Champions League Draw: Lyon Vs Barça

Friday, 19 December 08, 04:35 AM · Comments (18)

Barça- Lyon 2007

Barça have been drawn against Olympique Lyon in the last 16 of this season's Champions League. This was probably the easiest of the possible opponents, however, it is also a draw that will produce less interest than a game against Arsenal, Chelsea or Inter Milan. Barça met Lyon in the group stage of last season's Champions League, in the first match at Camp Nou Barça won 3-0 (click here for this blog's report on that game), then the return in Lyon was a 2-2 draw (click here).

Most interest for the game will be focused on Karim Benzema who has been on the agenda of most big clubs in Europe as a possible signing. However, Lyon also have dangerous players in free-kick specialist Juninho and right winger Govou. The tie will also be special for Eric Abidal who will again be up against his ex-team mates having signed for Barça from Lyon in the summer of 2007.

There are some cracking ties in the other games such as Chelsea-Juventus, Real Madrid-Liverpool and Inter-Man United. Good for us I suppose as some of the bigger teams will get knocked out.

The full draw is as follows:

Chelsea v Juventus
Villarreal v Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon v Bayern Munich
Atletico Madrid v Porto
Lyon v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Liverpool
Arsenal v Roma
Inter Milan v Manchester United

The first legs will be played on Feb 24/25, the second legs on Mar 10/11.

I couldn't agree with you more ,nic. This is the best draw we could get.
My prediction for the final eight:
Barça - Juventus -Villarreal - Bayern Munich - Atletico Madrid - Liverpool - Roma - Manchester United . Madrid ? Of course not. They don't belong !!

The fact that other big teams were drawn against each other is only good for us if we get past Lyon. It will be difficult task but I believe we are up to it.

This is what the Chelsea secretary had to say, regarding his team's draw against juventus:

"Any team at this stage of the competition is obviously quality but it could have been a lot worse, maybe Barcelona"

Makes me think this is not so much a lucky draw for us, but a lucky one for the rest of these teams

I think its a good draw for Barca, Arsenal seem to raise their game against the big teams and the others were big teams which is best to avoid now.

Cant wait for United-Inter and RM-Liverpool!

i don't see chelsea-juve as a big game cause really chelsea are the most boring team to watch this season, and lyon i am really tired of them now, another bore draw by UEFA once again, i am really dissapointed there arent any mouth watering draws, most you can predict who might go through

Damn I really wanted Chelsea!!! I know this will prob be an "easier" draw for us but to be honest I dont want it to be easy. We can beat anyone, and I am sick and tired of hearing the arguament that we have yet to face a top European team. People here in the UK do not see Valencia, Sevilla or even Real (in current form) as top European teams and they all think that Liverpool, Man utd or Chelsea could beat us with ease. I want to take those words and shove it right up their arses. Especially Chelsea fans who seem to have this ridiculous excuse that whenevr they lose to us they only have 10 men. I really wanted Chlesea, oh well i guess its not to be yet. I just hope we get an English team besides Arsenal next. Any team will do, I just want to thrash them!!! We owe all of them a beating. My best scenario would be to face all 3, and beat them all =D

In addition to Benzema , Lyon may have the best free kick specialist in the world in Juninho . I'm not talking about Mickey Mouse 20- meter variety. Juninho is the real deal. I remember him scoring a free kick from 40+ meters against us last year in the CL . When it comes to organizing his wall , Valdes is really clueless. Maybe we should just have a defender or two in the goal when defending free kicks !!

Hilal,
If Barça face an EPL club in the next round , I can see the same old strategy . With the exception of Arsenal , every club will defend with 8-9 players and rely on counter attacks and luck to beat us. The all mighty Manchester United were on their heels with 8-9 players defending non stop barrages of Barça attacks and were happy to have a mere 35% ball possision. The year before Liverpool did the same thing . So we have to be ready for that. I'm sure both Chelsea and Arsenal are relieved that they avoided Barça this round .

well said fcb-holland all have 2 do is word on the counter attacks and we shall do just fine, but that is for when we meet them.First is Lyon and i must say i think the draw is some what easy for a team with our quality....no disrespect to Lyon, but come.I personal hate madrid but will choose them over any english club, and im tired, really tired of hearing about the dominance of these f##king english clubs.

the others were lucky, not barca, we are ready to test ourselves against anybody

Arsenal might raise their game against premiership opposition but against they'll be like any other team, really can't wait to see Manu- inter,
I hope this is our year

Funny the way all the smaller teams got to face each other

it was def our best possible outcome, and hilal, i understand ur frustrations. most people i know all watch and support the premier league and they are also narrow minded and think its the best league hands down, despite u and i and others knowing that chelsea, united, liverpool, AND arsenal are all playing quite averagely and inconsistently. but remember man, things in 2 months change a lot, united in particular have been one to come strong after xmas. so really, u have to be happy we get lyon now as we are bound to get a big team sooner rather than later.

overall i really hope the english clubs get knocked out either this round or the next because i am damn sick of them thinking they are so much more superior to everyone else.

You have to feel sorry for Lyon . An adviser to the French club's president was not too happy to have drawn Barça . He sounded as if he has already thrown the towel . He said , " If we were eliminated , that should help us concentrate on winning the French title " !!

You have to choose BARCA...against Lyon, they r a physical side but not quite enough to overcome skills of Iniesta,MESSI,Eto....As usual Barca r the favourites to win the CL CAUSE the players they have..and i believe that "LUCK" i may even say "SUPREME LUCK" is ther with English clubs..Chelsea,Man Utd,Liverpool were able to beat Barca just because of that...I dont think United deserved to go through last season in semis
