Champions League Preview: Manchester United-Barcelona

Monday, 28 April 08, 07:58 PM · Comments (57)

Barça go into tomorrow night's semi final second leg with Man Utd knowing that a defeat will mean the end of another trophyless season. However, a win or a score draw will see us through to the final in Moscow on May 21 with a golden opportunity to win the third European Cup in our history and the second of Frank Rijkaard's time as coach.

I have heard some Barça fans say that it would be better to lose as that would mean we would definitely have to make changes in summer. I have to say that whether we win the Champions League or not there are already big changes being planned. Rijkaard could just as easily leave even if he does make history by becoming the first Barça coach to win the trophy twice, and as for the players I don't think any of them that are likely to leave this summer can change anything now. So it is time to get behind the team 100% and hopefully we can see a historic performance at Old Trafford.

Rooney and Vidic were both taken off injured in Saturday's defeat at Chelsea but of the two I imagine Vidic will start and Rooney probably won't. Reports from England say he got a whack on the hip but it looked more like a groin problem to me. I'll be surprised if he makes it. Sir Alex Ferguson has declared that it will be a different game at Old Trafford and it is difficult to imagine United playing so defensively. Barça don't know how to change their style so it should be a more open match and we will surely see some goals.

According to the BBC Toure Yaya is a doubt with an ankle injury although I could find no mention of this in the Spanish press. Puyol will replace the suspended Marquez in defence, but the question that concerns me most is whether Thierry Henry plays. He may still be highly respected in England, and he may also have experience of playing at Old Trafford, but I think it would be a big mistake for him to start. If Messi cannot last for 90 minutes then by all means bring Henry on as a substitute. I strongly feel that Rijkaard should use the same players as in the first game with Iniesta further forward and Deco and Xavi in midfield. If Henry plays it would mean one of the three pequeños would have to sit out.

This is the type of game we all live to see. Let's hope we see 90 minutes of non-stop excitement, and let's all pray that the luck is with us. Bring it on!

Barça's 18-man squad: Valdés, Pinto, Zambrotta, Thuram, Puyol, Milito, Abidal, Sylvinho, Edmilson, Toure, Xavi, Deco, Gudjohnsen, Iniesta, Messi, Bojan, Eto'o, Henry.

Possible starting XIs:

Man Utd: Van Der Sar; Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Hargreaves, Carrick, Scholes, Park; Ronaldo, Tevez.

Barça: Valdés; Zambrotta, Puyol, Milito, Abidal; Xavi, Toure, Deco; Messi, Eto'o, Iniesta.

My Prediction: Man Utd 2 Barça 2

The only mistake there was is that Frank was the coaching Barca. Layi your answer i think he feared he might score goal ( God Forbid). Any way Fans just go to sleep and wait for the sun to rise tomorrow ! There is not point for crying over spilled milk. I know i seem like a bad fan at the moment but i actually expected this. Under Frank I expected every thing. Better luck when Frank leaves.

Mourinho cant come to Barca, his way of understanding footie is way different than Barcas philosophy.

I think Pellegrini from Villareal would be a good call, also Laudrup.

About who to sign, I cant really think of any other strikers apart from David Villa or Diego Milito. We need at least 2 fullbacks and a centre back, 2 midfielders would be nice (if possible a left footed one and other of the likes of Gerrard or Lampard, with this i mean someone who can do some dirty work and still pass the ball and score from outside the box). In the superstars department.... imho theres nobody out there, so Barca should c that Messi fully recovers.

Barca need to play as a team... that is the only thing that differs from what Real have at the moment, they dont have 1/4th of the talent we possess, but, somehow, the team just cannot deliver as a team.... My best wishes and good luck...

Thanks Man...Stakes are low but it sure will be nice to rain on RM's parade. I need "something" to hold on to for the long hot summer months ahead. Jeez man, can you imagine the "nut case" of a Real Madrid fan and Barcelona hater I have at home running circles around me and cheering on the "cheatin', lying, fabricating lil" *&^%%$ called Ronaldo...Jeez man I need a drink!!!
I once teased you of wanting to commit suicide but I think I was simply talking about myself..joder!!!

My prediction is 1-2 Barca.

Barca will score first, then Man United, then controversy, then Barca win in last few minutes on counter-attack.

My prediction is Messi, Tevez, Henry scoring. In that order. And I am correct all of you owe me a drink (of OJ as I dont drink alchol :) )

As for Nic, I agree - change is obviously coming. Ronnie will leave, maybe Gio on loan and Frank sadly too. They are the most obvious ones.

FOR NOW THOUGH, everyone get behind the team and push them tomward the final!!

Forca Barca!!

ps is ANYONE from here going as I seem to be the only lol :)

I think a loss by Barca will only hasten Franks departure and I think a lot of people want to see that. It was more certain that those players rumored to be leaving like Ronnie, Deco, Zambrotta, Marquez(?) will probably be leaving regardless of the outcome tomorrow.

3-1 Man U.

Man united is a good team and that one obstacle between Barcelona and Moscow. Barcelona has to be more fierce than a pack of hungry greyhounds let loose. Both clubs, prestigious and dignified in the history of football, are certain to attack with the back of the net in their minds. This tie has always had attractive football with buckets of goal. Hopefully, this history echoes and we witness a text book champions league match up. I feel confident of Barcelona’s chances. The semi-final tomorrow could possibly be one of the highlights of champions league history. Its do or die right here.

That made me laugh! To be fair, Ole Gunner Solsjkear will probably score our winner in the 93rd minute!

We only lose to 'lower' sides at Old Trafford! Man City, Portsmouth, Coventry.. all this season. However, we've beaten Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Lyon, Roma (twice)...

If Manchester United don't get to the final this year we'll never do it. We seem to have the semi-final hoodoo every time we get there!

If Manchester United win, it will be with out Barcelona scoring - so let's hope FCB keep it up!

Good Luck.

all i want is a performance with obvious desire, urgency, and love for the game and club. thats it. id love to go through but the performance is more important in my eyes. im worried though. we cant score and we concede. terrible combo. in the last month, all competitions (8 games) we scored only 5 goals, and havnet scored in the last 3. thats horrendous. and now we have to face a very solid defense at united. but, time to forget the pain and mess of the last season, time to believe again.

MESSI !!! MESSI !!! MESSI !!! Can't take it watching Sir Alex whine and complain, Ronaldo guarantee goals and make excuses, I've not felt good about our guys for ages, but woke up today with a good feeling, I'm one of the people who has been guilty of saying I had hoped we would lose to guarantee change, but that went right out the window a week ago, as I could never in my heart root against my club, OK, today is such a wild card, I'm going with my Heart Barca 3-2, Messi tears them up in a very tough game in a very tough atmosphere, Man U comes to play this week & shows their class, Ronaldo probably does score (Unfortunately), My greatest fear is if we do advance that either Yaya or Leo pick up an OLd Trafford Special Yellow card and have to miss the final..... I realised, you only get so many chances to get this close to a final, you can't waste any of them.... This is the big prize.... if we don't show up and get bounced unceremoniously then that is all for us.... Please guys!!!!! Goals by MESSI!!!!! Iniesta & yes Titi Henry....... Win this one & Moscow and Frank goes out a Legend, amazing......

He used his excuses in the last league game that he was resting all the players even the one on the pitch for tonight. Don't you guys get me wrong winning the CL is way better than Frank leaving the Camp Nou, It's that I have been disappointed time and time again I just hope this time I'm surprised by a great win.

We will tie this game. Barcelona is playing with a bit more urgency and seems as though everybody wants to score. I think Thierry Henry will definitely make a difference in this game. Frank should take out Abidal, move Milito outside, havae Yaya drop back and cover in the middle with Puyol, add another striker (ie: Thierry Henry), have iniesta play between Xavi and the offense. I think we will not only tie but we might aactually win this game. This Man U. team is actually not that great. For a team playing at home the are giving up the ball very easily and can't seem to string 10 solid passes together. After 1 and half games, I truly think that this is a team we can get passed.

Barcelona cant score, next season they really need a new pair of strikers.

Also, many players have to go, Abidal is a joke, seriously, what happened to the guy that marveled us at Lyon? Henry, Ronaldinho, Marquez, Edmilson, Guddy, even Etoo if they pay a nice amount of money.

About the game.... why the hell did Rijkaard took out Iniesta? UNBELIVABLE.... Apart from that, cant really complain, Barca outplayed MU, thing is, cules lack goal, if not, history would be different.

@ Winterhunt

My friend, I think this is time for the changes you called for plus the following:

OUT: Frank, Henry, Zambrotta,Abidal,Thuram,Gudjohnsen

IN: Jose, Hleb(maybe),Cesc, Garay,Lahm,Alves, maybe even Karim Benzima(he is young and might fit well in our system of play, plus he is more skilled than Eto'o and Henry Combined) so far...we need a sure striker!

To put it in perspective, this might actually be a blessing in disguise. I still hope that we trounce Real on May 7th. I am going across the Atlantic to witness that in person...Jeez...the luck of the Catalan really deserted us today!

We need fresh faces, fresh play, fresh goal scoring abilities, and fresh management. Rijkaard thank you for your time but seriously its all over now and its time to bow out. Mourinho is coming i hope, and for those of you who label his style "boring" and defensive, please watch some videos of his Porto team that won the champions league, Deco was there and they played beautiful football. He just needs talented players to work with, not John terry and company. Anyway hopefully we will see a new and much better barca next season..

Max, Mourinhos teams played good defensive football and were really good at counter, also, im pretty sure they did have some really good matches with nice plays and all, BUT , Barca cant play this kind of football cuz they understand that the best way of defending is having the ball, creating spaces by moving the ball fast and make the other team lose their positions in order to score... if he could adapt to this, I would be happy if he came, if he is going to change everything in order to fit in.... NO THANKS.

Messi is by far the best player in the world, thing is, hes been injured... if not, nobody would be talking about Ronaldo (who imho is quality but aint at Lionels level).

I really felt like we would win this morning, but really it was the same thing again..... funny coincidence, right after the game the first commercial was Jose Mourinho in an ad for Addidas with Messi on this bus and Mourinho says "My name is Jose Mourinho, and I am a football coach. I go where I am needed"..... I really hope that was a sign..... Off to sulk for a while..... Sorry that the Classico doesn't have higher stakes for you, my man, but have fun anyway..... Maybe/hopefully this will bring about the wholesale changes we both want..... It is sad to have so much talent and so little to show for it......
