Piqué 6, Puyol 8; Xavi 7.5, Toure 8, Gudjohnsen 7.5 (Keita m71, 6); Messi 9, Eto'o 9.5 (Hleb m75, 6.5), Henry 6.5.

Goals: m12 Eto'o 1-0, m30 Eto'o 2-0, m43 Eto'o 3-0, m44 Eto'o 4-0, m71 Gudjohnsen, m84 Henry 6-0.

Barça yellow card: m20 Toure.

Attendance: 58,276

Breathtaking... Great game everyone and what makes the victory even sweeter is that we didn't concede a goal. Love it how crowd was chanting for Eto'o and other players.

Puyol had a phenomenal contribution to Barcelona's shut out today. He made about 7 goal-saving tackles in the box and he was playing out of position on the left wing for goodness sake. Wow. He was everywhere dominating the valladolid attack. The fans were chanting his name after a crucial stop in the box late in the second half.

Alves was great on the defence too.

And wow Xavi had so many back-heel flicks through defenders that actually connected. Not often you see players pull off that move with finesse but xavi is out of this world.

If goals didnt count so much in this sport, Messi would have definitely won man of the match. Messi's playmaking ability and vision was clearly evident in this game. He just dribbled around the defence and made around 6 defence splitting passes to eto'o and henry that put them 1 v 1 with the goalie.

He had a genius play where he flicked the ball over the left back, ran towards the goal and split the ball through to henry but the french forward wasted it by popping it up and then crossing it for no one.

The fans were chanting Messi's and eto'os name too.

Also last year under rijkaard, the team was very one-dimensional with most of the posession circulating around one side of the field however this year its completely different. The blaugrana are attacking from everywhere using the whole width of the pitch. It was constant bombardment for valladolid today. Also the interchangeability of the front three is not making it easy for the defenders either.

"what happend to us tonight is gonna happen to a lot of teams this season"

almeria(5-0) malaga(4-1) valladolid(6-0)

........guess he was right

Honestly remembering back to the ridiculous number of goals scored in pre-season I thought "blah they could not really score that many against la liga teams".........but wow I am being proven wrong here

Hell if anything, the way barcelona dominated in preseason should have been an indication of guardiola's genius and foreshadowing of brilliance to come.......ofcourse that makes the most sense lol

But wow, unbelievable....

Does anybody else think that Messi is getting SO good he's using opposing players during his runs? With Eto'o's 4th goal I'm not convinced that it was an accident that it deflected off that player right to him. Messi seemed to intentionally time his touch for the deflection and it worked beautifully. Didn't he do the same thing in another game where he used an opposing player in a one-two with himself (I think it may have been against Atletico Madrid). If he keeps doing stuff like that we're going to be watching some very exciting and ridiculously creative football this season...

Yeah, I think Messi's performance was phenomenol yesterday, and Etoo - is damn goal machine! :)

@ Andrew,

Dude, sometimes I think the same thing. But then, it's just too scary to think about how good he must be if he is doing that intentionally. I swear, when I watched the replay of that goal today, it kinda looked like he meant to.

And I remember that Atletico one-two your talking about. I guess it might have been a pass to someone (maybe Eto'o?), but it seemed perfectly weighted to bounce off the other player and back to Messi. And he made the run just as if he meant for it to happen. I don't know...if he's that good...

this was a breathtaking, inspiring game of football to watch. i have rarely felt so genuiney happy watching a late night game of football on my lonesome. AMAZING. in a game of attacking genius is easy to forget the other half, but i will give them a special shout. yaya was again incredible and id back him being the best defensive mid in the world. his positioning and anticipation on where to recover the ball is ESP like and his touches and passing are excellent (besides one crazy one first half, but then second half he had a massive 70 yard cross field pass). alves too was great and looking at least worth half hte money we spent. lol. his pass to etoo for goal 1 was special. and PUYOL, oh my, he was just legendary. so many key tackles or interceptions. and how about VV people!!!! had a few very good takes from crosses and was alert the whole game.

obviously the attack needs few more plaudits. messi is for sure the best player in the world, he is just so incredibly unselfish, his passing has pinpoint precision, i was in awe of maybe the best of all time in the making. even his defensive play in the second half on the wing, when he shimmied away and passed it up field, i loved that. besides etoo finishing, he showed many his passing ability with a few great flicks and crosses. there was one player i felt had less than a good game, but tried hard. henry had a few chances put on a plate from him and missed, but ok. i loved his finish, showed his fire is back and for now thats a great start.

one thing more, id like to see where all the anti-laporta people are now???? so quick to demonize him and ask for him out, i bet you all are not so concerened about the volleyball and handball now??? having always been on his side, why dont we all here recognize what he has done and his excellent (seemingly risky) appointment of guardiola that could turn into a dynasty, and letting "the special one" go to inter and struggle to win aginst teams from cyprus.

I agree with bk and at times when I read comments like he is selfish, it makes me sad. If barca thinks messi is selfish then pls release him and send him to Manu. It’s when he holds the ball he is drawing defenders towards him and then those incredible passes ….oh! … He is like god when he runs with the ball! He is bliss to watch. When barca plays without him one can see the difference with no disrespect to the quality that barca has. Messi is surely the BEST the world has at present and I love him. He is silky and mesmerizing. Even in this game I don’t think barca would have scored more than 2 goals had messi been not playing!

Messi is hands down the BEST player in the world but I don't think he will get the FIFA award. He was out injured and Barça had a year to forget last year. Ronaldo will get the award based on his goal total and his team winning both the EPL and the CL . However, Messi can run circles around Ronaldo. There is NO comparison between Messi and the Diving One when it comes to talent , ball skills and creativity !!

what the hell stupid comment is that about barca fans calling messi selfish and then we should send him over to man united?? so ur a barca and man united fan, wow, glory hunt much? annoying

and i never said messi should win the FIFA world player of hte year award, i was just saying he actually is the best player in the world now. no matter what that award is going to and should go to CR. messi was injured a lot of last season and frankly if someone scores 42 goals and wins the double it would be ridiculous not to give it to him. however looking at the two players, messi is superior. in fact he lives in his own little world of amazing, right now nobody can match him.

The atmosphere in the Camp Nou was amazing, it was good to hear the fans chanting the names of Puyol, Messi and Eto'o - who was simply at his unstoppable best, he truely deserved his standing ovation.

Messi once again was magnificent. Valdes produced good saves to deny Valadolid in the early parts of the game.

The difference between Messi and Ronaldo LAST season was that Ronaldo was far more effective in games and was way more better as a TEAM player. Often on this blog I have pointed out how many times he has been selfish when team-mates are in much better positions.

However, I am pleased to say that Pep seems to have made that point to him. Pep knows that whatever an indiviuals talents, team success is more important then individual plaudits. Messi has, for now, become as effective as Ronaldo. We all know the two are supremely talented and I couldnt really chose between the two but as far as natural talent goes Messi pips it. He wont win FIFA World Player thing and rightly so, but if he plays like this for the majority of the season and wins something with Barca then he will definately win it next year.

As for the game, wow =D This Barca, as someone pointed out, uses all quadrents of the pitch. No one is excluded from the game and everyone is working and running for each other. Keep it up Barca and please please when Madrid visit the Nou Camp, dont beat them, destroy them!!

Ronaldo was NEVER a better team player than Messi. A player who takes all penalties and free kicks and looks to shoot first and rarely passes the ball can NOT be called a team player. He played MORE games and scored MORE goals. That is the bottom line. It has NOTHING to do with being a better player or a team player. Some Barça "fans" need to make up their minds whether they want to support Barça or stay loyal to their OTHER club !!

Etoo was unstoppable, and what can you say abt Messi?? I have been sayin this since the begininin of 06/07 season...Messi is the best player in the world without a doubt.....Cristiano is nothin in front of him...and to the ppl that said, Cristiano was more of a team player than Messi last season, go check the assists stats....and what's important is, Messi didn't even play as many games as him...

At the moment, we are def. the best team not only in La Liga but in the whole world...I don't know if anyone has noticed yet, but we not only are the highest scoring team in la liga, we are also the lowest goals concedin team (tied with Sevilla)....and we have scored 6 more goals than Los Putos, our nearest rivals...and 11 goals more than our second nearest rivals, Valencia...Kudos to the entire team..

Viva Barca...

as happy as i am at the moment...and as proud as i am of the team...there is only one thing that bothers me slightly...with all these great results and endless goals, we are still only 1 point up at the top of the ladder.

its fantastic to have this great for/against and have scored all these goals but at the end of the day, a wins a win and we only get 3 points whether we win by 6 or by 1...villareal, valencia, even madrid to a certain extent may not be winning by as great a margains as us (except valencia's romp of getafe today, not as big as ours but still a good result) but they are still getting the 3 points most weeks.

one draw, one loss and we could drop as low as fourth...its still so early, still so close. the only thing to certify our dominance will be to record wins against those aforementioned teams!

in the meantime...keep those goals coming cause i dont want this to sound like a complaint! go barca!!

@aussie barca,

i agree with the fact that we're only marginally ahead. but, given the way that some of the other teams are picking up wins versus how we are, that will catch up with them sooner or later. sure, we could go down for a little bit with a freak loss, but we are starting to develop a pattern of ruthlessness in finishing out games. we are starting to make clean sheets a habit.

sure, we should stay vigilant about the close point spread; like you said, we have some big games coming up in which we can make a dramatic impact on the standings. but if anyone should be worried, it's the teams below us...

To the people who are think ronaldo is better than king leo:

I bet the only reason people think that ronaldo is better is because he does 400 stepovers every match.

when ronaldo has no pressure and about 5 players in better positions he does 5 stepovers therefore giving the opsoition time to come and tackle him and when he does lose it he jumps on the floor.

Messi,on the other hand,is influental in the team with his jinking runs with the ball tied to his feet. He also can give the killer ball that he lacked a while ago making him the best in the world.

It is essential that Barça get better results against Valencia (WW), Villarreal (LL), Sevilla (DW) and Madrid (LL) . Barça only managed 10 points out of possible 24 points . It would be nice to beat all the four clubs at home AND get a few more points on the road. Out of the four contenders Valencia could be a threat. Madrid with Van Nistelrooy and Robben out for extended periods are irrelevant. Villarreal and Sevilla are shaky at best. If Barça can get a clear point advantage by the end of December they will be hard to catch !!
