Watching the Austria-Germany game this evening I got to trying to remember which Germans or Austrians have ever played for Barça. The only Germans I could think of were Bernd Schuster who I won't say any more about, and goalkeeper Robert Enke who made four appearances for Barça in 2002/3. As for Austrians I can only think of the great Hans Krankl who arrived in Barcelona in 1978 as Johan Cruyff's replacement.
Krankl was pichichi with 29 goals in his first season at the club and he also played in the historic European Cup Winners Cup Final against Fortuna Dusseldorf which Barça won 4-3 after extra time. If you've never seen the goals from that game watch them here. Krankl scores Barça's fourth.
While looking for stuff on Krankl I was lucky enough to come across this excellent link to some of the worst football related pop records in history. Check out Krankl singing the wonderfully titled "Ohne ball'n und ohne netz" and if you are feeling really masochistic check out Johan Cruyff's "Oie oei oei"
As for the football today it was pretty poor stuff. The Germans went through 1-0 with the first free kick goal of the tournament from Michael Ballack. Mario Gomez missed an open goal early on, and Spanish referee Mejuto Gonzalez sent off both coaches for a reason that I couldn't work out. Any help anyone? Germany held on as the Austrians tried to get forward in the second half but quite frankly they lacked the class to pose a serious threat. In the other game Croatia maintained their 100% record, beating Poland 1-0 thanks to a goal by Klasnic. The Germans now face Portugal in the quarter final and Croatia will play Turkey.

Krankl was featured in a profile on Barca TV which ran last week in the U.S. The profile included some footage of his band doing injustice to the Beatles. I'm not sure the original air date of the footage, but he also expressed a sincere desire to put down the mic and return to Barca as manager after Frank. I guess he'll have to to stick to music. Still, a Barca legend no doubt.
