Barça And Milan Agree Terms For Ronaldinho

Tuesday, 15 July 08, 05:56 PM · Comments (28)

At just past 11p.m. tonight Joan Laporta and AC Milan's vice-president Adriano Galliano announced they had reached an agreement for the sale of Ronaldinho Gaucho. Ronaldinho will travel to Milan in the morning to pass a medical and he will then be presented as a Milan player. The fee is said to be €21 million + €4 million for various objectives. This brings to the end the Barça career of one of the greatest players, if not the greatest ever to grace Camp Nou.

From his home debut against Sevilla in Semptember in 2003 when he scored one of the greatest goals I've ever seen, Ronnie thrilled fans with his shimmies and flicks. He was responsible for bringing Barça out of the doldrums of the Gaspart era which reached its crescendo in Paris when Barça beat Arsenal to win their second European Cup.

On the way there were two La Liga titles and two Supercopas, a dazzling two goal display in the Bernabeu that had the home fans applauding their greatest rivals, countless free-kicks that left goalkeepers standing, backheels, powerful runs that left defenders for dead and pinpoint 40 yard passes. We are fortunate enough to live in the age of youtube where most of his ball juggling, sombreros, colas de vaca, etc can be enjoyed again and again for generations to come.

It has been sad to watch his decline over the last two years when it has seemed that his partying lifestyle has been catching up with him. Reports of a drink problem may or may not be true, but it has been clear to Camp Nou regulars that he has lost his once superb physical condition. I pray he can recuperate it at his new club for the good of football fans worldwide. I cannot blame him for enjoying the good things in life. when you have the money and the fame then it is clear that there are temptations out there that many of us would find hard to resist.

For today I'd like to forget the negative side and bow down to one of the legends of the game. There were times he looked like he would be remembered as the greatest player ever. He seemed capable of inventing something new in every game. Who else has ever set up a goal with a pass using his back? Ronnie, thanks for the good times, you will never be forgotten.

Thank you Dinho for starting the Barca Revolution, you will never be forgotten. It sucks to see him leave but it was for the best interests of both parties for this move to happen. I saw him last week in houston and wore my barca #10 dinho jersey, knowing that was the last time I will ever wear it so i have been preparing myself for this day, but damn it still sucks. Dinho is the most skilled player that I have ever seen and maybe will ever see. It was a joy to watch him play for this great club every weekend and my week revolved on a countdown of how many days left until i can watch him play again. You never knew what you might see out of him and even when he did the impossible, i was never really that shocked b/c it was dinho. I first saw him play in Copa America 99 and he instantly became my favorite player after his goal vs Venezuela in that tournament (look it up please). I even bought a PSG jersey b/c he was there and was in shock when he decided to join my fav team in 03. His talent was never doubted but i guess in the end his desire was. I hope he does better in Milan than Rivaldo did (another Brazilian who left Barca in controversy). There is 1 moment that i will never forget and will tell my kids: Dinho given a standing ovation in the Bernabeu. That is something that we might never see again.

I have conflicting emotions over Ronaldinho, as my own blog's history can relate. Yes, he was a joy to watch when in form and fit. A true joy. I also liked that he always smiled in the beginning. It was a breath of fresh air to see him playing out there like he really enjoyed it. Alas, it didn't last, much as I clung to the hope he would swing back after the '06 WC. And I really did cling tightly. To the point that when I finally let go, it left me a little sad and a little bitter. Still, you're right about youtube, Nic. I watch those (or BarçaTV) and it makes me smile to watch. Such a talent. Reminds me of the phrase: youth is wasted on the young. Hopefully he'll find that happiness for the game again. Knock on wood.

Couldn't agree more, Nic.

The best thing about Ronnie was that whenever you saw him play there was a chance you'd see something you'd never seen before and likely would never see again. When you have a player like that, every match, even the most mundane, becomes a can't miss event. He made millions of people around the world -- including me-- culés. On form, he is simply irreplaceable. I will miss him greatly and wish him all the best in his quest to regain his status as the world's best player with the rossoneri.

I think that this article sums all about Barça's management. When comes to big players they don't think with their heads, instead unfortunately they do it with their egos.

Though it is sad to see him go, that pales in comparison to the pain of seeing him decline in form. No player has ever made me love the game so much, leaving me giddy as a schoolboy.

Ronnie, you will be missed, as you have been the last two seasons. Good luck, and I hope you recover your form, even if it be for someone else.

But, my allegiance will always remain with the Blaugrana. Visca Barça.

I'm feeling very sad after the official announcement. My favorite player of all times left my favorite club. I really feel like I could cry just now. I'm not going to sleep well tonight after this. :( But I'm still a Barca supporter. I think we need Hleb or Arshavin now, there is no one to play on the left side! Or maybe a winger, Silva could do well. Anyway, heads up Barca fans! It is time to rebuild the team from scratches, at least in attack! Oh, someone else comes to mind, he's attacking midfielder that could replace Deco well, Diego from Bremen, but is he too expensive?

wohooooo, the leech is gone!! enjoy UEFA cup and Milano (horrible city, not even close to what Barcelona is).

Anyway, lets not forget that Barca won titles till Deco and Etoo arrived, with this Im not denying his class, he was/is? absolutely brilliant , but that team won 2 leagues and a CL cuz of their team work.

Also, sure Ronaldinho did tons for Barca, but IMHO it was more what Barca did for him, u just gotta look at his performances with the "penta" and realize he wasnt even close to the level he showed with cules. With the blaugrana strip he always had someone covering his back (most of the times it was Deco), he was free to do anything he wanted, Etoo moving all over the place allowed him to make through passes, and so on.

Finally, its a pity they didnt sell him for 90 million 2 years ago, now Barca will have to settle with 20ish million euros.

:(

I've dreaded this day.

Ronaldinho brought me to Barcelona in 2004. Since then Messi and Eto'o also have come of age.

I can't believe he is leaving. Ronaldinho was the worlds best player, and he lived up to that recognition. Its such a shame he has to leave. I wish nothing but the best for him and i'll continue to support him in Milan..

:\

Truely an end of an era. Ronaldinho Gaucho was one of the best players to come to the Nou Camp.

~R10~ The reason why I began to follow Barca to be honest. When I had my first and only visit to Barcelona it was during the Champions league run. I recall how everyone held him in the highest regard, and he was treasured and brought so much excitement to the fans. The energy in the city as I watched the games with the followers was unbelievable and myself being a passionate californian sports fan who doesn't dish out loyalty easily and to only a few couldn't help but join in and follow....... I fell in love with the team, the city and the player. Will enjoy watching him play in series a...hopefully he can get his head on straight and finish his career with the brilliance he once displayed. It's a bitter sweet feeling.

I wish him the best

However, it's sad to see a legend leave the club in this way, but it's for the best

NO PLAYER IS BIGGER THAN THE CLUB, BUT I BELIEVE HE'S THE CLOSEST ONE TO MAKE AN EXCEPTION OF THIS RULE !!!

Don't get me wrong I won't be supporting Milan from now on, Barca is in my heart forever, but I will always adore Ronnie for his moves, he is the uncrowned King of football! He did in 2 yrs time what no player did through entire career!

The reason I'm a cule is not because of Ronaldinho or any other player (I prefer Rivaldo to Ronnie overall actually though Ronaldinho really is unique as a player). Disappointing presidents like Laporta or inept football directors like Txiki won't have me looking for other clubs. I'm a FCB supporter because of what the club epitomizes: technical excellence and attractive play. I don't include winning, though it should go without saying. For me, winning is a natural result of the earlier stated qualities. We saw that with Spain in Euro2008 as well. I'm just not a fan of winning for winning's sake. It allows too many negative aspects of football, both in terms of tactics and mentality. Remember, before Ronaldinho came to Barcelona he was more or less off the 'map' in Paris, labeled as very gifted but of questionable commitment. It was only with The Catalan club's philosophy, caliber of players, and coaching that the Brazilian excelled, before he returned to his former state of 'leisurely activity'. FC Barcelona is bigger than any player, any president, or any group of supporters. It represents excellence matched with flair and creativity, and always has. These traits have gotten it into political trouble many times in its history (mostly with Franco, but not always), but no matter. This will never change. Artists can be infuriating sometimes, but that is often the smallest price to pay for the sheer excellence of their work in the proper environment. FCB is such an environment. Força Barça.

Very good commentary. I can feel your emotion Nic. Ronnie , Ronnie, Ronnie...I am sad to see you go but I am sure that we will hear of you again. Now, you have something to play for...prove the world wrong!!! I pity the Calcio keepers and defenders next year. Can you imagine, Pato,Kaka and Ronnie on the same team week after week...joder!!! fireworks are bound to brighten the skies over Milan. Can't wait to watch some beautiful football!!!

Does this mean that we're getting Adebayor? Anyone!!!

Ronaldinho is a great talent and did great great things for Barca, but I, for one, am glad to be done with this soap opera. I am looking forward to seeing who steps up and pounds the ball into the back of the net for us this year.

It is very sad to part ways with Dinho. He has been the heart and soul of Barcelona for the past five seasons. When he was on fire Barca was on fire. When he was off form Barca did not do well. The records speak for themself. Personaly I think it is a grave mistake to sell a player like Ronaldinho. I await the day that Laporta will leave his position. I think he has over stayed in his post. Being off form is part and parcel of sport any sport. That does not mean that a player has to be discarded.
Ronaldinho is a special player. I never saw Pele play except on the videos. I only saw Maradona when he was about to finish his career. So in my lifetime there has only been one king of soccer, Ronaldinho!!!

I remember the goal his scored to David Seaman in the World Cup. From than on I was hooked. He than came to Barcelona. Playing every game with a smile. Passing team mates while looking the other way. Every game that I watched when he was playing was special. My heart is realy sore right now. Milan is my Italian team so I will still chear for Dinho there. But to me Ronaldinho belongs to Barca. Its the powers that be that have caused his departure. Going public and telling people that you are selling Ronaldinho. How do you sell the god of soccer?

In closing I just want to say thanks Ronaldinho for the things you did for Barcelona. You revolutionalised the game. Thanks for the lovely smile that you showed. Till the very end you had that smile. Even though some of us choose to forget. To me you are the best there is. There is no best player in the world other than you. You are in good hands with Carlito. He will make sure that you re-discover your form and claim back all you crowns. I still can't get over the fact that you are no longer a Barca player. The pain is just too much. But that is what we have to go through as fans.

You are the best No.10 in the wolrd. You are the best player ever that has played for Barcelona!! I salute!! Hail The King of Soccer!

I'm delighted that there are other Barca fans who still regard R10 as the best player in the world, even now he's gone to Milan. I absolutely agree with everything Mfisorie said and hope that his very emotional and beautifully written post will be the closure on this topic :-)
