Barça's Possible Champions League Opponents: Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter, Lyon.

Wednesday, 10 December 08, 05:25 PM · Comments (23)

Yet another Barça goal celebration

Given that three Spanish teams finished second in their respective groups, there are only four possible rivals for Barça in the last 16 of the Champions League. The draw which will be made at 12.00 CET on December 19th will see Barça paired with one of Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Lyon. What is sure is that the first leg on 24/25 February will be played at home with the return game at Camp Nou on 10/11 March. There is a certain added interest whichever team we play: if it's Arsenal we'll be up against Cesc Fabregas, and Henry, Hleb and Sylvinho could face their old team; if it's Chelsea we could see a return of Deco to Camp Nou; Inter Milan are managed by Jose Mourinho who for many people was the preferred choice to take over from Frank Rijkaard, while Lyon have Karim Benzema in their team who has often been linked with a possible move to Barça, and also Eric Abidal will be up against his ex-club.

Personally, I fancy Arsenal who are not so strong this year, or if not then Lyon. What about you? Who would you like to see us paired against?

damn..it's gonna be a great game I know for sure...but at the same time, it's gonna be a very difficult one as well...i m already gettin scared..No matter who we face, it's gonna be a tough match....Lyon, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Inter are all great teams...It's not taht if we face Lyon or Arsenal, it's gonna be any easier...Arsenal are turnin it against big teams this season...they beat Chelsea and Manchester...and Lyon is always a threat...Inter aren't playin taht well but they are gettin the results, so they are a threat also...and finally, Chelsea...Chelsea are always tough to break down....but anyways, if we play like the way we have been playin this season so far, there's no way any team can beat us...Viva Barca...

Nic - it's a tough draw for us!!!

Personally, in order, I'd like us to get:

Lyon, Inter, Arsenal, Chelsea.

Lyon I don't think have the quality to match us at all. Inter I think will struggle against us as well. Arsenal, albeit weak this season, will test us a bit due to English teams being very good on the set pieces & I am always wary of a "weakened side".

Chelsea match up against us VERY well & again, will give us some trouble on set pieces and their combative style of play.

Having said all of this, I don't think currently any team would be able to stop us. The most important thing is - besides staying healthy, is that we actually put a few goals away at home. We NEED to make the first leg count, and sometimes I get frustrated playing sexy football and only scoring 1 or 2. We need to kill the tie off before it even begins.

Lets also not forget Iniesta will be back soon for us :). Nic - any news on his recovery?

Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Lyon

prefer we face (in the order of) : lyon, arsenal, inter, or chelsea.
realistically speaking we probably get one of the latter three

on the other hand i want Real vs. Man U, that be interesting, c.ron finally in Bernabeu :P

you heard it here first. We're going to draw Chelsea and Man U are going to draw Real Madrid.

The CL is fixed and this will prove it.

I'm being a sensationalist, but I think it's a strong possibility because of our CL past with Chelsea and they'll want revenge after Ronaldinho and Barca dismantled them a few years ago. I also would love to see Xavi outplay Deco.

any team we face in the knockout stages is going to be tough! luck plays alot of part in the champs league from this phase onwards.

whoever we face, i just hope the team is fully fit with all the important players available.

MUFC v Real Madrid would be nice. i don't like both teams and it would be great watching them have a go at each other esp with the recent calderon/ferguson spat. i think we're going to end up meeting Chelsea. somehow we're always tied with them!

fixed you say? perhaps...

Darren - the latest on Iniesta is that he is back to training with the team. No mention on when his likely return to playing will be, I imagine he has a chance to make it for the Villarreal game

I would rather see Barça paired with Lyon . However, Barça are capable of beating any club . Although Chelsea and Inter Milan are on the top of their perspective leagues , they did NOT look good in their CL games so far and that is why they were unable to win their groups. So be prepared for ugly strategies and dirty tactics if we face them. Arsenal are similar to Barça . They like to hold on to the ball but, let me tell you something; when it comes to ball possession NOBODY can outdo Barça . While we are having this discussion , I'm absolutely certain that ALL the three possible opponents are praying to be paired with any other opponent EXCEPT Barça . So, I think Arsenal,Lyon, Chelsea and Inter Milan should be more worried than Barça .

I would like to face Inter next, beause each game in Europe is tough no matter who you face. Sooner or later we'll have to come up against the big teams, besides Inter are playing quite poorly. Beating big teams will give the squad more confidence and drive - fuelling their ambition. I'd also like Barca to face Chelsea and knock them out and show them who the best is but my preferred opposition is Inter - Zanetti is scared of facing Barca :)

RM vs Man Utd would be great considering the fergie-calderon fued and CRonaldo finaly going to bernabeu =D

blaugrana namibia i always look forward 2 ur comment.jus one question, why do u want arsenal for barca, im thinking they are not a formidable opponent for barca at this stage.

u def have to go for lyon. that team isnt nearly as good as previous years and the french league is no where near the quality of english or spanish league. otherwise, arsenal look weak this year and i think we will beat them over two legs. inter next, then chelsea.

lyon, arsenal, inter, chelsea. for sure.

F**K it....I want Chelsea! Bring them on! We can take them and I can guarantee they would be more scared of us then we are of them. I watch them every week and while they are certainly still a top team they are nowhere near the Chelsea we faced and beat a few years ago. Plus we would have the advantage of playing the 2nd leg at home which would give us a huge boost. I want us to face and beat as many EPL teams as possible. I live in the UK and I am so sick and tired about hearing the constant mess regarding premier league dominance in Europe. I want us to show them who are the best and to put them back in their place! Nothing would make me happier than meeting Man utd again at some point and Liverpool too. They are both due a beating from us.....

Ir eally want to draw lyon or arsenal. Mostly because i wnt us to show benzema which team he should come to next seson and also the same with fabregas who recently stated that he wants to return to spain in the near future. Chelsea or inter would be good, but if i had a choice, i would pick Man U.

i like the spirit hilal, i agree with u. chelsea are not as good as yrs before, and right now there isnt one english team anywhere near our level, especially liverpool. thing u got to consider is these games will only be in late feb. and teams usually get stronger, united for sure does. so comparing teams right now only gets us so far. but i do love the optimism
