A magnificent second half display from the Spanish team blew away Russia by three goals to nil and Spain must now be fancied to beat Germany in Sunday's final. Barça's Xavi Hernandez put Spain on the road to victory when he met Iniesta's cross to side foot the ball under the Russian keeper.
In the first half the Spanish defence led by a superb Carles Puyol kept Pavlyuchenko and Barça target Andrei Arshavin pretty quiet, and when Pavlyuchenko did get a shot in Casillas brilliantly got his fingertips to the ball to turn it round the post. Spain had to reorganise after David Villa was forced to come off injured in the 34th minute, but the readjustment worked well for Spain with Cesc Fabregas coming on to play a free role in midfield behind Fernando Torres.
Spain got the breakthrough five minutes into the second half when Iniesta's cross found Xavi who had made a great run into the box to score. After the goal came the exhibition. With Iniesta, Xavi and Fabregas playing some delightful passing football the Russians were left chasing shadows. Fabregas set up the second for sub Dani Güiza and the third for David Silva as Spain cruised to their first final since 1984.
Anyone want to jump off the Arshavin bandwagon? ;-)
LINK Does anyone know if this is on Saturday 28th June also at what time?
d rate spain churn out this creative midfielders is alarmin
i feel silva played well today, he wouldnt be a bad buy
arshavin: not so sure about his specific position.he's a good player but cant judge him just based on this tournament only, about the match: in modern football, it is extremely hard for a player under d microscope in a not so excellent team playin against a far better team to make the expected impact
i know arshavin is the central playmaker for russia just as messi is for argentina and the prospect of having him on the left and messi on the right looks quite interesting however I'd prefer it if Barcelona still try to get Silva first.
He has put up consistent performances in all the games he has played in and that tells you alot. This fellow is pure class and much younger than arshavin so there is still lots of time to further develop into a complete player
Is Barcelona still trying to acquire Silva?
i admire arshavin a great deal but i think silva would be a more sensible acquisition. at least silva has been tried and tested in the la liga and has shown us he is effective with the likes of xavi and iniesta.
brilliant game last night. spain should play with a lone striker upfront. cesc-xavi-iniesta were just awesome.
I am still on the Arshavin bandwagon. I thought Russian Midfield was the major reason Arshavin and Pavylchenko never came good. The service was awful, actually there was no service. David Silva had a great game, but is acquiring him a necessity? Where are we going to play him. With Toure and Keita both in squad we have to go in with a lone striker for including Silva in the squad. Then where Messi will play? Will he be the lone striker? I don't think so?
Silva will play on the opposite side of Messi. Barcelona is still in search for a fellow to replace ronaldinho and play on the left wing.
I read that both Ronaldinho and Etoó are dropping hints that they want to stay.Any truth to that?
Adebeyor says he is staying at Arsenal............. BEST NEWS I HAVE HEARD ALL DAY
LINK
Ronaldinho will stay. Apparently Pep challenged Ronnie to recapture his form. That to me is a very big step.
@ Arshavin lovers - He came up against a top team and he was crap. I know he played the Dutch well but they were so poor that night that of course he was going to look good. He is a flash in the pan player and I hope Barca dont get him nor Arsenal for that fact. He is good for the UEFA cup, playing in an average team - keep him there :)
As for Barca, they get more confusing every day. We cant do an 'Henry' again - by that I mean Barcelona can't sign another player for the sake of it. We need to sign a player that will fit into the manager's system. If Pep is playing a 4-3-3 then we need two wingers and a striker. Henry as the striker, and Messi as the right winger. That leaves the left berth free with the excellent David Silva as many peoples, and mine's, first choice. He is a natural winger, good crosser, technical and has very good vision.
If Pep wants a 4-4-2 then the transfer targets change aswell. If we do change to a 4-4-2 then I beleive with the current squad, including the signings, we will have a diamond in midfeild. Toure as DM, Xavi/Keita and Iniesta CM and Messi AMC. However it leaves only Henry and Bojan upfront - the former is injury prone and Bojan is not ready for 50 games a season. We would need an out and out Centre forward which could be Adebayor/Trezeguet/Ibrahimovic or better then all of them, Sameul Eto'o.
In my opinion we should switch to 4-4-2. Messi's creativity is stifled in away games and to be honest he played crap in many away games as he unable to long pass quickly and the oppisition just put 3 players to mark him. If he was in the centre of the feild, Iniesta and the others would be able to help and they would feed Henry and Bojan/Eto with much more chances up-front. And perhaps we would dominate games more with a packed, African-inspired midfeild :)
Lmao@Titi, it wasnt Arshavins fault, u could be Maradona but if u dont get the ball u will do nothing! Spain had the ball and controlled the pace, simple as that. Only time he actually had the ball Russia created his best chance (last minutes header and brilliant save by Iker). Also, u claim people get into the Andreis bandwagon cuz of 2 good matches, yet u say he aint class cuz of one? hahaha, u make no sense at all!
Using ur logic, Messi is crap aswell, ive seen many matches where he cant do a single thing cuz he gets no ball.
Thing is, in Barca he would cuz 95% of the times cules have more possession than their rivals and trust me, that guy is class when the ball is on his feet.
Also, do u happen to know this 2 teams? Villareal and Bayern? First one was 2nd in Spain, second one is Germanys league champion, so... yeah, those are top teams, and Arshavin perfomed great vs them ;) sooooo, tvm
Nick and Others! Who do you think is better - Fabregas or Iniesta? I personally prefer Fabregas both as an individual and as a player. Both are very creative (and are assets for any club) but I think Fabregas is a bit more intelligent. As a person he has a bit more charisma to his personality than Iniesta. I would love to seek Fabregas back in the blaugrana shirt playing alongside Iniesta.
When I say intelligent I mean on the field and not general mental capacity.
Legend Stone--I agree that Cesc is a bit more spirited, but this may not always be a good thing. Eto'o is spirited in a similar fashion, except that he also threatens to kill journalists from time to time.
Iniesta has always been a model professional. Don't underestimate the importance of this quality.
Regarding Iniesta-Fabregas comarison.I have seen both players play many times.I think Iniesta is a better overall player.Fabregas is a good player but don't believe all that British media hype.According to them,Thierry Henry was hailed as a legend and the best ever to play in the Premier League. But we now know better !! Fabregas started for the first time in the final and looked like crap.He was substituted early in the second half. That is why the old man did not want to start him earlier in the tournament.So.to all Arsenal fans:I have nothing against Fabregas.Afterall,he is a product of Barcalona Youth Academy!!
Legend Stone: do you think Fabregas will be welcomed back with open arms after all the crappy things he said about Barca last week ? I doubt it.Besides,I don't think there is a place for him as a starter.Maybe with Arsenal but not with Barca !!

I'm glad that Spain won and I hope they thrash Germans in the final but I'm a bit shocked right now because I watched Russian channel Ren TV after the game and hoped to see their emotions. Here's what the reporter told me without laughing.
15 minutes after the game - The score is 0:0 and that gives hope for Russian team.
16 minutes after the game - A western club has offered €25m for Arshavin but it is not known who that club is.
20 minutes after the game - They show happy Russian fans watching Russia - Sweden match in a pub.
25 minutes after the game - Arsenal is leading the race for Arshavin's signature as they have offered €30m but Arshavin wants to play for either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
You can trust the Russian media, they wouldn't lie to you.
Arshavin just can't beat Puyol in the defend line means-Puyol is a great defender. maybe he lost focus in the game because too much expectations on him. he just an ordinary player-sometime score goals sometime not.
Spain has 4 great defenders and no doubt Russia especially Arshavin cant beat them.. i think he can play better than today.
Well done to Spain and i like to give a credit to Russians because of they achivement in EURO. Spain will win the final. just beat Lehmann
