Copa Del Rey Draw: Atletico Madrid - Barça

Monday, 01 December 08, 10:41 AM · Comments (16)

Samuel Eto'o during Barça's 6-1 win against Atletico in October

The draw for the Copa del Rey was made today and Barça have been given a difficult task of playing Atletico Madrid in the last 16. The first game will take place at the Vicente Calderon stadium on January 7th with the return game at Camp Nou on January 14th. The last game between the two clubs ended in a 6-1 home victory for Barça at the start of October.

The draw was also made for the quarter finals and the semi finals. If Barça beat Atletico there is a big chance of a derby match against Espanyol in the quarter finals as Barça will face the winner of Espanyol - Poli Ejido, the first game would be away on January 21st with the return at Camp Nou on 28th January. In a possible semi final we would play whoever gets through out of Real Union, Betis, Mallorca and Almeria, the first game this time being at Camp Nou on February 4th with the return game on March 4th. The final this year will be played on May 13th.

Dates may vary a day either way depending on the TV coverage.

The full draw is as follows:

Osasuna - Athletic Bilbao

Sporting - Valladolid

Racing - Valencia

Sevilla - Deportivo

Poli Ejido - Espanyol

Atletico Madrid - Barcelona

Real Union - Betis

Mallorca - Almeria

I agree with layibiyi . Barça should try to win the Copa and all other competitions as well . When it comes to titles, the more the better !!

I think it would be great if we won this, too. After all, it is a competition we've won more than Real Madrid (maybe that's why they pretend it's not important). It would be good to extend our lead in terms of overall victories.

Giving our best for all competitions is always what we should do......however i personally think the squad lacks depth upfront......besides Eto and Messi, Henry is still not very convincing to me....I seriously think we need a young and good striker who could be highly dependable in getting the goals. Here's a serious candidate.... anyone heard of LAVEZZI frm Napoli. He's just 22 and he has been very very very convincing all season.... i'm sure he'll come cheap at the current moment. a bid below 22 m could settle the deal. If we groom him up he could be our mini Messi for sure.... Blistering pace he has and quite good control and balance...

I'd really like to see Barca winning this competition seeing as though we last won it 10 yrs ago :( .

But that being said, Atletico will be looking for revenge following the drubbing they received earlier in the season. So for this reason I think it will be a tough game.

MikeM:
I agree Atletico will try to redeem themselves after the embarassing defeat at the hands of Barça earlier in the season . In addition to Atletico , Barça will have to face Espanol, and the winner of Valencia/ Sevilla . So winning the Copa is not going to be a walk in the park afterall !!

@chris, u play too much football manager, we cant hav all d players

i even prefer the cup when our draws are tough so we can test our squad to the limit not at the expense of d leagie and UCL though

I'm quoting Lavezzi as he has quite and extraordinary talent. He is the reason i watch all games concerning Napoli. He would be a great adition to our strikeforce.

Chris:
I think if BOTH Messi and Etoó are out for a month or two, Barça's chances of winning anything are greatly diminished . Messi is irreplaceable for his creativity and scoring ability . We don't have a reliable back up for Etoó . Bojan is still too young and Henry needs astronomical chances opportunities to score a few goals and that is not going to cut it !!

@chris
dont u knw everybody will like to hav lavezzi as a backup in case eto or messi gets injured. . . but how easy do u think that will be, do u think lavezzi will like to come and do backup for eto or messi, do u think barca will want to spend 20million on a backup player. . . dnt get me wrong, i'll like to hav lavezzi but its not realistic for now

the goals are flying in, but we are still a bit prone at the back to mistakes. Either way its exciting to watch, and I wouldn't dream of supprting any other team in the world, including any of the English ones. My local team is Wolves, top in the Championship at the moment, but I have to say that this team even beats Rikyaards best, and I am sure will be compared to the days of Cruyffs dream team if they pull off the Champions League and Liga double. The Copa is just a bonus if Barca get that aswell. I run a team of Youngsters and always urge them to watch Barca as a lesson in the beautiful game!!

Chris - This Lavezzi that you talk of?

The comment made by Layibiyi is dead right. The talent that they already have will ensure that they do't need a back up player. 20 million of anyones money is too much just to have a player sitting waiting for the others to get injured.

I would like to see midfielders aswell as strikers this strong. Etoo is the first choice on the team sheet at moment, along with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Valdes. Other places are interchangeable all round, and this shows a good strength in depth. What do you think?
